  1. Has anyone had success using spinners or spinner baits with camo brown stainless steel wire? I know they suggest camo brown SS wire for saltwater use but I’m not sure why. Looking to make some trout spinners for this winter and next spring and was curious if camo Brown SS wire might be better in Clearwater than bright SS wire for trout. Thoughts?
  2. My girlfriend informed me that we will be going to Iceland in August, so obviously my first thought was how I’ll be wetting a line while I’m there. Has anyone been to Iceland to fish, or happened to fish while they were there? There are only 3 freshwater sport fish on the island: brown trout, Arctic char, and Atlantic salmon. And getting licensed doesn’t seem as straightforward as I would have hoped. I believe you need a different license for each different river, and fly-fishing is primarily the only kind of fishing that’s permitted. So I’ll be brushing up on my fly casting this spring. If anyone has fished in Iceland at all, I’d love to hear any and all of your experience.
  3. 4 lb Trilene XL (mono) or 4 lb Yo Zuri Hybrid? I have a 5’6” light rod with a small spinning reel. I will fish for stocked trout in lakes and may fish in small creeks for bass with this setup as well. I am leaning Yo Zuri Hybrid, but I have heard the memory is bad for spinning reels or is it not that bad? thanks!
  4. Hello guys, this couple weeks I had a fried from Japan visited me and I got new disease from him, Called BFS fishing specially for trout and panfish(ive seen 16lb carp was caught on same set up). so first going to show you this YouTube video, thats the set up I got and waiting to arrive here. once here, I am going to hit the road, trout fishing in streams in morning and bass fishing in night. I am very exited about this and going to update you guys. Please let me know any suggestion you have.
  5. What is best steelhead and brown trout jig under a float also what is best trout worms is wacky rigging them the best like with senkos i fish irondequoit creek
  6. does anyone know the effects of stocking different sized bluegill in a pond that was only stocked with trout a few years ago. The trout fishing there can be really good at times but it would be cool to have two species in a pond walking distance from where I live. I dont know if the trout reproduce but I have found eggs in the one trout I took from there and have seen one trout smaller then all the rest (the average trout in there is 12 to 14 inches) would bluegill mess up the trout reproducing if they do? or eat up what the trout would eat? the pond is very deep and clear and does not have a lot of weeds. Thanks
  7. In June i was up in West Virginia and caught my first trout. Everyone one else was fly fishing and i just had my bass rod . I decided to use good ol' bucktail jig since it looked the most like a fly lure. I had a few bites including a HUGE rainbow that i got to the shallows but then he did a barrel roll and tossed my lure along with every other trout i hooked. As a matter of fact these guys were worse than bass! Luckily i eventually caught a 16in 1 1/2lb rainbow as my first trout and invited him home for dinner. My question is what lures have you guys caught trout on? (Not including flies)
  8. Going to a local lake this saturday to fish for stocked trout. Any tips you guys might be able to give me. Baits, rigs and or set up. Only own two baitcasters.
  9. Hey, NC guys. I'm renting a cabin on the Broad R a little below Lake Lure for the weekend of March 18. Can I reasonably expect anything to be biting then? Trout or small mouth or anything else? Are there special size, quantity limits or seasonal bans that apply? Thanks in advance.
  10. This is a three video series (best I can tell) likely filmed in the 90s. It's not a video that shows tons of action or trout screaming line off of a spool. However, this series is probably the most well put together series I've ever seen on how fish relate to current, why they choose their lies, and how they maintain position in fast water. The series also shows a ton on how trout are able to see so well (crazy ability to track differently with each eye and how light refraction at the surface works), their cone of vision, etc. It's a super interesting series where the filmmaker takes TONS of underwater footage and breaks it down using slow motion. Again, this isn't a Iaconelli video with tons of yelling and celebration, but in terms of useful information that relates to fishing in current, these are sensational. Even if you don't care about trout or fly fishing, this series has TONS of useful information about any river or stream ecosystem. Part 1 if you Part 2 Part 3
  11. I’m looking for a starter rod for shore fishing Lake Superior tributes. I will mostly be fishing steelhead and rainbow trout and occasionally salmon. I have been looking at the 8’6” medium steelhead salmon Fenwick eagle rod and also the normal 7’ medium eagle. I don’t know which to choose, I will mostly be fishing with spinners and spoons. My real question is, will the larger rod have the sensitivity for the smaller rainbows and pinks? But I don’t know if the small rod will be able to handle steelhead and salmon. I don’t really have the budget to buy both so which one should I pick? Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for replying!
