  1. I'm looking to buy some rods and reels for ice fishing. Seeing as how I've never ice fished before I don't know how much thought I need to put into buying the "correct" rods and reels. Ideally I'd like about 3-4 rods each for different species or different applications. I really like Fenwick's regular rods so I think I'm going to buy rods from them. I've got a couple picked out for bass to trout to panfish. My question lies in reel selection. Do I have to consider gear ratios (retrieve speed) as much as I do in regular fishing reels. Like normally, if I'm flippin' and pitchin' in the summer I like a fast gear ratio for a quick retrieve, which provides the ability for rapid presentations. Seeing as ice fishing is essentially only vertical jigging, does gear ratio matter in the same regard? Is it based more on species? For example, if I'm fishing for trout would I need something that can reel faster in case they swim directly towards me, Vs. fishing for panfish where I might not need to bring in line as quickly? Does gear ratio even matter? What brands are good and reliable? Geek out, the more detailed and opinionated reply you can give, the better!
  2. Hi there, I'm looking to get some expert advice on crankbait rods and reels for largemouth bass. I've been fishing for a while, but inconsistently- from a time commitment perspective and species. I'm going to buy a new rod and reel specifically for crankbaits and have been doing a fair amount of research (maybe too much) to inform my decision on rod selection. Most of the forum questions, debates, etc seem to focus on brands (Dobyns, St. Croix, G Loomis and many more) and less on specific qualities/specifications of rods. From what I can tell and for my purposes (I fish on lakes where the max depth is 20' in some places; don't fish rivers; lures are mostly under 1 oz; and I'd like some versatility to be able to throw the occasional spinnerbait, lipless crank or popper lures), the ideal crankbait (spinning) rod appears to be a 7' medium power and fast action and either graphite or glass. A reel's gear ratio seems to range from 5:1 to 6.3:1, but since I mostly fish in shallow waters that are under 12' deep I should probably go with the 6.3:1 gear ratio. Does that sound about right to folks? Any additional insights/considerations are greatly appreciated too. For what it's worth, I'd like to spend under $250, which is a decent chunk of change, but I'd rather buy 1 great rod (for now) and not waste time and money. This leads me to my next, but less pressing question- if a rod meets all the necessarily qualifications/specs for it's intended technique, why spend a ton of money on a brand? Thank you very much, el Largo
  3. What gear ratio would be best for crankbaits that dive in the 10-15 ft. I’m not sure if I should get 6 or 5 speed. What would you suggest?
  4. Hello guys, I'm going to focus on frogging, pitching and flipping this year and am new to baitcasting. I wanted to know if a 6:6:1 (26 ipt) or 7:3:1 (31ipt) would be best for these applications. Thanks, Sean
  5. Have you guys heard of double gear ratio spinning reels? Something flashed in my head when i first heard of that. Does it mean that we don’t need to take 2 or 3 reel & rod combos with us when go outside fishing? Will the two ratio both match one specific action & power rod? Seems to be reasonable to adjust to high gear ratio when searching the area to find where fish are holding, and to low gear ratio when getting bites. What’s your thoughts of it?
  6. Hey guys, I'm looking at a new specific reel that only comes in 7.3:1, and is 30 inches per crank, could I use this for swimjigs, chatterbaits and spinnerbaits or should I just find a 6.3:1 instead, another question; what gear ratio should I use for belly weighted swimbaits like rage swimmers?? Thanks
  7. Hey guys! I am getting my gear ready for this spring and have one last rod I would like to put together. I have recently purchased some soft paddle tail swimbaits(gambler big ez) and some luckycraft smasher and big smasher hard swimbaits. I am looking for a suggestion on line and gear ratio to set up a swimbait rod, possibly looking to purchase a new reel. I have a 7' Kistler Magnesium 2 MH Fast Action rod I was planning on using. Any suggestions?
  8. I have heard people say that their baitcsting reel has 2 gear ratios. How is that possible? I thought reels can only 1 gear ratio. How can you tell if you have 2 gear ratios?
  9. So I messed up I caught my biggest bass ever a 3 pounder and got bass fever. I subsequently bought a new reel a Shimano Curado 200i 6:3:1 and while I was waiting for it to come in I found an Abu Garcia Revo SX 6:4:1with an Abu Garcia Vendetta 6'6 medium rod. Now I already had a Lews Carbon Fire in the same gear ratio. I am new to bass fishing but am wondering if I should try to sell two of these and just keep one in this ratio. If so which one should I keep. Thanks for helping.
  10. Sorry if this is a dumb question. I do not know a lot about how reels operate. I have one and really like it, but I want to speed it up and use it for a flipping and pitching reel since it re-engages the spool when you depress the thumb button. The 6.3:1 is decent, but I am curious if it can be increased?
  11. This past winter was bad for me; caught the bug- Ambassadeur bug. Anyways, I'll finally cut off Ambassadeur fleabay buys to tonight's 2500c bid. My question is this, which reel foot stamps offer which gear ratio. I've got one 76, a 77, and now a 75. Now am I led to believe that the 2500c iar chrome schematic and parts order page on ereplacementparts provides the 5.+ gear ratio? Thanks in advance for any replies.
  12. I'm looking at getting another Lew's. I already have a 6.4:1 TP. The 7:1 only gives you 3 more inches per turn. Other than being a tad better at allowing you to catch up with the fish as he runs toward the boat, how does this help you? Wondering if this is technique specific? I've always used 6.4:1 bait casters and don't completely understand in what situations the 7:1 may help me. Generally, even if the difference is more than 3 IPT, what techniques do you use the 7:1 reels for?
