  1. Hi all, Just curious if anyone has experience using this rod? I have the 795 and want something shorter for fishing in tight quarters on a kayak. I’m looking for a pitching rod, not flipping, but something heavy enough to fish deep in the tulllies and other grass/matts. I know this rod will get the job done but worried it has no tip for lighter presentations. If the 735 is too much of a broom stick maybe I should go for the 765. But then what really is the difference between my 795 and 765. Any opinions?
  2. Looking to get a new flipping stick at most 7'7 and tied between these 2. Leaning towards mojo because my Dads seems pretty decent and it has a good warranty and seems like a good rod overall. But then there's the endurance, which has no warranty but seems very light and nice from what I've read. I also am curious if the mojos 7'6 model is a good flipping stick or if the 7'4 would be better. Any insight would be nice or a tie breaker, thx and have a nice day.
  3. I'm looking for a new crankbait rod that's between 7'10" to 8' in length. Something I would throw 6XD's mostly on, maybe an 8XD. Only rod I found in that category was the Powell Endurance rods but never had a Powell rod so unsure if they're good or not.
  4. I fish mostly Powell rods, and I love 'em. That said, I've always tried to stay roughly in the middle of the ratings stated on the rod for line and weight. Is it terrible to throw a 1 oz. lure on a rod that's rated 1/4 oz. to 1 oz., thus maxing it out? Do I run the risk of breaking the rod if I'm trying to wing it out there? I have a rod I feel would be perfect for the 110 plopper, but the max rating is 1 oz. Do I need to be conservative on my casts? Or just chuck and wind? Sorry if this question has been answered already, and thanks for any input!
  5. I have a 7'1, 1 power spinning powell rod i plan on using for ned rigs, dropshots, and occasionally trout. I Need a reel, and don't want to break the bank. What should i buy for it, in a size small enough for this light setup?
  6. Hello all! I have some rods and reels I use and was wondering how you would pair them to make a combo for maximum effectiveness. I know this will require a long answer so I will number the reels and use letters for the rods so you can use those instead of the model numbers. A. Shimano Antares DC 7:1 B. Lews BB-1 7:1 C. Alderbaren 7:1 D. Quantum Smoke Spin 2500 type E. Shimano 2500 Spin CI4 F. *** 7:1 G. Metanium D.C. 7:1 Rods 1. Dobyn's 701 Spinning 2. Dobyn's 734CH 3. Dobyns 735CH 4. Powell Max 3D 753 5. Shimano Crucial 6'6" 6. G Loomis 6'6" jw.. What reel goes best w each rod in your opinion? Make a single combo like E1 or do all or none I'm trying to tweek my tools here. Line etc is also sweet. Thanks in advance.
  7. I'm looking to pick up an all around casting rod for the days I just want to take one rod with me. I have been looking at both the Powell Max 3D 723 and Dobyns Fury 733, my plan was to use it for traps, flukes/senkos, spinnerbaits, jigs, and paddletails (mainly 3.8" Fat Impacts weightless/chikubi rig). Which of these two rods would you guys recommend and also the reason for one over the other.
  8. Powell Max 3D Review I purchased this rod at my local tackle shop for 160$, feels like I payed 200$ plus.. This rod is lighter than my crucials, carbonlites, st. croix mojo bass, and many more, same for sensitivity... this is by far my most sensitive rod, you feel everything, every bump of the bottom, and the smallest bites. Quick tip, a way to test the sensitivity of your rod is to tie your lure on, let some line out and close your eyes, have someone tap the line, and see if you can feel it. I can feel the slightest taps when I do this. I have the 6'8 Med Heavy, extra fast tip version, and I can throw virtually anything on it, swimbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, Texas rigs and a bunch more. Don't worry about the extra fast tip, it can do anything your typical fast tip can do, if not better. It has 10 Fuji guides that are smaller than most guides but not near as small as micro guides. It loads up great, has great hooksetting power, has a great tip and is brutally tough. It is rated for 1/4-3/4 but I have thrown 1oz lures fine on it. I have this paired with the Shimano Curado I and its a beast, extremely light and well balanced. I am in love with this rod and would recommend it to anyone who wants a rod that excels at everything... If you have any questions please ask I'll be happy to answer them, Thanks Bassinick

  10. I'm looking at Powell's Max 3D line, specifically the 723 casting rod, and I'm wondering how the power of Powell compares to another manufacturer like St. Croix per se.. St. Croix Mojo bass has a 7'1 M/F that has line weight of 10-17 lb and lure weight of 1/4-5/8 oz. Powell Max 3D has a MH/EF rod has a line weight of 8-17 lb and lure weight of 3/16-3/4 oz. St. Croix is generally accepted as being rated as 1/2 power heavier than listed correct? Now I ask, is Powell's power slightly over rated? Also, does a lighter minimum lure weight with the EF Powell mean that it will load/flex easier on a cast than the fast action Croix? Basically, will the MH/EF load easier on a cast with a weightless senko than the M/F St. Croix? So comparing the 7'1 M/F St. Croix MOJO Bass and the 7'2 MH/EF Powell Max 3D have about the same power and softness in tip action?
