  1. I was Reading the Bassmaster magazine Jan/Feb 2021 and I came across this add, Raphala talking about their Hit Stick jerk bait. I have never use them but I found something interesting in them, First Variety of Sizes and colors, And second and most important that they claim that it will act like balsa wood lures. Third, the sound system in the design. Forth, Pricing is very good. For me it is very unique lure but if only it was suspending as well, I would get the whole line of it. Do any of you guys using this lure? and what can you say about it?
  2. So while out fishing today I managed to snap my Falcon Bucoo Brc-4-166 "Treble Hooker" rod. This was the rod that I used as a multi purpose crankbait, jerk bait, and top water spook style bait rod. The rod is just over a year old and should be covered under warranty. I emailed them with the hopes that I can get a credit to upgrade the rod. I really like the Lowrider series and I have a few from that line already. I’m looking at the Lowrider LFC-68M Jerkbait rod as a replacement. The specs show that the power and action is the same as the rod I was using (medium power/moderate action) . Is there any reason that this rod wouldn’t be a good choice for my current needs. Thanks in advance!
  3. Hi guys I’ve had a tremendous amount of success on jerkbaits this year and purchased my first lure specific combo because of how much year round success I have had on them. I usually use the berkley Stunna and I tend to do really well making the lure do a walk the dog motion back and forth then every 10-12 ft popping the weight transfer bb so it makes the bait fall tail first back to the fish. However watching a tactical bass on video their jerkbaits did just hops forward sitting nose down and it seems those guys really know what they’re doing. Even when I use other baits like rhe Kvds rappala shadow rap and vision 110 I go for that side to side gliding motion. Am have I been fishing this wrong this whole time ? I catch tons of fish on them and they have become a huge confidence bait for me. But am I working them wrong , should I look for a more straight line approach? What do you guys try to make your jerkbaits do
  4. While most people think of jerkbaits as a strictly cold water bait fished with a slow cadence this is not unlocking the true potential of this bait. Hard and soft jerkbaits are something I always have rigged everytime I go fishing. let’s start with the differences and application of hard vs soft jerkbaits listed below is how where and why I fish each and the subcategories that hard jerkbaits are best divided into. Imo soft jerkbaits Soft jerk-baits excell in weeds and heavy coves they can be absolutely deadly under docks lay down and in super thick cover as you can texpose or in some baits even cover the hook point completely this is due to most hard jerks having 3 sets of trebles making them a nightmare in weeds and cover. The exception to this is deeper vegetation and shallow hard jerkbaits that allow you to fish 1-4 feet over the submerged vegetation but I almost always like a soft jerk-bait on those situations. Moving your soft bait quickly over the thick stuff and letting it shiny down into holes in the grass is absolutely deadly as well as skipping it under docks and cover and fishing them slow in the summertime. All in all soft jerkbaits are best utilized wherever you don’t want to lose your 15-25$ lure the cadences for these baits are not as important but the fall of shimmy when you kill it is these are almost never moved with the reel instead by snapping the slack in your line back and forth like a walk the dog style bait. they can also be a deadly follow up bait and can catch fish in similar situations to a wacky senko but offer a different shape and movement that can be deadly when everyone else has a wacky wig. hard jerkbaits are best broken up into 2 categories twitch baits and rip baits rip baits and example is the Kvd jerkbait if you look at the body and it’s wide and thick the bait takes more energy from your rod to move these baits are best when you are tying to drawl a fish attention through a flash most of the time they will have a roll when they twitch and put off a crazy flash into the water these baits are killer on sunny days year round but need to be worked very aggressively to be effective i generally go to a 1-2-3 pause 1-2 and they speed of the snaps and pauses will vary depending on water temp twitch baits are arguably the best all around jerkbait my favorites are the rapalla shadow rap berkley Stunna witch can work as a rip or a twitch bait and the notorious megabass vision 110 comming in at whopping 25$ per lure but well worth the investment. The lure I carry and throw 90% of the time is the Stunna because it is so versatile and I love the slow sink action. In the winter