  1. So I used to be a regular Mono user, using 12lb straight mono. But for some reason the line kept breaking out of nowhere and I didn't like the slack feel to the line since I mainly fish senkos and I could barely tell when the bass bit it. So a few days ago I switched to a braid with fluoro leader combo and I went out and got 20lb power pro braid and 14lb berkely vanish fluoro. I have been trying the FG knot since I heard its the strongest knot out there, but it keeps coming loose and breaking off. The line is fine but I keep losing my leader at the knot and all my senkos too! Am I just tying the knot wrong or is it a problem of my braid being heavier than my fluoro? I didn't realize that the braid had to be lighter than fluoro whenever I saw a forum about braid to fluoro leaders everyone had much heavier braid than their fluoro leaders so I went out and did the same. But I read the the fluoro has to be thicker than the braid for the FG knot to work. So is the FG knot breaking off because I'm tying it wrong or is it because my braid is a heavier pound test than my fluoro?
  2. After much discussion w a buddy of mine in regards to leaders, I decided to try a flouro leader on my braid. I joined the lines w a dbl uni and had nothing but issues on the cast. I started doing some research and found that a lot of guys use the Alberto knot. After watching see videos and considering the knot construction, it seems to me that the Alberto would be a bulkier knot and would cause the same issue I was having (knot ticking the eyelets & causing overruns). I guess my question is this...am I doing something wrong? Should I be using yet a different knot or is the length (6' or so) of my leader somehow responsible? Any pointers would be appreciated. -J
  3. So I've been trying to tie an FG knot recently, and have managed to tie it pretty well on heavier leader lines, but cannot manage to get it to tighten on smaller leader lines. 15lb braid to 15lb flouro works fine. Using 15lb braid to 8lb flouro, and the knot just slides. Is the diameter or 8lb flouro just too small for this to work, or has anyone figured out how to make this work?
  4. I saw an ad in Bassmaster Magazine for Tauten's Linewelder. It looks to plasti-weld mono and fluorocarbon lines, eliminating tying knots. Anyone out there have one? Thanks in advance for your comments.
  5. I lost a very good fish today from a failure of the knot tying my braid main line to fluorocarbon leader. I have used the Alberto knot for this purpose for several years now and have not previously had a failure in the leader connection. Today I hung a very good fish and had him on the way to the boat when all went slack. What I found was that the braid still had the remnants of the knot; however, there was no trace of the fluorocarbon. I did some internet checking and found a claim that the Alberto knot "wears out" over time getting weaker due to the application of pulling force. What do you think? Should the leader to braid connection be retied every week or so? Is there an better knot for this application? I really like the ease of tying the Alberto, but, it doesn't always go through my last guide so well. Please, no complicated knots. Thanks in advance.
  6. I've recently been starting to mess around with flourocarbon line. I've tried it as my main line on my one baitcaster, but I don't like how it handles nearly as much as I like my braided line. However, I do seem to be getting more bites in clearer water when using the flourocarbon. So like many others, I've decided it's probably best to use my braid as a main line, and then use the flouro as a leader. So last night I decided to practice tying my fluoro leaders to my braid on all of my setups. I used a Surgeon's knot to tie all of my leaders on. After tying my leaders on, I just don't trust that this knot is going to hold up once I get a fish on. I know I have the knots tied correctly, but they just don't seem like they will hold up with the weight of a thrashing fish on the end of the line. Am I over worrying? Or is there something else I should try for better results? For reference, I am using Invis-X 10lb Fluoro and tying onto Suffix 832 40 &50lb. Thanks in advance guys!
  7. So I had Gander Mountain split 150 yds of 20lb PP braid on my spinning and bait-caster. I think the guy neglected to put enough braid on the spinning reel. After about 3 casts I would feel a violent smack and my lure would fall short...I looked and could see the brad was running out and catching on the mono to braid knot that was tied. My spinning reel is a Lew's Speed Spool and has its own spool for braid with rubber in middle, should I go back and have them re-spool 10lb Power Pro and not use any backing? First time with braid on spinning reel and I want to stick with it. Not sure if it was the lack of braid they put on there or the knot the gentleman at gander put on, it just kept catching on it, sometimes even before getting down to just mono the knot would stick through the braid and get hung up 10 yds during cast.. The first 3-4 cast I did get decent distance of 40-50 yards.
  8. I've had a numerous people ask me how to tie a double double uni-knot. I found a video on how to do it. The link for the video is at the bottom of this page. Here is the Link and thank you for watching.
