  1. The bluegills are starting to go full spawn mode in my neck of the woods and im sure in many of yours. Im still pretty new to catching greenbacks and am curious yalls favorite ways to catch them around bluegill beds! Its seems like they would be a hotspot for big bass going after fish on beds on the outskirts of colonies. I'm thinking wake baits, weightless worms, flukes, poppers, and chatterbaits. Any recommendations or tricks youre willing to share?
  2. Had an awesome day out on the water today! Scored myself 40 fish with a 5lb 5oz kicker to top it all off. She didn't appear to be full of eggs so I'm thinking maybe postspawn? Caught her on a Jig in a submerged tree in about 10 - 15ft of water. Very pretty fish, gave me a short workout ?.
  3. im looking for a good casting reel that a can use for inshore salt water. i was looking at the tranx 200and the curado k. if anyone has any suggestions they would be very much appreciated. also does anyone know if the tatula 200 or tatula elite are saltwater capable
  4. I need help understanding how to effectively fish a jig (especially around docks)! My favorite way to fish is by fishing docks. Whether that’s skipping a senko or tossing a top water on the sides. I’ve been told that using jigs around docks are extremely deadly but don’t understand the concept. When tossing a jig under dock do you let it sink to the bottom and hop it or can you keep the jig suspended and work in the middle of the water column back to you. How do you guys fish jigs around docks? Thanks ?
  5. I've heard Spring prespawn is a great time to catch bass. Well, in my experience, that is entirely false. Locating the fish hasn't been an issue because I wear polarized lenses when I hit the pond, I can SEE the bass floating around, and in numbers! It's remarkable actually. So I can see where they are, I cast past them, and work the bait right up to them. What do they do? Act like it doesn't exist or sometimes run away like they're spooked. What's the deal?! They're not hungry? Senkos freak them out? I don't get it. I've tried all kinds of lures from jigs to cranks to plastics and fished in the morning as well as noon (I work nights so evening is not possible). I don't understand how I can bring it right to their mouth and they turn away...
  6. Hello, I was wondering what are you guys favorite lures when it is just starting to get the temperature over 50's and in the mid-'60s. I tend to fish pretty clear water, it has been pretty windy these past days, and I tend to fish ponds, but I am trying to fish the Nashua River but I have never known what to really throw in Rivers even though I only live a couple of minutes away. So what are your guy's recommendations? Thanks Martin Sierra
  7. So I’m new here and I would really appreciate some help because I just can’t find that much stuff online about smallmouth patterns. I’m looking at getting into smallmouth fishing this spring and I know body’s of water near me but I need help on where to find them. It’s a large resivour and I have some decent electionics. I’ve heard to look for offshore humps in about 15 feet of water for spawning, is that true? Otherwise where do I find them in the spring? Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks
  8. I'm new to the forum and I know parts of my questions have been answered on other boards, but I wanted to know how the smallmouth fishing is in March on Pickwick Lake and what parts or areas of the rivers are best to start. I will be making 3 -3 day trips in March to Pickwick Lake. My question is how is the small mouth fishing in the yellow creek , JP Coleman area? I am trying not to have to buy an Alabama fishing license, but if it's much better from bear creek back to the dam, I will just buy one. Thanks, Mike
  9. So I’ve gone out once a day (for at least 3 hours) the last 4 days. All the ponds around me are still partially/totally frozen. For the ones that aren’t totally frozen I’ve been throwing jigs to the deepest spots of the pond, or at least the deepest spots I can cast to and I’ve had no luck at all. Not even a bite. It’s honestly really discouraging and I’m about to hang up my hat and wait until it gets warmer out. It sucks getting all bundled up and standing in the cold snow and wind to just get frustrated. What do you guys think, should I just wait until the water warms??
  10. Well, despite getting to fish later into 2016 than I ever have before, the winter seemed to drag on forever. However, the ice is all gone, I've had the boat out to make sure everything was working as it should, and I've got a tournament fast approaching. The fishing season is still closed on most inland waters in WI (I know, it's dumb), but the waters of the Mississippi River have an open season year round. Last Friday, my dad and I had a chance to head down to Fountain City and get out on a stretch of river that neither of us had fished before. We really lucked out weather wise as rain was in the forecast, but it was dying down just as we got there, and didn't come again until just before we were ready to leave. Water temps were between 49 (main river) and 53 (backwaters). Despite the warmer surface temps, the bass seemed sluggish and weren't willing to chase anything down, but were still willing to eat. Almost everything we caught was on either small craws light texas rigged, or on a jig. In the 6 hours we fished, we managed to land somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 bass. All but 3 were of legal size and very healthy for their size. We also caught 3 norhterns, 3 dogfish (bowfin), and lost at least 7 other fish. Fish were relating to shallow wood close to deeper water. A few such areas we caught multiple fish off a single piece of cover with our highest being 3 bass on 3 consecutive casts to one piece. Overall, it was a great way to start the year off, and it has me excited to get back! I'm currently working on trying to take tomorrow off work so I can get at least one more day of prefishing in before the tourney and seeing if I can locate some areas with a little bigger fish. **Warning** Pic heavy post as excitement of rippin' lips kept the camera flashing!
  11. I am on chickamauaga lake and going fishing in the morning. The water temperature is right at or a little below 70. What depths and areas/ structures should I target for largemouths? Also, what top water bait would be good, or should I he throwing top water at all?
