  1. Hey BR, I'm trying to get into stripper fishing (from shore) and I was wondering if I have the right gear. I'm thinking of using a Med/Hvy 7'6 Rod rated for lures up to 3oz, paired with a 5000 size spinning reel with 40lb braid to a 50lb mono leader for bigger jerkbaits, poppers and probably spoons. I'm also going to use a 7'6 Med/Hvy Rod rated for lures up to 1oz, paired with a 4000 size reel with 20lb braid to 30lb mono for jerkbaits. Would these combos work for what I am going to be using them for? Is a braid to leader know or swivel better? Any tips for fishing from a jetty? Any lure recommendations? Any help is greatly appreciated, Martin Sierra
  2. My son has the fishing bug and enjoys fishing anywhere he can here in San Diego. Most recently, he has started fishing around the San Diego Mission Bay - shore fishing, using his regular 6' pole and cheap Shakespeare reel with 10 lb test. He's caught a couple bass, maybe 18 inches or so. He is saving for a Kayak, but he's never fished from one. He wants an "ocean" rod/reel for his birthday and I'm a bit overwhelmed by the selection and my sad, sad lack of knowledge. Looking to keep this budget conscious (is it possible to stay around a hundred bucks for a pole and reel??) My dad suggest a 7-8' pole and a Mitchell 300 reel. Specifics: 11 year old, 5'3" and a big kid. Main use: shore fishing around the Mission Bay area of San Diego Type of fish: really anything that he can hook Other uses: kayak ocean fishing, pier fishing Your input would be truly appreciated!!
  3. I am looking for a hybrid that will fish well in salt and freshwater. I fish out of a kayak and have used freshwater reels and as long as I wash them off every time and service them 2-3 times a year I am ok but wonder if the saltwater reels will hold up better. I do inshore fishing here on the west coast for calico bass and yellowtail. Actually a shimano reel repairman suggested that I use spinning gear for my ocean fishing in that the saltwater does not enter the gears as easily. So for the heavier fishing I have been doing that. What I want is bass reels that I can fish in fresh and salt. Any recommendations?
