  1. Just ordered this reel and was looking to get some more user-info on it. Got it in the 6.3:1 gear ratio paired with a P5 Daemos mainly for chatterbaits. Anyone got a review? Thanks, Umair
  2. I've been looking for a reel primarily for freshwater, mostly bass but the occasional salt water. I just want a reel that is durable and enough to be worth the money. I have looked at some of the DC reels like the curado, slx and scorpion but ive been wondering if I need the chip. I am unsure if the chip will restrict distance or if it is worth the price. I have also been looking at JDM reels like the SLX DC 71 but do not know how durable they are compared to the curados. It is a concern that there is no warranty and that they are not as easy to repair with parts. I am primarily a bank fisherman so I want to know if the 70 spool size will be enough. Is the I-DC-5 worth getting the JDM vs the I-DC-4? I am an intermediate baitcaster user so I am wondering if I need the DC to help reduce backlashes and also skip lures. (This is one of my weak points) The Tatula I have hard great things about especially when it comes to skipping, but I am concerned about the durability and how smooth it is compared to the Curado. I also do not want a reel that is only good for skipping. I will be pairing whatever reel I decide to get with a Dobyns Fury 734C which Ive heard runs light. I know its a lot so basically: Need a durable, somewhat salt resistant reel An all rounder Left retrieve Under $300 Are DC models worth it? Are JDM models a risky purchase? Are JDM models worth it? Is a 70 size spool enough to hold the amount of line that I need? Is the Curado MGL a good purchase or is the Tatula better? I fish mostly 3/8 ounce lures and above Senkos weighted and unweighted I am a intermediate level angler when it comes to baitcasters Any answers would be appreciated and I am open to suggestions on different reels.
  3. So in a previous post I stated that I am just getting back into Bass fishing and needed some insight into which baitcaster to buy out of the two I was looking at. I got a lot of good suggestions and insights but one in particular really got me thinking. Zell_pop1 had suggested I buy both, so after thinking about it for sometime I decided he was right and I bought both. Not only did I buy both, a few days later I bought another one, why, I don’t know. Now I have 3 Baitcasters and have no idea what type of line to spool them with. Two of them are 6:2:1 gear ratios while the third is an 8:3:1. As I stated in my previous post I am a bank angler, hoping to get a kayak sometime late summer, early fall. I would greatly appreciate any advice on what I type of line I should spool them with. I will be throwing mostly soft plastics, crank baits, spinner baits, and spoons. I have Yo-Zuri hybrid spooled on one but am willing to go in a different direction altogether, I’m not married to one type of line at this point. Help please! ( I still don’t know what I was thinking buying 3!!)
  4. I’ve recently decided to jump in to baitcasters. I’ve been dialing the resistance for my lures and I’ve been casting well and far. I rarely if ever have a birds nest. However…..my braid consistently gets knotted on the spool. Sometimes it will dig in to the line in the spool and it’ll have a “catch” which stops my lure midair. I’ve switched from light braid up to 30lbs in case the string diameter was the issue, but I’m still having the issues. I get about 10-15 minutes of casting and then these knots and catches start happening. I’m beside myself because I’m really loving my bait casting but I’m lost to what I’m doing wrong. I can find tutorials about the birds nest, but nothing specific about these issues. Help! Please!!!
  5. Looking for an all around baitcaster to pair with a 7’3” MH legend tournament I just got from my fiancé for Xmas. Sadly I have to wait to use it as I live in Minnesota but heading to Newton Lake (top 20 bass fishing lake) in Southern IL in April. I have Shimano SLX-DC, Daiwa tatula SV TW 103, and Lews Pro Ti reels. They’re all great but would love some input on what to pair with a “do it all” rod. I primarily bass fish and occasionally go for pike. I am pretty thrifty when it comes to finding deals so feel free to throw a $300 reel on here as a suggestion if you think it’s worth the extra $$$. Thanks in advance!!
