  1. Hey guys, I'm looking for a solid and versatile reel for my punching set up, any suggestions? Specifically, I'm ONLY interested in a baitcasting reel that has a "flipping switch". These seem to be impossible to find, but an example of a reel with a flipping switch is the Lew's Super Duty G. Also, I heard that Abu Garcia's black max and silver max have them in specific models. Please help me and list some suggestions, I've scoured the internet and can't find many options. Finding a reel with a flipping switch is my main concern. What do you guys know (P.S. This is unimportant but im throwing it on a 7'3 Okuma Scott Martin Signature TCS Casting Rod Heavy, Fast action because I like the way Scott martin fishes and I'm using it in a kayak so i can't really work a legit 7'11 Ex Heavy flippin stick.) What are the best baitcasters with a flipping switch option? Idc if it's $20 or $400 Thanks!!!!!!
  2. Hey all, I've recently switched over from a 4/0 offset worm hook for all my TX rig baits to using a 4/0-5/0 straight shank heavy wire flippin hooks such as the Trokar TK130, Owner Jungle, VMC, etc...I bought a ton. I'm hyped about it, I've caught a lot of good fish flippin brush and tree stumps for spawning bass. But I also own several rods (all of which I built myself using PB,NFC HMX,RS Eternity) I notice I cannot get a good hook set and lose fish way more often if I'm using anything other than a Heavy action rod (blanks rated for 1oz or more) most of my rods are mediums or medium heavy (rated up to 3/4oz) The heaviest tungsten weight I go is usually 1/2oz, but 90% of the time it's 3/8oz. on 50lb braid, snell knot. Am I doing something wrong? Not setting the hook hard enough?
  3. I have a St. Croix MJC71MHF that I absolutely love as my T-Rig/Jig rod, but I’ve been exploring some new areas in the Louisiana Delta and I’m looking for something with a little more backbone when I get into heavier grass. I’m usually only throwing a 1/2-5/8oz. Looked at the St. Croix MJC76MHMF and the Castaway SV72H. Like the Castaway a little more because it had a little more backbone and 7’6 is a little long for me. Any other recommendations y’all can think of?
  4. So last Christmas I was bought myself a brand new Flippin’ n Pitchin’ setup. It was my first rod that I bought for a specific technique and above all it was my very first Baitcasting Rod/Reel setup ever! Well I haven’t had the opportunity to use this rod how I imagined I’d be using it until yesterday. I started out yesterday morning casting spinners and lipless cranks around some local ponds, caught a few dinks, nothing even remotely big but still nice. But once it hit around Noon - 1 o’clock ish all the fish had left the shallows and I couldn’t find anything. That’s when I pulled out my flipping and pitching setup I had been hauling around with me all day. And yah know, I have to admit, there’s something a little intimidating about purposefully chucking a lure into the branches of a big tree thatsfallen in the water. But I quickly remembered all the YouTube videos I’d seen and posts I’d read about guys pulling absolute pigs out of laydowns and I was able to convince myself that losing a soft plastic isn’t the same as losing a $5 lure and went ahead and started flippin and pitchin all the lay downs I could find. And boy and I glad I did! My first few lay downs weren’t super productive but I’m still rusty at getting my bait in the water quiet enough not to spook any fish and I basically had to stand on the tree that I was pitching to because I couldn’t get a good casting angle off the bank. So I’ll attribute my lack of fish from those spots to that. But after a few not so good pitches and flips I found myself at the laydown that has taken at least 5 or 6 of my lures over the years from casting at it from the other side of the pond. I could see two big bass hovering around the branches of the tree and my heart immediately started racing. I tried my headrest to very quietly get into a good casting position and once I did I pitched out my T-Rigged soft plastic as quiet as I could. It landed on the trunk of the tree and immediately all of the nearby bass were super interested. I could see a few 2 pounders just hovering over my bait. I ever so slowly twitched my lure up the body of the tree, watching one of the bigger bass get closer and closer as it inspected my bait. My heart was pounding at this point. I had gotten my lure as far up the tree as I could before I had to twitch it off the side of the trunk. As my bait fell down into the deeper water, immediately the big bass rocketed down to the bottom! I held on for dear life for what I thought was about the be the most jarring bite I’ve ever gotten in my entire life!... but nothing. I was so fired up that I immediately pulled my bait right back out of the water to do the exact same sequence of events over again, but as soon as I pulled it up I had wished I left it down there for an extra second with a few good twitches. When I pulled it up I saw the bass follow it up and then swim back into the deep part of the tree once my bait broke the surface. I didn’t let that discourage me though. I pitched my bait right back out there. This was the pitch that will stick with me for a very long while, and to be honest I’m not sure when I felt the bite but all of the sudden I knew I had a head shaking largemouth bass on the end of my line and II wasn’t about to let it get away. I set the hook hard and with a grunt ripped that fish right out of the water as soon as I possibly could. The fight was short but the reward will be with me forever. I pulled up what was easily one of the biggest bass I’ve ever seen pulled out of this pond. I let out a celabratory ““Yeah!” While holding my fish and the guy across the pond from me did the same! Even he knew it was a big fish or this pond too!! Luckily I managed to snap a few pictures while trying to awkwardly hold the fish and position myself in view of my phone camera. I know this fish is only about 2 pounds (maybe) but it was still a catch I’ll always remember!
