  1. I am new to salt water fishing, and recently bought a Battle II 3000 and Daiwa BG 4500 to do some fishing in inlets and salt water rivers, as well as try out some surf casting. I do realize some bigger reels would've been better for big fish surf casting. I am fishing Cape Cod in the Bass River area. I am wondering two things. I have seen and read a lot about backing your reels with Mono and mainlining braid and then using a leader. I am wondering what lb test for each of the 3000 and 4500. For each reel, What is the ideal lb test to back mono, mainline braid (lb test), and then leader lb test. What lengths of backing, mainline, leader should I be using for each. Should I use the guide lines on the reel for each? I have seen very varied responses on other posts, which I am assuming is mostly preference. Second thing I am wondering, is what are some of the better lures to use for this type of fishing, and live bait setups. What weights should be used, rigs, etc. Any advice would be great. Thanks! Ric
  2. I am planning on using my 6'6" Medium spinning rod and 6' ML spinning rod for more river fishing in NC in the Charlotte area. I want to spool the reels with 6 lb test but should I spool it with fluro or mono? I would consider 10 or 15 lb braid to fluro or mono but I don't know how to tie the knots and sometimes using a barrel swivel can be a pain. My goal would be to catch smallies but no idea if that's even realistic in my area so would be happy to use mostly the ML rod and catch any species I can in the rivers. Thanks for the help!
  3. Hello BR community, I have a question regarding Monofilament line. I recently spooled up my Shimano Citica with 17 lb. test Mono and the line just doesn’t sit right on the spool. It keeps bunching up and not looking tight and orderly around the spool like my other line does.it also seems to backlash quite frequently. I’ve been fishing for a while and have a pretty educated thumb so it’s a little frustrating. What gives? Is the line to heavy for the spool or is the line itself subpar? If I could get your opinions on this I would really appreciate it. Cam
  4. Hey guys, i have a question curious to see what and why do you have to use a leader line when using 30lb braid. Is it a bad thing to just run braid? Sorry for this basic question. Just wondering what must of you guys do and the reason for it. Thanks for any suggestions and comments. P.S. I use a baitcaster and rod with micro eyelets.
  5. I've been trying to find the best knot to use to tie a crankbait. People are saying to use a Palomar, improved clinch, Trilene, or a uni knot. These are all great options, but I have two things that make this questionable: split rings and line type. My four crankbaits come with split rings, and I'm not removing the rings anytime soon. What are the best knots to tie crankbaits with monofilament and the best knots for crankbaits with fluorocarbon? Both lines are light and under 10-pound test.
  6. So, while I have fallen victim to my share of broken lines and lost lures, I often wonder whether or not I’m pairing my line with the right tackle; obviously not! In my search for answers, very specific answers at that, I’ve come across what seems to have been the most thorough and yet efficient article on ‘bassfishin’ website titled fishing-line-guide [I couldn’t add link for some reason]. I mean, yes!!! Finally, a very detailed article, but... wow! I couldn’t help but feeling like my three rod, three reel arsenal will get me no where. I realize that there ideal setups per technique or presentation but where’s the middle of the road? How can I make the most out of a reel without having to switch out the line with each lure change? For example, if one of my rod and reel combos can work many techniques and handle (obviously) the weight of many lures but technically based on the article requires a different line for each, how do I get around having to switch out the line? Does anyone have better recommendations? I fish (freshwater) with monofilament because I’m fairly new to fishing and that’s what’s always recommended to me. My current reels and rods are as follows: G.Loomis Mag Bass 782c 6’6” Med Fast Mag Bass 844c 7’ Heavy Fast Crankbait 864C DF 7’2” Med-Heavy Mod Shimano Chronarch 200E7 7.0:1 Curado K 6.2:1 & 8.5:1
  7. I'm sort of new to bass fishing, I bought a few reels, I fish a lot of soft plastic and the guy recommended 12lbs trilene big game, i assumed it was fluorocarbon but found out I was mistaken about a month later. This is my education so far on fishing line... fluorocarbon sinks, and it's practically invisible, monofilament floats. (I'm comfortable with my knowledge on braided line) That's all I know. The info I need: - Crankbaits - mono or fluro, what lbs test? -spinnerbait/chatterbait - mono or fluro, what lbs test? - Texas rigs and jigs - mono or fluro, what lbs test?
  8. For lack of better words, can someone please explain Line Capacity/Test as if you were teaching a child! I've read many posts on the subject but there's so much fisherman jargon and technical terms that I'm a tad confused. I'm new to fishing in regards to finally purchasing my own tackle, rather then just showing up to the lake/ocean and fishing with a buddy's gear. As an example, I got an amazing deal on a few highend rods and one of the reels I purchased new and nearly free, was a Chronarch 200e7. The specs on the box read: Nylon Mono / lb. (yds.) -- 8(180) • 10(155) • 14(110) PowerPro Braided -- 30(190) • 50(120) • 65(80) Nylon Mono -- 8(180) • 10(155) • 14(110) Fil Tresse PowerPro -- 30(190) • 50(120) • 65(80) Lol, I'm so confused! Help, please! I'm looking to purchase a Mono, Braided, and Fluorocarbon Line but I don't know what I'm suppose to purchase for this particular reel or the others for that matter.
  9. Hey guys, I was looking into getting a baitcaster since I have never had one I thought what the heck why not give one a shot. There is just one thing holding me back what line to use? I have a pack of 25lb monofilament that has been sitting in my garage and was wondering if that would work? I have watched videos and read threads on what to use but it seems like everyone has a different preferences and wanted to know if the 25lb mono would work or if not what is best? Thanks!
