  1. The Potomac River is still chilly with temperatures stable in the lower to mid 40’s. However, this doesn’t take in to account the multiple water discharges where water temperatures this time of year rarely fall below the ’50s. Those of you familiar with the Potomac know that it doesn’t take much of a warm front in early spring to really start heating things up all over the river. The Potomac is a beast and it can test your mental toughness more than any other fishery I'm familiar with. However, it is also my favorite fishery, toe-to-toe with Lake Marion in S.C., because it offers some of the most intense brief periods of action I’ve ever experienced. This being said after 10 years of heavy bass fishing (I’m only 22). I used to hate the Potomac with a passion. I fished Junior State Qualifiers out of Aquia creek from when I first started tournament fishing. I stunk it up just about every time. I tried to fish the river my way, instead of listening to the river and ultimately the fish that call the Potomac home. So, this is where I’d like to give my first pointer to anybody trying to figure the Potomac out for the first time. You have to understand the TIDE. As with any tidal fishery, the fish relate to the tides more than almost anything in the river. Of course, bait, vegetation, and structure all have a weighted say in the position of fish, but on the Potomac, there is no shortage of forage in just about every creek, pocket, ditch, marina…etc. A few general pointers for Potomac tide IMO 1. The best tide is outgoing tide for just about every creek. 2. Feeding windows are tight and determined by the tide 3. Read tidal charts, understand when your best opportunities are 4. Don’t get discouraged. If Bob says they’re biting one creek up, your creek is probably about to start popping off once the tidal conditions become simultaneous with the creek Bob’s in. 5. Expect lull’s especially during slack tide 6. Use Low tide to your advantage to spot areas that you couldn’t see during high tide 7. Also use the low tide to pick apart obvious cover methodically, as fish will often hold tighter to cover in low tide. 8. High Tide can be tricky. But I almost always just cover as much water as possible during high tide Tides can be funny, and these are in no way full-proof pointers, instead, they are guidelines I use every time I fish the Potomac. Tides can be fun, just as much as they suck. A buddy and I one time caught close to 60 fish in two, one hour periods, during a tournament in June 2017 because we used the tides to our advantage. When it's on its on. The next big one is Grass. Love it or hate it, the Potomac has grass everywhere, some areas are just grassy(er) than others. I won't get too scientific, instead, just go over some baits and approaches to fishing the grassy spots of the Potomac. 1. Lipless/ Rat-L-Trap - One of the best Potomac pre-spawn baits. Any color will work as long as it RED. Just rip it through the grass. (IMO) 2. Chatter Bait - Better on grass edges and early grass that isn’t very dense yet 3.Swim Jig 4. Weightless Fluke 5. Any type of weedless swim-bait can produce well (what our 60 fish were caught on) 6. Some type of craw to pitch through pockets of grass. 7. TopWater! I'm a frog addict and they’ll hit topwater in the back of creeks when the waters in the 50’s on the Potomac. Sometimes, as much as you think you know the Potomac you just don’t. Eventually, you’ll have one these days on the river. You’ve tried just about everything and followed the tidal charts. You got yourself in a good position to take advantage of feeding river fish, yet it doesn’t pan out. That’s when I run like crazy around the river… just kidding…not really. JUNK-FISHING! Honestly, sometimes you gotta just go junk fish. Sometimes you have to run around and fish the rocks at Leeslyvania state park. (sorry if I gave away anybody's favorite spot). But in all seriousness, the Potomac is littered with various man-made structures and marinas that you can junk fish your way to a limit. My biggest bass out of the Potomac was an 8lber caught junk fishing in early April North of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. We junk fished our way into my most unforgettable day of fishing because what we thought we knew didn’t pan out. 1. Marinas are everywhere on the Potomac and they hold plenty of fish. Lots of Snakeheads as well, if you’re into that kind of thing. 2. The areas around the Woodrow Wilson have a high concentration of man-made structures. 3. Some of these areas, above the Woodrow Wilson, are community holes, but even the unsuspecting areas in this section of river hold beast. 4. Bridges. There are tons of bridges and you can use outgoing and incoming tides to your advantage with bridges by positioning your boat the right way. 5. Docks. There isn’t a ton but there are stretches of docks that produce fish in all conditions. In addition to all the other pointers, one of the most important tips I can give is to use your mapping charts wisely to navigate safely, find depressions, and abnormalities in your favorite creek. The Potomac can look the same in every creek, so find the abnormalities and ditches the fish use as highways. Also, the Potomac can become inches of water deep just about anywhere at any given time. People get stuck on mud flats and sand bars all the time! Until the tide rises them from stuck, to floating, after a few hours. I hope this helped anybody who is looking to get out on the Potomac or at least made an interesting (or laughable) read for those Potomac lovers like me. This is just some information I wish I had when I first fished the beast of a river the Potomac seems like at first. Whatever you do, don’t let the Potomac discourage or scare you, it is simply just another puzzle in the bass fishing world that is highly rewarding when you figure it out…or think you’ve figured it out. Mix it up on the Potomac once you get comfortable, the tried and true lures work, but sometimes, the Potomac can be an awesome big swim bait fishery (hint hint). I hope whoever reads this gets a chance to tear the river up this year. I am currently in my Junior year at VT after transferring this fall, so I'll only be able to get up there a few times during prime-time. I can't complain too much because I’m on the fishing team here and it opened up the door for me to experience plenty of new bodies of water and bodies of water I only sparingly fished beforehand. Good Luck, and let me know any Potomac juice you’re willing to share below.