  6. So I just got a baitcasting setup and I'm a pretty casual fisherman so I have no clue what I'm doing. I've read all the articles and such and adjusted my spool tension to match my bait(I throw mostly senkos which are about 3/8 oz). I have my brakes around 7-9 out of 9 total brakes. However, even with smooth motions I still end up backlashing when I do overhead casts, and it is often mid cast even though I'm thumbing the spool and making it stop before it hits the water. Any tips on how to fix this? Also, using the measure distance tool on google maps, I estimated that in general I'm only casting around 25 yards tops(usually around 20-25 yds). And I've heard that most people can throw most lures around 30-40 yards. Casting distance is needed for me since I fish from the shore on ponds and some areas are inaccessible on foot. On my spinning setup which is just a 50$ combo from bass pro I can cast around 30 yds pretty easily. And I thought that baitcasters in general cast further than spinning rods. As for my equipment, I didn't buy anything super expensive since I'm just a casual fisherman. Rod- *** Fate Chrome 7'1" Medium power Extra fast action. Lure weight 1/4oz to 3/4oz or something like that Reel- KastKing assassin (I heard good reviews about this reel) Line- Powerpro super 8 slick 20lb braid.
  7. I was curious as to what the best uses for this reel are. I’ve been using it for a little while now, but I’m not necessarily sure what techniques it’s really MEANT for. Of course, the shallower spool will have something to do with it. The description on Daiwa’s site, and some other places, vs people’s personal experiences have confused me. Can it handle heavier applications or is it meant only for lighter/finesse applications? I own this, a zillion, and the new SS Air TW, so this will decide whether or not I keep this reel. Otherwise I plan to sell it and use it to buy a spinning for dropshot/free rig, etc… Thank you all in advance, any information is appreciated.
  8. I found an old Abu Garcia Ambassador 4600 CB in my shed, my granddad had given it to me. It’s from the 70s or 80s. It’s gear ratio is 4.7:1, what could I use this reel for?
  9. This is my first time using this website so here it goes. I believe my mach crush magnetic brakes are not working because no matter if the brake are at 10 or 1 the casting distance is the same and it is still pretty difficult to get a back lash. My spool tension and drag is set properly so I’m not sure what the problem is.
  10. My Lews BB2 Speed Spool and my Daiwa Squeaks when i reel line in when fishing. Idk what the problem is, is it the bearings? Been like this for a month and cant find the problem. Thanks
  11. Hello, I’m having problems With my reel I spooled it up with mono backing to my braid and everything is working just fine now thank you everyone for the help, now when I tighten my reels drag star when I pull the line out it’s making like a loud almost screeching sound while I pull the line out only on the tight drag setting now the low drag, it’s a lews speed spool and just has the standard magnetic breaks please feel free to leave your suggestions bellow thanks Marcus.
  12. Hello I’m new to the forums and looking for help. When I’m spooling my baitcater reel after I’m done half the line is tangled or knotted in its self and when I’m pulling it back it’s almost like the line is peeling out from like the back opposite side of the baitcaster reel. It is only doing this for braid I spooled up a reel yesterday with fluorocarbon and it was super easy. Does anyone know what I can do to prevent this thx Marcus.
  13. I have a Lews Mach series rod 6'10 medium heavy moderate action rod Abu Garcia vengence 6'9 medium heavy rod Lews American hero speed spool (LH) with 7:1:1 gear ratio I am trying to seel PM in interested.
  14. Hey guys I have a Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier baitcasting reel and I am having some issues with it. I have had it about a year and I have never had a problem with it until now. All of a sudden it will not engage and reel in my line. I click the button throw it out and let the bait hit then water but when I go to reel it back in won't engage to reel in my line. I am turning the reel and the line threader thing is moving but the spool is not turning. If I hit it hard on the side a few times it will click and engage and I can reel it back in. Any advice on how to fix this problem would be a great help! Also what do you guys think of the Pro Qualifier. It is the first and only baitcaster I have ever owned and until now I have loved it. Thanks!
