  1. This post is a result of my indecision that lead to stressful overthinking. When I ask the following question, consider these factors: I fish one of the shallow finger lakes with lots of vegetation mainly eurasian milfoil, the best places to flip are in the milfoil and under boat docks, the water is ultra clear in the morning and throughout the day progressively gets greener (a light stain caused by gloeotrichia rising from bottom), flipping baits that I’ve used and had moderate success with: D-Bomb, Baby D-Bomb, Pit Boss, Bronco Bug, Sweet Beaver. I like one that has little to no action and glides like a traditional beaver, as well as one that has some more action to it but has less action than a craw style bait. The question: not including craws and tubes; if you could only choose 2 different beaver style baits each in 3 different colors to cover all the conditions listed above, what would you choose? And why?
  2. I’ve been having success flipping docks and lighter cover lay downs with a 1/2oz Missile Baits Ike’s Mini Flip Jig and some I tied myself on 7/16oz BOSS Finesse Flip jig heads with chunk trailers. Does the 744 have enough power or would the 735 be a better fit??
  3. Hello, I was simply curious about the specific differences between these two P5 rods. I'm trying to decide between the two as my jig and Texas-rigged soft plastics. For anyone who has it, what would you say is the ACTUAL lure weight range in which each of these rods excels (if you could please say the total weight, i.e., jig + trailer, etc...). I am also planning to purchase a P5 Bait Finesse and a P5 Windbuster, so the baits that this can cover may also have to be taken into account. I plan on using the BF for all around finesse plastics and finesse jigs, the WB for drop-shot/free rig/small jerks and small cranks/light topwater, and the TS or X-Bites for jigs/Texas-rig soft plastics. I will say that I plan on fishing cover, shallow water, docks (skipping*** and pitching***). Lastly, I do everything other than punching, throwing large swimbaits or glide baits, and heavy top-water (mainly finesse plastics, fb/compact/finesse jigs and other bottom-contact like drop-shot and T-rig). Will these 3 rods cover all those techniques? Thank you in advance, I apologize for asking so many questions. I tried to be as concise as possible, but I have been looking for answers to these questions without much success.
  4. Hi guys, so with the black Friday coming, I was looking to buy a new combo for punching/flipping. For the rod, I was looking at the megabass levante Aklys rod or the daiwa tatula heavy flipping rod, do you have any insight on any of them? As for the reel, I tried the tatula line last summer and I loved it, so the tatula elite p/f seemed like a good option. What do you think? Do you have other recommendations? Much appreciated.
  5. Hey guys, I'm looking for a solid and versatile reel for my punching set up, any suggestions? Specifically, I'm ONLY interested in a baitcasting reel that has a "flipping switch". These seem to be impossible to find, but an example of a reel with a flipping switch is the Lew's Super Duty G. Also, I heard that Abu Garcia's black max and silver max have them in specific models. Please help me and list some suggestions, I've scoured the internet and can't find many options. Finding a reel with a flipping switch is my main concern. What do you guys know (P.S. This is unimportant but im throwing it on a 7'3 Okuma Scott Martin Signature TCS Casting Rod Heavy, Fast action because I like the way Scott martin fishes and I'm using it in a kayak so i can't really work a legit 7'11 Ex Heavy flippin stick.) What are the best baitcasters with a flipping switch option? Idc if it's $20 or $400 Thanks!!!!!!
  6. Hey BR Here is a quick video for keeping your lure/jig skirts together over time and for overall effectiveness.
  7. Hey BR, I got to spend some time over on Lake Fork the week before Easter and wanted to share the highlights from those trips. Good Fishing! JN
  8. Hi BR, Recently found this footage that I lost and happy to have found again. We are fishing a Power plant lake shortly after the new year where we had a great time so I wanted to share with you all. thanks for watching! JN
  9. Hey BR, Here is part 2 of the January fishing trip with Lou from Beyond the Bounds. Fun day and caught bass we believe we’re on beds in January. Thanks for watching! JN
  10. Recently ordered some gear from and they included a free spool of 25lb fluoro with my order. I use 10 lb and 15 lb fluoro for most applications, with the exception of 50 lb braid for my frogging, and pitching into heavy cover. My question is what should I use the 25 lb for? Maybe a leader on my flipping/pitching set up? Seems like it’d be a bit too big for anything else. Do any of you have experience using fluoro that heavy?
