  1. My buddy and his wife drug their small boat down to Erie to school me and the wife in the ways of the Lake Erie walleye. Good time was had by all...... except the 'eyes. Once he got dialed in to the program, it didn't take too long to get our 24.
  2. Does anyone have any recommendations for a short (6' to 6'6") baitcasting rod for catching not only bass, but also northern pike, walleye, and lake trout? I don't think there is going to be a huge variance in the strengths needed to catch any of these fish, but I'm wondering what a solid middle ground would be. Bonus points if the handle is under 14". Looking to spend $100, no more than $150, as it will be my first casting rod (grew up with spinning) and don't want to break the bank right away. Thanks!
  3. Registration is now open for military and civilian anglers to participate in a unique professional-grade, amateur bass and walleye tournament in the magnificent Thousand Islands. The 4th annual Fishing for Freedom Thousand Islands Bass & Walleye Tournament, hosted by Carthage Area Hospital and presented by Waite Toyota is set for Saturday, Aug. 5, at Bonnie Castle Resort & Marina, 31 Holland St., Alexandria Bay. The two-day event pays homage to Fort Drum, our military and their families by celebrating freedom and outdoor recreation in Northern New York. With spectacular views of the Thousand Islands, the St. Lawrence River is home to plentiful smallmouth and largemouth bass and walleye. Anglers can compete for the largest bass and walleye of the day for a $400 purse and for the top four bass and walleye during three event weigh-ins at 9 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m. Weigh-in prizes are $200, $150, $100, $75, for first through fourth place, respectively, and are up for grabs at each of the day’s three weigh-ins. This year’s celebration kicks off Friday, Aug. 4, at 6 p.m., with fun for the entire family during a downtown block party and public auction in Alexandria Bay. The block party features food, entertainment and a live auction with proceeds shared between the USO Fort Drum and Carthage Area Hospital’s Foundation. All are welcome to attend, not just registered anglers. This professional-grade, amateur tournament is run by the New York B.A.S.S. Chapter Federation. The tournament is open to all amateur anglers. Registration is $60 for active and retired military and $65 for all other anglers. Visit fishingforfreedomti.com to download a complete copy of 2017 tournament rules and registration forms. The 2017 Fishing for Freedom Thousand Islands Bass & Walleye Tournament is sponsored by Waite Toyota, AmeriCU Credit Union, Martin’s Point Health Care, Bonnie Castle Resort & Marina, AUSA Northern New York-Fort Drum, Hutchinson’s Boat Works, Uncle Sam Boat Tours, Dark Island Spirits Distillery, the Carthage Area Hospital Medical Staff, Carthage Area Hospital, New York B.A.S.S. Chapter Federation and Army Bass Anglers, Staie on the Seaway Real Estate Services and Nav’s Popcorn Thousand Islands. WWNY TV 7 and WNYF Fox 28, Froggy 97, and Newzjunky.com are proud media sponsors of this year’s tournament. The 2016 Tournament hosted roughly 94 anglers in Alexandria Bay on the majestic St. Lawrence River.
  4. In the near future, I will be making a trip up North to fish for Smallmouth, Walleye, Muskie, and other smaller species. I already have my rod choice for most of these fish picked out, my topwater rod can double for muskie/pike and my UL covers the perch and big bluegill. I can use my bass rods to cover smallmouth. However, I have been looking to replace my spinning rod that I use for finesse techniques with a new, better rod. It would be awesome if I could double this to cover walleye techniques such as Jig'n raps. Would a Medium rod like the St Croix Eyecon be the correct selection? Other suggestions? Should I avoid the Walleye specific rods and get a Dobyns Fury? This rod would mainly be used for Senko, Ned Rig, Drop Shot and other finesse techniques year round.
  5. Anyone use rubber nets or have experience with one? Im looking into getting one mainly for walleye and pike. To me they seem like i would have less problems with tangles and hooks getting stuck in the mesh.
  6. I will be going up to lake noquebay in WI a very small lake and I can not find any updated fishing reports on the lake . has anyone been up that way to tell me what species is present?