  15. So late last year I was given a vintage Langley Lakecast Baitcaster and am having a hard time deciding what to do with it. I did spool it with some 10lb mono and gave it a whirl at a local pond but stopped because I just didn’t want to take the chance of ruining it. Still has all original parts, clicker switch still works and all. I hate to see it sit on a shelf but I don’t know if I want to risk breaking if. I just have a dream of landing at least one or two on it. Thoughts?
  16. Hi There, I’ve been fishing for a couple years now but am only recently getting into baitcasters. I currently own a Shimano SLX DC and love it. Looking to purchase another baitcaster. The two I’m heavily considering are the lews tournament pro ($200) and the Shimano Chronarch ($280). I know they are in two different price ranges but they both have great reviews. Once I get this baitcaster, I’ll have 3 combos total. That being said, I need a reel that can handle most everything. What seems interesting about the lews is it has 20lbs of drag. I was thinking with my limited arsenal, this would be a good differentiator. I could use this more for frogging along with cranks and such. Its also not a Shimano which would be fun to branch out and try another brand. The Shimano Chronarch is apparently an awesome reel that is super smooth and well built. At 11 lbs of drag it’s less than the lews but still a workhorse. A bit pricier too but I’ve loved my SLX. Also, everyone who does own this seems to love it!! Overall, I just want a dependable reel that can cover a variety of applications. I’ve gone froggin in the pads with my SLX DC and it’s been just fine. Just looking for advice and different points of view! Any suggestions are welcome!!
  17. For long time Shimano casting reel owners, how does high priced reels from the early 90s/2000s like the Core/Chronarch compare to cheaper reels today like Curado & SLX? I know the tech has made its way down the product line like DC, X-ship, MGL, but could a Curado 70 K today outcast a core 50? Is the SLX MGL better than a Chronarch D? I’m curious specifically about comparing build quality, cast distance, and quality/power of retrieve. Here is a list to get the ideas flowing. Caenan SLX , DC, MGL Curado, bantam , E, G, K Chronarch D, E, G, ci4, MGL Bantam MGL Aldebaren Core 50, 100 Metanium DC, MGL, B MGL Antares Surprise challenge: Can we have a topic like this without bringing up the whole Curado G vs Chronarch E thing ?‍♂️? Shimano dun messed up with that one. thanks!
  18. Novice spare parts question here. Couldn't find an exact answer to this by searching, appreciate any guidance. I am looking to buy a spare spool for my Bantam MGL151XG, exact model link below with parts list: https://fishshop.shimano.com/collections/bantmgl151xg If I buy the "Spool Assembly" part # BNT5805, can anyone confirm this will include all sub-components so I can just swap out with the current spool as needed to change lines? The term assembly is suggestive that this would be the case but would like some reassurance before dropping the $. I am looking for the simplest solution to swap braid and copoly on the water, but I don't want to get into moving bearings between spools or anything beyond removing side plate for a quick swap. Obviously not the most technical reel guy. Appreciate any responses!
  19. Just looking to see if anybody on here has tried these rods, they retail for $150 I believe. I came across them because TW is doing a giveaway of 3 of this series and so I looked into em, they have 4 or 5 solid reviews on TW that seem legit. Curious if they're as good as those people say, starting to look around for a new set up and that's right in my ball park for a rod. Tight lines H
  20. Hello, I’m looking for some help regarding my Shimano Casitas 150HG. The reel casts fine, but when I turn the handle to reel it makes a somewhat loud noise. Im pretty sure it’s the bearing but my question is what bearing should I replace? And does anyone know the size? Thank you
  21. I am new to baitcasters and I did a lot research and decided to go with the Shimano SLX DC 150HG. I have watched tons of videos on casting and how to fine tune and as far as I can tell I’m all set up just fine. I also bought a new pole it a Dobyns fury series. 7ft 1pc 8-17lb med/heavy mod-fast action. The line is 12lb braided. almost every cast I get a backlash even on setting 4 where backlashes are suppose to not happen. In all the videos I watched people are throwing out lures 100+ feet and not even thumbing it. I am getting the backlash as soon as I cast and the few times I don’t I get maybe 20-30ft and half of those times it backlashes after the cast. I turned the knob so the spook stops going left to right like everywhere says. one thing I tried was ignoring that and tuning it to the lure so when it falls it doesn’t backlash but that did not help. I don’t know what’s wrong. Any help with this would be very much appreciated.
