  1. Hey so i will soon have both combos and i was wondering on opinions on which one is better/ like more in YOUR opinion, i know both are really good especially for the price, but i just want to know what other people would prefer (side note: i got the slx combo for 130ish and the fuego combo for 180ish), lastly would you say for the fuego combo it is worth the extra 50 in my case (it looks better in my opinion, but idk about performance)
  2. Hi Everyone, I am looking at getting my first casting set up. I currently have a spinning pflueger president 6530 on a 6'6 ugly stik elite medium (super smooth and light). I am fishing 95% of the time in my pond in my backyard which is about 30 yrds x 30 yrds, so not too big. I found a great deal and bought a Diawa Tatula CT 7:3:1 for $90 so I am wanting to pair it up with a rod that will give me a variety along side my spinning set up. I want to be around the $100 range for the rod. From what I have read it seems the two main contenders in that price point are Dobyns and St. Croix. However, I hear the Dobyns runs light on power and St. Croix is heavy. I will say I ordered a Abu Garcia Blue Max (Walmart) baitcaster for around $70 and did not like the set up; I ended up returning it. It was 7' med heavy. The rod felt very heavy and stiff (not sure the model exactly). I want to avoid that. Like I said, my pond is not too big and i will most be throwing stuff up to about 3/8, maybe 3/4, doubt any 1 oz stuff. I am not a fan of the longer rods so I would stay in the 6'6 range preferably. I just want some advise on the powers and what you guys think. I want enough separation from my spinning that it doesn't feel like the same rod but also I don't want something that reminds me of that Abu Blue Max (heavy and stiff). Ultimately, would it be best to find that next level rod with the Dobyns Fury 663C (M/H), Dobyns Fury 664C (H), or the St. Croix Mojo Bass Med (since it runs heavier; the heavy may be too heavy)? Any feedback, experience, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, let me know if you have a Tatula and how you like it. Thanks, Adam
  3. Hey there, first post on BR. I've come here for more info than I can even comprehend so I figured it was time to sign up. I'm just getting into baitcasters (grew up walleye fishing), and I just received my Colt 705CB in the mail. I was planning to use it as a crank/jerkbait rod. But I feel like it's a little too soft for me as i'm trying to use it with other treble hooked baits as well and not just cranking. I read somewhere that Dobyns CB rods are rated on a crankbait scale and not your normal power scale. My question is will a 703c (MH/fast) be more fitting for multiple treble hook presentations as opposed to that parabolic crankbait style the 705cb (MH/MF) has. Thanks in advance! Also - plan on picking up a Fury 704c for jigs, texas rigs, spinnerbaits. good idea? EDIT: I’ve called dobyns and unfortunately for me all the guy are at the classic and can’t get back to me for a few days
  4. I’m gonna be picking up a new combo here soon specifically for spinnerbaits jigs and Texas Rigs and didn’t know what to get so i came on here and found what seems to be the perfect rod which is the Dobyns Fury 703c because it’s made for exactly what I need it for and I was wondering what reel I should put on it around the 120 mark is my budget for the reel and also I was wondering whats you guys think of the rod also how sensitive is it? Thank you Edit-As stated below the reel with likely be a tatula 100 but I’m still open to suggestions thank you guys for helping.
  5. I’m looking for a new casting rod for all around use around a 7ft MH. I was thinking about either a Dobyns Fury, a St Croix Mojo Bass, or a G Loomis E6X which I could get for around $110 with the varsity shimano program. Can anyone give me some insight to which rod performs the best? I’m open to other rods too if you have suggestions. Thanks
  6. I am looking for spinning rod for my President reel. I am between the Dobyns Fury 703SF or the Mojo Bass. From what I read, they seem comparable, maybe the furys action is rated higher then it seems and the mojo's action is rated lower then it seems...that is what i got out of my research. I mainly texas rig senkos. I can get the fury for $105 to my door and the mojo bass for $110 to my door. Any more thoughts? thanks Im leaning dobyns cuz of their lifetime warranty....and i already have a 734c...so matching is nice, but a diversified portfolio is good too...
  7. I'm thinking about picking up a shorter rod that could double for short casts with spinnerbaits in close quarters and walking topwater baits. Anybody have experience with the new St. Croix Bass X 6'6" MHF, Dobyns Fury 663, or 664?