this is Uber important as you want your bait to shimmy down to the fish. In cold water i favour the vision as it has a less aggressive action. Spring- fall you will be surprised how hard fish will hit a jerkbait especially on either side of the spawn or around the shad spawn. I use the same 1-2-3 pause 1-2 cadence but I only every fish a slack line unlike the rip baits that don’t do much fished on slack the twitch bait catagory is also deadly for casting at fish chasing shad and is more effective at catching feeding fish than almost any other lure. Whenever I see gosh bust I instantly stop and grab a jerk-bait rod. Try hard jerkbait a above any submerged cover fish will swim up 5-10 feet in clear water to smoke these things I promise. My rule of thumb is I want my bait to be fished about 5 feet over the structure. Rod reel and line for a rod I like a 6’10 medium fast action I swap between mono and fluorocarbon I fish mono when the water temps get over 55 fluro under 55 the reason is that with a fast action rod when are actively feeding they will hammer you bait and it becomes less important for your bait to sink down to them like during winter. and with a fast action rod the stretch in the mono helps to keep those tiny trebles pinned. modifications you want your bait to sink head down in cold water and tail down in warm water this is a presence for me but you can upsize the back or front hooks to make this happen it is especially helpful if you would like to fish mono year round
  5. I'm looking for a new "multipurpose" rod/combo that could be used for walking baits, jerkbaits, or small crankbaits; mostly medium sized trebled baits under 1 1/2 oz. Also, do you think a curado 70 would work for these kinds of applications? It would be best if any rod suggestions were under or near 200.
  6. Has anyone else seen this jerkbait at iCast or the trailer on youtube? Looks like it might be giving the Vision 110 a run for it's money, especially at the 15$ pricepoint. Designed by Hank Cherry and it is supposed to release sometime this month. One of my favorite aspects of jerkbait fishing is that each jerkbait has a time and a place that it can outperform others but the Vision 110 is still my best performer 6-7 times out of 10. That being said, at 25$ for a single Vision 110, I would not mind being able to replace it with the Stunna at 15$ if it is able to compete. Thoughts?
  7. I have several old Lucky Craft pointers (both 100 & 128 models) that used to be favorites. However, when I fish them now they rarely return to a nose down position after the cast and sit tail down at almost 45*. Could it be that the magnet has gone bad (or weak) that holds the weighted ball bearing in place? If so how do I correct this problem. I hate to retire old favorite baits if I don't have to. Dan
  8. I own some 6th Sense Provoke jerkbaits (5 ft diver) and one Staysee 90 v2(deep dive) I have yet to use. I mainly fish smaller reservoirs and a couple ponds in my metro area, both from bank and boat. Also fish Okoboji chain a few times a year. The slots I am trying to fill for jerkbaits would be a shallower diver with a smaller profile for shallow ponds but also fishing clear water. And also just adding some deeper divers. I have mainly looked at more lucky crafts, but am hesitant because of price and not understanding the different models: pointer vs lighting pointer, pointer XD vs staysee, staysee vs staysee v2 vs v3. I have also looked at Rapalas but wish they had heavier options in smaller profile. Forage in lakes I fish is almost always bluegill and crappies, Okoboji has perch but also panfish.
  9. Im looking for any opinions on some rods. Im looking to get a new jerkbait, swimbait and jig rod. I need something that can handle jerkbaits that range from 5/16- 1/2oz with depth ranges of 4ft-15ft. Preferably something that is from 6’8”-6’10” and mh. The swimbait rod has to be able to handle swimbaits up to 7oz. And the jig rod i would need it to handle jigs that with a trailer weigh around 7/10 of an oz. I want something that has excellent sensitivity but also good backbone and 7’6”+ is what ive been comfortable with before thanks for the help
  10. For those of you that regularly use more than one, how do you decide which Rapala jerkbait to throw between a Husky Jerk, an X-Rap, a Shadow Rap, a Shadow Rap Shad, and a RipStop? Do you try more than one when you feel a jerkbait is the best presentation for the conditions or do you move spots or change presentations first? I had generally considered the Husky Jerk if I wanted a more subtle action and the X-Rap if I wanted more action or to work it more aggressively but now I’m looking at those plus the Shadow Raps and Shadow Rap Shads I’ve accumulated and having a hard time deciding where they fit in and I haven’t even tried a RipStop yet.
