Just wondering if using a snap swivel to quickly change from one crankbait to another is ok to use. Earlier I asked about losing fish once they were hooked and I have my line set up with a swivel now. Wondering if that might have something to do with it as well.

Unfortunately I haven't been back on the water since my last post!

HELLLLLLL NO!

Swivels can cause the bait to spin or twist, it won't always swim properly. Not saying it won't catch fish, but the crank bait will have a more natural presentation if you tie it instead of swivel snapping it.

For me its yes, i use the ball bearing snap swivels which allow the crankbait to move more freely side to side and possibly it gets a little more movement/action too with the snap swivel. Plus i have a hard time changing baits in the dark. Heck i can't tie in the light too.

A snap swivel? No. A quick clip snap? Yes. Any of the dual lock clips will allow you to change baits quickly and may even enhance the action of the bait over the stock split ring. I have yet to have a dual lock snap fail. They are not expensive. Note that Luhr Jensen crankbaits come stock with dual lock snaps. Wonder why ?

I remove the split ring and tie directly with a loop knot. I used to use snaps and such to quickly change baits, but when I removed all that hardware, my catch rate went way up.

I guess this is a matter of preference.

I usually use a quick clip snap unless the water is gin clear and the fish care about what the bait looks like, then I tie direct. I've also tied direct in really cold water to get a tighter wobble.

Snaps are fine, snap swivels are not. The swivel attached to the snap just adds bulk and weight and can kill the action on smaller baits and serves no purpose. If you take the split ring off the front of a bait and use a snap instead it serves the same purpose as the split ring but also allows you to change baits quickly. Just make sure you don't get too big of a snap.

I use them when I switch out a lot, if it's just one or two I won't. I've noticed on some rapalas if the ring isnt on the action gets worse

I seem to switch back and forth on this question. Presently I'm using a snap and seem to be as successful and anyone else.

yeah a regular swivel... no way... but a snap swivel will work great...most fish it will work great on.. but a big bass is very powerful... I'd be scared the swivel might break...

I tried the Norman Speed Clips once and they worked great.

The problem is they are hard to open with fat fingers!

If I knew how to post a link on this thing I would :dazed-7:

Bass Pro #1 40lb. snaps, works well, will not come unglued like the thin wire snaps.

I agree about using snaps, but not swivels for cranks. And I, too, use Bass Pro Size 1 Duo Lock snaps (40 lb).

I use snaps, but no swivels. It really depends on the mood of the fish. I've had days where I couldn't catch em using a snap, but was catching with it directly tied. And vice versa.
