  1. Hi BR, Here is a video that centers about what I would pack into a Fall Bass Fishing Box. 3 baits for Deep and 3 Baits for Shallow to simplify things during what could be one of the top times for Junk fish. Hope you like it! JN
  2. Hello and thanks for clicking on this. I've recently found a post for this very topic (posted back in 2013), but the thread didn't have near the detail I was hoping for. So that's why I'm here. I've gut hooked three of my last five catches, which means I must be doing something wrong. Two of them swallowed the hook point deep and I was not able to remove it. Those fish were bleeding quite a bit ? Based on the aforementioned thread, I'm guessing it's a bite detection issue. On all three of these fish, I didn't realize I had a fish until I started reeling to make my next cast. Here's how I'm working the rig: Cast out, let the weight and worm fall on slack line, close the bail and deadstick for about 15 seconds. Then, after reeling in a tiny bit of slack (if any at all), gently lift the rod tip to remove most of the slack. Set the rod tip back down, gently lift again, down again. I'll keep doing this, periodically deadsticking, until I'm confident there's no fish in that spot. All of this lifting and dropping occurs on a slack or slightly slack line. The first 7 or 8 fish I caught on the drop shot were all perfect hook sets, right in the lip. With those fish, I was lifting the rod tip far enough to remove all of the slack, sometimes even lifting the weight off the bottom just a tad. But, I noticed I was catching more fish by leaving some slack in the line. I think it makes for a more natural presentation. So I guess my question is: How much slack should I be leaving in the line when I'm working this rig?? My setup is: Spinning reel spooled with straight braid on a medium power, fast action rod. Size 1 or 1/0 Gamakatsu drop shot hook. 5" Zoom worm, nose hooked. 1/8 or 1/4 oz cylinder weight. Final note: I've only been fishing for about 4 months. I've tried Texas rigs, Carolina rigs, shaky heads, weightless plastics, pig and jigs, various crank baits, spinner baits, buzz baits, topwaters (frogs, poppers, jointed minnows, etc)... The ONLY rig I've landed fish on is the drop shot. It seems that every beginner has that one rig that works for them, and this one is mine. I really don't want to abandon it. I do however plan on switching to barbless hooks and learning the behind-the-gill hook removal technique. Thank you all for taking the time to read this very long post. Any feedback at all is greatly appreciated!
  3. I plan on adding drop shotting to my arsenal this year. I don’t want to spend too much money on a rod out the gate since I don’t know if I will even like the technique. The two rods I have narrowed down to is the Enigma Aaron’s Edge 6’10” ML/XF ($119) and the St Croix Mojo Bass 6’10” ML/XF ($130). The Enigma rod is a little cheaper but has a microwave guide which I have no experience with and I wonder if they get tricky with leader knots since I will be using braid and a flouro leader. Which one would you recommend and I would gladly take any other rod suggestions around the same price range.
  4. I fished from shore and during the summer I do quite well using the drop shot method. Is it still effective in the fall or should I stick to jerk baits, etc.??
  5. I'm am looking to get into drop shotting. I will be buying a 6'9" ML/XF St.Croix avid spinning rod. I just need a reel to go with it. $200 is my max. What suggestions do you guys have?
  6. I've been experimenting with some different techniques that I've learned since I got into bass fishing while targeting speckled trout down here in South Louisiana. I've found that the drop shot is very successful when fishing over oyster beds. I'm planning on picking up some terminal tackle tomorrow before I go out this weekend, and I was hoping to get some opinions from you guys about the setup. First off, what weight shape would work best on these oyster beds? I was using a cheap 1/4oz round style which seemed to work well, but I thought maybe a year drop style with a flat bottom might be better. Another question... I had a limited selection of hooks to choose from, and wound up using a 1/0 Mustad Demon offset circle hook. I'm drop shotting a 3" paddle tail swimbait. What size/type of hook would you guys recommend? Thanks in advance for the help
  7. To follow up on my question of what technique you plan to try this year. A lot of you have mentioned drop shot, so I'm gonna try to help your learning curve by telling you how I fish it. Rod- 6'10" to 7'3" ML to M fast or extra fast Reel- 2500 Shimano Stradic FJ Line- Either straight fluorocarbon 6-8 pound test or braid (12 to 20 lb) to a 6-8 pound fluorocarbon leader Knot- Palomar and run the tag end back through the hook eyelet to make the hook stand out Baits- Yamamoto shad shaped worms, Roboworms, Reins Bubbling shakers, Poor Boys Erie Darters Hooks- Gamakatsu split shot/drop shot in either size 1 or 1/0 Weights- cylinder shaped lead or tungsten (better feel and smaller) usually between 1/8 and 1/4 To fish it I cast it out and work back in slowly twitching the rod tip without lifting the weight. Over a certain depth say 15 feet it seems to work better dropping straight down. To set the hook just reel and maintain constant pressure. I hope this helps some of you new to this technique.
