  1. This is your normal Chevy vs Dodge vs Ford. I'm looking for someone who owned multiple different bass boats and will say what they liked and what they didn't like about it. Not looking for the "yep i owned 5 tritons and loved them all".
  2. I have a 1986 ranger 375v love the boat mostly everything still works! But I can’t remember since I’ve had the boat if I ever tested the kill switch lanyard and today while out on the water I pulled it to test it and the motor did not cut off. What could be the cause and where should I start?
  3. I have a 2007 Ranger 170vs. This boat has been good for me, but it lacks in some areas. One in particular is the way the bins lock/close. The bins are rigged with the standard Perko latches, but they aren't compression latches so when it rains all my tackle and equipment gets wet. I am looking into getting new latches that are compression latches to prevent water from getting in the bins. What latches do you recommend?
  4. This is gonna be a lot, but i appreciate any advise/help that is given. Originally on my boat i had a Lowrance HDS 7 Gen 2 touch at the console, and at the front i didn't have anything. Well, Cabelas/BPS recently had a sale on 9" Elite Ti units that came with a Totalscan transducer, and a navionics chip. So i picked one up and took my boat to the shop to get it installed. So i got it back yesterday, and i'm having some issues. I put the new Elite 9 Ti on the bow, and its hooked up to an HDI transducer at the trolling motor. I left the HDS 7 Gen 2 where it was (Console), and got him to put the Totalscan transducer at the back of the boat. The total scan is hooked up directly to the HDS. I also got him to connect both units via NMEA 2000 Network cable. Now to the issues/questions, 1. When i go to sonar, or structure on the HDS it doesn't register the depth and the sonar screen and the structure screen are blank. I went to Settings>Sonar>Installation and tried to set the transducer to Totalscan but Totalscan isn's in the list. I thought this may be due to connection issue with the cable, but then i saw where it was registering the water temp so the transducer is fine and is connected fine. Any ideas here? 2. Is there a way to view Structure Scan from the Totalscan transducer on the Elite Ti? The Totalscan transducer isn't directly connected to the Elite Ti, but that is why i got the network. I thought it would make everything connect. Anybody know if this is possible? 3. Last question, The Elite 9 Ti came with a navionics chip (Navionics US/CAN+). I put it in my HDS because that's where i will be using it mostly. But i saw online last night that you would only need 1 chip for both units. Is this true? If so how do i do this? i tried changing the source on my Elite 9 Ti to Navionics, but it didn't work. (Chip is in HDS) I know this is alot, but i'm kinda lost right now and would love some advise. I paid a good chunk for the depth finder + Install. I would hate to have to spend more. Thanks to all who reply. I really appreciate it!
  5. Want to hear feed back from boat owners that live on the Great Lakes. I live on the St.clair river and a stone throw form Lake St.Clair. Really looking into buying a bass boat and wanted to know the pros and cons of running/boat control on the big water.
  6. Hey guys, I've been fishing out of a kayak for too long and have an opportunity to purchase a 1994 Ranger Sport R70 with a 115hp Mercury Mariner. The boat is owned by my wife's great uncle (who I haven't met yet). He is original owner and supposedly kept it in mint condition (will know more when I go see it). He is "thinking" about selling it, so I don't know how much he wants. If this boat is in great shape, what kind of price should I be looking at? Also, I've heard not to go with a 2 stroke, which I assume the 1994 mercury is. Are there any major problem with 2 strokes I should be concerned with, or even this motor in particular? I really appreciate all the help you guys can give. Kayak fishing frustrates me and would love to get into a real boat
  7. Hi guys. I've been scouring facebook marketplace and craigslist for a good deal on a bass boat and I *may* have found one. Emphasize on the word *may*. A man is selling his, or more accurately, his son's Ranger 375v. I don't know the year. He says his son moved out of state and left the boat. He's honest in that he told me that the carpet needs to be redone and the seats re-upholstered. Personally, anything wrong cosmetically I can deal with. I'm mainly concerned about the hull and the motor. Regarding both, he said the last time he took it on the water was 2 years ago. The hydraulic fluid that helps lower and raise the motor may need to be changed, he mentioned difficulty doing that. I'm sure the batteries are going to have to be replaced. Not sure about the livewell. edit* Fuel was drained after last use and it's been stored under a cover. I'm checking it out this Saturday. Now you may ask, this boat sounds like a lot of work. Yes it does, but he's also selling it for $2300. He says he never uses it, was never his originally, and he's trying to get rid of it. Now of course I'm going to take all this with a grain of salt, but I figure $2300 for a project Ranger boat ain't that bad of a deal. If I can't get a mechanic to come out with me, what should I look for? I know almost nothing about boats. I know I should check the year, check if the transom is made out of wood, check for obvious cracks, and see if the motor turns on. Is there anything else? Really hoping this would be a good deal. Here are some pictures, she certainly needs a cleaning. Hoping for something workable beneath the dust.