  5. Hey, I never really fished in heavy wood cover before because the fishing for my local species is very different. Caught all my Bass on Spinnerbaits and Crankbaits and Worms. The cover consists mainly out of old, isolated, half- or completetly submerged trees with thick branches and big laydowns around rock bottom. Like here: I want to use 20# AbrazX on my Avid MHF. The Bass here are not getting really big (8lb+ is huge!). So there is 3 Methods I seperated but I dont really know what to use/ which one has the best hookup ratio and the lowest snagging ratio in this type of Cover? - Flippin Jig? Very simple but maybe too big profile, have my eyes on the Ike Mini flip Jig. - Texas Rig with EWG and bobber stop - Texas Rig with flipping Hook snell-knotted and bobber stop paired with beaver baits like Baby DBomb and the Berkley Pit Boss. I plan on fishing lower weights first on the edges of the Cover and then get down in it with the bigger bullets. Water temp will be around 68 to 77 degrees F. (20-25 deg C) So how should I rig this up?
  6. I am planning on buying a baitcast setup for frogging in the spring/summer. Any suggestions on rods+reels? $150 range or less for rod and for reel.I am leaning towards the dobyns fury magheavy flippin stick and the bps pq2. I'm not brand specific just has to be a flippin stick 7'-7'3 and a reel thats solid, has at leas 6:1 GR, and preferably the simpler to operate the better. some other reels i would consider -h20 mettle (is the gen 2 as good as the first?) -Abu orra sx -shimano caenan
  7. I use Berkley Professional Grade Braid when flipping and pitching jigs. After a handful of uses, the coating on the braid wears off and the braid looks thicker and not as smooth. The line doesn't come off the reel smooth and it gets caught in the reel sometimes or pinches on itself, preventing a smooth pitch or flip. My reel is set properly because I can pitch and flip just fine when the coating on the braid is there. Do you have any thoughts on what the issue could be? Is it the line? Is there something I'm not aware of? Anyone else have this problem? Thanks
  8. I just started fishing these about three months ago.... Let's just say, they are amazing. They caught some crucial fish for me in my last two derbies. The bite had shut off from the morning and I was able to grind out a limit in some extremely tough summer fishing conditions. I just wanted to put this out there for anyone looking for a new "go to" flipping presentation. They have awesome action. They really are crazy!
  9. So first I'll explain my situation and then my question: I'm a kayak angler from Texas and typically bring about 5 rods with me to cover a majority of techniques, and I often have rods that I can double up for both techniques. Most of the lakes I fish around here contain a lot of diverse cover such as heavy vegetation, standing timber, or submerged wood and flipping into this cover can be a recipe for big fish. In the past, I've been flipping with a 7'3 Micro Magic MH rod, and although it has a fair amount of power, I have 17 pound fluoro on the reel, and I prefer to use this set up for texas rigs and jigs. I'm in the process of purchasing a new setup to be used almost exclusively for pitching: something to flip light tungsten (usually 1/2 Oz) into this cover. I'm willing to go higher in price point but I'm running into more questions as I search for a rod. I was looking at the G Loomis Gl2, and then I saw the new E6X Loomis came out with recently which is lighter weight and more updated. Things became more complicated when I started investigating Dobyns rods, which it seems many are more keen on than Loomis. I would prefer a split grip rod, but I'm starting to realize most longer rods tend to have a full cork handle, something which I liked about the GL2 flipping rod, as it did have a split grip on a 7'5 rod. I also would like something without an especially long butt section, because though I do stand up to pitch often, if I'm drifting with the wind, its easier to remain seated, and I don't want the reel to be far from me. Does anyone have any info about these rods or recommendations they would make me? In terms of reel, I had planned on pairing up with a gen 3 revo STX from Abu with 50 pound braid (has anyone tried that new seaguar braid that's black colored Denny Brauer helped design)? Any info would be much appreciated!
  10. I'm looking to add a new casting rod to my collection. Will be used for swimbaits, umbrella rigs, frogs, and Flippin. So my question is, would it be better to get a Flippin stick and use it for all this? Or a swimbait/Umbrella rig rod and use it? Wondering if the swimbait would be sensitive enough for Flippin? But most Flippin rods only have about 1 1/2 - 2 oz lure rating. And swimbait Rods are 3 oz and up.. The two I've narrowed it down to are the Powell inferno 765 Swimbait rod. Or the iRod genesis II 7'5" Fred's magic stick or the 7'7" Flippin stick. Will be pairing it with a quantum energy 100 7.0:1 reel. Thanks any imput would be appreciated.

