  1. I'm wondering if anyone likes and still uses the original Scum Frog? I got back into frog fishing two seasons ago, and had fair success with the Scum Frog. I've bent the hooks up a little, and sharpened them good. Still, like others have posted, I've missed a good number of strikes. Frog fishing is addicting, and frustrating at the same time. I can't blame the missed strikes on the Scum Frog or my tackle. Hopefully this season will be better with the hookup ratio. Do we have some here on BR that like the original Scum Frog?
  2. Hello guys, looking for any information anybody may have on using a Saint Croix 7 foot two piece medium heavy premier musky rod for a punch rod. I have to fly every time I bass fish because I live in Alaska, so a two piece rod is super important to me and getting a lot harder to find these days. I’m taking a trip to the California Delta this J i’m taking a trip to the California Delta this June, I fished in that area last September, there was tons of heavy floating matt i’ve never been a frog or punch fisherman generally because I don’t get to fish bass that early in the year. But I’m going to do it this year. Two piece rods are a must for me so much easier flying. Can’t wait to learn this new tactic just need to get the right rods for the job.
  3. I need a stiffer rod for fishing the thick stuff next year. I'm basically set on the Expride 7'3" Extra Heavy, as I prefer shorter rods, and this seems to be the best rod I can find for what I want to do. I'd love a 7 foot XH but alas, you don't always get what you want. I am curious about the Dobyns Champion Extreme line, though, and I'd love the 746C. It's just $70 more than the Expride which is already up there in price. Assuming 20% off both rods, which one should I go for? Anything that would make the Dobyns a better buy at $349 vs Expride at $279? Lighter weight? Better warranty? Better balance? Thanks!
  4. I am about to purchase a new reel for topwater frogs but im torn on which gear ratio. I know you want a high gear ratio but im not sure if 7.5:1 or 8.3:1. I wanted to get some opinions if 8.3:1 may be too fast or if it has worked good for anyone. Thanks
  5. I am planning on buying a baitcast setup for frogging in the spring/summer. Any suggestions on rods+reels? $150 range or less for rod and for reel.I am leaning towards the dobyns fury magheavy flippin stick and the bps pq2. I'm not brand specific just has to be a flippin stick 7'-7'3 and a reel thats solid, has at leas 6:1 GR, and preferably the simpler to operate the better. some other reels i would consider -h20 mettle (is the gen 2 as good as the first?) -Abu orra sx -shimano caenan
  6. Hi everyone, Yesterday I decided to try targeting some largemouth on a predominantly smallmouth populated lake. I found that the fish were holding under floating mats of vegetation that had been blown into existing structure, whether it be timber, lily pads, weed beds, or docks. The water depths varied from 1' to about 6' and as usual some of the areas had lead in cover while others did not. My first choice in lures was a frog and it really helped me locate fish in the mats that I found myself fishing. The bass would usually blow up on the lure but weren't able inhale the whole bait. I think a lot of this had to do with the thickness of the mats I was fishing. I would follow up with a punching rig and proceed to bring in whatever fish were located under the mat which made the day quite enjoyable. My query is this; when fishing mats situated in deeper water, like 4' or deeper, has anyone ever tried a reaction bait like a jerkbait or spinnerbait along the edge, and if so, were you successful? Or do you just go straight to the punching rig? Normally I'm not adverse to try different things but I didn't have a big window to fish so stuck with what was working until the evening jerkbait bite picked up. Thanks in advance for any feedback people can provide.
  7. I'm pretty sure like many of you one of my favorite types of fishing to do in the summer is frog fishing. I'm curious to see what peoples opinions are on clear or transparent frogs and when and where would be the best times to use them. I just thought this could give some pointers to everyone being that I personally don't know when they should be used!
  8. Hey guys, I've been looking at getting a rod to fish in heavier cover. I would like to use it for even more applications than it's intended for because I'm not really one to give a pole one specific job. I was looking at the kistler Helium 3 7 foot heavy and was wondering if any of you have used it and what you thought. Did you think it was to flimsy or did it have enough backbone to get the job done? Any input will be great thanks guys.
  9. So I was thinking about buying a bait caster and throwing some 50lbs braid on it and using it to fish with frogs. What bait caster would be best for this?
  10. I'm looking to get a new setup and I was originally looking at the dobyns savvy 766 and pairing that with the lews super duty reel. But I just came across the gloomis e6x series and wondered if it would be better than the dobyns. For me I want the lightest gear without losing too much power for this price range. So I wasn't sure if anyone on here had fished either of these rods. Now when it comes to a reel I also discovered the 13 *** and C reels from one of my friends. I love it, it is so lightweight and smooth and I'm going to get one for my jigging and plastics rod. But my main concern is the durability of the reel. I'm going to be using heavy braid (60lb) and I don't know if the 13 reels can handle it. I know the super duty can because that's what's it's made for but the super duty reels are on the heavier side at 8 oz. The reason I'm so sceptical is because I had braid destroy my drag on my Abu Garcia revo SX and I don't want the same to happen if I get the 13 reel. Would love any opinions and suggestions. Thanks

  12. I play to buy a combo for heavy applications such as frogging, flipping, pitching, punching, swimbaits and jigs. I plan to buy a Berkley Lightning rod as well as a todo 7:1:1 reel to pair with it. So here are my questions. 1. Should I buy a 7' Medium Heavy rod or a 7'6" Heavy rod for the applications above? ^^^^^^^ (I have read on Tackle Warehouse that a lot of people like 7' MH rods for frogging and flipping) 2. What reel should I buy to pair with it? I was thinking one of these reels. - Abu Garcia Pro Max - Lews Tournament MG Speed Spool (Already have one on my Texas rig rod) - Lews Super Duty Speed Spool - Lews Tournament Pro Speed Spool Whaddya think???? Thanks guys.
  13. I am going to purchase a St. Croix Premier Casting rod in the near future and I am wondering in anyone has any experience using this rod for frogging. I want a 7 footer but I'm debating between a medium-heavy or heavy (both fast action) because I am worried that the heavy might be too stiff to throw frogs far enough. Any ideas are much appreciated.
