  1. Hey guys! wondering if any of you guys have any experience with the lews crappie baitcaster WMR5. I'm currently looking for a Ul baitcaster for ice fishing applications. sadly, i havent found anything exept this reel. i know the SLX might be a good contender for this aswell but scared of the line guide being small and freezing over. Any other ideas of brands that make the smallest baitcasters? Thanks-
  2. I'm looking to buy some rods and reels for ice fishing. Seeing as how I've never ice fished before I don't know how much thought I need to put into buying the "correct" rods and reels. Ideally I'd like about 3-4 rods each for different species or different applications. I really like Fenwick's regular rods so I think I'm going to buy rods from them. I've got a couple picked out for bass to trout to panfish. My question lies in reel selection. Do I have to consider gear ratios (retrieve speed) as much as I do in regular fishing reels. Like normally, if I'm flippin' and pitchin' in the summer I like a fast gear ratio for a quick retrieve, which provides the ability for rapid presentations. Seeing as ice fishing is essentially only vertical jigging, does gear ratio matter in the same regard? Is it based more on species? For example, if I'm fishing for trout would I need something that can reel faster in case they swim directly towards me, Vs. fishing for panfish where I might not need to bring in line as quickly? Does gear ratio even matter? What brands are good and reliable? Geek out, the more detailed and opinionated reply you can give, the better!
  3. So I’ve gone out once a day (for at least 3 hours) the last 4 days. All the ponds around me are still partially/totally frozen. For the ones that aren’t totally frozen I’ve been throwing jigs to the deepest spots of the pond, or at least the deepest spots I can cast to and I’ve had no luck at all. Not even a bite. It’s honestly really discouraging and I’m about to hang up my hat and wait until it gets warmer out. It sucks getting all bundled up and standing in the cold snow and wind to just get frustrated. What do you guys think, should I just wait until the water warms??
  4. In Virginia, we've experienced the Polar Vortex, going from low 40's to low 20's and getting between 6-8" of snow. All of my multi-acre bass pond spots are frozen, however by today temps jump to the mid 40's and by Friday (when I hope to get out on the water) they'll be in mid to upper 60's. While I realize there have been many posts about post cold front fishing... this is more specific to Virginia and to a 40 degree swing. I know the water will still be chilly (prob low 40's) but will the bass be shallow and sun-bathing after all this cold shifts to warm? If so... what would you guys recommend throwing? Squarebills? Jigs? Im supposed to fish a 50 acre awesome pond Friday and want to be prepared. Thanks!
  5. Hey, I'm from Brazil and I'll be in Charlottesville on December/13 and 14 and while there I would love to try some bass or trout fishing. Pardon me if this question will sound stupid, but I wonder if is it possible to fish at Mint Springs Park or Chris Greene Lake Park on those dates? I wonder if is the winter a concern? Also, can I fly fish trout at Mint Springs without a boat? I'll probably record some footage for my father's Brazilian TV Fishing Show (www.pescadinamica.com.br), so if anyone wants to partner with me I'd love to record with you, specially that it will be my first time fishing on the US. Thank you!
