  1. Hey all, I’m looking to buy a new setup for my jig/chatter bait/spinner bait/some swim baits. I’m looking for a MH-MF rod and a reel to match it. Like the title says I would like to stay under the $180 range. Any recommendations?
  2. Hello. I’m im looking for a rod reel combo that would be good to use to carry with me in my car. I drive a small Honda accord and right now I’m carrying a one piece abu Garcia vendetta 7’ 6” with a shimano slx dc 150 baitcaster however it has to go through the ski hole. When people are in my car they bump it and lean on it and I’ve noticed the eyelets on the rod are bending. I’m looking for something small and lightweight that will fit in my trunk out of the way but still has the strength and reliability to catch some nice bass. I like spinning reels but prefer baitcasters. Thanks for your imput and happy fishing?
  3. My question is as follows: What do y’all use or think is a good size rod for a 6:3:1 baitcaster reel with the intent to use crankbaits on it such as the DT-6 and DT-10? I have heard a 7’ to 7’ 2” power: medium and action:moderate is a good rod for crankbait fishing. What are your thoughts or personal setups?
  4. Im really starting to get into fishing again n Im driving my self a lil nuts lol im trying to find the best set up for top water like frogs, whoppers, ect. I have my spinning rod for my finesse fishing then I have my medium rod with 6.4.1 reel for my crankbaits jerkbait ect. Now question is my medium set up good for jigs an swimbaits? I really want a 3rd set up for top water an heavier flippin, jigs, ect. If i can get pointed in the right direction id appeciate it. Thanks for the help in advance.
  5. Hey so I’m fishing a pond near a college campus. The air temps have been hovering around 45° for about a week now and when it’s not too windy I’m able to get out for an hour or two. Unfortunately this pond is fished by any and all anglers on campus because it is the only pond nearby. That means the fish have probably seen anything and everything imaginable. I’ve been to it 3 times and got skunked each time. Do you guys have any tactics that you use for VERY heavily fished ponds? PS. The pond is basically a big shallow circle with its deepest point in the center. It’s small too. Small enough to walk around the pond in under 10 minutes.
  6. I'm looking for a frog/flipping n pitching rod and I have narrowed it down to two options. I like both the Powell Max 3d 736 and the Dobyns Sierra 735c but I'm not sure if they are good choices. Should I choose one of these rods or go with another option? I have a budget around $220 and want to stay in 7'3"-7'5" range.
  7. Hey All, Currently I have the following setups that I like to fish for bass and panfish with: St. Croix Premier Casting 7' MF / Shimano Metanium MGL St. Croix Avid X 7' MLF / Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 2500 I would like to target catfish in the near future and have a couple of questions regarding what I would have to purchase to do so. I know that I am not going to want to be using a heavy bait setup with the current spinning gear that I have (3oz weight on a modified carolina rigs). Am I able to stick with just upgrading my spinning rod to a MHF and pairing it with my Stradic? Will the reel be able to handle what I am trying to catch? It may sound like a silly question but I just want some second opinions to make sure that I am not going to break my setup and to reassure I'm not being overly dramatic. Do you guys have any recommendations for a good affordable rod to get the job done? I am thinking around $100 but I am open for all options.
  8. I've just been getting into bass fishing early this summer and am looking to buy a new set up. I've just been using my walleye set-up and tying a frog or a buzzbait on that but I'm looking to get a set-up just for bass. I've been doing research and I've seen that people say go with a 7'-7'3" heavy casting rod with fast action with heavy braided line (40-55 lb). But as I thought about it more was thinking I'd like to stay with a spinning reel. I have some experience with a baitcaster type reel, it's what I have on my muskie rods. But I'm much more comfortable with a spinning reel and have much better accuracy and finesse with it. So I'm just looking to find out what the best set up for me would be and if a spinning reel can handle heavy braid, or if like 20-25 lb would work. I'll primarily be using frogs and buzzbaits for bass, I'd like to be able to toss a spoon for northern too but that's not essential. Any suggestions for a setup, I'd like to keep it under $250 for the rod and reel, or just feedback would be great. Thanks a lot
  9. Hey guys, so I'm looking into buying a topwater /jerkbait rod that can also handle buzzbaits, soft plastics, etc.) but mainly for topwater/ jerkbaits! . The only dilemma i have is whether to buy a rod in the 7ft medium so it can be more versatile, or the 6'6 medium. Also, any rod eccomendations? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!
