  1. Hey everyone, I’ve been fishing for several years now and and just bought my first boat this spring. I’m really starting to get the hang of finding bass in ponds, lakes, and bays (Lake Ontario). With that said, I am relatively clueless about bass fishing in rivers & streams. I’ve done some trolling for walleye and caught plenty of catfish and such casting worms on a dropshot off of dams on the canal… but never a largemouth or smallmouth out of a river or stream. I live in western central NY up between the Finger Lakes and the Great Lakes. The lake fishing is great, but we also have the Erie Canal, Seneca River, and a bunch of small streams and such. I really want to learn how to catch bass on the rivers and streams around here. How similar to lake fishing is river fishing? Are you still looking for lay-downs and weed edges? Do they prefer main channel or offshoots? Deep current or shallow breaks? I feel like it’s a totally different animal, and any education would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  2. So I’m up in Northeast Ohio while I’m home for spring break and I’m having trouble fishing some of the local ponds. Everything is just starting to thaw and the pond I fish is just about half thawed/half ice. I have to fish from the bank and I usually throw a red eye shad lipless crankbait as a search bait but it seems that even my search bait is inefficient. I was out for 2 hours today in the cold and windy snow and not even so much as a bite. I switched to using a ned rig thinking they might prefer a slower presentation but no luck. I also threw a green pumpkin chatter bait for a while and no luck. I was essentially casting to the ice then reeling in and letting my lure drop from the edge of the ice to the bottom where I expect them to be. Planning on going out later this week, can anyone offer any tactics or better lure suggestions so I can catch my first winter bass? If any of you are familiar, I’m fishing the Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve. It’s got pretty clear water and the shore is shallow for about 5 feet and then has a steep drop off, deep enough that I can’t see the bottom.
  3. So, while I have fallen victim to my share of broken lines and lost lures, I often wonder whether or not I’m pairing my line with the right tackle; obviously not! In my search for answers, very specific answers at that, I’ve come across what seems to have been the most thorough and yet efficient article on ‘bassfishin’ website titled fishing-line-guide [I couldn’t add link for some reason]. I mean, yes!!! Finally, a very detailed article, but... wow! I couldn’t help but feeling like my three rod, three reel arsenal will get me no where. I realize that there ideal setups per technique or presentation but where’s the middle of the road? How can I make the most out of a reel without having to switch out the line with each lure change? For example, if one of my rod and reel combos can work many techniques and handle (obviously) the weight of many lures but technically based on the article requires a different line for each, how do I get around having to switch out the line? Does anyone have better recommendations? I fish (freshwater) with monofilament because I’m fairly new to fishing and that’s what’s always recommended to me. My current reels and rods are as follows: G.Loomis Mag Bass 782c 6’6” Med Fast Mag Bass 844c 7’ Heavy Fast Crankbait 864C DF 7’2” Med-Heavy Mod Shimano Chronarch 200E7 7.0:1 Curado K 6.2:1 & 8.5:1
  4. I'm gonna be moving here shortly to Florida, and i've gained quite the arsonal of freshwater lures, which i'd like not to go to waste. Can i use my freshwater lures in saltwater? Will they work? If so which ones?
  5. I have a Calcutta 100GT TE that is without a rod currently, and I have a tournament in two weeks. The Gear Ratio is 5.8:1, and I am stumped on what type of rod and technique I should assign it. Any recommendations? I've thought about making it a spinnerbait reel, but I am not sure if 5.8:1 is considered slow rolling or not. Being a shore fisherman as well, making it a deep cranking rod also does not seem to be a swell option. Jig applications are out of the question, as I am picking up a Chronarch XG soon specifically for jigging.
