  1. I am a bank fisherman, who is also on a budget. I want to start using the Texas rig more. I have 1 quality bait-casting combo, an Abu Garcia Black-Max Vengeance 6'9'' M. I currently have it spooled with 20 lbs braid. Again, I am a BANK FISHERMAN. My question is: Should I use a leader to help with stealth? Or just use my braid like I have been? Also, should I use a leader all the time for different lures like lipless crankbaits, or jigs? I feel that if I use one and get hung up, I will only lose my leader, and a lure instead of 30 plus feet of braid. I have some 8 lbs mono, and can't really afford to go purchase an entire roll of F.C. Plus I don't want to get away from my braid because I use the same combo for top water frogs, jigs, and everything else I decide to fish with. You guys here at BassResource.com have always pulled through and gave me quality advice, so please don't let me down now!
  2. Looking for some guide advice for a build I’m about to get started on. I’m building my ideal popping cork rod for inshore speckled trout fishing. I usually run a 20# or 30# braid main line with a fluorocarbon leader anywhere between 12# and 20#. I use either a uni knot or FG knot to connect the lines together. What guide setup does everyone like for a spinning rod where a leader knot will come into play? Micros are obviously not an option, but I’m wondering what everyone thinks about this scenario before I decide.
  3. Hi folks, I want to weigh the opinions of my fellow Smallie aficionados on your Favorite Fluorocarbon Line to use as Leader Material. I'm talking bottom contact, rocks abound, tubes, small jigs, craws, etc. I fish a lot of rocky rivers with fast current, so line control can be sketchy at the beat of times. Abrasion resistance is key! I fish braided line as a main (obviously?), so how limp or manageable a fluoro is or isn't doesn't necessarily make or break it for me. So, do you guys have a favorite? Is there one line that has rarely let you down? I've had a 330yd spool of Sunline Super Sniper for, literally, years now. Using it only as leaders makes it last and last. It served me well, but it seems I got lucky, as many people have had serious quality control issues with Sunline. That price tag is hard to stomach when it could easily be garbage based on a daunting amount of reviews... Thanks in advance! And feel free to counter my braid-fluoro preference if you have another line you prefer.
  4. I know most people that use 10 ft+ of a leader, but I only use a 2 foot fluorocarbon leader on my braid. I have a 20 lb leader tied on to 40 lb braid. Is using only a 2 foot leader pointless? Will bass still be line shy or will the 2 feet offer enough of a buffer that the bass won't be able to comprehend that the braid is actually indirectly connected to the lure? Also, is 20lb leader overkill? Since your line is only as strong as the weakest link, I didn't want to use too light of a leader so I can avoid breaking off. I also use 2 foot leader because my rod has microguides and knots don't make it through very well, so I tend to make my leaders short so that I don't have to bring the knot into the guides. Is this a silly strategy?
  5. I just attempted to tie on my first fluro leader to braid, however when I cast or reel in, the knot is getting caught in the guides. I felt like I sinched the knot pretty good but I noticed on the NRX it has more of the smaller guides at the end of the rod. Some of the specs of the equipment I used: - Shimano Metanium MGL - G. Loomis NRX 894 - 50 lbs power pro braid - 20 lbs seagaur red label fluro the knot I used for the leader was a uni-to-uni knot thanks!
  6. I have been using braid with fluorocarbon line as my leader, but I'm going out to get some heavier lb test fluoro. I was wondering if I should get fluorocarbon leader line instead of just the regular line. The leader line is much more expensive and you only get spools of like 30 yards or so. Is it worth it to get fluoro leader line? What are the advantages/disadvantages?
  7. I currently have 30 pound braid on all my rods. (both spin and baitcaster) I then have a leader 4-5 feet long on the end, which has been 12 pound mono. Im planning to switch to a floro leader for the abrasion strength. Does the 30pound braid/12pound floro seem like a good pair? Im fishing for bass 99% of the time and here in northeast PA ive only caught 2 over 6 pounds, so i dont need monster tackle. But, we have some heavy cover/vegetation in some lakes i fish, so half of me questions the 12 pound leader especially in the hard, heavy cover hooksets.
  8. Am I the only one who never uses a leader when fishing with braid? never really saw the need and as far as I can tell it doesn't affect the number or size of fish I catch in really clear water
  9. Hey guys I am having a hard time figuring out exactly how to fish with a fluorocarbon leader. Lately I have been fishing 40lb braid with a 12lb leader. I am using Spiderwire EZfluoro it is pretty cheap fluorocarbon should I upgrade the fluoro I am using? The problem that I have been having is that it has been breaking off in various ways. The other night I went out and caught 7 bass and had no problems. I went out this morning and the first bass I hooked in to jumped and shook its head and broke off about 1/4 of the way up the leader. Then the second bass bit and I went to set the hook and it broke off right below the connection to the braid. A few different times it seemed like the knot just came undone and I lost my lure. Have you guys experienced this with fluorocarbon? Any suggestions on how to get the best performance out of fluoro and have as little break-offs as possible? What kind of fluoro do you use? What kind of knot do you use to attach it to the braid and to the hook? Also what is your opinion of fluorocarbon leaders, do you use them, why or why not? Thanks!
  10. I ushually make my drop shot leader about a foot and a half long, how about you? I ushually use a drop shot for when fish are feeding just above the ground. if they're feeding any higher in the water column I feel a crankbait or other lure is more effective or makes more sence to use.
