  1. I'm looking for a new "multipurpose" rod/combo that could be used for walking baits, jerkbaits, or small crankbaits; mostly medium sized trebled baits under 1 1/2 oz. Also, do you think a curado 70 would work for these kinds of applications? It would be best if any rod suggestions were under or near 200.
  2. Hello everyone, I need help with keeping my buzzbaits on top of the water.. I’m throwing a 1/2oz buzz on a 7’1 heavy with40lbs braid & a 7.3.1 reel. I switch hands mid cast so I can start my retrieval as soon as the lure hits the water sometimes even a little bit before it hits. I’ve tried to speed up my retrieval & keep my rod tip high to no luck.. The buzzbait will stay about a foot under the surface until it’s maybe 5 ft from the bank that’s when it wants to surface & act like a buzzbait should act. Any help is greatly appreciated & I thank you all in advance. Tight lines everyone!!
  3. Anybody tried these beauties? Picked one up on accident and it was likely the best thing that’s ever happened to my tackle box. Curious if someone’s further down the road than I and has some tricks or tips. I can tell it’s chock full of potential.
  4. Hi, all. New to the forum, very sorry if this has been answered already but I can't seem to find a solid answer anywhere. I'm trying to decide between the Dobyns Champion XP 683 or 684 as my kind of all-around casting rod. I'll be primarily throwing smaller topwaters like 1/2oz walking baits, 75 and 90 ploppers, 3/8oz-1/2oz jigs, and 3/8oz spinnerbaits. I also fish primarily on small river systems on my kayak up here in MN, so I wanted to stick with a slightly shorter rod so I can cast a little more accurately in tight spaces. I've come across a lot of forums that say the power on Dobyns rods are actually one step less than they're advertised. I have a 1oz Chug'n Spook and a 110 Plopper that both weigh 1oz, so I was curious for you guys that are seasoned Dobyns owners if the 683 would handle these slightly heavier lures just fine (the 683 has a lure weight of 1/4oz-3/4oz), or if I should move up to a 684 (1/4oz-1oz). My only concern is with the 683 is that if it really fishes more like a medium, that I can't rip my jigs and spinnerbaits out of the weeds as easily as I probably could with the 684, but with the 684 I'm more or less concerned the tip isn't as soft as the 683's that when I get a bite on a topwater those treble hooks don't get ripped right outta their mouths. Any thoughts and advice would be very much appreciated! Thanks, everyone!
  5. Hey BR, Recently hit the lake and got into some topwater. Attached is a new Video of the day that includes thought process, baits, and all the good details! Thanks for watching! JN
  6. Hey BR, I hit the lake recently thinking I would do one thing, but had to switch gears. I was pleasantly surprised to find some bass willing to bite my topwater bait. Hope you enjoy the video! JN
  7. ok i fish the Charles river dock in Watertown and i have been for the past 2 weeks every day for at least 1 hour each time and i havent even seen a bass yet should i leave it or no it looks good and all and it has bait fish perch sunfish and all that stuff and i might have seen people catch a bass there but ya. also this river is either murky or murky clear it has weeds and logs in the water i have already lost like 4 lures there and it has alot of green stuff that gets on my lures any tips i normally go there around 245 at latest arive around 4 and fish until 530 and no bass. i have fished it all top water senko crankbait spinnerbait crawfish and no action on anything at all except for some sunfish and 4 inch bass looking things that i can drop my lure right infront of them since they camp the dock and they will nibble it and swim away every time thats the most action i ever got. i dont know what to fish it anymore what lures to use how to use them and all that i think i need a complete refresh of knowlage and tips can yall help me out.
  8. Hey BR, Here is my most recent video that is applicable to our seasonal time frame. Hope you like it! thanks for watching...JN
  9. I need help understanding how to effectively fish a jig (especially around docks)! My favorite way to fish is by fishing docks. Whether that’s skipping a senko or tossing a top water on the sides. I’ve been told that using jigs around docks are extremely deadly but don’t understand the concept. When tossing a jig under dock do you let it sink to the bottom and hop it or can you keep the jig suspended and work in the middle of the water column back to you. How do you guys fish jigs around docks? Thanks ?
  10. So today If I had landed all the fish that attacked grandpa's old spook, I'd have caught at least 7 or 8 bass. I dont know if the hooks are just too dull or what but I got a lot of bites today but was only able to net 1 fish. I have caught a few bass on this lure just last week so I dont know why all of a sudden the hooks aren't sharp enough to stick when they blowup. It was raining and cloudy towards afternoon after not being that way for a while so maybe this had something to do with it? Anyone provide some info/clarity as to what might be happening other than needing replacement trebles? (Which I plan on doing tomarrow). All I can think of is maybe a lot of the blowups were baby post-spawn bass that couldn't really get their mouth over the spook. I will test the difference w/new trebles and report back. I'm guessing the rate will double or even triple from 1 fish to maybe 3 if im lucky ?.
