kwilf Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 I've bought a dark green and black chatterbait with the original trailer and zoom chunk's. Do these lures work? They look cool but I fish in ponds and haven't caught anything on it. What colors and trailers do you guys like? Quote
Super User Sam Posted April 4, 2012 Super User Posted April 4, 2012 White & chart for starters. White. Dark green with black back is good for stained and dirty water plus cloudy days. Add a trailer hook. Sometimes I add a trailer to give it more bulk but for the most part I do not use the trailer but add a trailer hook. You have many options fishing the Chatterbait. Throw out and reel back. Stop and go retrieve. Let it sink like a jig to the bottom and bounce or drag it back to you. I have had my successes in ponds and rivers. For some reason, I have not done well with a Chatterbait in lakes. Keep trying early in the morning and then off and on during the day. Fun bait and it will produce for you. Quote
endless Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Yes I agree with Sam they are my go to lures when bank fishing small ponds. Get yourself some Live Magic shad for trailers. How are fishing them? I like to mix up my retrieve. I'll cast and work it slow, burn it fast, and jig it like. How sensitive is your rod can you feel the vibration in the rod? 1 Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted April 4, 2012 Super User Posted April 4, 2012 Excellent spring time bass bait. I like to rig a white one with a 4" white fluke. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted April 4, 2012 Super User Posted April 4, 2012 I love em I use grubs as trailers. I just cast and reel back at varies speeds on the way back. I fish mine in the river for smallies and kill em on it the mini ones that is. The larger ones I have less luck with but still catch fish usually pike for some reason but the spots I fish I think pike out number bass 5:1. As for colors I throw chartrus, white, green/black in that order chart and white are my top producers. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted April 4, 2012 Super User Posted April 4, 2012 Excellent video endless. I have had great success with chatterbaits, although this year the chatterbait bite has not happened yet for me. I keep throwing them because they can, and will produce quality fish. Quote
endless Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 I don't know who is the man in the video but I want that jacket!! Quote
craww Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 3/8 model with a strike king bluegill perfect skirt (trim the longer tails some) with a yamamoto hula grub trailer (cut off the skirt on the head). Touch up the tails of the grub with a blue spike it to simulate a bluegills tail. Experiment with different retrieves. Usually encorporateing something where the bait drops, getting those twin tails to flutter work best. I've even had good days hopping it like a jig. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 I don't know who is the man in the video but I want that jacket!! Justin Rackley is a former Texas A&M collegate bass angler. He is currently part of the Lake Fork Pro Staff and guide on Lake Fork in texas. He also is part of the Big Bass Battle show with Tom Redington, Gary Dobyns (sometimes) and the Army Bass anglers. He seems to know his stuff. Having said all that i agree that is one pimpin jacket Thanks for the vid!! 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 4, 2012 Global Moderator Posted April 4, 2012 3/8 oz white with a chartruese split tail trailer kills them for me. Black and blue with a black grub is good in dirty water too. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted April 4, 2012 Super User Posted April 4, 2012 I fish a 1/4oz to 3/8oz bladed jig (chatterbait) a good amount of the time, my favorite colors are chartreuse, chartreuse/white, white, and pearl. For the trails I like a River Rock baits 4" Jointed Jerkbait or a 4" Zoom Superfluke jr, and the 3/8oz I like a 5" split tail or 5" River Rock Baits Jointed jerkbait. I really like these baits as there are so many ways to use them that are effective plus a different trailer can literally change the action to the point it is like a different bait altogether. Quote
fowlskies Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 I've always like the action of the chatterbaits that I have but I have never caught a fish on them. Its not the baits fault though, I have never given the bait its due; for some reason unbenounced to me I never leave it tied on long enough to get a strike even though I love the action. It must be a confidence thing. I am going to have to give it some serious water time this year and build that confidence up. Thanks guys for the good info on it, I have been lurking since the OP posted this topic since I have the same ?s. Quote
WookieeJedi Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 When I first got them, I used the larger version with a speed craw trailer. It worked great, and I caught a lot of fish with it. Then I got a smaller one with a silver head, and instead of putting the skirt on it, I went with a Matrix shad (like a cocahoe minnow). That setup gets a lot of traffic. Right now I'm trying out a big purple/red saltwater split-tail grub on it. You can order your own chatterblades from Jann's to roll your own. Quote
dumfish Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 I only use blk. and blu. combos. For bank fishing, I like 1/8 and 1/4 oz. If I go to lighter colors I usually use spinnerbaits. For boat fishing I use 1/2 oz. For ponds try a 1/8 oz. with a small yum craw, depending on the fishing mood jig it or swim it. Quote
Fishingman93 Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 I used a white and chartrues one with a white trailer last week while down in texas and it tore them up. Quote
TxBankFisherman Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 haven't tried it yet with a small fluke.. seems like it would be great with that.... I have been using a small white split tail grub for the trailer.. and chart./white.... I missed a lot of strikes on this, which is unusual for a spinnerbait, so I'd recommend a trailer hook..it works much better for me with this setup.... It's a funny lure- sometimes this is the only spinnerbait they will bite... and others they will bite standard spinnerbaits and won't touch this.... but it's a must in your fishing arsenal... Quote
J_Pearson Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 These two exclusively so far this season... As far as trailers, I like using a swim-senko type trailer, but I'm going to experiment with a Zoom speed worm as well. JP Quote
SmokeRise1 Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Anybody try the Chatterbait Flashback Shad yet? Quote
Zeeso Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 I have had alot of success with chatterbaits, it used to be a bait I just overlooked when shopping. I tend to just stockpile baits that I have used forever and I know will work, but lately I have began buying baits that may not fit the bill of my "standard" tackle purchases. I fish it usually with a erratic retrieve, pretty much how I fish a spinnerbait and lipless crank, hard jerks every 1-2 feet, instead of just the steady retrieve. But yes, chatter baits are a good investment, works for me and I am sure it will work for you. However, almost every z-man chatterbait I have purchased..... the skirt just comes off when I catch a nice fish, not a deal breaker, more or less just annoying. Quote
bassin is addicting Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 every z-man chatterbait I have purchased..... the skirt just comes off when I catch a nice fish mine too.... Quote