    3 lb flippin

    From the album: Fishing 2013

Caught this 3 pounder at my buddy's private pound. Field and Stream tec Spec Elite rod, Stradic 2500 FJ reel by Shimano, and using Havok Pit Boss Green Pump. I know this fish doesnt look 3 lbs, I think its the camera angle, light, and way I am holding him. Another great Fish and was fun to catch.
  12. From the album: Fishing 2013

My girlfriend caught this 6 pound bass at my buddy's private lake. She was flipping the reaction innovations sweet beaver in magic Craw color. She was flipping it on my 6'8" Field and Stream Tec Spec Elite (Great rods)MH rod and Shimano Stradic 2500 FJ and using 10 lb test Seaguar Red Label. Casting up near the shoreline, she was bumping it across a weed bed and smoked it when she saw it. Awesome catch one of my favorite memories of our trip. Although, she was mad at me for not letting her mount it, She'll catch a bigger one soon no doubt.
  13. From the album: Fishing 2013

Girlfriend pulled this sweet 4 pounder out of a weeds by flipping a green pumpkin pit boss.
  14. I currently use 4/0 EWG worm hooks on a pegged texas rig when flippin and pitching around grass/trees etc. I have seen "flipping hooks" advertised and I wanted to know the benefits of using these vs offset worm hooks. Without the offset shank, I cant see how you could get the bait in line. Also, I see there is a "keeper" on a lot of these but the bend on the shank of a worm hook holds the bait in place reasonably well for me. They seem to be heavier gauge than a standard hook but I dont use light wire hooks and have never had any issues with straightening a hook. Who uses flipping hooks as opposed to EWG worm hooks and why? Thanks
  15. i am looking to get a new heavy rod. i am thinking about the dobyn's champion 735c. any thoughts. any suggestions?
