  1. I use my brother's F150 and he has a Curt adjustable, dual ball hitch on it with a 2" and 2-5/16" inch balls on it to pull his shack and my boat. His iceshack uses the 2-5/16" inch ball with no shock when pulling. It is approx. 1,000lbs. lighter. When I use his truck to pull my Alumacraft Competitor 205 with the 2" ball there is a thunk when starting and stopping. The trailer has a Leverlock hitch on it. Maybe the Leverlock coupler is known for not being as tight and the problem cannot be resolved, I don't know. If that is not the case, what is the best shock absorbing hitch that is good for summer and winter with salt on the roads?
  2. I have a 2014 Stratus 186 VLO which is supposed to weigh 2,720lbs. I am looking at getting a van which can tow apprx. 3,500lbs. Normally when I am fishing it's just me, my empty truck, and a friend, so add apprx. 300-400lbs. and gear for people which would take that 3,500lbs. down to 3,000-3,100lbs. and I should be safe by apprx. 380-480lbs. Now that's just for a quick 20 minute trip to the lake that is flat and dry. If I was loading up the family and going on a trip I would easily exceed that weight. I would love to keep a truck but a minivan seems to be the way we are headed with a family, my wife drives a car. In an earlier post someone said to get my vehicle weighed at a feed lot or truck scale. I don't think I have too many of either around me. I am near the Forest Lake, Minnesota area. Where could I go to get my boat and trailer weighed and how much would it cost?
  3. I was late to the game when it comes to bladed jig/chatterbait fishing, but I’ve had a lot more time for fishing this year because of COVID and social distancing and whatnot, so I’ve done what I’ve always done when I wanted to learn or get better with a specific lure... I put it in my hand and tried not to put it down. I’ve grown to really like using bladed jigs, and I normally always have one on the deck. My question arises as we get deeper into fall and then into winter (we’re still dealing with temps in the 70s most of the time in South Louisiana, but we’ve had a few cold fronts and more to come in the near future lol). My go-to trailer is a Zoom Super Fluke, but I also like paddle tails like Rage Swimmers or Keitech’s. With water temps dropping, I’m wondering what others like to use for a smaller profile trailer. Obviously I plan to try the Zoom Tiny Fluke and smaller versions of the paddle tails, but I was hoping to get some other recommendations of trailers to try out. So what do you guys think??
  4. Just wondering what everyone’s opinion is when it comes to jig trailers. When I first got into bass fishing, I always matched my trailer to my jig. After reading multiple articles and reading through forums, I’ve definitely changed it up. I personally like a contrasting color most of the time nowadays, especially when fishing a bladed jig. Just looking for some opinions on this topic.... What’s your preference? Do you change it up? ETC, ETC, ETC...
  5. So, I've had a few threads on here about getting a tow vehicle for my Stratus 186VLO. I'd love to get a pickup truck but it's just not in the cards right now. I looked at minivans but the max towing capacity is 3,000-3,500lbs. I have looked at the Subaru Ascent SUV which has a max towing capacity of 5,000lbs. I was able to get my fully loaded boat and trailer weighed today. It weighed 2,960lbs. I was told that when vehicle says max towing capacity they are also including the weight of passengers and gear in the vehicle also and not just the boat and trailer. So, if my fully loaded boat and trailer weigh 2,960lbs. and I add 2 adults, say, 400lbs. that makes it 3,360lbs. for my boat, trailer, people, and gear. If the Subaru Ascent's max towing capacity is 5,000lbs. that leaves a cushion of 1,640lbs. Would this be enough of a cushion? I know that your not supposed to tow anywhere near what the max said and that how much you tow affects your vehicle's ability to drive safely. So, what is the cushion from your max weight and the vehicle's max tow weight, 1,000lbs., 2,000lbs, 4,000lbs.......what is should it be?