  8. Hi All, I have been searching high and low for an answer to where to mount my HDSI transducer to the transom of my Ranger 482V. I have already installed the dual beam thru hull transducer for on pad depth readings but need to mount the HDSI to my transom. My boat has no jack plate. I have a Stern Pad plate that I would like to use if possible to prevent having to drill through my hull. With the stern pad and transducer mounted beside and below the engine mounts the transducer will stick past the lower unit of my motor, therefore, causing the potential for interference on my side imaging signal. I am hoping that someone can advise me on where to put my transducer or can take a picture of where their side imaging transducer is mounted to their transom. Are there any 482/481V owners out there that can send me a pic or tell me where they have had the best results?
  9. Hey everyone, I have a question. I am looking into purchasing a 2005 Ranger Z20 with a 2009 Mercury ProXS 250. The problem is, the z20 model is only rated for a 225hp motor. They guy I'm buying from says that's only because they didn't make the 250 in 2005, and the US Coast Guard will override the max horsepower rating on the boat. Can anyone tell me if this is legit? Thanks, Jed
  10. im trying to snake the transducer wires (sonar and structure) from transom to console.. there is a cord already at the console that im trying to use to pull my wires through. but it gets stuck at the same spot every time no matter how hard i pull or shake the wires. boat is an 88 ranger 390v. should i try and run a fishtape through a different route or keep trying to pull? after 2.5 hours of trying to fish cable through i have got nothing... i did more research and im going to try and remove the seat and maybe look for an access panel in the storage compartment..
  11. how much would you pay for this boat. a 1988 ranger 390v. has been completely restored. no rips or tears. no soft spots in the floor. always covered in garage. hull is in excellent condition new trolling motor. 3 new batteries. atlas jackplate. every thing works like it should. motor runs good. winterized every year and regular maitenance as needed. bunks on trailer were replaced. owner is talking about selling and ive fished out of it many times and he takes good care of it and it runs good.. what would be a fair price. only has a older lowrance with a chart and sonar on it. but i have an hds 9 touch to put on it.. beautiful boat for the age
  12. Looking for any guidance on correcting a delayed throttle response on a 2001 Mercury 125HP. Motor is on a Ranger R71. Motor runs great aside from being a few seconds delayed when pressing down the throttle at the console. (Press down to full throttle...pause pause pause...motor comes to life and launches me into plane). Nothing noticeable in terms of sound from the motor. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
  13. So I know there's the old conversation of fiberglass vs aluminum and I know my question falls right into that. I have been looking at both these boats for a while now and can not decide which to pull the trigger on. I have discovered that a 115hp motor is the best option for me because it is the max horse power for my home lake but it still has enough power for likes like Hartwell and Clarks Hill. Does anyone own or has ever ran either of these boats? Any asvice would be greatly appreciated. This will be my first boat purchase and I am probably over thinking it I know. I want whatever is going to last the longest, be generally simple to maintain, and just be an all around good boat. Thanks.
  14. Hello All Spring of 2017 I plan to purchase a new / slightly used bass boat. I need some help from everyone. Any insight would be very helpful on what you have owned along with any regrets you may have in your purchases. Currently I have a 2000 pro team 175. I 100% will not buy another aluminum boat. I am sick of getting blown all over on a breezy (not windy) day and lack of storage (especially rods) frustrates the hell out of me. This was my first boat and I have learned a lot from it about what I would like to have in a new boat. The biggest lakes I may fish once or twice a year would be Table Rock Lake or Lake of the Ozarks. Budget is between 30K- 40K. Any input on new vs. used, brand, size, engine mfg. and size, storage, electronics, accessories, features, and so on. I would prefer to stay 5 years or less on a used boat if possible. I do also fish several smaller lakes around my area that have an electric only motor requirement or idle only. I have fished a few tournaments over the last couple of years but would like to do more once I have something that can carry more gear and so on. I know this is fairly vague but I am curious to hear what everyone has to say about possible boats on the market today.