  8. I recently purchased a few Dobyns rods (Fury, Champion) all of which are great and feel amazing. Very happy with my purchase the one that really is the most surprising is my Fury 735C. I initially bought this particular rod and intended to use it for what it recommends on the rod frogging, small swimbaits, and flipping/pitching. I was pleasantly surprised as to how much flex the tip had especially for being a Mag Heavy. The rod is 7'3" Mag Heavy power Fast action and is rated for 1/4- 1 1/2 oz lures. At first I thought there's no way a rod this stout can handle 1/4 oz but I was not intending on using it for lures that light anyway so I did not pay attention. After getting the rod however I feel that not only is it stout enough to get fish out of some thick stuff as you would be fishing when fishing a frog but if the time calls for it and I know the fish are in there but won't bite on the bigger baits I feel confident to size down and actually do some "finesse" fishing in the the thick stuff, not using light wire hooks or anything but a smaller bait and a small weight. This rod not only has the backbone you would expect with the Mag Heavy power label it carries but also has the tip to throw some lighter 1/4 Texas rigs accurately and a good distance as well. The Fury series has not disappointed yet with its feel and action. Same also applies to the Champion XP series. After handling the rods it is safe to say that yes the power does feel less then what it says. But I wouldn't say a whole power lower like some people have said I would say it's half a step down maybe even less then that (the champion series however feels spot on with its power rating). The rods feel good in the hand I personally added some U40 cork seal as I like the feel it gives me but the naked cork as I like to call it they use feels great, balance well, and are sensitive which the fact that the gods are comfortable and balanced just adds to the sensitivity. The actions are great not to stiff and not to "whippy" and the warranty is on par with the famous St. Croix warranty. Dobyns rods have a No hassle replacement warranty just send your broken rod to them with a check Fury $50 sierra $60 Champion $70 and they will send out a new one if they find that the rod broke because of defects in materials or workmanship they will refund the check. They also have an upgrade program to trade up to a higher level rod. The customer service is friendly and will answer all your questions even help you pick out which rods will be best for your applications. I even talked to Mr.Dobyns himself when trying to pick out which rods would be best. I hope this little review helps answer some of the questions about Dobyns rods that have been popping up lately in the forums that even I myself had about these rods. Thanks to all the forum member that kept recommending Dobyns to me I'm glad I went with them
  9. I am trying to find another rod to finish/round out my arsenal and im trying to decide between the dobyns fury 703c Medium Heavy fast or 735c. Mag Heavy Fast the rods i already have are abu garcia ike series 6'4" Medium moderate Dobyns FR703SF (Fury) Medium Fast Dobyns 704C XP (Champion XP) Heavy Fast Dobyns 705CB (Fury) Medium Heavy Mod.Fast
  10. Hi, I am looking at expanding my limited arsenal. The main application would be for small soft plastic swimbaits (such as the keitech swing impact fat or the strike king caffeine shad) but it would be even better if I could use the same rod for all kind of moving baits, including treble hooked baits. Therefore, I was thinking the FR 705CB might be a good choice. I like the idea of using a moderate fast for a moving single hook presentation (paddle tails, chatterbaits, swimjigs, spinnerbaits, etc) and it would seem like a happy medium that could cater to crankbaits as well. However, on their stie, Dobyns recommends the 734C for buzzbaits, small swimbaits and spinnerbaits. I currently own a 6'8" MXF Spinning, a 7'0" MHF Spinning and a 7'1" MHXF Casting which is another reason I leaning towards a modfast. My idea was to dedicate the 6'8" to dropshotting/shakyhead/flukes, the 7'0" to senkos (wacky or t-rigs), the 7'1" to jigs/t-rigs/c-rigs and the new rod to moving baits (although 90% of the time that would be a swing impact fat or a caffeine shad). Any thoughts / recommendations? Am I going to regret a ModFast for this type of application? Thanks For what it's worth, I am also considering the following rods in the same price range and action (modfast): - Falcon BRC-5-176 BuCoo SR 7'6" MH MF (listed as such on TW however on the falcon site the BRC-5-176 is MH M which scares me a little) - Fenwick HMG 7'2" M MF - No8tackle Blackout 7'3" M MF (lure rating is a little on the low side) - St. Croix Bass X 7'4" MH MF I know the Bass X is SCII and as such everyone says it is worth spending the extra money for the SCIII however I don't think I need the utmost sensitivity when fishing moving baits and my budget is pretty much hard cap'd at $110.
  11. I am thinking of getting a new rod. For now it would serve as an all-purpose heavy-duty rod. I will fish it with a Quantum Smoke 7.3:1 or a Cabala's Arachnid 8.1:1. I have 30 pound Suffix 832 now, but may change to 50 lb. I would like to become a better texas rig fisherman, so I will be using it for texas rigs 1/4 - 3/4 of an ounce. I will drag that along the bottom, and flip it into cover. Which rod is more sensitive? Which model should I go with? Keep in mind that I may end up getting another Heavy rod at some point. Thanks
  12. I recently ordered a doybns fury 745C. After I ordered it, I realized that tackle ware house lists the handle length as 14 inches. Is this correct for the 735C? This seems very short to me for a mag-heavy rod.
  13. Hey guys, So I'm going to get right into it and make this short. I want a crankin' stick that can handle squarebill's, 6-10' medium divers, and traps. The two rods I have narrowed it down to is the Duckett Micro Magic Pro Crankbait rod 7' Medium power, moderate taper, and the Dobyns Fury 7' Med-Heavy Mod-fast action Taper. Which one would you chose. Any input is appreciated thanks!
  14. I've narrowed it down to the rod I want but what specs should I choose for frogging? It's either going to be a 7'3" med-heavy, heavy, or mag heavy. Thanks
  15. Would someone please explain to me how it is worth it to me a,fresh off the boat newbie, that spending 100 dollars as opposed to spending 50 dollars on a Rod is going to A) make me a better angler and B ) how it is going to make me catch more fish. Again I'm not talking aboutYOU who is an experienced angler, I'm talking about me, a person as far as fishing is concerned, knows nothing about nothing. And please don't tell me "if you just spend 10 more dollars...." How is that going to help me? I don't mind spending 100 dollars but as of right now if it is really not going to get me to catch more fish why should I? I know that the Fury and the Ghost are good rods but if my skills and sense of touch are not there yet why? It's like a golf swing, if your swing is not groves to the point that it repeats itself time and time again it makes no sense in spending 500 dollars on a driver. Groove the swing first, then go get that bright shiny new toy. Hoping for some insight
  16. Hey guys I'm looking to get either the Dobyns Fury or Savvy 734C (or both eventually) for Florida grass fishing swim jigs and skinny dippers. Which one do y'all think is better for the money?? I know the Fury is great for the price, but would the Savvy be worth the extra $70?
  17. Looking to purchase this rod specifically for fishing hollow bodied frogs and want your opinions and recommendations.. Does it perform like a typical extra fast or is it slower like many of the Dobyns rods? Mag heavy too much power or just right?