  6. Hey everyone, so my go-to is the Yum Dinger/Yum Finesse Worm (Wacky, Neko, Carolina in Green Pumpkin, Watermelon Red Flake, June Bug). This spring I want to start expanding more and using Arkie Jigs. Does anyone have any recommendation on their favorite brand and color, trailer (craws/grubs/paddletails) combinations for the different seasons? Which works best for you? Also, how do you normally retrieve such jigs with the specific combinations? Again, I am just looking to expand and perfect my arsenal one at a time. Any help would be amazing I also use Crankbaits (Berkely Pitbull 5.5 Squarebill), Buzz Baits (Booyah 3/8 top water) and Swimbaits (Powerbait 4" Rib Shads ) but for some reason or another unsuccessful using them. I will save that for another thread lol.
  7. Time to address my trailer. It is a COX with roller bunks.I'm thinking of just going to bunk boards.I'm hoping to make my own.Anyone who has done this I would like your input. The boat is a 14ft alu SmokerCraft with 40hp motor so it's not heavy at all. Thanks
  8. Hi everyone. I recently purchased a jig, it's brown and orange ish with green sparkles . As a trailer I got a sungill zoom baby brush hog. It matches PERFECT, but they're "limited editions" and they probably won't be available in a while. So I was just wondering if I could put a greenish trailer on an orange trailer. I live in a pretty clear lake so it troubles me a little that the bass might be able to see the difference and be skeptical about hitting them. Hopefully you guys can help me ! Thanks,, Tight Lines! ps. Let me know if you want pictures.
  9. I am looking for good jig weight and it's all confusing me. My fishing rod takes 1/4 oz - 5/8 oz. All I need is opinions on a fitting jig. I would also like to put a trailer on it, I don't really know if a standard trailer is to heavy, but if it will effect the jig weight, please keep this in mind when suggesting a size, thanks. Tight lines!
  10. Ok everyone so I need some opinions. I just replaced my trailer wiring and everything was working great for a couple weeks until now. I tested the plug coming out of my truck with a circuit tester and it all works. When I have the "not installed" wiring in the back of my truck grounded to my truck and plugged into the connection im able to get a complete circuit at the end of the wires (without the lights connected). When I connect the lights I get nothing from them. I have tested them with a battery and they do light up. Soooo....my questions..... Will the plug from my truck give a false positive if I have the alligator clip from the circuit tester attached to the truck? I didnt think so but im trying everything.... Would the trailer lights have to be mounted in order to have a ground even though the trailer wiring harness has a connecting ground coming from the plug to the trailer? Im sorry if this sounds simple. Im not well versed in electrical circuits. When I initially replaced them it was easy and worked right off the bat but this troubleshooting is driving me crazy. Thanks in advance!
  11. I have been fishing 3/8 ounce jigs with chunk trailers lately. I'm in Indiana so it has been pretty cold. I have been working them across the bottom very slowly and I have only been able to land 2 fish so far. I have been getting a lot of bites but I end up missing on the hookset. I'm fishing braid with a flouro leader so I can feel the bottom and the bites very well. Are the bass nibbling at the trailer or am I getting too excited on the hookset? Often times the trailer is about to come off once I reel it in after the bass keep nibbling at it. What am I doing wrong? Or is this typical fall behavior?
  12. So I'm starting to get into Jigs after using chatter baits and was wondering what kind of trailers do you guys like to throw? Craws? straight tail worms? Paddle tail worms? I know the possibilities are endless but was just wondering what works best for you guys? what do you guys like? Does water clarity play a factor in your trailer choice? Does water clarity play a factor in when you would throw a jig?? I'm kind of new to jigs so any and all information is going to be helpful
  13. I just changed the marine grease on my Spartan Trailer's 'Superlube' hubs. It's quite a bit of work. You basically pump new grease into the hubs while rotating the tire until new grease starts showing signalling that you've expelled all of the old grease and now the hubs are full of new grease. I have small hands so I can't grasp the grease gun normally and have to hold each part and close it which is far more work than regularly doing it. Also, since the hubs take a ton of grease it takes about 50 minutes to do while you are attempting to clean up the old grease and pump the new stuff in and your hands get tired. It's also really messy. Luckily last year I found a battery operated Plews Lubrimatic Grease Gun on sale at Menards for $49 bucks and it was well worth it. It takes a 14 oz. tube of grease not the small 3 oz. tubes that my hubs must have taken 2 of per hub for a total 4 if I recall correctly. Not having to refill the gun with a new tube 4 times per lubing is nice. Did the hubs this year with help from my brother using the battery operated gun and it was way easier, still about a 30 minute job though. Not something I look forward to each year if I don't have too. I have heard some people say they only top off with a little new grease so that they expel any water but don't put all new grease in the hubs. I'm not sure if this is a good idea, but if it works, I'd rather do that than put all new grease in the hubs. Also, I change my my outboards spark plugs every year but I know that some others don't. 1.) What maintenance do you guys do every year? 2.) What do maintenance do you guys do every few years?