  6. Greetings All. A couple of quick ones on fishing the foil in summer.. For tournaments on our northern grass lakes, if you've decided to target milfoil what percentage of the time are you typically spending working the edges vs. up inside the bed probing sweet spots that you've pre-located? Are there any good rules of thumb (weather factors?) which tell you when you want to focus on the edges vs. inside? I've heard many times that hard bottom spots buried up underneath the foil can be the sweetest of the sweet spots. Aside from getting out and imaging in the early spring, are there any good techniques for finding hard bottom areas in foil beds once the weeds are up? Thanks! -- Rick
  7. I have a 6'8'' st. Croix casting rod. Right now it's my "everything rod" because I only only have a couple rods at the moment. So my question is: once I have obtained some other technique-specific rods, what technique could I apply my 6'8'' to? I love the rod a lot and would like to have it for throwing certain baits instead of selling it, but I just am not sure what I can use it for. keep in mind it's casting, so I wouldn't want to dropshot with it. all responses are appreciated. Thanks!
  8. I fished the bluegill colored flick shake wacky style today after a heavy thunderstorm in Va. There was a creek running into a pond on a golf course. Very muddy pulled out a couple of these. I didn't think wacky rig would work after all these hot days. Any other way with success with these worms? I want to use them in every situation I just haven't had success many other ways. If you say flick shake I would like to know when the right time to use this. 3.5 pounds.
  9. Hello wide web i have a question for all of you! I live in the northeast (MA). I have this pond near me, medium in size, clear water and not heavily fished at all. It has a crazy large variety of types of shore line. There is some with lots of fallen trees and beaver dams, some with grass and pads, some with large rocks some just clear shallows and some with sand. The shores usually range from 2-8 feet in depth and gets deep in the middle. There are real monsters in here , I know first hand. What would your strategy be on this pond? Where would you start in the morning? what lures would you use? I am in a kayak so I can cover the entire pond.
  10. I decided to teach myself pitching. So, after a few youtube videos and went into the yard and practiced for a while. Farthest distance so far is about 15 yards. What is the typical pitching distance?
  11. There has to be exercises or systematic training/practice methods to improve your fishing but I haven't heard of many. What are they? These can be "off the water" and "on the water."
  12. How would I fish this?
  13. I see a lot of posts about fishing during the day and early morning hours but how do you guys approach night fishing? Do you use a lantern, headlamp or do you have cat-like vision(lol)? What lures do you use and do you still target the same areas you would throughout the day? How do you keep the bugs away and what do you wear if it's especially humid?
  14. Being a novice in Bass fishing, there are two techniques/lures that I am not good at using. The spinnerbait, and the jig. This year I want to really work hard on one of these two techniques, but I am not sure which one I should start with. I have 3 or 4 of each lure, but don't use them often because I didn't catch much fish with them (not a confidence bait). Now I know the argument can be made that each one has its time and place etc. etc. etc. I understand, but I don't get out on the water enough to learn two techniques in one season. I just really want to focus on one and get good at it. Then I can work on the other afterwards. So at the end of the day, if you had to teach me only one technique/lure, which would it be? Spinnerbait or Jig? I will be ordering a batch of new lures in the next couple of weeks here and look forward to everyone's input. This will help me decide which route to go.
  15. I have been watching numerous videos of big swimbaits catching giant fish and being I live in Minnesota I have really been thinking about this. Has anyone had much success up here throwing these big baits? and if so, what are the details - where, when, why, how, tips, tricks, areas to target, etc. Really curious!
  16. Hey!!! So with all this rain we have gotten, in south Florida, water height has risen, causing certain parts of the lake to flow. This in turn has caused the fishing to be a bit more difficult. To fight this I've been fishing shallow covered waters with no current. I'm just wondering what other people are doing. Thanks for the info!!!
  17. Okay so I'm a 15 year old and I've just now started getting serious with fishing. I've fished catfish all my life, and caught a couple bass and croppie. I really like the "fight" a bass and croppie give you rather than a catfish. Any recommendations as to where to fish, what lures to fish with, or techniques? Oh and I live in Memphis Tennessee so if anybody wants to pond I'm down. -Patrick