  11. I need a stiffer rod for fishing the thick stuff next year. I'm basically set on the Expride 7'3" Extra Heavy, as I prefer shorter rods, and this seems to be the best rod I can find for what I want to do. I'd love a 7 foot XH but alas, you don't always get what you want. I am curious about the Dobyns Champion Extreme line, though, and I'd love the 746C. It's just $70 more than the Expride which is already up there in price. Assuming 20% off both rods, which one should I go for? Anything that would make the Dobyns a better buy at $349 vs Expride at $279? Lighter weight? Better warranty? Better balance? Thanks!
  12. Looking for a good pitching and flipping baitcasting rod and reel for jigs for bass. Around $150.00 do yall have any suggestions anything would be much appreciated, thanks.
  13. What’s an all around heavy rod for flipping, pitching, heavy cover punching, heavy cover in general, frog etc im considering a Daiwa SVF AGS XHeavy frog rod 7’4” thoughts? Reviews? Other consideration on a great rod even save good money or am I in the right ball park for that rod? I’m not a extreme fanatic fisherman where I need different rod for different setup. As long as I can cut and retie, I am fine.
  14. Lately I’ve been looking at getting some tungsten, but is it really worth it? Pros: smaller, heavy, more feel. Cons: much more expensive. That is just some of the info I’ve been given on tungsten. What are your thoughts about the debate?
  15. Been looking to add a sub 2 oz swimbait rod to the setup. And since i prefer not to take out more than 2 rods at a time, figure i should make it work as my flipping rod as well. What im currently thinking is a 7'6" Dobyns Sierra H/F with a Shimano Curado 200k. Thoughts on that setup? also for the Curado if anyone has experience/thoughts on going with the 7.4:1 or the 8.5:1 tips would be appreciated. And as always if you have something else you think would do just as well ill take the advice. Price wise I'd like to keep the combo around or under $350 though obviously less is all good by me. Thanks in advance
  16. In need of some advice! Ive been fishing at a pond that has heavy moss just about everywhere I look. Instead of fishing around it, I thought I’d try to fish in it! Overall the pond is pretty shallow. Where I’m noticing the most cover, the water depth range is 3ft to 10ft. I picked out a rod (G Loomis GLX 954c FPR). The only jigs in my aresanal are siebert jigs but own no flipping jigs. I know I need something heavy enough to get through the thick mats of moss but considering how shallow the water is, I don’t want to go too heavy so I maximize the presentation on the fall. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
  17. So last Christmas I was bought myself a brand new Flippin’ n Pitchin’ setup. It was my first rod that I bought for a specific technique and above all it was my very first Baitcasting Rod/Reel setup ever! Well I haven’t had the opportunity to use this rod how I imagined I’d be using it until yesterday. I started out yesterday morning casting spinners and lipless cranks around some local ponds, caught a few dinks, nothing even remotely big but still nice. But once it hit around Noon - 1 o’clock ish all the fish had left the shallows and I couldn’t find anything. That’s when I pulled out my flipping and pitching setup I had been hauling around with me all day. And yah know, I have to admit, there’s something a little intimidating about purposefully chucking a lure into the branches of a big tree thatsfallen in the water. But I quickly remembered all the YouTube videos I’d seen and posts I’d read about guys pulling absolute pigs out of laydowns and I was able to convince myself that losing a soft plastic isn’t the same as losing a $5 lure and went ahead and started flippin and pitchin all the lay downs I could find. And boy and I glad I did! My first few lay downs weren’t super productive but I’m still rusty at getting my bait in the water quiet enough not to spook any fish and I basically had to stand on the tree that I was pitching to because I couldn’t get a good casting angle off the bank. So I’ll attribute my lack of fish from those spots to that. But after a few not so good pitches and flips I found myself at the laydown that has taken at least 5 or 6 of my lures over the years from casting at it from the other side of the pond. I could see two big bass hovering around the branches of the tree and my heart immediately started racing. I tried my headrest to very quietly get into a good casting position and once I did I pitched out my T-Rigged soft plastic as quiet as I could. It landed on the trunk of the tree and immediately all of the nearby bass were super interested. I could see a few 2 pounders just hovering over my bait. I ever so slowly twitched my lure up the body of the tree, watching one of the bigger bass get closer and closer as it inspected my bait. My heart was pounding at this