  8. Next month we are planning to go casting for pike and wondering if someone can help determine if my current setup is ok? I have a spinning 6' ML with no line on it, and a spinning 6'6" M with 8 lb Stren Magnathin. As long as I have a wire leader will I be ok with the 6'6"? Should I just spool my 6' ML with the extra Stren I have? I want to be able to use it for the pike, jigging soft plastics for crappie and walleye, and slip bobbers.
  9. Going to lake vermilion for minnesota opener and mainly going to be trolling with no minnows but I want to try a swimbait. I'm grabbing some of those gt 360 but what size and color should I get? Doesn't have to be 360 brand but I'd like to get the correct size and color!
  10. Anyone going to the maumee river walleye run in spring!? I've never been but my buddy is dying to take me, so I bought some waders and yet another setup for jiggin walleyes. Let know me know if anyone's going as I have no clue where to go or park all I know is it is always packed!
  11. I live in Minneapolis MN and would really love to get one more open water fishing trip in. Does anybody know of any places where I can catch any species of fish this time of year. thanks, charlie
  12. Wondering if anyone fishes the St Joe river in Constantine or Three Rivers. Im tired of fishing the same stretches of river in Indiana, so I figured I would give it a try further up north. In specific I'm wondering whether there is a population of smallmouth even worth giving it a shot, or if they are dominated by Largemouth.
  13. I'm going above Constantine stretch of river (below three rivers) and am curious of any tips. I assume it has smallmouth and largemouth like the other stretches of river. From the aerial views, it seems like this time of year I need to bring some frogging and flipping gear. Also does this stretch get stocked annually or at all with walleye?
  14. I am going up to a cabin on Balsam lake in Wisconsin and I was wondering if anybody had any tips for fishing it. I was hoping to catch some walleye, bass and maybe a northern. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
  15. Finally, I went back to the flooded Susquehanna River near a bridge in a small pull off from the rolling currents. After getting a bite and seeing the fish come off as I was lifting him outta' the water, I got a bite. Cranked it in; tossed it back to see that he swam into the grass a foot off the rock I was on. I looked back down two minutes later to see it still in the weeds struggling. I took a small stick and realized that someone else's line was caught somewhere on it's head so I snapped the line and let the fish run free. Needless to say, I think my good deed allowed me to hook this one. Speaking of which, it came on a yellow twister tail - the ONLY THING i've caught anything on this year.
  16. I caught my biggest walleye yet a few days ago, and I managed to get it on video so I thought I'd share it with you guys. I know there's a lot bigger walleyes out there, but I really don't fish for them all that much so it was sweet to hook into a bigger one!
  17. Any luck on spoons?

  20. I'm sure a lot of you guys can help me out with this one. Heading out to a reservoir tonight to fish for walleye. We will probably catch some bass as a by product but I won't be complaining! It will be the first time I've fished for them and I was wondering what type of lures work best? From the reading I've done online I think I have a pretty good idea of where to find them on the lake I just haven't found much information about lures. Heading out in about an hour. Thanks!
  21. Hello everyone, I am a new fellow to this forum so let me know if I did any rules wrong regarding this forum . I am in the market for an incredibly versatile rod and reel combo. This would be the set up I would keep, if for some reason rods and reels suddenly stopped being produced and such you couldn't buy any rods and reels. First attribute I would want is a VERY durable SPINNING rod that would last a LONGGGGG time (warranty not in play). second attribute I would want is an incredibly versatile rod, since I would still want to catch all kinds of fish! And to finish off the rod attributes I would want all the other things to come into play (sensitivity, feel, weight, etc), but it doesn't matter as much as the first two attributes. For the SPINNING reel I would want hassle free dependability and versatility. What are your thoughts? Price range is under $250. Remember this is a spinning rod and reel! I was thinking of a medium 6'6"-7' fast/x fast shimano clarus, compre, or crucial paired with a wavespin reel. I definitely want to give the wavespin a try, so I doubt you guys can talk me out of the wavespin reel (I was specifically thinking of the DH 3000z or maybe something a little smaller, since I mainly fish out of a small lake in the mountains that mostly has fish <20 lbs.). I am completely open on rods though! Because this situation isn't happening I picked shimano for dependability and their GREAT warranty and customer service? If this situation was really happening what would you pick? Regards, Mike
