  1. I've noticed there has yet to be a discussion about the new Shimano Vanford 2024. If any of the shimano heads out there have an opinion on the upgrades that have been made to this new version, please share. Additionally, what use cases would you reccomend this reel for and in what size/gear ratio. I'm trying to decide on the perfect one to choose from on digitakas website as, I believe, there are some jdm specific versions available there. Which are jdm specific, and what benefits if any are there to one. I'll be using it for freshwater bass and crappie, likely in the 2500 to 3000 size with lighter lures like ned rigs in mind but also ideally versatile enough for general use. Something to fill the gap that my curado mgl 151 can't. Tight lines folks.
  2. My spinning reel makes a clicking noise at the lowest and highest points when my spool goes up and down. I saw on another thread that its from an screw on this oscillating piece that is loose, so I tried tightening it and turns out it was tight, so I don't even know why its clicking but anyways when trying to put it back together I had this spring that I needed to put in place and I cant get it into place and I just want to know if anyone knows how to do it. I even bent the spring trying to put it back into place. I somehow always try fixing something little and I make it way worse. The spring is highlighted in the photo and the area it needs to go has an arrow pointing towards it.
  3. I bought a brand new 7’ Lews Mach Smash spinning combo recently. From everything I’ve read & been told, it’s one of the better bass spinning rod combos out there around the $100 mark. I bought it because I broke the rod on my Abu Garcia Jordan Lee 7’ spin combo. I was expecting the smash to be somewhat as effective as my abu, or even better. Yet, I can’t get that lews to make a decent cast. I got wal mart Shakespeares to cast the same lure even further. So I put the Jordan Lee reel on my lews rod and it casts like a charm. I’ve re-spooled my lews reel multiple times with good line, lighter line, … compared casts with different lure sizes, tried everything. Why does this $100 combo reel cast worse than a $20 wal mart combo? Obviously the reel is the problem. I don’t see any obvious issues with the reel itself so I’m really curious to find out what’s going on with this Mach smash reel. Is it just a bad reel? Am I missing something? Very frustrating! Anyone else own this combo? If so, How is it working out for you? Also, I am new to this forum. How do I edit a post? I spelled “Lew’s” wrong in my subject title. Smh, how can i change it?
  4. what's up guys, basically I am conflicted between a 1000 and 2500 size reel... maybe even 2000 size but feel like might as well get the 2500 at that point. Anyway I don't fish spinning setups a ton but I'm wanting to get into it so I can take it to the creeks so for sure some smaller sun fish some rock bass and the occasional 2-3lb max smallmouth will be targeted as well. I just don't want having the 1000 to screw me out of a decent bass when it comes. going to put it on a 6'6 rod medium fast. wanting to use braid. thanks for anyone that has any advice.
  5. Hello! I was bank fishing the other day with my casting combo. The casting reel is a Shimano Scorpion DC reel with 10lb mono. A gentleman with a spinning combo came and started to fish with me using a weighted wacky rig. He was launching that thing...really far. I wasn't catching anything on my topwater frog so he asked me if I wanted a weighted senko (he pulled in a 5lb bass within 15-20 min). I took his offer. He said my casting reel should be able to launch the wacky rig further than his spinning. His friends apparently can launch it nearly to the middle of the lake. I was not even close, I changed the break to 1. Also, I am fairly new using a casting reel. Only had this for a couple months. What is going on? 3 things I can think of is my technique, type of line/test and rod type? The guy had braid, forgot what test.
  6. I purchased a Daiwa reel today. Picked it up and it was attached to an Eagle Claw rod. Got them together for $2. I'm more interested in learning more about the reel. It's an older model and can't find too much about the reel. I decided that posting about it here would probably be the easiest way to get information. (I'm sorry about having to put in links to show pictures of the reel. I had no other option because the files were too big to attach to the post. If the links fail and you can't see the images, let me know. I can find another way to get them for you to see.) https://ibb.co/xgBGLfp https://ibb.co/Sv8NHSn
  7. Hello guys. I wanted some advise about buying a spinning reel bit I'm in a budget. I plan to fish inshore in saltwater. I will mostly target fishes not greater than 3lb. I'm looking at two cheap spinning reels: Daiwa revros Lt and Okuma Ceymar Match ( cost around to 50$). Can anyone give me some advise which one would be the best? Any experience with this reels? Thanks
  8. I've been trying to find the best knot to use to tie a crankbait. People are saying to use a Palomar, improved clinch, Trilene, or a uni knot. These are all great options, but I have two things that make this questionable: split rings and line type. My four crankbaits come with split rings, and I'm not removing the rings anytime soon. What are the best knots to tie crankbaits with monofilament and the best knots for crankbaits with fluorocarbon? Both lines are light and under 10-pound test.