point. I had gotten my lure as far up the tree as I could before I had to twitch it off the side of the trunk. As my bait fell down into the deeper water, immediately the big bass rocketed down to the bottom! I held on for dear life for what I thought was about the be the most jarring bite I’ve ever gotten in my entire life!... but nothing. I was so fired up that I immediately pulled my bait right back out of the water to do the exact same sequence of events over again, but as soon as I pulled it up I had wished I left it down there for an extra second with a few good twitches. When I pulled it up I saw the bass follow it up and then swim back into the deep part of the tree once my bait broke the surface. I didn’t let that discourage me though. I pitched my bait right back out there. This was the pitch that will stick with me for a very long while, and to be honest I’m not sure when I felt the bite but all of the sudden I knew I had a head shaking largemouth bass on the end of my line and II wasn’t about to let it get away. I set the hook hard and with a grunt ripped that fish right out of the water as soon as I possibly could. The fight was short but the reward will be with me forever. I pulled up what was easily one of the biggest bass I’ve ever seen pulled out of this pond. I let out a celabratory ““Yeah!” While holding my fish and the guy across the pond from me did the same! Even he knew it was a big fish or this pond too!! Luckily I managed to snap a few pictures while trying to awkwardly hold the fish and position myself in view of my phone camera. I know this fish is only about 2 pounds (maybe) but it was still a catch I’ll always remember!
  18. Does anyone else fish flipping jigs from the bank? If so, does it seem effective? I've always just flipped them around weeds around the bank and gotten a couple bites. Would something else be a better choice for shore fishing? I've heard that KVD grew up fishing jigs from the bank.
  19. Hi All, New to the group, looking forward to getting some help. Im looking to get a new flipping/pitching rod and am looking at either the Okuma TCS 7’6” H or the similarly-spec’d Phenix Recon Elite 766 (7’6”H). THE Phenix is about 2x the cost of the TCS, so I’m wondering if it’s worth the additional investment or if anyone has any experience with either rod. I also like the Dobyns Champion series, but they are 3x of the Okuma. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.
  20. Anyone got a villain 2.0 and use it for flippin n pitching? Thinking of getting one in a 7'6" heavy fast. Reviews ?
  21. Whats your #1 soft plastic for flipping pitching or punching? (name/brand specific please)
  22. So I have a question for everyone.. how do you go about choosing weight size for jig like lures? I don't or haven't done much jig fishing so I feel like I'm completely clueless when it comes to trying to determine wherther I should choose 1/2oz 3/8oz or maybe 3/4oz jig size jigs.. the same concept for trying to figure out chatterbaits and tungsten punch weights... I'm guessing people are going to say it depends what kind of structure I'm fishing and how deep.. I have no idea how deep I am fishing usually because I have a small inflatable pontoon boat with no electronics.. but I do have some maps that I printed out on the lakes I fish and most of the time it's usually no more than 10-15ft max just because it is usually pretty shallow with lay down trees, stumps, lots of submerged vegetation Lilly pads. Also lots of various docks too. The majority of the lakes are not very big lakes but have excellent cover for hiding bass.. I'm up in western Washington just south of Seattle.. anyways any help or suggestions any can offer is so very greatly appreciated! I have learned so much from you guys already but never really did much if any jig fishing... Growing up it was always spinner bait and crankbaits when bass fishing... I feel like I'm not a complete bass angler because jig fishing isn't such a hug staple in a bass angler arsenal..
  23. Anybody flipped with the new Maxcuatro from Power Pro? Curious of knot strength compared to regular power pro and knot slippage due to it being so slick and smaller in dia.? I don't get much prefish time these days so hate to go into a tourney with it in 65# and have issues, but I like the smaller dia. if line and knot strength remain the same.
  24. Obviously I need to retie more often, but typically when I break braid flipping with a snell knot, it is caused by where the line rubs against the top of the hook eye before it enters the eye and ties to the shaft. Does anyone have any ideas such as putting a small 1/2" long piece tube (rubber, flexible plastic, coffee straw) or some other means of reducing the abrasion? That part of the line would be covered by the bait anyway. Just looking online for ideas and not seeing anything so thought someone on here may have come up with a solution for this problem.