  11. Hey all, I can plan on getting 4 whopper plopper 75s for my clear water lakes up north here. The smallies smash my poppers so these should have success. The problem is I have 5 options so if you could help remove one that probably isn’t necessary that would be appreciated. - Perch - Munky Butt - I know it - Bone - Loon Ones you think would work in stained waters as well are nice because I fish largies down south. Thanks for any help
  12. I have a brother in law, who lives just north of Des Moines Iowa, who loves this bait. It's his all time favourite topwater. His biggest LM bass on this was a 6lb fish, and he's caught scores of smaller LM, as well as quite a few smallmouth bass in his area too. He's generally a pond, and small lake fisherman, and likes wading creeks, and smaller rivers also. He replaces the hooks with Owner trebles, and carefully bends the prop slightly forward. I've caught fish on this one, but no larger bass, mostly, on a frog finish, or the old Heddon black shore minnow color. I do think this is a good bait though. At just under 2", it's a slightly smaller topwater than many folks like to throw. My brother in law has a whole box of these baits, in different colors. He throws them on a med spinning rod, or a med casting rod, usually with 8 or 10lb line. Anyone still throwing the Heddon Torpedo? If so, what colors do you like, and any mods to this one that have worked well? I appreciate any and all tips you can pass along regarding this old classic.
  13. As a fan of the Vixen, I'd like to know what a good alternative to these are.
  14. Hey guys so I got a question. I have a new top water rod and reel combo and I want to know what you guys think. I got power and action confused apparently. I got a 7ft Fenwick medium POWER, fast ACTION rod with a lews 6:4.1 gear ratio for popper, jitterbugs, whopper plopper, etc...no frogs. Do you think this is a good choice? I ment to get a medium POWER with a medium ACTION. thanks and tight lines!!!
  15. I tried to find a few answers regarding this and could not find what I was looking for, so pardon me if this topic has been discussed before. I am having major issues with both my WP and Booyah Toadrunner, both lures utilize a spinning "tail" to make noise/bubbles. My issue is that the lure constantly spins on retrieve on both a baitcaist and spincast and will cause the line to spin/bunch up if any slack is present. I have tried varying the speed and this does solve some of the issue but hard to tell when the lure is at a distance. I use the Palomar knot if that matters and tie directly to the lure. *** Update - Problem has been fixed (see bottom post), thank you everyone who responded with suggestions!!!!
  16. HELP So I was just fishing, with a top water frog with Out any kind of plyers since I find really think I would catch anything. Well I did and it got hooked deep in a hard spot of muscle and I could not get it out, I ended up having to leave the frog in and revive it in the water, so I wouldn’t kill this fish. Did I just kill that fish or will it shake the frog out? it was about 3-4 pounder.
  17. Hi BR, Got a new video that focuses on topwater trips, tips and hacks for more success...hope you like it! thanks for watching!
  18. Its that time of year where we begin to come out of summer and the fall is getting closer. In this video I share some baits and ideas that work well for me during this transitional period. Hope you like it and good fishing!
  19. If you have seen any of my other posts, you know I'm trying to build a casting arsenal (6 rods) on a very little budget. Most of my arsenal will consist of first gen Lightning Rods but they do not have a moderate action rod as a option. This rod will be walking a spook 90% of the time, the other 10% it will be running jr. size Whopper Plopper. Looking to spend around $45-55. Please any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! If I have to go $10-15 dollars over I will, but trying not to...
  20. Just for fun what is everyone’s favorite topwater lure/lures? my personal favorites 1. Heddon pop’n’image 2. Sexy dawg jr 3.megabass popmax Not proven to me yet but looking forward to testing this one out more this summer.
  21. I've never used one of Yo-Zuri's hardbaits. The price point is quite affordable compared to others, yet the quality and aesthetics seem very high end! What are your thoughts on this particular topwater walking lure? I have something of a love affair with the Super Spook Jr, based soley on the success I've had with it. That being said, I'm a sucker for new tackle (aren't we all?!) and would like to give them shot if they're well recommended! I really like the cupped face, slight curve to the body, and the color selections. I mainly fish for Smallmouth in clear, shallow rivers and frequently catch Pike and Largemouth. Any input on the lure, favorite colors, seasonal patterns, etc are much appreciated.
  22. Ok guys I need help! I went fishing and all bass were hitting were dragonflys. I've looked everywhere trying to find a badass Dragonfly topwater lure and can't seem to find one so I decided in making one. How would you guys make one?
  23. I wanted to start a discussion for topwater baits everyone has had success with hunting the bronzebacks. Last weekend I hooked up on a few in East TN using a 3in topwater popper, and a few with a size 90 whopper plopper, but I'm curious as to what else might be a good topwater presentations? I've had some people recommend a jerkbait and one buddy even recommended wacky rigging a senko and dragging it on the top/a few inches down, but I haven't had time to try it out. I've also seen this "double plopper" A-rig looking buzz bait deal, and am very intrigued to hear if anyone has had success with it (at $18 a piece I didn't want to dive in if it's just a bunk bait). Lend me your knowledge, fellow smallie smackers!
  24. I was looking at getting some top water toads the other day and as I was looking at them their legs reminded me of craw style baits. So I got to thinking that I could just try and craw bait and see if I could get a similar action. Has anyone used craw style baits or any other type of soft plastic as a topwater bait? I am a bank fisherman and don't want to carry around a ton of tackle.
  25. Anybody do this: take the skirt off a buzzbait and thread a plastic toad on? When would you prefer this over a regular skirt? Are there some buzzbait brands that work better than others for this? (like, bigger blades to keep the toad lifted?) Are there any toads work better than others for this? (lighter or more bouyant, perhaps?)