  11. I was all set to buy a Dobyns Savvy rod on TW's Labor Day sale. Just before, I had a buddy tell me Powell rods are better quality. Now I'm stumped. I just happened upon another post recently with quite a few complaint's about Dobyns finish quality. I'm looking for any suggestions between these two rods, or any others you might recommend over these two. Other considerations are micro guides vs. regular, heavy vs. mag heavy. This will also serve as a flippin' and pitchin' rod for me here in Utah, but mostly frogs. I've been throwing and having success on booyah pad crashers, live target frogs, and the jackall iobee frog, just so you have an idea what I'll be using it for mostly. I'm 5'10", and I'll be fishing from a boat and from shore, so I don't know if a 7'3" would be a bit long? Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. I'm new to this site, and so far I'm very impressed! I'm also a little sad it took me so long to find! One other side note, I've been using a 7' MH Fenwick Silverhawk, mod. fast action for frogging. I know whatever I get should be quite an improvement. I'm also using a Lew's Laser Pro reel in a 7.1:1. Thanks in advance for any help!
  12. Okay I am looking at a Powell Max 765SBR MH-F (not the new 3D, the old one) and I was wondering how it would do on the following techniques: Hollow body frogs and toads, flipping, pitching, punching, and paddletails up to 5" with 3/8 oz weighted swimbait hooks
  13. Hello all, my name is Joey, I work in the world of political talk radio and the show I produce for can be heard daily from 5-9AM Pacific time here: http://www.kogo.com/main.html I grew up originally fishing in Ohio, spent a short time in Florida and ended up in San Diego. I've been using this forum for many years as great source for fishing style and gear tips and am happy to join. Living by the ocean I do ton of saltwater fishing to go along with black bass and have even had the opportunity to catch both freshwater and saltwater bass in the same day. I fish the little known San Diego River more than any other body of water as it's a hidden gem for big bass. Only downside is that in a big city like this many meth heads and homeless make the riverbed their home so I have to keep my head on a swivel while reeling in a 5 pounder. But again I'm happy to join and look forward to participating in many conversations like on which is a better longterm reel to own, a new Curado I or a Lew's Tournament Pro....My nod goes to the Curado.
  14. I am getting a new rod soon and have been eyeing the Powell Endurance 714-CEF or Dobyns Champion 703C. This is only my third or fourth year doing serious bass fishing and this will be my first "nicer" setup as I currently own two BPS sticks which were <$100. I plan to put a lot of time on the water this season (in a yak) and really learn to fish and study structure. The Powell is about $50 less than the Dobyns. Unless I can get the Endurance cheaper, I wouldn't mind spending another $50 for a Dobyns. What would you do in my shoes?
  15. Hey everybody. Just wanted to hear some feedback on the Frog rod from Powell. I like that the reviews I've read say it's a good jig/flipping/pitching rod as well, but wanted to get some of you guy's opinions of the rod if you've used it. Also, if by chance someone has used both the Powell and Tatula Frog rod, I'd love to hear some comparisons. I know that's a long shot, though, because the Tats are so new.
  16. Getting a new jig rod. Either getting a dobyns champion 735 or a powell endurance 723 Ex fast tip. Which one would be better for football jogs and arkie heads in 1-30 feet of water? Also, if i get the champ i will get a 150$ reel if i get the endurance i will get around a 200$ reel. So which set up? thanks
  17. Does anyone have one of these? I am not too familiar with Powell Rods but I hear good things about them. I saw this new rod line and am considering purchasing one. Are they good rods?
  18. Alright, so I am looking for a crankbait rod. That could basically work the whole spectrum of cranks. Though i'm looking for something that is good with medium and deep divers around (15-20ft.) I am not spending a lot on a glass rod at the moment, so my two choices are between a rod at regular price and one that is on sell. Both are crankbait rods -Powell Diesel 7' med hvy -Daiwa Ballistic 7'2" med hvy Which one would you choose. I was going to get the powell until i saw the good deal on the Ballistic. So give me your opinions! Thanks, Zach
  19. I've narrowed it down to these 4 rods for my next spinnerbait only rod. Help me choose please Dobyns savvy micro guide Powell endurance Powell max Shimano crucial