  9. Need some clarification; Is it recommended or not recommended to use braid with a slow oscillation spinning reel and why?
  10. I am new to this forum and just got back into fishing this summer after taking a few years off. I am trying to get into catfishing and I finally think I may have found a spot for catfishing since I don't have a boat. I am fishing with 65 and 100 pound braided line with sunfish as bait. I learned that you need heavy drag like 20-30 pounds for catfishing. My reel is the Avenger AV 40b spinning reel and I looked up the max drag on this specific reel and it said it was 13 pounds. My other reel is rated at around 30 pounds. I cranked the drag all the way up on my 40b reel and I could not pull it out, so I am having a hard time believing that it is 13 pounds at this point. I then tried the reel that was around 30 pounds max drag and it was tough but I could pull it. So I thought maybe the 40b has a "lock drag" on it. So I looked it up and found a forum on here that was talking about "lock drag", however, they said that max drag and "lock drag" are the same thing. I know for a fact it is not 13 pounds and I know my source said my specific model is 13 pounds max drag. So I am really confused as how the max drag/lock drag is only 13 pounds when I couldn't pull it but I could pull 30 pounds of drag on my other reel? Can someone explain to me all this confusion?
  11. Hey there, for bass fishing, what size Spinning Reel would you tend to think is more versatile, a 200, 2000 , size or 250, 2500 size? I'm using braid so I'm not sure how critical diameter is. I've got a 2500 and am going to buy another reel and wondering if I should get the same size or go a little smaller?
  12. Does anyone have any experience with these reels?DAIWA FUEGO LT, DAIWA BG, or PFLUEGER SUPREME I'm buying a new Spinning Reel in the next week or two and I've narrowed it down to these 3. please don't offer up any others as I've made up my mind as to these 3. thanks
  13. Hello I am looking into buying the berkley mini line spooler and i was wondering, what is the difference between using that one or the portable line spooler and if any of you have used it and your experiences with it. Thank you https://www.amazon.com/Berkley-BAMLS-Mini-Line-Spooler/dp/B005OTYVTS/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1515194708&sr=1-1&keywords=berkley+mini+line+spooler
  14. Shakespeare Ugly Stik 6'6" Ultra Light 2 Piece Rod Okuma Ceymar C30 Spinning Reel What are your thoughts on the above combo? What type of fish would you be fishing for with a 6'6" ultra light rod sporting a Ceymar C30? I was thinking about using the setup for micro-fishing, with Frog Hair 7x Tippet and some size 24 hooks. Unless the rod and reel would be best suited for another type of fishing (along with different line/hooks)... Thoughts?
  15. Are Line Roller bearings on spinning reels usually around the same size like reel handle bearings? I have a few reels that I believe have bushings in the line roller that I would like to upgrade to bearings. If anyone knows what size to look for that would be greatly appreciated.
  16. i can't get the handle off my cabelas tournament zx it is stuck or something. Any ideas?
  17. After I've had multiple problems with my Shakespeare Excursion reel I've decided to look into a more expensive reel made by a reputable company. Cheap 20$ reels haven't been cutting it for me. I've narrowed it down to a Pflueger president limited edition or a Pflueger president. I fish mostly for lm bass, sm bass ,bluegill, drum ,and pike. There's quite a price difference in the two reels so I want to make a good choice. I will be paring it with a 6 6 medium action ugly stik
  18. Hi everyone! I just finished my fishing reel project prototype #1. It is designed and built based on a regular spinning reel. The main purpose of my design is to improve the controllability and solve the line twist problem. I did this as my Independent study and of course, for fun!!! Working in the sports fishing field and designing fishing gears is my dream. I figured I might just start doing some small projects and hopefully they can help me get a chance to work for one of the fishing companies there and keep learning. I can’t stop thinking how the technologies today gonna change the future of fishing gears. For example, micro fabrication. Try to think about a super small sensor built into the spool of a bait caster which detects the RPM and sends signal to a control module. Then the solenoid which controlled by the module will apply a brake to the spool accordingly. All of the components can be built almost weightless by micro fabrication. It can give you a 6oz DC reel which has further cast and NO more backlash under any condition. Here is another one. Today, the self-balancing scooter are everywhere so what about a self-balancing compact boat? Not every situation needs a 21-foot professional boat and not everyone can afford it either. For small pond and lakes, a small boat will work much better. With the integration of self-balancing ability, even the little boat can make you feel like standing on the ground. That will be really cool right? Same as lures, rods and all the accessories, you never know, some small innovations or the integration of current technology may change the way of fishing. I know they may sounds a little bit unrealistic but it is fun to think about them. I do have some small ideas in my head, I might start doing some of them if I have time. This semester is pretty crazy though... Any feedback will be appreciated!! And if you have any suggestions which can help me figured out a way to step into the field please let me know. It’s nothing about money at all. Get the chance to working with the professionals, keep learning learning learning and doing what I love is more important than anything. If there is a chance, I will fight for it.
