  1. im looking for a good casting reel that a can use for inshore salt water. i was looking at the tranx 200and the curado k. if anyone has any suggestions they would be very much appreciated. also does anyone know if the tatula 200 or tatula elite are saltwater capable
  2. We were fortunate enough to get down to HHI to visit my parents for Thanksgiving week, and I got in a few fishing outings. While the golf course pond bass were not cooperating too well, my saltwater friends were. My usual guide was out of town (how inconsiderate!) but I got the chance to fish with another really good guide. We picked up a few small trout on topwater as the sun was just rising, but nothing picture-worthy. The fun started at the second spot as we locked in on a school of redfish. They were not feeding as actively as we would have liked, and I have never before experienced such light bites from redfish, but they could not resist the Gulp shrimp for long. We ended up with 8-10 fish to the boat, with a few pulling loose. After the trip with the guide, I also managed some land-based success on my own as well. The first session at this spot yielded only a flounder, but the second session is when I finally managed to get the Lowcountry trout to come out and play. I managed to trick 5 trout up to 18 inches all on artificials. I think I'm starting to get addicted to sea trout fishing, so now I've got the itch to figure out how the heck to break my ~5 lb PB! These guys sure are fun when they decide to eat your lure on a ML spinning rod!
  3. Hey BR, I'm trying to get into stripper fishing (from shore) and I was wondering if I have the right gear. I'm thinking of using a Med/Hvy 7'6 Rod rated for lures up to 3oz, paired with a 5000 size spinning reel with 40lb braid to a 50lb mono leader for bigger jerkbaits, poppers and probably spoons. I'm also going to use a 7'6 Med/Hvy Rod rated for lures up to 1oz, paired with a 4000 size reel with 20lb braid to 30lb mono for jerkbaits. Would these combos work for what I am going to be using them for? Is a braid to leader know or swivel better? Any tips for fishing from a jetty? Any lure recommendations? Any help is greatly appreciated, Martin Sierra
  4. I could have SWORE there was a saltwater section on BassResource.com but I guess not! If you don't care to read my rambling, I have a TL:DR at the bottom of the post! Let me put it straight. I'm moving to Florida permanently. Every reel I own is a Daiwa Tatula, Tatula CT, and Tatula CT Type R, and Zillion. I have multiples of all these reels. Love the Tatulas. I really don't want to dunk any of my Tats in salt. So I'm in the market for a new reel (anything for new gear, right?). Was checking out loads of sub 100 dollar cylindrical reels just to use in the salt and not care about... Not very happy with the choices. So I figure ehhh. Might as well go big or go home, right? So right now I have the Lexa HD 300 picked out. I originally thought why not go with the 400 for the whopping extra 100 yards of line capacity... But here's the point of this thread... Do I need that capacity? According to the internet, this reel holds about 250 yards of 30 pound braid, and considering the reel has under 30 pounds of drag, I don't see why I would need to go any higher than 30 pounds for open water. Maybe if I want to try to hit some pier or bridge snook, then I'd have to step it up to 50 or 65 pound I guess? TL:DR In any case, how many yards can a fish under 100 pounds drag off the spool? Is 250 or even just 200 yards enough line for the ocean? I have never fished for any saltwater species and if I happen to land onto a big tarpon or jack, how much would they be able to peel off of the reel? It's got a whopping 25 pounds of drag, keep in mind.
  5. I'm okay with a baitcaster but the pinpoint accuracy and distance isn't there like it is with a spinning rod. I'm thinking about getting a stout spinning rod for bass fishing, like an inshore medium or medium heavy 7-0 feet or 7-6. Thought you saltwater guys might advise me on a good brand to try. I'm thinking of spending $100 or less. I'd like split handle. I have an old Penn Battle I bought at a discount store. It had lost inch or 2 of tip and been repaired. Played with it yesterday and it'll launch a lure. That's what got me thinking.
  6. I am looking for a hybrid that will fish well in salt and freshwater. I fish out of a kayak and have used freshwater reels and as long as I wash them off every time and service them 2-3 times a year I am ok but wonder if the saltwater reels will hold up better. I do inshore fishing here on the west coast for calico bass and yellowtail. Actually a shimano reel repairman suggested that I use spinning gear for my ocean fishing in that the saltwater does not enter the gears as easily. So for the heavier fishing I have been doing that. What I want is bass reels that I can fish in fresh and salt. Any recommendations?
  7. As I'm waiting on parts orders to complete my final two ambassadeur 2500c's, I started looking into maybe converting my revo 3 premier and stx into the elite 7 and 8 gear sets, respectively. It wasn't until the elite 7/8 became available on USDM that I finally got my hands on the schematics and noticed that like the revo 3 inshore, the main gear can hold the two metal click washers. It's all personal preference, but I love the way my revo 3 inshore's drag clicks like the old school ambassadeur c's and 1-3600c's. I know the yoke holder is the same across all the revos and that the mgx/ltx/mgxtreme/alt gearboxes are different than that of the s,sx,stx, and premier. All I'd really have to do for my premier (7.1) and stx (8.0) is just order the elite7/inshore 7.1 main gear, elite8 main gear, and the clicker washers involved. I could also dremel or mill my current gears to hold the clicker washers, but that's way too bold. Just wanted to share my thoughts with anyone else on here that has played around with upgrading and parts swapping their revos. I haven't stepped into JDM custom parts for my revo3's, but have done parts swapping with same gen models and lew's speed spool parts. I could talk all day about ambassadeurs and revos. Anyways, please share your thoughts, questions, revo/ambassadeur pics, or just chime in. I'll also share my revo/ambassadeur recipes as well. This MD rain and projected 60 degree weather should open some pockets soon enough. This fool is going to find some storm water ponds tomorrow. Haha.