  10. I could have SWORE there was a saltwater section on BassResource.com but I guess not! If you don't care to read my rambling, I have a TL:DR at the bottom of the post! Let me put it straight. I'm moving to Florida permanently. Every reel I own is a Daiwa Tatula, Tatula CT, and Tatula CT Type R, and Zillion. I have multiples of all these reels. Love the Tatulas. I really don't want to dunk any of my Tats in salt. So I'm in the market for a new reel (anything for new gear, right?). Was checking out loads of sub 100 dollar cylindrical reels just to use in the salt and not care about... Not very happy with the choices. So I figure ehhh. Might as well go big or go home, right? So right now I have the Lexa HD 300 picked out. I originally thought why not go with the 400 for the whopping extra 100 yards of line capacity... But here's the point of this thread... Do I need that capacity? According to the internet, this reel holds about 250 yards of 30 pound braid, and considering the reel has under 30 pounds of drag, I don't see why I would need to go any higher than 30 pounds for open water. Maybe if I want to try to hit some pier or bridge snook, then I'd have to step it up to 50 or 65 pound I guess? TL:DR In any case, how many yards can a fish under 100 pounds drag off the spool? Is 250 or even just 200 yards enough line for the ocean? I have never fished for any saltwater species and if I happen to land onto a big tarpon or jack, how much would they be able to peel off of the reel? It's got a whopping 25 pounds of drag, keep in mind.
  11. Just a little something I came up with while at work, feel free to share. Looking back several years ago this would have been very helpful for a young starting out me. Not sure if anyone has ever made one of these on here but I have never seen one. Enjoy!
  12. Can someone tell me if this reel (http://m.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Abu-Garcia-Revo-STX-Spinning-Reel-REVO2STX10&i=912087) would be a good pair for this rod (http://m.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=St-Croix-Legend-Tournament-Bass-Casting-Rod-610-Medium-Light&i=451547) I really don't have time to check. Anything would be great. Also I'd appreciate any alternate suggestions.
  13. Hi, I was wanting to get a new setup and wanted to get a Shimano Chronarch ci4+ and an Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0 Rod (just an idea). What is a good Rod and Reel combo? I also like the *** *** or C low profile. Thank you.
  14. Hey guys.. I need help with 2 baitcasters setups.. What type of rod and line do you suggest for: 1. Spinnerbait / Buzzbaits and 2. Top waters like Zara spooks, poppers thanks!
  15. Hey guys been fishing for about a year now mostly sturgeon and strippers off a tidal river now getting into bass. I just picked up a 6ft 6 Fenwick HMX M/fast with an Abu Garcia orra sx reel. Now that its winter time what tackle and line would you guys suggest? Thanks
  16. I'm new to the forum, so I'm not 100% sure if I'm posting this in the right spot. So there's a deal going on for the Okuma Concept C3-40x for 50% off. I feel like this is a pretty good deal for the rod so I would like to get one. There are limited sizes left to buy but the two I'm looking at are the 6'8" Heavy F and the 6'10" MH F. I was wondering what applications these rods could be specialized for. I feel like the 6'10" could make a decent worm and jig rod, but I'm not sure what size the jig or worm it could handle. Could it also work as a squarebill rod with the Fast Tip? I still have a lot to learn yet so I would like to hear some ideas from the members on here. I like to throw heavy cover swim jigs, the Dirty Jigs Swim jigs in particular with the heavy duty hooks with a small swimbait as a trailer, and was wondering if the 6'8" Heavy would make a good heavy cover swim jig rod or what that rod could be used for since I'm not really familiar with the use of short stout rods (maybe pitching?). Thanks for all the info you guys can give me!
  17. Hey everyone. I'm looking to get a new spinning setup this year, and am not looking to spend a whole lot of money for one since I am a kid! I was wondering if you could give me your input on what you think a good spinning setup for be to buy under $90 would be. It doesn't necessarily have to be a rod reel combo, just anything that is under $90 altogether. I will be using this rod for bass fishing in medium sized lakes. It would also be a huge help to me if you could give me specifications for rod length, action, reel size and gear ratio because it is all very confusing to me! Thanks for all opinions!
  18. Hey all, I was wondering I anybody could recommend gear to stock a Plano six-tray tackle box. Man, those things are huge! I already have some stuff in there, like: Catfish hooks and bottom rigs and floats 4 and 10 inch Powerbait Worms, Creme pre-rigged worms, Zoom lizards, Zoom Craws, and Powerbait Rib Snakes Livetarget and SPRO Frogs Livetarget mice Storm Arashi squarebills, Livetarget squarebills, Bass Pro Shops squarebills, Chatterbaits, bitsy bugs, A.T. Tackle jigs, 4x4 T-Roy swim jigs, Heddon torpedos, Rebel Pop-rs, Spooks, Lucky Craft Sammys, Livetarget poppers Bass Pro Shops panfish baits and beetle spins Worm hooks and weights and other carolina rig gear Storm swimbaits Spare trebles.split rings Fish grip, pliers, knife, hemos Booyah Pond Magic spinnerbaits, Cavitron buzzbaits Panfish flies Spare line for my panfish rod, medium rod, and froggin' rod So, I was wondering if you guys could suggest some other baits and terminal and stuff to throw in there. I have the opportunity to fish for bass, panfish, catfish, and pickerel every day. I also get the chance to fish for snakehead, trout, stripers, and the occasional smallie/walleye whenever I go up to Maryland. Please don't just say to stock it with only one bait. Thanks!