  15. Hi guys, I am in the market for my first bass boat and I really need some advice. I have some concerns and deal breakers which I will list first. After that I will cover things I would like to have but are not must haves. So I have a 21'garage and I need to be able to store it in there so the way I see it that limits me to a 17'6" ish boat. I really need to keep the total cost below $22,000 (out the door), and I would like to go new, however I am flexible there if it were just a couple of years old or left over un sold stock. I drive a full size dodge ram so towing won't be a concern, and I am not that worried about gas mileage for the truck or the boat motor. Both of the above boat models max out at 75 HP and I plan on getting the ETEC 75. The biggest difference is the fiber glass vs the aluminum. I will be strictly fishing lakes and I will fish a couple of large (5000+ acre) lakes near lake michigan so wind could be an issue on those lakes. Most lakes will be between 500 and 3000 acres. I'm not planing on fishing too shallow where I would have to worry about hitting things with the boat but you never know. I am ready to take good care of either boat so thats not an issue. I will have the wife and son with me sometimes so ride is important. I also dont want to be rocking back and forth while fishing because because the boat isn't stable. I have read so many forums and it just seems people are so split. I really need advice on buying new, that way we can skip the advice on testing for compression, and wood rot, soft spots, etc.. So I am leaning towards the glass boat (which weighs 1200) with the 75 hp 2 stroke Etec which should make it hit the low 40's. I really love the idea of owning a Ranger boat, but I also love the idea of owning a glass boat. Since I cant do both I have to choose. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  16. I have a 2015 ranger z118 that I ordered from the factory brand new, it has a humminbird 999 at the console and at the bow and they work flawlessly. Cabelas just had a deal on a humminbird 1199 fully loaded that I couldn't pass up. My question is how do I mount both units at the console. I like the idea of them surface mounted side by side but I'm open to suggestions. I'd really like to see pictures of other people's set ups or what they used to mount both on a ranger dash. Any help is appreciated
  17. Hello, I am new to this forum and I could use some help. I recently purchased a 6' Power Pole Pro model off of a friend of mine. The only issue is, I do not have a bracket to mount to my 2005 Ranger 185 VS Jack Plate. I also do not have a hydraulic pump. I am a college angler and am really trying to save some money buying these two things and they are both very expensive. I was able to find one or two things on EBay, but I am wondering if anyone has any other suggestions or one or both of these parts? I am also looking for a manual for this. I have an idea of how to install it but it would be nice to be able to look at a manual for help as well as pictures. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks very much! SCAR College Angler
  18. I've been considering picking up an RT188 and getting back into fishing after about a 10 year hiatus. I'm planning to wait for a 2016 model as I'd like to keep saving and pay cash if possible and I heard the Ranger boat show or something is next month, so we'll see. My question is about the outboard motor choices since you can equip with several. Maybe I haven't done enough research but the Evinrude 115DGL was seemingly a good choice and I came across some favorable reviews. I know every brand has their problems here and there but when I reached out to a dealer they told me they wouldn't order with an Evinrude. I kept pushing and they relented and said they could one-off order it but that they would never stock one that way. Said they are a Yamaha/Mercury/Suzuki dealer and Evinrude "isn't what it used to be". So, what are your thoughts here? I'm sure they have their reasons whatever it may be (troubles with product or better incentives to sell others, who knows), but I can't tell, so I'd like a second opinion so to speak. Ranger seems fond of the Evinrude outboards. Should I be concerned? Thanks in advance!
  19. Hello! I just purchased a 93 Ranger 397v fish and ski. It still has the original trolling motor, and i'd like to install the brand new 12v minn kota I bought for my old boat. The current trolling motor has a 12v/24v switch on it, and has a 4 prong plug that plugs into a bow mounted receptacle. The replacement is only 12v. I'd like to wire the new trolling motor to the ranger plug in. Boat has 2 12v deep cycle, and a separate 12v for starting. I know i could wire them parallel to put out 12v, but can I still use the plug with this setup? and is this the best way to install it? Thanks!!!
  20. Hi, I have bought a 2010 Ranger 520 (new to me!) and took it out for the first time today. I have a Yamaha Vmax 250 2nd series on it. I let it warm up for about 2-3 minutes and then tried to take off. When I tried to take off the engine kept going dead as if it had a safety switch on it or something. It would idle just fine, but would go dead when I gave it gas. After going dead about 10 times, it finally stayed running and there was no problems at all. I turned it off several times after that and acted appropriately when accelerating from idle. In fact, the thing ran really, really good once I got going. Does anyone know what the initial engine turning off was all about? Was it not warmed up enough? Maybe had the trim set wrong? I'm not sure what it was, but it scared the heck out of me. I'm glad it cranked and ran well afterwards.
  21. 2011 Ranger Z118 with Mercury 150 Optimax, 8 " jackplate, 23p Tempest plus. If anyone has this setup or can help me out, please reply. I am trying to figure out the best height to move my motor to to get the fastest speed possible. I know this is not a rocket but I want the most that I can get without burning the motor up. What top speed, rpm, water pressure should I be looking for. So far I can not get it to turn the motor over 5450 rpm.
