  1. Coming from a trout background using flies and inline spinners I've never had use for terminal loop knots. Now that I'm learning to fish for bass and crappie I do. (Admittedly there is a loop not used for dry flies but I never learned it or used it.) Are there more than one of these loop knots? Are any of them more reliable than others? I look forward to your replies and learning how to tie a loop knot.
  2. Hey BR, There are SO many different knots, but when it comes to knots for braid I have 3 knots that I use almost exclusively (98%+) In this video I share my top 3 knots for braided lines. They have served me VERY well. THANK YOU for watching! JN
  3. I've been trying to find the best knot to use to tie a crankbait. People are saying to use a Palomar, improved clinch, Trilene, or a uni knot. These are all great options, but I have two things that make this questionable: split rings and line type. My four crankbaits come with split rings, and I'm not removing the rings anytime soon. What are the best knots to tie crankbaits with monofilament and the best knots for crankbaits with fluorocarbon? Both lines are light and under 10-pound test.
  4. The main rod I use, because it's easier to carry just one around the lake on foot along with my backpack tacklebox and icechest for my drinks and lunch, is starting to get too low on line, from changing lures. The line I use is spectra braid. My question is, is it ok to connect more braid to the braid I have on there? If so, is a uni to uni knot good for that? I've tried a uni to uni knot to connect more mono Trilene XT to it, but somehow it keeps getting all jacked up. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, if anything at all. I've seen the FG knot, but it looks like it would take me too long to even try, not to mention messing up lots of line in the process.. lol. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  5. My wife uses a spinning reel when she fishes. It's an old Shimano reel that is probably a bit big for bass fishing. In the past we constantly had line twist issues with mono so we switched to braid. Problem solved! Now however we have a new problem. Often the braid gets small kinks in it on the reel. They are not in the line that has been cast out but deeper in the spool. When she casts often the line being cast get caught on the kinks of the line deeper in the spool and makes her cast stop mid air. I have tried pulling out most of the line and rewinding it tightly which seems to help for awhile. Anyone know how to avoid these kinks developing? We had been using 30 pound braid but we switched to 50 which improved the issue somewhat.
  6. bet that kills the action of your bait... http://www.worldfishingnetwork.com/gear/post/never-tie-knots-again
  7. Teaching myself how to flip and I have ran into an unexpected problem. Is there an easy way to clean snell knots off a hook once you are ready to re-tie or switch out baits?
  8. Hi, this may sound like a dumb question, but when throwing swimbaits on braid with a mono leader do you need to adjust the way you cast? I was recently fishing with an S-waver 168 on 50lb braid with a 15lb fluorocarbon leader and I made a cast and my leader snapped and my S-waver went flying across the lake . I used a double uni knot to connect my leader to the braid and my line was not nicked or anything. Did I just use the wrong knot? Any info on what I did wrong would be very helpful. Thanks
  9. I have been fishing jigs with either a MH baitcasting rig with 50# braid, or a ML spinning setup with 10# braid. In clear water I typically attach a 10# fluorocarbon leader. The problem is that sooner or later I try to set the hook on a fish, and the knot connecting the lines will fail. I started out using a double uni knot, and after a few failures, tried an Alberto knot, which failed even faster. It typically happens when I've been fishing jigs with a series of sharp twitches, which I believe is helping to loosen the fluorocarbon. Then when I apply more pressure, with a hookset, it finally gives completely. Occasionally I superglue a knot, but I would rather not rely on that. Any suggestions, or other knots that will hold up better?
  10. After the $9.99 Shadow Raps that finally helped my buddies and me dial in on stubborn bass early this past Spring, my next best tackle purchase is a mobile app - "Knots 3D". If I only used "Knots 3D" to correctly tie the Uni-to-Uni knot I use for my 12lbs flo leader to Sufix braid, the app would be we'll worth the $2.99. However, it demonstrates every knot I'll ever need in 3D animation that's completely controllable. What has been your most helpful tackle purchase in 2015?
  11. Would tying a rapala knot/non-slip loop knot ON TO a split ring give any advantages for crankin'? Or is the loop and split ring both too much? What about jerk baits.. loop knot or improved clinch?
  12. Hey guys I am having a hard time figuring out exactly how to fish with a fluorocarbon leader. Lately I have been fishing 40lb braid with a 12lb leader. I am using Spiderwire EZfluoro it is pretty cheap fluorocarbon should I upgrade the fluoro I am using? The problem that I have been having is that it has been breaking off in various ways. The other night I went out and caught 7 bass and had no problems. I went out this morning and the first bass I hooked in to jumped and shook its head and broke off about 1/4 of the way up the leader. Then the second bass bit and I went to set the hook and it broke off right below the connection to the braid. A few different times it seemed like the knot just came undone and I lost my lure. Have you guys experienced this with fluorocarbon? Any suggestions on how to get the best performance out of fluoro and have as little break-offs as possible? What kind of fluoro do you use? What kind of knot do you use to attach it to the braid and to the hook? Also what is your opinion of fluorocarbon leaders, do you use them, why or why not? Thanks!
  13. I heard that if you tie a knot incorrectly or sloppily with fluro it can result in break-offs. why is this? and what knots work well with fluro? oh and one last thing, why doesn't this happen with mono?
  14. Anyone who knows me knows that i love to flip and i have had some question about something late that i wasnt sure about. Around here we dont have much cause to use braid but there are times like here recently that we do need it. I generally flip with 20 pound fluoro but that just doesnt cut when i start flipping grass. I dont have the money 2 have 2 separate flipping rods or 2 be constantly changing line. so i was wondering if this would work. If i were to spool my reel with 50 pound braid for the mainline then tie a leader of 20 pounde Fluoro would it work? So that way i can use the fluoro in clearer water then just cut it off if i start flipping grass. I do this with my shakey heads for greater sensitivity but was not sure if this would also work for Flipping. If anyone has any insight please let me know! Josh
  15. I've been having some problems with my yo zuri hybrid line and wanted to know if anybody else had the same complications? I got 14 lb test and its been breaking around or in the reel. I've gotten a few birds nest but not a crazy amount, does that have anything to do with it? Ive lost a few lures and a fish or two and im not happy about that this is also my first baitcaster, maybe im doing something wrong? All input is appreciated!
