  1. As always it's getting harder to find the fish in MA, and without a boat (can't even use my kayak right now sadly) my options are kind of limited to small ponds. Most of which are loaded with grass even this time of year. What baits do you guys throw when fishing ponds with temps this cold? Obviously most people on YT will tell you to fish a jig or a dropshot this time of year, but around here with so much grass still around it's a pain. Are blade baits a good option? Finesse swimbaits? Ned rigs? I always end up at a loss once late November rolls round.
  2. Anybody from Virginia, North Caroline, or South Carolina fish during that ice storm on the 16th? I tried going out during the storm to try my 68 Huddleston wedge tail swimbait for the first time. I got my one and only strike first cast, but I missed her. I'd appreciate any tips for fishing during cold months/winter fronts.
  3. Bass fishing north west louisiana water temp between 55/60 degrees. What are the top 3 lures to throw. We have been catching tons of small fish but cannot get a big bite.
  4. Hey I was wondering if any of you guys have any experience Fishing Ray Hubbard especially durring winter time. I have a tournament there February and was wondering if you guys have any tips or spots to try there. Also any tournamnet tips in general would be great because I just got my boat a few months ago and I'm very new to lake fishing and tournament fishing in general. I've been doing decent but would like to improve starting with this upcoming tournament on Ray Hubbard. Any comments are very much appreciated!
  5. I want to get better at finding fish in general, but I struggle the most from thawed ice till about the spawn. I don’t have the best electronics in my boat so that is part of it however I’m determined to get more proficient at locating them. People say cold water small mouth fishing and 90% of the time it’s down south were the water that is “cold” is still in the 40’s or higher. I’m in Washington, as of mid October our water temps have not seen the high 30’s. So my question is without nice electronics, what depth range should I look for, and what type of bottom? Note; I can’t identify weed lines on my electronics so that answer won’t really do me much good. Thanks!
  6. I'm looking to buy some rods and reels for ice fishing. Seeing as how I've never ice fished before I don't know how much thought I need to put into buying the "correct" rods and reels. Ideally I'd like about 3-4 rods each for different species or different applications. I really like Fenwick's regular rods so I think I'm going to buy rods from them. I've got a couple picked out for bass to trout to panfish. My question lies in reel selection. Do I have to consider gear ratios (retrieve speed) as much as I do in regular fishing reels. Like normally, if I'm flippin' and pitchin' in the summer I like a fast gear ratio for a quick retrieve, which provides the ability for rapid presentations. Seeing as ice fishing is essentially only vertical jigging, does gear ratio matter in the same regard? Is it based more on species? For example, if I'm fishing for trout would I need something that can reel faster in case they swim directly towards me, Vs. fishing for panfish where I might not need to bring in line as quickly? Does gear ratio even matter? What brands are good and reliable? Geek out, the more detailed and opinionated reply you can give, the better!
  7. I live in Germantown, TN but I am looking for good locations to fish in and around the Memphis, TN and Shelby County area during the winter. Do any of y'all have good suggestions? If you guys have good suggestions, what lures, flies, or baits did y'all use when fishing those locations?
  8. Do any of y'all know of some good locations in the Shelby County area to fish for winter smallmouth bass?
  9. What are the best Alabama rig swimbaits for cold clear water bass?
  10. So I’ve gone out once a day (for at least 3 hours) the last 4 days. All the ponds around me are still partially/totally frozen. For the ones that aren’t totally frozen I’ve been throwing jigs to the deepest spots of the pond, or at least the deepest spots I can cast to and I’ve had no luck at all. Not even a bite. It’s honestly really discouraging and I’m about to hang up my hat and wait until it gets warmer out. It sucks getting all bundled up and standing in the cold snow and wind to just get frustrated. What do you guys think, should I just wait until the water warms??
  11. Hey everyone, this is my first post on this forum. I've been an avid bass angler since I was little, and just recently started going full steam again (in terms of research, time spent fishing, buying tackle, etc.)...when the weather was warmer I was going at least a couple of times a week, but the cold weather has obviously slowed some things down. That being said, I don't want to pack up for the winter either, but I do want to make the most of my time when I'm out as I'm pretty sure we all do. I've bought a bunch of lipless crankbaits lately in varying colors (shad, bream, craw, and firetiger for different conditions). I hear they are good for cold weather bass, and caught a bass the other day using one. I've also heard some good things about bladebaits for winter bass, but don't really want to invest if there isn't much of a difference between them for these conditions. I will probably buy at least one for now regardless, but just wondering people's opinions. Is one clearly better than the other, are there positive and negatives to both, or is there really no difference?
