  1. Trying to to stretch line and get the most use out of it these days. Can I get away with keeping my older 6lb test flouro as a base for my spinning reel and tying on a slightly heavier 7lb test flouro on as my working line? I cut down the older 6lb line to make up about 15% of my total as my base. Then filled the top 85% with the new 7lb test flouro line. I’ve got it tied on to a solid leader knot which is buried deep in the spool. I know that it’s not usually, or maybe ever practical to tie on a leader that’s heavier than the line behind it, but in this case the base line will never get close to touching air, or even seeing sunlight. With that being said, I still want to present the issue to everyone here because I don’t want to end up wasting more line by doing this… if it ends up causing me issues with casting distance? or my line to just break? Would it be safer for me to go ahead and take this base/leader line off and string only the 7lb on it? Of course I should of asked this question before I even spooled it…better now than never I guess 🙂. Thanks everyone!
  2. So I have already tried a c-rig with using my 12lb fluorocarbon as a leader. I use a barrel swivel so it is pretty easy to attach a lead. Should I look into using a fluorocarbon leader for other bait presentations? I have 30lb test PowerPro (green) on my bait caster. My next trip I'm planning on trying out a swimming Senko on a shank weighted swimbait hook. It is tied directly to the 30lb braid. If so how would I use a leader? Should I splice the line? Will fluorocarbon splice to braid? Use snaps or swivels for it? I hear people talk all the time about using leaders but not much talk about how they actually implement a leader.
  3. How often should you retie your line to line connections?
  4. I was just wondering when to use a leader and what the point of it is? I pretty much fish bass exclusively and they aren't toothy so I was wondering why use a leader? Started fishing this summer so would love to know, thanks.
  5. I fish a small lake with fairly clear water and a LOT of 20-30" muskies. Because of the water clarity, what do you guys think is the lightest leader I can get away with. I have caught a few on 20lb fluorocarbon, but I don't want to risk being cut off. Also, I want to go a little bit lighter because there are also some nice smallies, largemouth and walleyes there. It seems that if I am using a fluorocarbon leader, I will catch quite a few of them, but as soon as I switch to wire, they won't hit. I will be mainly using crankbaits and 1oz lipless baits, but might get into some topwater action as well. Thanks
  6. Could someone school me on the difference between regular floro line and a spool of floro leader? I want to start putting a leader on my braid (12&8 mono eq.) Do i want to use the same leader 12&8 or use bigger leader? Just seems it would be more cost effective, buy gettting a 200yd spool as opposed to 50 yd at the same price. Also what brand or brands would be helpful.Im ordering from BPS tonight. Thanks everyone............
  7. Hey guys, Let me just start this off by saying this is my second year bass fishing and I love it. "I'm hooked" as a corny saying fishermen have used. I have a couple questions about leaders if you could help...I have right now 20 lb power pro braided moss green line on my baitcaster. I was wondering if I need to use a leader...especially for jigs and worms and crankbaits. I didn't use a leader at all for top water such as buzzbaits and frogs and poppers and I was successful. But it is that underwater action that I have been struggling with. I'm wondering if the fish are just staring at my moss green line attached to my worm and laughing at this novice fisherman. Please help if you can. Thanks a lot and can't wait for the 13' fishing season!
  8. I'm a fifteen year old male from northern Wisconsin. I've been fishing hardcore for 2 years now, mainly bass and walleye. Everything I know about fishing has come from reading books, internet, and self experience. Never was taught by my father or grandpa or male figure. So here I am today with a question for someone with lots of knowledge. I use a 2 spinning outfits and one baitcasting outfit while fishing; all which spooled with 8-10lb mono, because of price and lack of knowledge of other lines. I understand the stretch of mono, sinking of fluro, and sensitivity of fluro. I'm now willing to spend the extra money on new lines for better results but have no clue what is the most benificial. I tend to use lots of crankbaits, jerkbaits, and wacky rigged 5 inch worms.. I am very capable of tying a double uni knot to make a leader or just tie lines together for a backing but I have no clue when to use it and which what other kind of line? I've heard lots about how you cant use braided line completely because it'll dig into the spool or slip? What do I use for a backing and how much? I dont have a lot of money flow so cheaper ways of spooling but most effective would be the preferd method. Now for Leaders; What to use for what, how long of a leader, and i've heard that some lines (mostly braided) can scare fish away when fluro is near invisbile? What about mono? Any information on any of these topics would be much appreciated..