  14. Hey guys / gals, I am looking for a trailer to haul around the 12 ft tracker I just purchased. I was thinking I should ask around the forums prior to going out and purchasing one! Let me know if you have one you would be willing to let go / sell! Thanks, Castamasta
  15. New to this site so hopefully so hopefully I am posting in the correct spot. I had an issue towing my boat and trailer this weekend. Quick background. Boat and trailer is a 2000 Bass Tracker Pro Team 175W. I bought this last year and have had it out a ton with no issues. Friday 3-18-16 we went to Mozingo Lake about 40 miles from home and had no issues on the way up. On the return trip home I stopped to drop my friend off (probably 30 miles into the return trip with no issues still). When I got back on the highway after a mile maybe I noticed something was wrong. My truck felt like it had the brakes on and when I let off the throttle there was a horrible shake/vibration in the truck and the truck slowed more than normal. This continued for several miles and eventually smoothed out some. I have not towed the boat since but I have checked a few things. Bearings look and feel great. No slop in the wheels and sounds smooth when spun. They have not been replaced since I have owned the boat but I have greased them. Tires do have a noticable flat spot (maybe 3-4 inches long) on the inside portion of the tire. The inside looks to be worn more than the outside. I assume the tires are the original ones. Anything else I can check would be much appreciated. Could this be caused by the tires being in the condition I described?
  16. Has anyone here ever used a jig with a worm as a trailer? I've done this a few times after seeing a guy do it in a video. It surprisingly has produced some decent fish. I use a finesse jig with a trick worm trailer. Do any of you do this? -Payton

  18. Fortunately it was my 5x8 utility trailer and not my Ranger 521Z trailer. Question: How far down do you push the trailer hitch retainer clip through the hole in the pin that attaches hitch to receiver? And, what is the correct position for that clip? In the past I have only pushed it to the first indent on the clip, thinking that the larger loop was for convenience in pulling the clip when removing the pin and hitch. Yesterday after hooking up my trailer and pulling it about 65 miles the hitch came loose from the receiver and the only thing holding the trailer was safety chains. I (and fellow travelers near me on the road) were very fortunate to get it all stopped with no damage to trailer, vehicle or goods on the trailer. My lesson learned was that I'm pushing the clip all the way down to the large loop in the future. I don't need any more of that brand of excitement. Today a friend dropped by and I looked at his trailer hitch on his truck. Sure enough it was only at the first indent of the clip. He said to me that he had been pulling trailers for years like that with no problems. So did I until yesterday. I'm changing.
  19. Hey guys I got my new rod, imx mh/f and want to try out some new stuff and see what the rod is capable of. I used a few swimjigs before but really I just grabbed crap off of the shelves at Dicks and stuck it together and said voila swimjig done.So heres what im fishing in, the water at its deepest goes about 12' and is green tinted not very clear at all and tons of veggie on the bottom. The lake has tons of bass lots of smalls and a few large here and there and then there are those d**n pickerels. Even though there are craws in my area I have never seen one craw in my lake. Dont want to go above 3/4 oz. I seem to have the most catches with chartreuse and black with another dark color combo(black/purple or black/blue). So what do you experienced swimjiggers recommend? Also when you recommend something if you could give brief explanations on how to work the bait or why you chose that swimjig/trailer would be great. Thanks if you answer.Any additional info needed let me know.