  11. I am a co-angler and I am trying to set up my rod and reels so I can be a little more versatile for next season of tournament fishing. Keep in mind I am not interested in buying anymore rods at the moment so I have to work with what I have ,which for western NY I believe I have enough rod and reel combos(for now) to successfully tournament fish . What I was thinking of trying is putting 50 lb. braid on a 7:1:1 Lew's Tournament Speed Spool Casting Reel and a 7ft. MH St. Croix Mojo Bass Casting Rods. This rod has been tested to be like other brands heavy action rods. I would like to use this setup for multiple applications and apply different fluorocarbon leaders for the different applications or use the braid when needed for a frog rod. Also If I were to attach a 17lb flouro leader to the 50lb braid to cast around docks with a jig or Texas rig is this a good idea? i want to be able with this rod to fish heavy cover or lily pads with a frog and then just add diffrent leader size like 12 -20 lb floro for spinnerbait or texas rig or jig etc. for the most part this rod would be use for things other then heavy cover but braid lasts for a couple years so it would be more cost effective and time effective for me to put 65 lb or 50lb braid and puton or take off a floro leader when needed.
  12. Hi everyone I am just wondering when fishing with light braid, for example 8# to 15# test, does anyone tie on a fluorocarbon leader when targeting smallies or trout? I would be throwing a senko or spoons at 1/2oz or under.... Anyone tried this before? is it a good idea? How long should the leader be? Thanks
  13. I've recently been starting to mess around with flourocarbon line. I've tried it as my main line on my one baitcaster, but I don't like how it handles nearly as much as I like my braided line. However, I do seem to be getting more bites in clearer water when using the flourocarbon. So like many others, I've decided it's probably best to use my braid as a main line, and then use the flouro as a leader. So last night I decided to practice tying my fluoro leaders to my braid on all of my setups. I used a Surgeon's knot to tie all of my leaders on. After tying my leaders on, I just don't trust that this knot is going to hold up once I get a fish on. I know I have the knots tied correctly, but they just don't seem like they will hold up with the weight of a thrashing fish on the end of the line. Am I over worrying? Or is there something else I should try for better results? For reference, I am using Invis-X 10lb Fluoro and tying onto Suffix 832 40 &50lb. Thanks in advance guys!
  14. I just got in to bass fishing and picked up a president 6930 reel and Abu Garcia 6'6 vengence M/MF rod. After some research on here I figured I'd put 10lb braid on with an 8lb floro leader. My question is do you set your drag @ 25% strength of the braid or leader? I would guess the leader since it is "weaker" but I don't want to assume...thx Jim
  15. So... I have a solid base of 50 lb p-pro braid on my Abu Revo S, getting her set up for this spring. This is my first baitcaster, so i am going to be pitching with it mostly, and doing some cranking with it potentially. Paired with a veritas 7' MH, fast action (I realize not a great cranking rod). What is everyone's favorite brand of Fluoro to use as a leader attached to braid? I know to match up my diameters, but I have seen a lot of mixed reviews out there on different sites. I wasn't sure if people have a differing opinion on fluoro to use as a leader vs. using it for the entire line. Budget doesn't bother me that much, as a spool should last me a while using it as just leader. Thanks guys
  16. Hey guys, I'm in need of some information..... I use two rods with braid on them, 65lb (17eq) on my baitcaster and 15lb (4eq) on my spinning reel. The fishing has been slow lately these dog days and I've had some luck with my ultralight crappie/panfish combo, however a lost hawg this evening has me wishing I would've brought either one of my aforementioned braid rigs this time. I've read when finesse fishing it's advantageous to have a leader attached, especially in clear water and in my experience a couple of the bodies of water I fish do tend to actually produce better with flourocarbon line versus my braid, and that makes me wonder if I might find it helpful and more successful if I use a flouro leader on my braid rigs when I'm in these clear bodies of water. That brings me to my main question...... As I mentioned my rigs have 15 and 65 pound braids, so what weight of flouro leader should I use? It seems a disadvantage to have 15 or 65 pound braid on my rigs then put a 4 or 6 pound flouro leader on it. That seems to me that it would negate the need for a strong line if the weakest link of the line is the leader itself. So what pound test would I do best using, and where do I find it? I see whole 150/300yd spools of flouro at my local stores, but rarely do they top 10lb and I don't need 150/300 yards of it. Any advice on what and where would be appreciated as would any advice on my logic of using a leader. This is my first time considering it, so I'm not well versed on the pros/cons. Thanks guys
  17. I just recently picked up an Abu Garcia Veritas 7' MH rod and an Abu Garcia Promax2 7.1:1, 8 ball bearing reel and I'm wondering what I should run on it. It holds 12lb mono 145 yd and 30lb braid 145 yd... I'm going to run 30 lb braid but which of the following should I do? a. (x)lb mono backing and 30 lb braid (Don't know exact lengths of each) b. 30lb braid only c. 30 lb braid with a (x)lb mono leader (Don't know exact length of each) d. 30 lb braid with a (x)lb fluorocarbon leader (Don't know exact length of each) Much appreciated, thanks!
  18. I have a 20 lb braid on my baitcaster. I was wondering what size leader should I use. I feel pretty confident with 20lb braid and haven't had any snapped lines. (knock on wood) I bought previously a 17lb flurocarbon line and I'm wondering if that is too heavy with the 20lb braid. Also if I should use monofilament or fluorocarbon as a leader with my braid. Thanks a lot Counting down the days to spring.