  12. I think it's safe to say that I'm all set for fishing to start up! Stocked up on the staples and picked up all the new stuff I wanna try! Jigs and terminal tackle New tubes and The Ned Rig!! Hard baits (cranks, top, jerks) Spinners (aglias, war eagle finesse)
  13. I finally got a chance to get on the water this past weekend, which is just in time to since the first tourney of the year is next weekend. My dad and I headed down to the Mississippi River since it's the only place around with open season right now. Saturday was spent probing a lot of backwater areas with water temps in the upper 50's and I believe even 60* in one area. Fishing wasn't fast and furious by any means, but we caught quite a few northerns most of which were on the small side. Towards the end of the day we ventured closer to the main river and caught a few better fish, but only hooked into one smallie that was probably 16". Sunday proved to be a better day for us. We stayed a lot closer to the main river and cool water which was roughly 47* to 51*. Again, we managed to catch a bunch of northerns along the way, with a few better sized ones decent for eating. My dad pulled in a 23" walleye and I had a bonus crappie that t-boned my jerkbait We didn't fish as long, but manage a limit of bass as we bounced from spot to spot. The two best were 4lbs a piece one being brown and the other being green. In total we probably had 14 1/2 lbs with one squeeker. The best producing baits this weekend were by far and away jerkbaits with all but a few fish falling for them. Surprisingly, we did better fishing the colder water even in some places with current. Hopefully we can get on them next weekend and start the tourney season out with a win! A few highlights from the weekend:
  14. Hi guys, This is my first post on here! A very exciting day for me since I've been using the site a lot before this and never being able to contribute. Anyways, I am 15 and jobless and looking for a spinning rod I can chuck some senkos on this summer. Preferably in the 40-60 ish price range, although some slight exceptions could be made. Also, the length and action should be about 6'6-7'0 and med extra fast. Some rods I have been looking at have been the Shimano Sellus, Fenwick Eagle and HMX, Berkley Lightning shock, and some BPS rods. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks, and have a good day -Justen
  15. i am new to jerkbait fishing and am more or less lost when it comes to fishing them. Any advice on brands, rods, gear ratio, technique, and what time of year to use them?
  16. Hi all, . I live in North Georgia and don't get to fish as often as I used to, so I thought I might seek your advice. I've got a trip planned to a small private fishery (also in north Georgia) on the third weekend of April around the new moon and im expecting the bass to be spawning. The lake im fishing is about 20 acres, holds big largemouth, has a good mix of cover/structure (including blow downs and rock piles), and the lake has a lot of crappie in it. I have not seen shad on my previous trips. With this info, could you guys suggest some ways to target bass other than site fishing in these conditions? In the past I have had my best success there in the shallows on 6" Texas rigged zoom lizards. I have also had sporadic success on a spinnerbait, senkos, and a Devils Horse. I have caught several fish in the 3 and 4 lb range but none of the big females I know are in there. What would you guys do? Thanks so much in advance!!! p.s.(the attached picture is of my big fish from last year, caught on a devil's horse on a rainy day)
  17. What are some good lures to use during the bass spawn in the spring?
  18. Today went fishing on a small, stained water pond. I didn't get even a single bite! Don't understand why. It's spring, warm water, spawn. This how I fished:started with topwater popper (green back yellow/orange belly). Next: gold/grey ratling shalow crankbait. Next: green/white mid range diving crankbait. Next: Spinner bait small colorado blade with black/gold fflakes chartruse teil and the other one was baby bass. Next: Brown jig with KVD cray fish (I guess) with blue and green flakes. Next: texas riged junebug trickworm. Next: Dropshot stickbait watermelon with gold and green flakes. I tried different speeds and retrives etc. I don't understand what have I done wrong. Not even a single bite.
  19. Hey guys...Bass are about to spawn and I was wondering, if you had one lure to fish a bass bed with what would it be? Thanks in advance
  20. How can you tell whether your specific pond/lake is in the pre spawn, spawn, or post spawn. I've heard things about the pollen collecting indicates that spawn has arrived, but is there other signs?
  21. I've read a lot of things that say the jerk bait is a go-to for spring fishing, however I am unfamiliar with it. Any suggestions on how to work it or size/color selections?
  22. I live on a 30 mile long lake that is shaped like a river. Its widest point i think is 300 ft and is 30 miles long. It winds through central louisiana. I have tried getting out to go bass fishing for the last month with very little luck at all. Ive only caught one fish with bouncing a jig through a fallen tree. The lake does not have much contour change at all. Its just shallow on the edge and deep in the midlle which is about 8ft deep. So theres not much change for the movement of the fish that happens on larger lakes. It may sound like a horrible place to fish but it is known for produceing good bass fishing. I just need to know how to fish it. The only structure is probably some fallen trees along the bank although there is tons of boat houses. I just need advice on how to fish this at this time of year.
  23. hey guys, so I'm not entirely new to bass fishing just trying to take it to the next level and bought a boat for lanier. I've started compiling some documents to laminate and put in a binder for the boat - any input would be great.
  24. After a long (and cold) winter, spring finally emerges, and so do I from a long salmon/steelhead season. I'm feeling kind of rusty from spring 2013 (mostly because fourteen out of fifteen bass i hooked came off...).I seem to have better luck around autumn. But i'm looking for some pointers on how to keep these postspawn bass on. Is it something i'm doing, or is it inevitable?
  25. I am going to crankbait, jerkbait, shad rap on this new reel and I am going to put 10 or 12 # fluorocarbon on it. The plan is to get a reel around the $200 retail range cheaper on the "auction site". I have researched some and would love some opinions on these reels: 1) Lews tournament pro speed spool $148 (leaning toward this one) 2)Lews tournament MG speed spool $104 or 129 (retail) 3) Abu Garcia Revo Stx $153 4) Pflueger supreme XT $135 6) Johnny morris signature series $160