  19. i have a medium action moderate tip st croix premier cranking rod . is 10 lb test around the correct line i should be using ?keep in mind i am fishing clear water in northeast US what is you cranking set up? let me know please!!
  20. I have recently decided to embark on the Kayak endeavor. I have done some research, and have narrowed my choices down to 2 kayaks, the Ascend FS10 sit-in, and the Ascend FS12T sit-on-top. I am 6' 2'' 240 lbs and will be fishing primarily lakes and ponds. I went to BPS and looked at both kayaks, and they each had pros and cons for what I was wanting. What are your opinions of pros and cons of each? What kind of rigging and customization should I look into doing? What are some of your best functionality tips for yak fishing?
  21. This summer I fished the wacky rig almost exclusivley and had a blast. We caught bass using 5'6" Ike the Dude Combo, 6'6" St Croix Triumph and 7' MH Vendetta. I liked using the smaller rods more so. I want to now purchase a nice rod/reel combo that is light and fun to fish with; reel less than 8.0 OZ. A nice setup to me is around $200-$250 total. I was considering the following three rods; I do like Abu Garcia and Saint Croix products, the reels I have used are Abu Garcia, Pfleuger Priesident(really like) and cheaper Lew's reel which I like but is on the heaver side. Any suggestings for a Wacky Rigging setup would be great. Abu Garcia Veritas Spinning Rod; 6'9", Medium-Light Extra Fast $79.99 St. Croix Mojo 6'8" M-Power Extra Fast $109.99 St. Croix Rage Spinning Rod, RS68MXF $149.99
  22. Hello everyone in the market for a new rod since my st croix mojo bass broke and am going to get a new reel with it as well. So I throw cranks a lot I mean a lot a lot. Around 90% of the fish I have caught were on cranks and other 10 maybe jerks. Now I love cranking but am going to say that I would probably like to explore other techniques as well jig n worm, jerks , and swimjigs. For cranks I throw medium 5-9 ft and some 10+ but only to get to that remaining three feet of water or so to scrape the bottom and most are around 5/8-7/8oz. So for reels im looking at the shimano metanium and the morrum zx reel. I found both on ebay for around 330 bucks. A third consideration would be the lew's team pro speed spool which is ~300 bucks. For rods I have the shimano cumara and the g loomis mag bass rod. The cumara is a crank stick specifically and after reading a few posts and articles most people have said that they find it a waste to go for a straight crank setup. I do agree with that to an extent but I do love me some crank. So for that specific setup I would probably go with the cumara and metanium (some reviews say the morrum is good for cranks some say no). For all around mag bass and metanium/lews. So the morrum is kind of the third wheel reel when considering an all around and specific crank setup. So what do you guys think about the setups? Any have personal or know someone who has used any of these products? Feel free to recommend other gear but I have been looking at these for a while. Which should I go for a straight up crankbait setup or an all around setup and which stuff to grab? thanks or any help you guys can give.
  23. I have been reading forums and watching videos about crankbaits since fall is here. But I still don't understand why you would use light line. Any advice?
  24. I am new to bass fishing and have been doing lots of research. I've watched YouTube videos, read books, and talked to locals about a good way to start catching bass. I've tried most of them yet still am not catching bass. I fish from the bank in water with maybe a foot or 2 of visibility on a good day. I have 2 rods, a 6' medium spinning rod, and a 6'6 medium heavy baitcaster. I want to get 2 lures or rigs and stick with them till I feel I am as close to mastering them as I can. I lack the patience most of the time for senkos so what two should I pick up and stick with? Thanks, Christian
  25. I am a fairly new to bass fishing and am looking for some advice. I love to fish but really only have access to my local lake (Lake Norman, NC) from the bank in public fishing spots. I'm not very tall (about 5'6) and am trying to figure out what rod and reel setup to get. The areas where i fish are not very deep maybe 15ft max and have rocky bottoms. I'm fishing for large mouth and want to get something good all-around. Preferably spinning and less than 100$. Any tips?