  2. Hello -- Can anyone recommend a good place to catch snakeheads in the Potomac or Maryland. My young sons who love fishing want to catch one -- it's our summer goal! We don't need big fish -- just want to land one. Many thanks.
  3. Hello, Thinking about heading to the Potomac to frog and/ or flip and punch grass and pads in the next few days. I want to throw some frogs so I'd like to be on the water before sunlight. I was planning on going to Aquia Creek, and was wondering if there are nearby places to launch a kayak at 5 AM... Also, if anyone has any tips on whats been going on in that area lately it would be appreciated! -- Thanks
  4. Went out Sunday to check on the migration of the Crappie in the Potomac. Currently, they are in the creek channels and canal channels. In the process of searching with 2 inch tubes on 1/16 oz jigheads we caught Bluegill, Catfish, Ring Perch Bass and of course a fair amount of Crappie. Key was to find them on electronics and drop the jig down to them. They should be pulling up under cover with the upcoming cold weather in the forecast.
  5. Hey All, I moved from northern CA to the DMV about a year and a half ago. I've fished for years all over northern california, but have yet to fish on the east coast. I've got a good all-purpose smallmouth pole (the rest of my poles will be coming this summer), and I'm looking to get into some good fishing. I do not have a boat, canoe, float tube, pontoon, or any type of fishing / floating device. So I'm limited to shore fishing and/or boat/kayak rentals. I'd love any tips on spots to get into later this spring. I'd appreciate any and all responses! Thank you!!
  6. Hit the river last night out of Occoquan on my buddy's boat, just to see if the pros left us anything. It was a pretty decent night, we caught 12 or 13 bass in total largest being around 4, another 3+ and the rest smaller. Senkos, jigs, and spinnerbaits. It got a kinda wild as the storm was rolling in. We were on a main river spot and catfish were going nuts. In my time on the river I don't think I've seen as an aggressive cat bite as this. It was like the were schooled up in shallow water. You would stick one and several others would boil around that fish after the hook set. I was getting cat bit on every cast. Tried to weed through because we had a few decent bass bites, but the cats were overpowering. We saw the weather coming for us so we ran back to the Occoquan. Didn't make it in time, because we foolishly stopped to fish a grass mat before we came in, my buddy caught a 2.5lber but we paid for it. Caught in the storm under the Rt.1 bridge. A small lull in the front gave us an opportunity to upgrade to under the 95 bridge where we waited the storm out for about 1.5 hours. Cranked the radio and made the best of it. Fun night. AP
  7. Hey Everyone, Ill be headed to the Potomac River in early June this summer. Being from Ohio, I have no experience or knowledge of the area and will only have 3 days to fish. I know that mattawoman has good fishing but also a lot of pressure. That being said, Aquia creek looks good on maps but I was wondering if anyone could offer any tips on the area. I love fishing shallow vegetation and docks which seem to be abundant there. Thanks!!
  8. This just happened right down river from the boat launch that I use. What a tragedy. Current reports estimate that 7500-9000 gallons of jet fuel were spilled into the Potomac river just south of National (Reagan) Airport. Only time will tell what effect this will have on the fishery and environment in general. It can't be good, though. It's a sad day for Washington, DC. The river is tidal in this stretch, so the water goes both ways. Last night when I was pulling my boat out at the ramp I could smell gas. Had no idea what it was at the time, but now it all makes sense. I just hope that if this was due to negligence that the responsible parties will be held liable in some way. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/trafficandcommuting/fuel-spills-into-potomac-river-at-area-south-of-reagan-national-airport/2015/10/30/e5180c96-7f12-11e5-afce-2afd1d3eb896_story.html Does anybody have experience with this type of spill in the waters they fish? What was the consequence?
  9. Please send me a PM if you own a bass boat and are interested in joining a bass club that fishes primarily on the Potomac (launch site is usually Pohick Bay). Can give more details and answer any questions for those interested!

    small mouth

A nice smallmouth from the bank of the Potomac River at Great Falls Park, Virginia.
  11. I retired last year and started up bass fishing after many years not. I kept hearing on this forum and others about senko or finesse worms. Last month I finally gave them a try, and boy do they work. I don't understand what the bass see in them. This morning on the Potomac I used 6" finesse worms from Gander Mountain, blue with silver flecks, weightless. Caught four nice 2-pound bass in a couple of hours. The same worms worked in Minnesota on a trip last month, and in a local northern Virginia lake. I'm convinced!