  11. Hey everyone, I’m looking for some recommendations for a good jerkbait rod specifically for the dreaded northern pike! Right now I have an avid x 6’6” med heavy fast with 30lb braid with a Lews tournament mb (which the gears just went in) but my problem with this setup is I can’t cast very far with baits such as x rap 12s and husky jerk 14s (which is what I primarily throw) especially into the wind. I believe my problem is having too stiff of a rod that doesn’t quite load up. I’m looking for something in the 6’6”-6’10” range. I can’t seem to find out what would improve my casting distance more, a medium rod with a fast tip or med heavy with a moderate tip. I’d like to stay with the med heavy because there are some pretty decent pike up here. I’ve also heard about some rods that are stiffer than rated like a medium would feel more like a med heavy. Also should I stick with a casting rod or would a spinning rod work better? If you have any other tips on how I could improve my casting distance without getting a new rod that would be greatly appreciated. thanks for your input, Dave
  12. I wanted to start a discussion for topwater baits everyone has had success with hunting the bronzebacks. Last weekend I hooked up on a few in East TN using a 3in topwater popper, and a few with a size 90 whopper plopper, but I'm curious as to what else might be a good topwater presentations? I've had some people recommend a jerkbait and one buddy even recommended wacky rigging a senko and dragging it on the top/a few inches down, but I haven't had time to try it out. I've also seen this "double plopper" A-rig looking buzz bait deal, and am very intrigued to hear if anyone has had success with it (at $18 a piece I didn't want to dive in if it's just a bunk bait). Lend me your knowledge, fellow smallie smackers!
  13. Hello all, I am new to this forum and wanted to pose a question for you guys. This is probably a shot in the dark, but here goes nothing: Years ago I lost my favorite jerk bait to a hungry largemouth at a friend's lakehouse. Snapped my 12 pound test like it was nothing and took my lure with it! This was my absolute FAVORITE lure. I could catch bass all year round using this lure, but I have NO idea who made it or where it came from, and I only had one like it. I have searched in stores for years to find another one like it but my guess is that is was a relatively old lure and is possibly discontinued. I found the lure in my tackle box over 10 years ago, and I'm sure it was relatively old at that time as well. Going to try my best to describe it and maybe with a stroke of luck one of you will be able to at least point me in the right direction (manufacturer possibly?) Here goes: Normal sized jerk bait, probably 4 inches long. 2 sets of treble hooks. Shallow diving, probably 3 feet at the most. Floating Plastic body and lip. Straight belly, curved back (like a Rapala), not curved or "s" shaped (like Rick Clunns) Body was painted with a metallic-like paint that would flake off in certain spots from overuse. Nothing special about the eyes, think they were just plastic beads, not painted on. The bill was clear plastic, not painted. Most distinctive feature were these HEXAGON shaped indentations covering the entire body of the lure, almost like a Smithwick, but these were much deeper, individualized indents. I know it was not a Smithwick or Rapala, as I have plenty of those. The lure almost resembled diamond plating and would reflect light beautifully. Closely resembles the old Rebel Hellcats, but the diamond indents on the side were even deeper than those, and the bill was closer to the lip of the lure. The color of mine was a dark blue with silver on the bottom (I'm sure other colors were available) I don't recall there being beads inside the lure. No other special features like a lateral line, fluffy tail, etc. I know this is asking a lot of you guys and is definitely a shot in the dark, but I know you guys could throw out some names of old lure manufacturers that I'm not thinking of.
  14. I'm thinking about picking one of these up as my next addition to the arsenal. Obviously I want to use it for jerkbaits, but it seem like it would be perfect for smaller spook-type baits and poppers as well. I would also want to use it for cranking squarebills through/near structure. I know people generally prefer longer rods for crankbaits, but I think this rod would probably be better suited to it than the two rods I already own. I fish a lot from a kayak so the smaller overall length and grip are probably even more of a benefit in that context. Any thoughts, commentaries, alternative suggestions? Thanks.