  12. What are the best winter fishing lures for winter in lakes that are clear and lakes that are kind of clear and kind of murky.
  13. Anyone have any tips for a new fisherman on how to catch bass in the wintertime up here in Massachusetts? I do not have that much access to a boat, and mostly do shore fishing, but any tips will help. thanks
  14. I live in the South Carolina midlands and need help for fishing ponds during the colder months. I've been trying fineese jigs and shaky heads but it hasn't been working.
  15. Hey, guys! I'm looking to try my hand at making some hair jigs myself and need so advice. What kind of hair is a good starting point for cold water river smallies? Any advice is welcome, but good suppliers to look into are most welcome! I've done a good amount of reading on "how-to's" and such but I don't really want to go get generic brick and mortar hair. I like supporting good, quality companies more. Thanks in advance!
  16. I went yesterday from 12:40-3:30 with my buddy. I enjoy holding down the back of his Tracker. Weather had been warm in SC for the last week or so but it had gotten to freezing at night and around 52 for a high the last two days. The water temp was about 51-53. We tried Trick Worm, I tried T rigged craw and a black spinnerbait. But we caught all 5 on a gold Rat L Trap. The biggest being this 4.5 lb that crushed my very slowly retrieved Trap in deep-ish water. She swallowed the bait and nicked one of her gills. It was clear most of the fish were on the deep side of the boat. And the bass were not biting on the sunny side of the lake.
  17. Looking for a little help on my home water. I fish New Orleans City Park, which has a pond and lagoon with 11 miles of shoreline. Stained water with about 1-2ft of visibility and tons of vegetation. I've been having trouble putting a pattern together lately since temps here in southeast Louisiana are finally becoming "winterish". After talking to some buddies with the Wildlife and Fisheries and a lot of research, I've learned the average depth in the park is 2.5ft, with the deepest spot being just under 7ft. With water that shallow, what should I be keying on when fishing those cold post-frontal days?
  18. Need help Fishing the calcasieu river anyone know any spots or good lures to use around February? Thanks!
  19. Going to florida i a couple of weeks to the sarasota area. Any tips on pond fishing around the area?
  20. I am a writer for the fisherman magizine, and my newest article is on winter fishing. If you have any pictures you want in article please send and leave your first and last name, I will only pick a couple. The pictures must be from winter, and you have to live in New Jersey.
  21. What are the best tips and tricks to catching big fish from the bank in cooler water temps? Specifically tackle, gear, and times.
  22. i am new to jerkbait fishing and am more or less lost when it comes to fishing them. Any advice on brands, rods, gear ratio, technique, and what time of year to use them?
  23. Hey everyone, I have been really getting into nighttime bass fishing in southwest Florida. Ive been doing well on smaller lures especially twin tailed grubs. But now that the weather has dipped to the 50s at night and mid 70s in the day. If anyone here has been fishing for bass after 9pm, what has been the key to your success? Lure colors? Types of lures etc. However, I have used the midnight bass spinner bait with no luck. Im starting to feel that bass are not that active at night from what most people think they do. Ill wake up and look at the water, then again around 3 or 4 pm and bass will be swimming on the shore on the bank on an 85 degree morning. Id be interested to see what has worked for you all at night in Florida.
  24. im a bank fisherman as i dont own a boat and i know that limits my ability to get to where the fish are, but even in ponds, rivers, and channels that run by the bank, i cant seem to catch fish lately. i want to blame it on the warmer than normal weather affecting their normal patterns, but i need to learn how to catch fish when it gets hard none the less. ive used jigs, rattletraps, spinners, cranks, soft plastics, nothing is working. im also not seeing many fish by the bank, which leads me to believe that theyre in deeper water, but with as warm of a winter as weve had i feel like they would be shallow. most of the water i fish isnt more than 7 feet deep or so. im fishing in north texas around fort worth and granbury. any suggestions?
  25.
