  1. *TL;DR at the bottom* Hey everyone Long story short I have a smallmouth river I camped at just a few days ago. Good smallmouth, and there are also lots of muskie in there. I want to catch one. I’ve got a few spots where I know there’s at least 4 muskie, and some big ones too. I will be wading with two others. I think I might be the only one who’s actually gonna target muskie in those spots that we know are muskie territory. They will be available to help out with landing the fish, since we do NOT have a net. I know this complicates things. We should be able to land the muskie using fish grippers right? One person grabs him with the grippers, then the one who caught the muskie will use pliers to unhook him. Then the angler grabs him the “right” way and lifts him up for the third person to take pictures. Then release. Does this sound best? The fish will be sitting in the water almost the whole time. Hopefully the muskie are nice and tired out and don’t give me too much trouble during this. Alternatively I could drag the fish onto a muddy/sandy bank but that doesn’t really sound good to me. We’re trying to minimize our chances of getting injured, especially since my older brother got his finger cut decently bad by a smaller one he caught by accident who wouldn’t stop thrashing when we were there the other day. And we’re 2 hours from the closest hospital so getting injured would be a bad idea. Also I’ll buy some 11 inch pliers to use. Should gloves be used? How exactly do you hold a muskie? I am 99% sure I know how to hold it, but 60% confident in my ability to do it correctly. Then there’s the gear question. I’m planning on dropping like 60 bucks at BPS to get some muskie baits and a leader. I’ll put those on my 7’2 heavy frog rod, which has 80 pound braid on it. Two questions here: what lures? I’m thinking I’ll just get two brown or orange spinners to look like a smallmouth. And what kind of leader? I’ve heard of using steel leaders or just super heavy fluorocarbon. Another thing I thought of: I’m worried about getting all the line peeled off my reel. It’s 80 pound braid, and since it’s so thick, there’s not a ton of it on there. (My reel is a regular SLX) I think I’ll need to chase the fish if it’s big? Anything else I need to know about fighting them? As far as holding them for pictures, I’m planning on just the regular you see online, holding them horizontally by the belly and the chin. Then also a cool angle holding it by the tail and the belly right above the water with his head pointing towards the camera so you can see the teeth. That angle will look especially cool since I’m standing in the water with it. Any other tips about staying safe, or just in general about muskie fishing? Sorry this post is so long, I’ll add a TL;DR at the bottom. I think I know the answers to most of these questions, but I want to make sure I’m doing this right and staying safe, and hopefully you agree it’s a good decision to check myself here. TL;DR: I don’t know s*** about muskie fishing and want to catch them in a river.
  2. Hey guys, I usually fish for bass in southeast Wisconsin but 1 week a year my family takes a trip up north to Eagle River, WI. The Eagle River chain is known for excellent Muskie fishing, so I figure I might as well take advantage and try my hand at it during the time I'm up there. Main problem is - I can't afford/justify purchasing a Muskie setup for 1 week out of the year. For bass fishing I currently have a spinning setup and multi-purpose Medium baitcasting setup. The next setup I've been looking to purchase is a heavy setup for frogs, jigs, etc. Looking for rod/reel recommendations for this, and ideally something that would at least suffice to throw some larger Muskie lures during the week I'm up north. My thought is to spool it with 50lb braid and will add a wire leader when using it for Muskie, but feel free to suggest something else. I know most of you are going to want me to have a separate setup for Muskie, froggin, pitching/flipping - but for now I need something that can get all of the jobs done on a reasonable budget. Hopefully I have 20+ setups and a $30k bass boat one day, but for now I've gotta work with my 2-3 bass setups and 14 foot jon boat I absolutely HAVE to keep the combo under $150, bonus points for staying under $120. I hate to even mention it on this forum lol, but any opinions on Whuppin Sticks for this? I could be wrong in this, but I feel like for a heavy setup it makes more sense to compromise the rod to afford a better reel if you have to compromise one or the other. Finesse fishing I would think the opposite since you want a good rod with good sensitivity and feel, but for this setup, as far as I know I just need something rock solid with good backbone and can spend a little more on a better reel. Thanks for the help!
  3. I will be going up to lake noquebay in WI a very small lake and I can not find any updated fishing reports on the lake . has anyone been up that way to tell me what species is present?

  5. I fish a small lake with fairly clear water and a LOT of 20-30" muskies. Because of the water clarity, what do you guys think is the lightest leader I can get away with. I have caught a few on 20lb fluorocarbon, but I don't want to risk being cut off. Also, I want to go a little bit lighter because there are also some nice smallies, largemouth and walleyes there. It seems that if I am using a fluorocarbon leader, I will catch quite a few of them, but as soon as I switch to wire, they won't hit. I will be mainly using crankbaits and 1oz lipless baits, but might get into some topwater action as well. Thanks
  6. Lets talk muskies how do I catch them were and when what's a good starter fishing pole and bait.....
  7. I fish alone so a net would not be the easiest thing to use. I am considering a Boga Grip. Any other solutions (landing by hand) would alo be welcome. I have lost quite a few fish because i always seem to hook a muskie when i dont have a leader on and they chew through the braid in no time, so if i dont land them quickly they are gone. Also, i fish from a dock that is about 2 feet of the water. Thanks a bunch
  8. Hey guys, I've been seriously thinking about trying out Muskie fishing over the last couple months, but have been waiting to figure out what kind of gear to get. Cabela's recently had their Tourney Trail casting reels on sale for $32.99, so I ordered a heavy rod since it was such a good deal. Here are the rod specs: Length: 7'6" Power: Heavy Action: Fast Lure Weight: 1-3 oz Lb Test: 17-40 Now, Ive been looking into several options for a reel. I'm wanting a reel that I can use for musky, but I would also like to use it for something like Striper fishing or pier fishing at the beach (If that is possible with this setup). I'm looking for a reel in the $100 price range, so I've mostly been looking at the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur C4 6600, but I have also looked at the Shimano Cardiff 400A or the Shimano Corvalus. Given my intetions for musky/ occasional saltwater fishing, which reel would you guys recommend me look into getting? Thanks! Dillon