  12. I just saw this on WTOP.com: Caleb Newton, who lives in Spotsylvania County, Va., holds Monday June 3, 2013, the 17 pound 6 ounce northern snakehead fish that he caught in Aquia Creek in Virginia. He has filed paperwork with the International Game Fish Association to have the fish registered as a world-record catch. 13. Gang Whats going on? I have to admit that I'm quite addicted to this site since joining a short while ago. Not sure How Im able to get all my work done because I think Im on here most of my working day!!! I currently live in Springfield/Burke area of Va. Just getting back into the sport of Bass Fishing. It was a big hobby of mine as a teenager. I subscribed to about 2-3 B.A.S.S. magazines, even tried my hand at making my own lures. I fished Burke Lake, Occoquan and Potomac, but all form shore. But after College, I picked up DJing and havent fished as much. I'm familiar with alot of techniques, and with fish themselves. (Studied Marine Biology in school but changed my major senior year to Biology) because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. So I do have a good deal of Bass fishing knowledge but havent been able to apply it much these last 10 years. I thought this would be a great resource to get my feet wet again, pick up tips, hopefully make a few new fishing buddies and enjoy some time out on the water. If anyone ever needs a partner, and is local, would luv the chance to fish with you sometime. Fish On!! --Chris
  14. The middle Potomac river is loosing a fishing site on Monday Oct 1st. The warm water discharge will be no more. http://www.wtop.com/134/3060188/Alexandria-power-plant-to-be-close-for-good-Monday

  16. Im new to the potomac river, so I'm trying to learn it the best I can. However, I dont have a bass boat, and a kayak has proven to be quite difficult to work from in the potomac chop. So, if anyone with a boat in the woodbridge area is looking to cut their fuel/launch fees in half, please let me know. Im available both days this weekend, and most weekends this summer. thanks, Ben
  17. This article came across my daily read today and I thought that since it covers both the NE and SE forums I would post it here for general interest. Win prizes for catching Snakeheads Sunday - 4/1/2012, 10:40am ET [WTOP.COM] The Northern Snakehead is a non-native, invasive species, according to [MD] DNR. (Courtesy of KYschools.us) WASHINGTON - If the delicious meat and dangerous souvenirs weren't enough incentive to catch Snakehead fish, how about up to $200 in prizes? The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is offering prizes to anglers who can land the destructive, invasive species that has many experts worried. This follows a two-day tournament the [MD] DNR hosted last September aimed at stopping the species from expanding beyond its already surprising reach. "We do not want Snakeheads in our waters," said DNR Inland Fisheries Director Don Cosden. "This initiative is a way to remind anglers that it is important to catch and remove this invasive species of fish." [good luck with that] Here are the prizes being offered: $200 gift card from Bass Pro Shops A Maryland State Passport which provides unlimited day-use entry for up to 10 passengers in a vehicle, unlimited boat launching at State Park facilities and a 10 percent discount on state-operated concessions and boat rentals [cost 75.00] Potomac River Fisheries Commission fishing license [??? maybe this is for 2013] Winners must have caught the fish from the Chesapeake Bay's watershed. [ which covers MD, VA, DC, PA, WV, DL] Three winners will be randomly be drawn on Nov. 30, 2012. It's unclear how the species first entered the area, though it's believed Snakeheads were first introduced to a pond in Crofton, Md. The fish are able to breathe air and crawl across land for short distances, and are now rife in the Potomac River. [in the beginning] Scientists believed the freshwater species would not be able to survive any water more salty than brackish tributaries like the Potomac, though some were sighted in other parts of the region, like Annapolis [MD]. They would only have been able to access these areas by swimming through salt water. Learn more about registering for the contest at the DNR website. http://www.dnr.state.md.us/ Ref: WTOP News at http://www.wtop.com/...=46&sid=2808491
  18. Anyone been out on the Middle Potomac (Chain Bridge to RT. 301 Bridge) lately and can recall the water temp? Same question for any of the creeks Cheers, Eric
  19. I live in Waldorf, MD and can't hook up with fellow retirees who enjoy bass fishing; so, why not start our own club? It would be open to all retirees and their spouses, single men, and single women; you just need to be retired, or retired while working part time. Nice part of this is we can fish during the week while everyone else is at work. This would be a social club as well - not just meeting at the ramp before or after a tournament; we would do other activities that would help bond friendships both on and off the water. For now, meetings could be held at my house which is near the center of Waldorf. Charter members get to pick the club name and set the rules. What do you think, your reply is welcome. Cheers
  20. Hi folks, I was Googling for a route through this treacherous stretch of the Potomac, but I came up short. I didn't create the following route on the water, but rather with some free mapping software. It represents roughly the way I usually run Blue Plains and Oxen Creek, but it has routes I haven't tried for Fox Ferry and the WW Bridge. Please give any input you have. The best information would be actual waypoints from your GPS/plotter, but any/all feedback would be appreciated. Route/Waypoints in CSV format. Free mapping software. NOAA Chart Downloads (for the free MD base map, scroll down to "ENCs by State," and click "MD." Thanks, Jamie
