  1. Hi guys, I fish the Tidal Basin in D.C. quite a bit and there is a healthy population of gar, however I am at a loss on how to catch them. I always fish for catfish when I'm there and I get bit a lot without any hookups and I'm sure gar are the culprit. The only time I've seen them caught is by accident when the lines gets tangled up in their mouths, I've been brainstorming for quite some time now and I think I've come up with a solution. I was thinking in wrapping my cut bait in yarn or twine so when the gar eats it it'll get stuck in the yarn. I'm looking for other people's opinions on this and to see if anyone has tried this with success!
  2. I’m going to go fish the hocking river in Ohio Friday and I always see a bunch of gar and want to try and catch one what’s the best lures to use for them?
  3. Okay where to began... I have been working on a line of gar baits. Needlenose Gar not alligator gar. So far I know that these gar are always near the surface and love hot sunny days. I have caught them on rattle traps, but mostly on topwater type baits. The best bait I have found so far is a kvd square bill crank bait with the bill modified to prevent it from diving. I think it's the oversized treble hooks which I curve back in almost circle hook style. I do that because I have noticed that gar don't get hooked but do get the hooks pinched on there face or or the wire leader goes in their mouth and the big body of the kvd is to big to come through it's lips. Although they bite it very often the hookup ratio is still 6/7 to 1. Does anyone have a lure that has a better hookup ratio? I have some Louisiana boys at work that are requesting them. Jay
  4. I know they are environmentally destructive and admittedly destructive, but I find it hard to believe all the hype about their destructive prowess when they swim with larger muskies and alligator gar. WHats your experiance with them, do they they have predators here in the states, and whats your opinion of them.
  5. I just moved to winter haven with my tackle for a couple months and I would like to team up with someone to target some big freshwater fish like carp, catfish, and gar, and maybe Big Bass too. I havent had much luck trying different lakes on my own!