  19. So recently I have been looking for a nice baitcaster reel. It so happens that while cleaning g out my garage I found a Abu Garcia, Black Max 1. It says on the side that it has 2 ball bearings and an intstant anti-reverse mechanism. To me it just looks like a basic baitcaster reel, no special round bail or anything. After looking in the internet, I have not been able to find the product at all. All that comes up is the Black Max 2. Has anybody heard of this reel before and does it sound like a good product?
  20. Hey guys, New to the forum but have been reading great threads with helpful information that past few weeks. Figured I would join and ask for some great advice myself! I am looking to pick up a new spinning reel for average largemouth fishing. I think I have decided on the Pflueger President 6930 over a Shimano based on price and recent quality reviews, and I am looking for an affordable rod. I came across an Ugly Stik 7' MH/F for $40 bucks and a free shirt lol Anyone have any experience or similar combos? I was told the 7' might be too big but I personally don't think so. Would I be better with a 6'6" M/F? I am currently using my old Shimano GR-X1200 my father gave me on a Berkley Graphite 6' but want to use this rod for trout and have a separate bass rod. Thanks! -Steve
  21. just a heads up...for us spinning reel guys.. Gander Mountain has a $30 rebate on the Supreme MGX AND a $15 egift card plus free shipping since it is over $50... just thought I'd let everyone know.
  22. I have spinning reel Team Daiwa Fuego 2500a which I used for a few years. It is my favorite one but unfortunately it broke. Does anyone know where I can fix it?
  23. What is the difference between the two? Thanks
  24. Yesterday we stopped by Dick's and I wandered over to the fishing department to look at rods. Noticed a section with all their new 2014 rods and found a 7' spinning rod for $15 so I grabbed it. It's a Daiwa Sweepfire 702 mfs rod with these specs: Model Length Number Power Action (Feet) Pieces Line Wt. (Lb.) Lure Wt. (Ounces) No. Guides SWC 702MFS MH F 7' 2 6 - 14 1/8 - 3/4 6 It's fiberglass, not graphite and I know it's not a high dollar rod by any means but I'm at the point in my life where my 16 year old son keeps grabbing my good Fenwick HMG casting rods and I'm hoping that this new one will tempt him more and make him quit using the good ones. But now I need a reel for my it. I don't have any problem with spending more money on this reel, say top out around $80. So what would be a good fit for this rod? I've heard good things about Okuma and looked (online) at an Avenger - B at Academy and yesterday I played with a couple different ones at Dick's but nothing rang my bell. I didn't like the ABU-GARCIA Cardinal STX at all but the Revo I really liked. I just didn't want to spend that much money on a reel for a $15 rod. I'm a longtime Mitchell fan but I'm not so sure about their newer offereings. I had an old 308 about 8 years ago that just kind of fell apart after a couple years of light use and I just got a bad taste in my mouth for them. I plan on putting Braid on this combination and use it for frogging and just general use. Does anyone have any suggestions?
  25. I have had the Abu Garcia Revo sx 30 for over a year now and have finally come to the conclusion that this reel will handle any bass you may come across. This reel is extremely sturdy feeling and is very smooth but connected at well. It handles braid exceptionally well and even the spinning reels nightmare fluorocarbon is not a problem for the reel. The drag is the most impressive thing on this reel. Yesterday while fishing a small lipless crankbait I hooked up with a 15 pound carp that made 8 runs that averaged about 5-6 seconds each and this reel handled them flawlessly the start up was smooth and there was no jolting by the reel as the fish made it's run. This is an exceptional reel and I would recommend this reel to anyone looking for a spinning reel in the 150 to 200 dollar price range. Tight lines Andrew
