  1. I have a Lew's LFS SSG1SHL that has a drag issue currently. I left the drag tightened down unintentionally and the washer has become fused to the main gear. I discovered this when I broke it down this weekend for a detailed cleaning. I've been looking online for carbon fiber drag replacements for this reel and the newer LFSs that I have. Does anyone have any experience in this area? I've contacted Lew's about obtaining a replacement rulon drag but haven't heard back from them.
  2. Hello, I’m having problems With my reel I spooled it up with mono backing to my braid and everything is working just fine now thank you everyone for the help, now when I tighten my reels drag star when I pull the line out it’s making like a loud almost screeching sound while I pull the line out only on the tight drag setting now the low drag, it’s a lews speed spool and just has the standard magnetic breaks please feel free to leave your suggestions bellow thanks Marcus.
  3. I normally use 5 pounds of drag (measured with a scale) but occasionally crank it up when fishing heavy cover, and sometimes go as low as a couple pounds if I just want to enjoy the fight (bass actually peel a little drag but can still be landed fairly quickly), though hooksets can be a pain as I have to remember to thumb the spool or risk a failed hookset.
  4. I am new to this forum and just got back into fishing this summer after taking a few years off. I am trying to get into catfishing and I finally think I may have found a spot for catfishing since I don't have a boat. I am fishing with 65 and 100 pound braided line with sunfish as bait. I learned that you need heavy drag like 20-30 pounds for catfishing. My reel is the Avenger AV 40b spinning reel and I looked up the max drag on this specific reel and it said it was 13 pounds. My other reel is rated at around 30 pounds. I cranked the drag all the way up on my 40b reel and I could not pull it out, so I am having a hard time believing that it is 13 pounds at this point. I then tried the reel that was around 30 pounds max drag and it was tough but I could pull it. So I thought maybe the 40b has a "lock drag" on it. So I looked it up and found a forum on here that was talking about "lock drag", however, they said that max drag and "lock drag" are the same thing. I know for a fact it is not 13 pounds and I know my source said my specific model is 13 pounds max drag. So I am really confused as how the max drag/lock drag is only 13 pounds when I couldn't pull it but I could pull 30 pounds of drag on my other reel? Can someone explain to me all this confusion?
  5. Hi all. I'm having issues with a weak drag system on my Abu Garcia Promax reel and wondering if it can be fixed. Now a little backstory; yesterday I was out fishing and caught a bunch of dink smallmouths, I noticed my drag slipping just a bit even with it locked down tight. OK, no biggie I thought as I still landed the fish. Then I hooked into a pike and immediately he screams off 20 feet of line from the drag. I had to thumb the spool pretty hard to try and keep tension but alas he got off. That got me wondering. I looked up the specs of the reel online and it advertises a max drag rating of 18lbs. Considering I was using 15lb fluoro at the time my line should have snapped before the drag went off. So today I took a scale and measured the drag strength... 3lb max! Weak! No wonder it was barely enough to stop a smallie. Is there anything I can do or am I stuck getting a better reel? PS I've only had this reel since June.
  6. Drag tightens but won't loosen
  7. Hey guys, what do you think of this drag slipping issue? I was certainly intrigued by the idea of the bulldog drag. well lo and behold, the drag slips even when it is tightened down as much as possible. I have never opened up the reel. I always loosen the drag when I'm done fishing. 1) Is there 1 single obvious explanation? - I ask this because I am not really inclined/mentally equipped to open the thing up and troubleshoot it myself 2) Would I be better served sending this back to the original company? Or DVT? Thanks in advance.
