  1. Hey everyone, I spent this past sunday on Lake Erie out of Sandusky Bay. I've had great days on Erie around the islands but that has mostly been in Spring. Sunday was a grind with only 6 smallmouth to show for the day all less than 3 pounds and all coming on a drop shot or ned rig. The lake was pretty rough so that made it hard to effectively fish shoals so we spent most of our time behind islands out of some of the wind. I'm headed back this saturday to try and redeem myself. If anyone had any advice on depths or presentations to try it would be greatly appreciated. I don't need or want specific spots just a fresh idea or two to help make a better day. Thanks!
  2. So I am entering my 3rd year in my fishing club as a Non-Boater. We are based out of East Michigan and only fish Erie, St.Clair and the Detroit River. Naturally we only fish for Small Mouth and sometimes large mouth if we have no choice. I have been fishing with the same guy for the last couple years. And, he knows only one way of fishing big lakes.... Drifting / Dragging. We Drag for hours. Now, do not get me wrong, we catch fish. I came in 3rd place last year, so I cant complain too much. But, the same guys keep beating us and they talk about how they are moving around the lakes (Erie / St. Clair) all day long. My boater is really open minded and agrees that we need to try a different game plan on fishing a more localized area as opposed to drifting over a half mile pile of rocks. My thought is to use the trolling motor more and keep us drifting slower and reel in our lures (tubes) until we find a school and then attack that specific area. Can anyone share their ideas or practices on big water? Additional info: We do not use the fish-finder to spot fish. Even if we catch fish on a specific drift, we will continue on the drift until we hit weeds or not a rocky bottom.
  3. I have a bass tournament on Lake Erie in late April. Any idea on what I should use? Thanks in advance.
  4. I've been bass fishing as long as I can remember and haven't started smallmouth fishing til this past spring. I'm in the military and have spent most of my time in the south nailing largemouth. Well, now I'm addicted to Smallmouth, lol. I was lucky enough to take orders up to Buffalo, NY and get to fish the Niagara and Lake Ontario. I'm curious if anyone has any tips on winter smallmouth up here. I've located what I think would be good spots for winter smallies on the Niagara bar. Sloping shelf from 25 to 40 ft in about 100 ft distance. I'm thinking of throwing an Erie darter on a 1/2 oz jighead, and 4'' Goby on same jighead and just slowly dragging it down that slope and in and around that 40ft plataeu. Any tips, advice, feedback would be greatly appreciated. Oh and if you have a Droid phone I highly recommend the "Cabela's Recon Fish" app. Saves you money on buying an expensive gps fishfinder. Thats how i was able to locate all of these possible spots on the lake. Wet lines and bent rods gents.