  12. I'm looking to buy some rods and reels for ice fishing. Seeing as how I've never ice fished before I don't know how much thought I need to put into buying the "correct" rods and reels. Ideally I'd like about 3-4 rods each for different species or different applications. I really like Fenwick's regular rods so I think I'm going to buy rods from them. I've got a couple picked out for bass to trout to panfish. My question lies in reel selection. Do I have to consider gear ratios (retrieve speed) as much as I do in regular fishing reels. Like normally, if I'm flippin' and pitchin' in the summer I like a fast gear ratio for a quick retrieve, which provides the ability for rapid presentations. Seeing as ice fishing is essentially only vertical jigging, does gear ratio matter in the same regard? Is it based more on species? For example, if I'm fishing for trout would I need something that can reel faster in case they swim directly towards me, Vs. fishing for panfish where I might not need to bring in line as quickly? Does gear ratio even matter? What brands are good and reliable? Geek out, the more detailed and opinionated reply you can give, the better!
  13. Is there a rod size/ action/ power that would work well for both trout and crappie? I mostly fish for bass and would like to add just one rod that could be used for crappie and trout- is that possible? Price would be under $100 for rod and reel. I would be fishing mostly in ponds but would want to try streams for trout. Thanks guys!
  14. So I am going to be getting a new ultralight combo for catching panfish and trout and I'm curious about others opinions on my choices for rod/reel I want to stay in the range of 150ish bucks for rod and reel combined Rod: Daiwa presso 6ft ultralight Reels: Pfluger president Pfluger president xt Daiwa RG I have seen good reviews for the rod and all the reels but I am not sure what reel to get. does anyone have experience with these reels and if so give me you thoughts please :) and also what size should I get them in?
  15. Hey guys! I hope spring is treating you better than it is us here in St. Louis, the weather has been crazy it snowed on Easter and tornado season is here. In two weeks ill be headed down to Lake Taneycomo near Branson MO and thought it would be fun to see if anyone had any favorite trout baits/lures they use anywhere or favorite spots on Taneycomo. I have a few already like Roark and Turkey Creek, Money Island and the I-65 bridges If anyone hasn't been and gets a chance its a great place to fish, right above it is Table Rock Lake and right below it is Bull Shoals/White River.
  16. I'll be in Indianapolis this Fri/Sat at the Convention Center, coming from San Clemente, California. I'll have 3-4 hours to go fish somewhere, including travel time. Where can I go that is nearby (within 20-45 minutes drive in an Uber or BlueIndy)? I'll have an Okuma travel rod & plastics. Any kind of fishing. If it's something I won't find elsewhere, even better. But really anywhere I can get a fish to bite, except pet stores :). If there's a tackle shop I should stop at for the appropriate local jig or bait, that would be great too. Also any advice for fishing in the cold. I'll have a heavy jacket and gloves. Thanks!
  17. Hi guys! I'm taking my 2 boys to Lindsey's resort on the river in Heber Springs. Anyone have any advise for early spring trout?
  18. Hello, I am new to fishing in Eastern Washington and wanted to know where to get information about fishing reports and just general information about what type of lures work and such. I am using spinner, and live in the Spokane area. Appreciate any input
  19. Title says it all. I am a 28 year old, married man. I fished a lot growing up in my early teen years. I want to return to fishing, and specifically get into FLY fishing. I live in the KC area. Looking for someone that can show me the ropes of fly fishing, learn, and have some fun on the local ponds, lakes, and streams. I have no current gear, looking to make those purchases soon. Just hard to know what I need and when. I know we are heading into the winter months, would love to pick it up for a hobby and new past time. Anyone interested in teaching and fishing with a young novice with little experience?
  20. Does anyone know if the Berkeley big game rod is any good? I would be getting it in 8 foot MH for salmon and steelies.
  21. An outdoors store in my neighborhood is going out of business and having some great deals, so I though this would be a good time to jump into fly tying. I don't think they have a great tying section, so I want to know what i need. I'd like to tie flies for trout and bluegill. Are there any essential materials that I should buy? I figured that if i got some thread, dubbing, elk hair, hackle, foam, and beadheads i could tie a lot of different basic flies. Is there anything else that I should have to start tying for these species (I know I need a vice and bobbin and other tools).
  22. Hello fellow anglers, Where I go fishing I can see the landlocked salmon and trout feeding off the surface on some flies and bugs. I do not have a fly rod and I only bring my one spinning rod with me. I've tried casting spoons and crank baits in the direction of where I see the fish at the surface, but they wont hit anything! How could I go about catching these surface feeders with a spinning setup? Thank you