  15. I have my next rod purchase narrowed down, but need help picking a model/brand. I want to add a 6'6" Med/Mod-F Spinning rod to the arsenal for throwing all kinds of smaller treble hook style baits. The shorter length is specifically for walking-the-dog and working jerkbaits. This is also to help with accuracy when throwing squarebill cranks at timber. I plan to use this rod with spooks, poppers, crankbaits and jerkbaits, all on the smaller end of the spectrum. Any suggestions?
  16. What are some good options? I was looking at a megabass orochi xxx rattle viper, but after reading some reviews, I’m opening up to different options.
  17. So, while I have fallen victim to my share of broken lines and lost lures, I often wonder whether or not I’m pairing my line with the right tackle; obviously not! In my search for answers, very specific answers at that, I’ve come across what seems to have been the most thorough and yet efficient article on ‘bassfishin’ website titled fishing-line-guide [I couldn’t add link for some reason]. I mean, yes!!! Finally, a very detailed article, but... wow! I couldn’t help but feeling like my three rod, three reel arsenal will get me no where. I realize that there ideal setups per technique or presentation but where’s the middle of the road? How can I make the most out of a reel without having to switch out the line with each lure change? For example, if one of my rod and reel combos can work many techniques and handle (obviously) the weight of many lures but technically based on the article requires a different line for each, how do I get around having to switch out the line? Does anyone have better recommendations? I fish (freshwater) with monofilament because I’m fairly new to fishing and that’s what’s always recommended to me. My current reels and rods are as follows: G.Loomis Mag Bass 782c 6’6” Med Fast Mag Bass 844c 7’ Heavy Fast Crankbait 864C DF 7’2” Med-Heavy Mod Shimano Chronarch 200E7 7.0:1 Curado K 6.2:1 & 8.5:1
  18. Hey Everyone! This past year I coughed up the big bucks and bhave bought one sooner! So now Im wondering,"What else am I missing out on?" I am interested in hearing everyone else has learned about specific lures/plastics and which ones seem to far superior to the competition within the same category. thanks!
  19. I want a rod and reel that can do a good job with popper spooks and jerkbaits, and also what pound braid?

    4.2lb Jerkbait Smallmouth

    6.5lb Jerkbait Northern Pike
  22. I'm trying to make a topwater and jerkbait setup that includes the typical medium fast rod and a 6.8:1 reel. I want to use braid as I throw spooks in open water quite frequently and I like braid as I can twitch it on very long casts and I don't have to set the hook when they hit it 35+ yards out. However, I'm not sure about using jerkbaits with braid. It doesn't seem much different than using braid with topwater, and I've never had the treble hooks rip out of a topwater fish. I've read a few articles talking about the pros of using braid with jerkbaits. I would use 25-30 lb braid and a 6- 6 1/2 foot 8 lb fluorocarbon leader. What are y'all's opinions on using braid for jerkbaits? Thanks
  23. Before anyone gets all crazy with Megabass is the only one we worship, I am just asking because not everyone wants to drop $25 on a single lure. I don't want to spend $10 either. OK so I was just looking through the suspending jerkbaits on Ebay and there are quite a few nice looking ones listed as KDS Custom Painted SUSPENDING 110 Jerkbait Vision The seller has a 99.9% Positive feedback but I wasn't going through all the feedback to see exactly what the feedback on these was. I did search for comments here at bassresource and searched the web for info/reviews on them but came up empty. Has anyone tried one to see what they are really like?
  24. Hey guys, so I'm looking into buying a topwater /jerkbait rod that can also handle buzzbaits, soft plastics, etc.) but mainly for topwater/ jerkbaits! . The only dilemma i have is whether to buy a rod in the 7ft medium so it can be more versatile, or the 6'6 medium. Also, any rod eccomendations? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!
  25. recently, while on my favorite local pond, fishing my favorite jerkbait, on my favorite rod, I was having "ok" luck. the bait in question was a leland lures trout crank in brook trout. the pond I was fishing was very clear with a hint of green and not a hint of brook trout. so while I was still catching the bass i still felt i could do better if I a few in some clear baitfish colors. so, i was wondering if anyone knew how to 1. remove paint from a lure, 2. whether to use spray paint or airbrush on a lure, and 3. if ugly lure eyes can just be chipped out and replaced
