  1. Been having issues with the cheap stock hooks on my RES’s straightening out, especially after I’ve caught a few fish. Pretty sure the 1/2oz comes with size 4 hooks, and I’ve read that KVD will go up to a 2 when he swaps them out. I usually throw the 1/4oz model. Not sure if they’re size 4 or 6. What size would you guys recommend on 1/4oz RES’s? I was planning on using the Mustad KVD triple grips, but if anyone has any other suggestions I’m open to trying a few brands out. Thanks in advance for any help!
  2. Relatively new at fishing, been totally enjoying a successful ultralight setup for panfish, but when I land a small (fits in palm of my hand) bluegill, crappie, white perch many times they wiggle right off the hook, onto the ground, before I can get my hand on them. This also suggests I may be tearing their lips. I'm concerned about damage to the fish from both lip tear and flopping around on the ground after coming loose. Does this suggest the hook is the wrong size? Lure is a Trout Magnet (troutmagnet.com), I think it's a size 8 hook, 1/64 oz. Tried the slightly bigger Crappie Magnet (think it's a size #4, 1/16 oz) but not as many catches. What size hook might be best for these panfish (where "best" means ability to catch and release them with minimal damage to the fish)? Combo is St. Croix PS56ULF2 5'6" ultralight, fast action with Shimano Ultegra 1000 series spinning reel, 4 lb test mono. Reel feels a bit heavy for the rod but otherwise happy with this setup.
  3. i know you should closely match the hook diameter to the thickness of the line you are using, right? because too thin a line and too thick a hook, you can easily break the line or knot. and vise-versa you can straighten or unbend the hook. my question is, i use 6 or 8lb (i dont remember) silverline co-polymer line on my 6'6ft medium light spinning rod. with a shimano sahara 2500 reel. i like to use finesse worms and senkos, drop shotting and no hooking wacky rig etc etc.. what hooks are o.k. to use with such thin line? i have 1 o/t offset worm hooks, and size 2, 4 and 6 octopus and baitholder hooks... are these okay? or is there a super thin wire hook for such line?
  4. Fellas, I'm looking to replace the stock hooks and split rings that have come on the Smithwick Suspending Rattlin Rogues. I know the hooks come in a size 6 so no worries there. In terms of split rings, does anyone know what size Smithwick uses? From what I've tried to dig up, it seems most of the bass lures on the market use size 2 split rings. Also, any specific brand/style of split ring and hooks that I should keep an eye out for? Thanks in advance. -Alan
