  1. A local pond by me that's about an acre in a square shape has almost no bass bigger than really 6 inches. There's just about every species of bait fish (bluegill and rock bass in large numbers and perch and crappie in much smaller numbers) and carp that jump all over the pond, most likely all coming from the river very close by. The bottom is rocky with some weed patches and structure and seems to get semi deep although I can't really tell. The problem here is when fishing (most often fly fishing around the shore), there are tiny to medium bluegill, small to big rock bass, and the bass (3:1 smallmouth:largemouth) are all around 6 inches and just as big as the bait fish. It seems like the masses of bait fish that hide in the weeds around the shore should be amazing bait for big bass but as far as I know there's only been one 2 pound smallie my friend caught right as a rooster tail hit the surface. It just seems so confusing to me. Are there way too many bait fish and rock bass that compete with the little bass keeping them small (they almost always have fat stomachs even being so small) and how would one fix that? Thank you for your help.
  2. I will be staying in Altmar NY this weekend for three days. I have two inflatable canoes I was looking for a body of water that won't be overwhelming as far as size goes. My inflatables are not great for moving around but are fine on small lakes and ponds. I see the Salmon river reservoir, sandy ponds (north and south), cranberrry pond, etc. Most of these look bigger than I like but if anybody knows the fishing is good I'd try it. Or any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. I live in buffalo ny so I am not familiar with the area. This also means i won't be able to hog anybodies secret spots! Thanks in advance for any help!
  3. I'm going to be fishing Lake George middle-late June this year. Any tips? Last year the water was about 65 degrees at that time. I did manage to pull out an 8 Pound Largemouth from about 10 ft deep of water. Trying to get another nice one this year, haha.
  4. I fish Long Island, NY, and wanted to know what are some must have baits for this time of year?
  5. Hi, Allow me to introduce myself. I am an Army transplant stationed at Fort Drum. I grew up in Kansas. Kansas has a total of about 5 lakes. It was a 2-3 hour drive to get to any one of them. They were all state parks which meant that you could just go there, walk to the shore and start fishing. Also, there were no trees (it was Kansas) so the entire lake was more or less available on foot. Since moving to upstate, I have made several efforts to get out to a lake and do some shore fishing. I have been to Lakes Bonaparte, Black Lake, Indian Lake (this one was ... interesting to get to) Black River Bay, and a few other places and what I run into is that any available shoreline is taken up by residential or is not walkable due to trees etc. I am resisting buying a boat because I move every two or so years and I (my wife) think it would be a pain to move it across the country every few years. I have scoured the internet to find a post or two about shore/bank fishing and have found very little. People don't want to broadcast to the entire internet where the good spots are. This is understandable, but maybe someone could give me a tip on how better to find some fishable bankline.
  6. just wonderin if there is any Long Island bass fisherman on here... feel free to reply :]
  7. Has anybody had any luck finding smallmouths on the big lake near Rochester. Seems to be dead zone these days. Ship builders? Hedges? near Irondequoit?
