  1. I made a post last year for rod recommendations, and ended up getting a 6’6” ML/F St. Croix Premier. After fishing it for a year, I’ve got to say it’s a hair too long for most of the places I fish (narrow, small creeks where the average fish is 10-to-15 inches). The biggest cons is the rod is slightly clumsy to be waist deep in water surrounded in tree limbs and handling a fish, handle length is a bit too long, and up to this point I’ve never wished I could cast any further so I’m set on a shorter rod fitting the bill better. The action and power are great, though. So I’m pretty set on ML. I’m on the hunt for the perfect setup for this type of fishing, particularly been looking into the Avid line with their 6’ ML/F and 6’3 ML/XF spinning rods. I don’t have the ability to handle either in person but if anyone has, just how different is a St. Croix XF compared to the F? Is there a noticeable difference between a 6’ and 6’3 rod? I’ve not fished a 6’3 at all, and it’s been a while since I’ve used a 6’. The handle length is the same on both which seems like it’d be perfect. I would say 80% of my uses for it are going to be these small creeks so I don’t think I’ll miss my 6’6” too much. Line is going to be 10lb braid but debating on going back to 6-8lb mono. I’m liking the braid/mono leader so far though. 70% of the time I’ll be using 11/15oz Ned Rigs, 4” senkos, 1/16-1/8oz T rigs. The other 30% Rebel Wee-Craws, Rapalas, whopper plopper 60s.
  2. (1) Greetings BR members! I've been looking to get after some smallies this summer on the Upper Potomac. I've had success at Riverbend Park and Goose Creek in years past, but I'm looking for spots that I can reach easier by bike from Arlington. The Ohio C&O Canal Towpath would be my route of choice to get upriver, so spots on the Maryland side are preferred (not asking for your honey holes, just general locations ideal for shore/wade fishing). I'm sort of a newbie to bass casting for SM in a river, so I may need some technical guidance and info on specific areas / structure to target. Beyond weedless tubes, it would also be helpful to get some insight as to what bait/profile/size is best for this river. (2) If anyone would like to fish with me, I've been looking for a fishing buddy! Unfortunately, I don't have a boat or consistent access to a car, but I can ride my bike a good long way to reach the fishing grounds. I can also comp for gas or other expenses. PM if interested. All advice and responses are welcome. Tight Lines!
  3. Been a terrific week on The Delaware, wading every day, fishing flats in Bucks County. Thought I'd include a few of my better fish from this week thus far. Smallies have been very active under mid day bluebird skies. Best numbers have been on soft paddletail swimbaits on a light weighted hook. During overcast periods or when the wind has made finesse less effective, walking baits have gotten big blow ups worked nearly as fast as I can retrieve on a 7:1 baitcaster. Short strikes or slaps mean I go into hyper-speed and burn, burn, burn - they come back for it ticked off. First cast of the day on Tuesday, I just about jumped outta my shoes when this channel cat whacked my swimbait. Fun fight on 6lb fluoro. Caught several more channels on swimbaits while casting for smallies. Striper have been blistering walking baits on breaklines beside flats all week. I like the Strike King Sexy Dawg, again - fast as I can burn it. Lots on large paddletails and four on a Lucky Craft Pointer 100sp, always on the pause. All fish released as always. Hope you guys are hammering them wherever you’re at!
  4. I'm glad i found this site and am looking forward to learning about the local creeks and rivers. I'm a bass-man who grew up fishing the rocky rivers and creeks of southern Missouri. I'm fully addicted to smallmouth bass and i've heard the shoal bass is similar. I moved here for work, so i don't have any fishing connections yet. Hopefully enrolling on here will fix that. I'd like to find someone who's needing a fishing buddy to go wading for bass. I'm eager to find some good rivers/access points that are good for wading. I like to cover a lot of water so spots without long, deep (impassable) pools would be ideal. If anyone has any suggestions, i'd greatly appreciate it. Also, i'm up in the Roswell/Alpharetta area but am more than willing to drive as far as i need to. Thanks in advance for any tips and/or invitations!