  8. Hello everyone, I got a kind of tricky question. I'm looking to get a finesse spinning rod to use with Drop Shotting, weightless senkos, shacky head, wacky rig, etc.(targetting LMB and Small Mouth) I know that it's best to have two different rods for said aplications but I can't afford two different rods. With that being said what would you guys recommend for a good all around finesse rod? (Price<$150)
  9. hey guys, im kinda stuck right now. So i just bought a brand new shimano ci4+ 3000, and i need a nice drop shot rod to compliment it, im stuck between the dobyns sierra, dobyns savvy, shimano crucial, or if i find one in time a fenwick elite tech smallmouth. i preferably want a ml action with a extra fast tip for drop shots and shakeyheads and would like it to be really sensitive. i own a dobyns fury and very much like it but i have never used a savvy or sierra. any advice or other rod suggetions under 200$ would be great, thanks!
  10. Hey guys I am fishing 90 percent of the time from the bank and was wondering if you guys have any tips or tricks for this style of drop shot.
  11. i just bought a g loomis imx from cabelas for 189 cause it was on sale, i needed a rod to pair up with my stradic ci4 plus, i needed a rod that was going to be really sensitive and lightweight. i preferably wanted a medium light action but i went and bought the imx that is a 6'6 medium rated 1/8-3/8. my question is, is this going to be long enough to throw a drop shot and shakey head? i just dont want to waste my time with it if its not worth using as a drop shot rod! PLEASE HELP!
  12. hey guys i was just wondering what rod would be better as a drop shot/shakeyhead? ive narrowed it down to a dobyns savvy or sierra! any advice or expierence with them would be greatly appreciated!
  13. Hi all, I'm new to the drop shot technique and am doing the necessary research to become more familiar in advance of a late August fishing trip. It seems that (almost) everyone uses a depth/fish finder when drop shotting for largemouth, which makes sense to me. I don't have a depth/fish finder and will be fishing on a 200 acre lake in Connecticut with clear to stained water color quality (no gas powered engines are allowed) and about 80% of water is between 5-8 feet deep, but there's a 3 acre section of the lake that's 20 feet deep. Is it worth drop shot fishing without the depth/fish finder? And if so, what do I need to do to be successful? Thanks!
  14. So I have been thinking of buying a finesse fishing casting rod to add to my arsenal. The TFO Gary Loomis Tactical Drop Shot Casting Rod looks great in my opinion and has all the specs that I would like for a simple finesse fishing rod, but the only issue is that it is made for drop shots and not finesse. Will this rod be good enough for finesse fishing? Another thing is, which rod would you prefer for a finesse presentation, the Lew's TP-1 Speed Stick IM8 Casting Rod or the TFO Gary Loomis Tactical Drop Shot Casting rod(both medium light with a fast action)? Thanks!
  15. I am looking to get a new drop shot rod and looking for some advice from anyone who has the following rods. I am deciding between the Dobyns champion extreme hp 702sf and the Megabass orochi xx stinger shot or medium light drop shot. I will be using 7 lb fluoro and 1/8 - 1/4 oz drop shot weights .Any advice/recommendations would be appreciated.
  16. I see a lot of the pros caching fish with drop shots. Ive never really tried it other Than a couple times and I didn't catch anything. My question is how long do u cast it out and wait for a bite? Do the fish locate the drop short or do I have to locate the fish then use the drop shot? can it be use near weeds and pads? Usually I will use a senko or jig/plastics around these kinds of structures. im just wondering for the slow days if I should toss out a drop shot and read a magazine waiting for bass to bite..? Or do u recast it often/keep moving to find fish? I find it boring and hard to just leave a bait sit and not do anything... But if I catch fish then, I don't care what technique I use! thanks for ur input!
