  1. I have really been reading up on rod & reels, lines & tackle, and techniques for the purpose of buying the best set up for fishing for panfish in my area. The low land, swampy holes of good ole South Carolina. Here, all water is at best murky and almost every good spot for panfish is covered with pads, algae, down limbs, weeds, cattails, etc. The water bottoms are usually gunky too. My problem is no one every writes articles on this sort of setting. No one ever makes videos of fishing these areas. Clearer waters, gravel bottoms, and if there’s cover, it’s light and easily fished around as compared to here. (1) I want a set up for throwing a lightweight in-line spinner. Rod, reel, line, size of spinner, color. (2) I want to try some kind of artificial with a sliding bobber. Maybe something like a jig head with a curly tail. (3) would just like to get some opinions on anything else to use other than a live crickets or worms. Keeping in mind the war zone of cover I described above in the holes I fish. Also, sometimes it’s not the cover in the water but the crap I got to fish over to get to the water.
  2. Hey guys, It's August, and I was recently out at a lake in NC. It's Muddy, with water temp around the 80s. I found two active spawning beds, one on the north end, and one on the south end of the lake. From the best view I could get (1ft visibility in the shallows with glasses) they appeared to be bed of either shad, bluegill, and/or crappie. As still a novice to behavior, what would be spawning in August? Would bass be opportunistic in going after beds in the summer? The beds are located close to dropoffs. Thanks all!

  4. Hello fishing peers, You can call me Regi or Jr.I go to college in Greensboro, NC.My mother stays in Riverdale,GA which is a little suburb. My dad stays in Goose Creek, SC.I am also from Gainesville, FL. I spend my time kind of split between these areas, especially the city areas. My dad was military so I've got to fish some good areas in the south. He started me fishing at the age of 2 and recently turned 21.I'm on my own now so I am still learning.I joined this site to soak up and learn knowledge/tips from you guys! I was wondering do guys in any of these locations know of fishing spots in these areas or around them.In GA,I've found a couple of spots in Fayette,Clayton, and Henry county since those areas are as far as I usually go.Atlanta has been hard for me to find spots since staying with my mom during college breaks in a city.In SC, I tend to mostly be in Goose Creek,Charleston,Walterboro area because of family. In NC, I've fished the Greensboro,Burlington,Fayetteville, and Jacksonville areas.Burlington I have had a lot of success. In FL,I know a lot of places in Gainesville,Williston,Chiefland,Bronson,Jacksonville.I mostly be in Gainesville or Williston in Florida due to family also.Fishing is a real passion of mine, hopefully I can share information and locations with you guys and vice versa. I apologize for this long post and I will try to learn the ins and outs of the forum.
  5. I have heard that that there are a ton of catfish in a nearby pond but nobody has fished for them in a couple of years. So recently i have decided that i would try to catch one. So I go out to the pond early in the morning and put a hook on with a couple of weights and then put a 1 inch piece of slim Jim on and just sit there around an hour just waiting and nothing. I have been doing this for around a week and nothing. About 10 years ago I remember catching them with slim Jim. But so far nothing. And as far as I'm aware nobody has seen any catfish on top of the water. So my question is. Did one spawning season did all of their eggs get eaten by bass or bream or could they have died out without anybody seeing? Please help me figure out if I'm jsut wasting my time.
  6. Perhaps it is only in the heat of cabin fever here in the frozen desolation of northern Illinois that one can truly appreciate the little panfish we can so easily take for granted. I'm sure that most all the anglers on this site cut their teeth with bluegill. The are quite possibly the best fish for doing so. They are abundant, readily willing to oblige your requests to put a hook in their mouth (they're not renowned for being picky,) and pound for pound, fight much harder than a bass. This is very important, as having a fish that fights as hard as one a much larger species teaches that most important lesson in angling...how to perennially overestimate the size of your catch. They are quite entertaining too. Simply go see the fish tanks at your local Cabelas during feeding time...a school of bluegill attack and rip apart worms with the fervor of piranhas attacking an injured, bleeding catfish, in a manner often more entertaining than bass eating goldfish. The greatest attribute about this pint sized powerhouse with its indomitable spirit is its loyalty. When bass are busy staring at your lures and guesstimating how much it cost while your are dying of dehydration above water from pitching and flipping so constantly (to no avail), that you have forgotten to drink water, bluegill are always at your rod tip. Perhaps the only thing that matches their availability is the abundance of ways in which you can catch them...capture crickets, hook minnows, slip on a worm, ball up some Kraft cheese singles, drift a fly, or stop by a greasy fast food chain and thread on some pieces of french fries, there is simply no wrong way to catch them! They can even be quite sporting. Go after the big ones with little paddletail swim baits, or-my personal favorite-use a spinning rod like a fly rod. Yes, you read this correctly. I may occasionally use a water bobber, but tying on a a woolly bugger to the longest ultralight i can find, I'll cast it like a fly rod and strip it. Like I said, there is no wrong way...so have a little fun with it. My new method to catch the giants consists of taking a long rod, tying on a tiny tube, resting the bait on the surface and twitching it like a cricket. There is a certain strictness about bass fishing, a "do it this way and don't look like an idiot," attitude, but at the end of a long day, its nice to a act out your goofiest impulses and ideas and still catch fish. Especially on a fish that tastes better than the bass we devote so much energy to chasing, and that makes themselves so available that in the time it it would take to complete all 42 of your "last casts" before leaving, could provide you and a few friends with a decent meal! So here ye, hear ye, I say cheers to that loyal little soldier, that pint sized powerhouse, that tireless masochist, and delicious slice of flaky heaven. May you swim strong and freely through the water in life, and battered and tender through the oil in death! I'll be seeing you soon enough!
  7. What fly rod/reel would you all recommend for targeting big bream and panfish?
  8. Hi, I moved to Bartlett, TN a few months back, and I am looking for some places to fish here, Catch and release is fine for me for bass, but my wife and I do love to eat bream and perch. Any help would be appreciated, I do not have a boat right now, but will get one this year, bank fishing and pond jumping is my favorite way to fish now. I am retired and just appreciate catching some fish and enjoying life. I would appreciate some help. Regards, Scott