  22. I just bought my son a Lew's Speed Spool LFS (SS1SHA70MH) for graduation. It's rated at 120/12 line capacity. I'm new to baitcasters and am looking to get him spooled up with the best possible line. He will be doing bass fishing in fairly, sometimes pretty, heavy cover with a ton of pike around. Am I right to buy 30# braid with 12# fluoro leader? Or would 30# braid with 15# fluoro leader? Also, he will have the ability to use swimming baits as cover allows. Is 30# braid and 12# fluoro leader right for occasional swimbaits on this 120/12 reel? I'm trying to keep in mind the 120/12 line capacity but am struggling to find diameter charts for mono vs. fluoro vs. braid. I would appreciate any and all feedback! Thanks!!!
  23. So I finally set up my baitcaster to a point where I don't backlash very often(Thanks to bass resource forum for the tips). And now I want to focus on getting more distance. I have a pretty beginner setup so I know I won't be able to cast as far as a supertuned $300 reel, but I was wondering how far you can cast a wacky rig senko usually without any wind. I've been measuring my distance using google maps and I would say I can cast a senko around 25 yds, 70-80 feet usually. I tried an even lighter spinnerbait 3/16 oz and I could cast further, around 30 yds maybe approaching 100 feet(I literally casted to the ground on the other side of the pond). It was weird since this lure is in fact lighter than my previous lure. My rod is 7'1 medium extra fast and rated for 1/4 oz to 3/4 oz so a senko fits that range better than the spinnerbait even. My reel has dual brakes and I've turned the magnetics off completely since they seem useless and I keep 2 pins out of 6 on for the centrifugal brakes. I heard most people generally cast 30-40 yds on average but honestly I don't know if I could get a senko that far. The tension is as loose as it can be without the spool wobbling, and the only other thing I can do is turn all the brakes completely off, but then I would backlash more frequently. I feel like maybe I have unrealistic expectations...maybe a senko doesn't travel as well as a spinnerbait or such? I know I might be able to get 30-40 with other baits and lots of practice, but even getting 30 with a senko seems like a challenge. Is there something I need to change in my casting motion, because I've tried to cast such that the bait spends a longer time in the air but it doesn't really net me any more distance. Any thoughts?
  24. Hi all, I tried my brand new Shimano Scorpion JDM today and I have a feeling something was seriously off with adjustments or my setup. These reels are notorious for super long casting but mine was anything but... I am a Daiwa guy - had multiple Daiwa baitcasters over the years and this Shimano was hands down inferior to all three I had with me today. The reel is pared with St Croix Mojo Bass 7 footer rated for up to 17 mono lb line and up to 3/4 lure. I spooled the reel with 30 lb braid and I was casting a 1/2 chatterbait with a trailer. Should be flying like a bullet, right? Nope. I ended up turning all breaks off and during casts I literally saw the spool stopping while the lure had tons of momentum and tried to fly further. It also was making squeaking sounds while casting unlike my other reels. And I attempted to release the tension knob as much as I could lest it begins birdnesting. Now when I unboxed it everything was in perfect order and when the tension knob wasn’t tight the spool wouldn’t stop spinning forever. Like no friction at all, silky smooth. Could it be that braid was a bad choice? I plan to try a 12 lb mono tomorrow just to see if it changes anything. Something was fishy (no pun intended) about that braid and the way it behaved on the spool. Ok, I am done with the rant. Thank you all in advance for your input. Take care, Val
  25. After I’m done fishing in freshwater, should I do anything to clean my rod and reel? Will the baitcaster reel corrode if I don’t clean it?Also is it ok to keep the hook on the rod or should I take that off? Thank you in advance.