  17. Hello people of bass resource I got an e6x g loomis drop shot rod 6-10 Mag medium. I paired it with the symetre 25000fl with power pro #10 and #6 fluorocarbon leader. Is this a good combo?
  18. I think I worded this title wrong, I'm not a beginner fisherman but I am a beginner to the drop shot. I'd like some pointers to help. Is a heavy weight better to keep it on the bottom? What's a good distance from the weight? Can I fish ANY soft plastics or should I stick with worms? I ask that last question because a lot of my Missouri/Ozark success is due to YUM Craws first and Senkos second (typically T-rigged). What size hook is appropriate? Have you had better luck weedless rigging the hook or simply hooking it in the head? Is there anything against rigging two hooks? Have I posted too many questions? I've researched it on the internet quite a bit today (probably should be working) but I have too many specific questions that weren't being answered properly, so I'm here now.
  19. I've always just bass fished with a jig, crankbait, spinnerbait, etc, and believe it or not, i've never used a drop shot rig in my life. I'm getting kinda bored of catching fish the same way so why not learn something new, heck, it could even turn out to be super productive. So, can someone tell me how to set up a drop shot?
  20. Hey guys, I'm wanting to get a new rod. I was really hyped about getting a few mojo bass rods by St croix- but people give them so much crap on here! I have only used ugly stiks and Abu rods under $80 to success (I have used other rods which broke). My thoughts on why people bash the mojo bass rods on here is because they use really high end gear, where all I want is to upgrade from very cheap rods. Can you guys at least assure me that the mojo bass rods are better than the ugly stiks and Abu rods I've been using??? To give you an idea, the most sensitive I own is the ugly stik intercostal 6' 6" Medium 2 pc.
  21. Going to a private 30 acre lake Monday here in central Texas. Not sure what to rig for? We have had a lot of rain in the last month or so. I have 4 rods and need advice on how to rig and what to throw?
  22. Hey all, I'm trying to put together a list of different ways to rig soft plastics. Pretty straightforward. I'm planning to try all these this summer, and maybe do a how-to on them. So far we've got: Texas rig Carolina rig Wacky rig Drop shot rig Neko rig Alabama rig Weightless rig Shaky head rig General jig rigging (football, swim, bladed) Ball head/underspin rig Split shot rig That's all I got so far. Let's hear some more, plus any you randomly come up with!
  23. I ushually make my drop shot leader about a foot and a half long, how about you? I ushually use a drop shot for when fish are feeding just above the ground. if they're feeding any higher in the water column I feel a crankbait or other lure is more effective or makes more sence to use.
  24. HI guys, Went out Saturday morning To Raystown lake. Had a pretty good trip. Couldn't get em to bite up shallow, Except one decent bass on a skinny dipper. (17in 2-2.5). Any way, I was trying a dropshot around bridge pillars and started to catch some nice fish. I landed three, all about 16-18 inches. Broke two off and lost three more during the fight, all in about an hour! It was rocking pretty good considering the last few trips have been kinda slow! I had pitch in close to the pillar, and the fish would hit on on the 8 -10 count. I caught one fish dropping it all the way down (21 count). After a while I was just stopping it @9 mississippi and shaking it and getting bit. This leads to my question. Like a dunce, I forgot my depth finder! I was wondering how deep would a 3/8oz dropshot get in 8 seconds? I was using a bass assassin fluke type lure, 3in long, and a 3/8 bell sinker on 8lb mono. I am thinking it was like 10- 12 feet, but not real sure. Thanks guys! Jim
  25. I have started fishing the drop shot and I have had some success on it. Right now I am using 8lb Trilene XL mono and I want to step it up. My one question is should I get braid or fluorocarbon. My setup is a Pflueger Supreme with a 6' 9" Medium Light Fast action Fenwick EliteTech Smallmouth. I will also use this setup for senkos and shakey heads or anything else that is finesse.