  10. What is your favorite brand 15 pound monofilament
  11. What type of fishing line (braided, monofilament, fluorocarbon) do you guys prefer for bass and why?
  12. To all the people using mono line what is your go to company? Looking for a good brand as I have not been thrilled about the few brands ive tried. Is the Berkley big game any good? Seeing the cheap prices makes me iffy about purchasing it because of how cheap it is. Looking to stay at 12 lb. I have braid and fluorocarbon setups and just looking for a good mono. Thanks for your time
  13. Hey all, I've been fishing Bass with 15lb Fluorocarbon my whole life. Yet when I watch all the fishing shows I see pros using 25lb, 30lb, or braid for the same Jig n Pig set up I use. I've never had this line break unintentionally but I can't help wondering if I'm missing out on something or have just been lucky with no breaks besides a few Gar ripping it up with their teeth. Anyone else use 15lb over the heavier stuff with equal results? Have I not been catching big enough Bass? lol
  14. Hey guys I have a question about fishing line. I live in Central Florida and I have gotten pretty big into bass fishing, although I being a student I don't have the budget to buy all the rods and reels that I need for different techniques. That being said I am fishing two rods. I have a 7ft medium spinning rod and then a 7ft MH baitcaster that I use the most. I primarily throw Texas rigged soft plastics with the baitcaster and I want to know what kind of line I should have on this rod that I can use with the most different techniques. I want a line that I can fish soft plastics and jigs with as well as a top water frog from time to time and topwater hard baits and chatter baits. Obviously I know there is not one perfect line but if you were limited to one rod like I am what line would you go with? Also if the answer is braid with a fluorocarbon leader do I need to match line diameters or can I use a 12lb fluoro leader with 30lb braid even though they are not the same diameter? Any advice about line is greatly appreciated!
  15. Looking to respool my ultralight rod/reel today. Wondering if this is a good idea to do this with monofilament. I already have the 6lb mono (in my last post) but im concerened if i spool it now that by the time ice out rolls around it will already have memory on it. Thoughts?
  16. Hello everyone, quick question. Even though monofilament line floats AND is good for topwater, can I still use it for lures that I want to sink, like a jig or senko type worm? If SO, what are some good types of line? Also, would a copolymer line be better for me if I wanted to use it for topwater lures AND lures that sink? If SO, what are some red commended types of copolymer? Thank you for all tips AND opinions.
  17. Anyone have any exposure to this? Trying to decide between copolymer and braid for my pond fishing rod. Med Fast Shimmano Carrus
  18. Monofilament- Pros- invisible to fish, clear Cons- stretches, less feel than braid, heavy lb tests tend to be thick, must be ripped when caught in a snag, not strong enough to break out of a snag Braid Pros- no stretch, great feel, thin diameter in heavy lb tests, strong enough to pull out of snags Cons- not clear, often green or other natural colors, possibly seen by fish easier. The question- Do bass see braided line and decide not to strike due to the braided line? Or does the visibility of the line make no difference for the fish. My opinion- I prefer braid because of its strength and ability to get out of snags easily. It also has great feel and a lot can fit on the spool. My only issue is the visibility of the line. I fish both clear and murky waters. I know it would make sense to use my braid setup for murky waters and mono setup for clear waters; but, even in clear waters there are snags and i still want my 20lb braid strength rather than 12 or 8 lb mono. 20 lb mono is way too thick and heavy and i would never use that, plus it stretches and lacks feel. What's your opinion? Looking for input, Thanks! Also i have considered flurocarbon but its very expensive, so i stick away from that option.
  19. I have a rod 6'6" action medium, 6-12lbs line and reel which can hold 10lbs line. What lbs braided line can i put on my rod for cats and carp fishing? What are the equivalents mono to braided?
  20. Forgive my ignorance of the baitcaster style rods because I am still very new to them. But I have a theory about backlash? So basically everyone has told me to set my magnetics up so that my craws/jig n pigs will fall VERY slowly. However; when I do this I always get backlash, I figure because the line is still running out of the bail and I am not proficient at thumbing it at all. So I imagine I could just tighten it so the lure doesnt fall I will cast shorter, but it would be harder to backlash? Either way I cast only about 10ft with my baitcaster at the moment so it would not matter, should I do this to avoid backlash? Thanks!
  21. For a lot of reasons, I would rather use mono line as opposed to other types. I'm aware sensitivity is greatly reduced but what if I have high vis line and watch my line for movement. Would I miss alot of bites? By the way I fish very cloudy water so high vis line is not an issue
  22. So I like to flip and pitch my baits on mono line, simply because it is extremely low maintenance and I do not fish often enough (unfortunately) to drop 20 bucks on like 150 yards of braid! Anyways, a lot of people who I talk to about this ( I use trilene big game) tell me I should be going up to 20lb test around SPARSE cover. Last summer I landed my pb largemouth (5pnd 2oz 19.5inches, fatass bass) on 10lb big game around some serious tree branches and weed cover. My question is, if I could land this bass out of sparse cover on 10lb line with medium spinning gear, why are people shocked when I tell them I flip with 14lb mono on my baitcasters?
  23. I was wondering if anyone knows the difference between co-polymer line such as p-line cxx and fluorocarbon when it comes to line stretch.I was also wondering if the floating characteristics were more similar to mono and braid or fluorocarbon. Any help would be much appreciated. God Bless
