MichiganFishing1997 Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Is this rod long enough for frogging? Quote
tstone Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 I have one and I don't like it. It doesn't load up well so it doesn't cast well. Plenty of power to pull them out of the slop though. I like a 7'6" better for a frog rod anyway. Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted April 4, 2012 Author Posted April 4, 2012 thanks! what rod would you use then?? Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted April 4, 2012 Super User Posted April 4, 2012 I had the 7' Premier Heavy Power/Fast action rod, which basicly is the same as the Mojo, and I didn't like it either. Poor frog rod for the reasons tstone mentioned. A MH/Fast St Croix makes a much better frog rod, and they have plenty of power to get big fish out of heavy matted grass. I use my 7' MH/Fast Avid or Legend tournament and they perform just fine. I like a 7' rod for frogging, I can cast as far as I need to with that length, plus it's easier to walk a frog with that length then a longer rod...for me. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 4, 2012 Global Moderator Posted April 4, 2012 I have the slop-n-frog rod too and it does not make a good frog rod. I didn't buy it for frogs though and it does throw mid sized swimbaits pretty well along with the A-rig. Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted April 5, 2012 Author Posted April 5, 2012 I just got a shimano clarus and love it, il have to check that out, and you use it for frogging?? Quote
TourPT Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 The new Legend Slop N Frog is plenty long at 7'4 and although I have not fished one yet I have heard they got the tip action right on it this time. I know not much help since i don't have one yet, but worth checking into. Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted April 5, 2012 Author Posted April 5, 2012 Thats just a tad bit out of the price range lol thanks though. Quote
TourPT Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 LOL sorry I missed the Mojo Part. In that price range, or close to it anyways, the Lamiglas Excel Frog rod is pretty good. Quote
berkleyfan81 Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 I have the mojo slop n frog rod is a good light rod and was suprised because it a heavy rod . I have had good suggest using it as a hollow belly frog . I have caught a lot of bass with this rod combo . I have a pflueger summit casting reel ( 7.1:1 ) wide spool with 50lb spiderwire stealth braid . I works good so don't be afraid to try it , I even emailed st. Croix about the rod and they said it good for frog fishing bass in heavy cover . Also it good for the money with a 5 years warranty on it back . I have 2 spinning truimph rods and 3 baitcasting mojo rods and never had a problem with them so I recommand this rod for frog fishing . Quote
tstone Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 I wouldn't say the Mojo slop and frog is light at all, and if it is, it does a good job at hiding it. It feels heavier than my 7'11" Veritas flippin stick. The only thing I have found the rod ok for is 3/4 oz hollow body frogs, and even then it doesn't load up that well for a good cast. I have caught alot of fish on it, and it's great at getting them out of the nasty stuff, but I don't like it because it casts horrible. I'm using a Chronarch 200E7 with 65lb Power Pro on mine. Quote
berkleyfan81 Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 tstone , I had my buddy try my slop n frog rod out and he said the same thing it feels light is doesn't feel like a heavy rod at all , I have handle a heavy rod before and it feels light to me but i guess it by opinion against yours . MichiganFishing1997 just go on buy whatever rod you want just make sure it a heavy action rod if you look at Tackle warehouse on the tab Technique Specific Page go to frog and if wil give you a better idea on the frog rod . With the reel and line and rod I cast fine with it . I have never had a problem with it at all. Quote
msolorio Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 whats your price range? i use an irod freds magic stick for frogs and its pretty awesome man. irod just revamped the genesis series and made them lighter and nicer lookin. great rods for 150. a bps rod is just as good if not better than a lot of rods on the market from what i hear. its frog season here in ca and im gettin a bps carbonlite this weekend. ill let u know how it does for froggin when i get out on the water again. Quote
MichiganFishing1997 Posted April 8, 2012 Author Posted April 8, 2012 yeah my price range is around 110. I am considering getting the carbonlite, a lamiglas excel, or a powell diesel right now. Quote
tstone Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 I have been looking at the powell diesel, debating on getting it to replace my mojo bass. Quote
TheBassfish3r Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 I use a 7'6" Heavy Fast action rod for my Hollow body frogs. With this rod, I would use it for burning soft plastic frogs across the water. That's what I do a lot of the time. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted June 9, 2013 Super User Posted June 9, 2013 shimano compre 7'2 H love it Use that same rod as my main Frog rod and agree it is great! Quote
Super User Teal Posted June 9, 2013 Super User Posted June 9, 2013 yeah my price range is around 110. I am considering getting the carbonlite, a lamiglas excel, or a powell diesel right now. The Powell 725 is a beast of a rod. It loads up well with light hollow body frogs and is a ridiculously strong rod. Reg price 170, the fish ranger has them for 110. IN LOVE WITH THIS ROD. MAKES A GOOD FLIPPIN OR JIG ROD TOO! The mojo rod will prob be fine too. I like rod between 7-7'3 for froggin because its hard for me to roll cast and skip with a roll cast with a longer rod... Quote
buzzfrog Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 haha someone is searchin froggin, lol my answer is a year old, Now I am using a custom frog rod 7'2 HXF, lord it is a the caddy of all frog rods, got the avid grip, I need to take a pic, Quote