  8. I could have SWORE there was a saltwater section on BassResource.com but I guess not! If you don't care to read my rambling, I have a TL:DR at the bottom of the post! Let me put it straight. I'm moving to Florida permanently. Every reel I own is a Daiwa Tatula, Tatula CT, and Tatula CT Type R, and Zillion. I have multiples of all these reels. Love the Tatulas. I really don't want to dunk any of my Tats in salt. So I'm in the market for a new reel (anything for new gear, right?). Was checking out loads of sub 100 dollar cylindrical reels just to use in the salt and not care about... Not very happy with the choices. So I figure ehhh. Might as well go big or go home, right? So right now I have the Lexa HD 300 picked out. I originally thought why not go with the 400 for the whopping extra 100 yards of line capacity... But here's the point of this thread... Do I need that capacity? According to the internet, this reel holds about 250 yards of 30 pound braid, and considering the reel has under 30 pounds of drag, I don't see why I would need to go any higher than 30 pounds for open water. Maybe if I want to try to hit some pier or bridge snook, then I'd have to step it up to 50 or 65 pound I guess? TL:DR In any case, how many yards can a fish under 100 pounds drag off the spool? Is 250 or even just 200 yards enough line for the ocean? I have never fished for any saltwater species and if I happen to land onto a big tarpon or jack, how much would they be able to peel off of the reel? It's got a whopping 25 pounds of drag, keep in mind.
  9. Why is the drag on my Calcutta 201B so loose even after I tighten the star drag all the way?
  10. So I've got a Daiwa Laguna that I've only had for a couple weeks. I never took it apart when I initially got it (which I usually like to do) but no big deal. Decided to clean my reels tonight and got both Tatulas and my Zillion done in a breeze. The Laguna, oddly enough, is the cheapest, simplest reel, and when I put it all together and pulled line out to test the drag, it felt weak. Not sure. It is rated at 10lbs max drag but it really doesn't feel like it's at 10lbs. Now I know you guys can't feel it. I'm not asking you to tell me yes or no that it's messed up, but I checked the schematic over and over and took it apart 4 times and made absolutely sure everything was where it belonged. What I'm asking is this... Can over-lubricating the gears lessen the drag tension? it seems an odd question but seriously. Could it? My other reels are as tight as my wife's skinny jeans but the Laguna seems to have lost some poundage on the drag tension. Thoughts? I drench all my reels in oil and it's never been a problem.
  11. So i was on craiglist and i found this reel for $40. Lol is this thing any good? http://www.fishingrodpro.com/product/kastking-sharky-ii-waterproof-spinning-reel-up-to-41-5lbs-revolutionary-drag-system-with-carbon-fiber-matrix-enhanced-brass-gear-and-no-screw-power-launch-spool-2016-flagship-spinning-reel-2/
  12. It's an Abu Garcia Black Max 2, the low profile one, 2 months or so old. When it happened: I got a backlash, got lazy and tried to fix it with the trick where you put your thumb on the spool and turn the handle (first time I did it). I heard a click (maybe it was thumb bar engaging or maybe something getting damaged). So it didn't work and and just untangled it normally (picking at the line). Next time I try reeling in, the drag won't hold. Basically, my worm lure is heavy enough to keep it from reeling in. What I tried: Wiping the drag washers, tightening the drag (to the tightest), checking for slipping line on the spool (ghost drag?), made sure I positioned those two washers in a () position. Other things I noticed: I also completely removed the line and cranked the handle. The spool does turn but putting my thumb fairly lightly on the spool will stop it from spinning while I can still crank the handle. The drag washers should still be good, since it's pretty new and its not used too much. Also, does anyone have the schematics for this reel. Can't seem to find it online. Abu Garcia's website only has the Black Max 1 which is similar but definitely has different parts. I just want to make sure I put everything back together right. Any ideas on what I can do to fix? Thanks for any responses. Here's a couple of picture if it helps.
  13. I just got in to bass fishing and picked up a president 6930 reel and Abu Garcia 6'6 vengence M/MF rod. After some research on here I figured I'd put 10lb braid on with an 8lb floro leader. My question is do you set your drag @ 25% strength of the braid or leader? I would guess the leader since it is "weaker" but I don't want to assume...thx Jim
