  1. Hey all, I just upgraded a St. Croix MOJO Bass to a Victory - I was on the spot to upgrade and already have a few MH-F so I went with a Medium Heavy Moderate Fast instead, because I have none. I also have no experience with that action. I've seen it touted as a good chatterbait/spinnerbait rod, but I was wondering if it could also make for a good bottom contact rod (sensitive enough)? What do yall use a MH-MF rod for? Thanks yall
  2. Hi guys I’ve had a tremendous amount of success on jerkbaits this year and purchased my first lure specific combo because of how much year round success I have had on them. I usually use the berkley Stunna and I tend to do really well making the lure do a walk the dog motion back and forth then every 10-12 ft popping the weight transfer bb so it makes the bait fall tail first back to the fish. However watching a tactical bass on video their jerkbaits did just hops forward sitting nose down and it seems those guys really know what they’re doing. Even when I use other baits like rhe Kvds rappala shadow rap and vision 110 I go for that side to side gliding motion. Am have I been fishing this wrong this whole time ? I catch tons of fish on them and they have become a huge confidence bait for me. But am I working them wrong , should I look for a more straight line approach? What do you guys try to make your jerkbaits do
  3. I know questions about the Tidemaster may be better suited to a saltwater forum, but I am sure a lot of you guys have experience with this rod that I'd like to hear. I have the 6'6" MHF Casting (1/2- 1 1/4) and absolutely love it! It's a great light inshore rod when you want to throw small diamond jigs and other lures with a LP baitcasting reel, and also doubles as a decent "do all" largemouth rod, especially when pond bank fishing and the 7 footers stay home. The tip is a definitely a bit heavy for a primary largemouth rod, but this is sometimes welcome in NJ when the vegetation gets out of control. The "Fast" action on this series is very unique to me. It is definitely not Avid fast, but I wouldn't say it's a mod-fast either. I like it for casting/football/bladed jigs a lot. Now that St Croix seems to be phasing out this fan favorite series, I am thinking of picking up one or two more in different lengths/actions/powers etc (spinning and/or casting) just because I like the rod so much. I was hoping to hear from anyone who owns other particular models of the Tidemaster that are worth checking out, or are just gems. I know this is a very broad and general question, but I fish for largemouth, stripers/summer flounder in bays and the surf, and bluefish inshore as well, so I could make use of many different rods in the series. Here are some models I have been thinking about and their potential applications for me.. (have not had the chance to hold in hand yet): 7'0" Casting M Power, Fast (3/8- 3/4) - Small spoons for smaller bluefish; double as a decent freshwater swimjig rod 8'0" Spinning MH or H, Fast (1/2-2 or 3/4-3) - Light surf rod for lighter plugs/SP minnows/bucktails Appreciate any insights on the 2-3 specific models I listed above, but more just interested in starting a discussion about this awesome series: What model Tidemasters to do you have? What do you use them for? Which one(s) would you add to your arsenal if this rod became harder to find soon?
  4. I'm curious as to the specific benefit of the Fast Taper action? I have a Lew's Mach1 Speed Stick combo that I've owned for about 3 years. It's an IM8 rod that's MH Fast Taper 7'3" 7.5:1 ratio. What's the benefit of the fast taper over the regular taper?
  5. Is there a rod size/ action/ power that would work well for both trout and crappie? I mostly fish for bass and would like to add just one rod that could be used for crappie and trout- is that possible? Price would be under $100 for rod and reel. I would be fishing mostly in ponds but would want to try streams for trout. Thanks guys!
  6. As my rod and reel arsenal grows, I’ve been looking into some specific rods for a few of my techniques. One will be strictly a lipless crankbait rod. Looking for something around 7’3”. Nothing shorter than 7’. I mostly throw 1/4oz SK RES, but I also use 1/2oz on occasion. I also like the original trap when they like a fast paced, steady retrieve and I only use the 1/2oz. I would prefer a medium heavy action bc I like the backbone for fishing grass and submerged cover, so a 1/4oz-3/4oz or 1/4oz-1oz rating seems about right. Either a moderate or moderate fast action. Just a little bit of give in the tip to avoid pulling hooks. My main concern is the weight of the rod. I’m normally making super long casts and burning it back trying to find fish and usually once I find them I just keep throwing it bc I have so much confidence in it. Needless to say, I’m looking for the lightest rod I can get away with. Thanks in advance for any opinions. Looking forward to seeing some of y’all’s recommendations.
  7. I know all the fishermen go crazy about the action, the "wiggle" of stick baits and such. I was wondering have there been any studies done with bass in a controlled environment presented with lures with different action to see if the bass react differently. I did a quick Google search but couldn't find much. I ask this because to me it seems more that fisherman are more enamored by the action of a lure than a bass might be. The ever so slight different in the wiggle between say a senko and dinger drives fisherman crazy! But do they actually drive bass crazy? For me personally, I seem to catch the same amount of fish on any stick bait, and the more important factor is probably sink rate because it sinks to the bottom faster, and since I'm relatively impatient this helps a lot.
  8. Hello, I am new the the world of freshwater and Baitcasting. I have a reel on the way to my house and was trying to decide on a rod. I am looking for a medium/heavy rod preferably with a cork Handel. Price range around 30 dollars. Any advice? Whatever helps.
  9. So, while I have fallen victim to my share of broken lines and lost lures, I often wonder whether or not I’m pairing my line with the right tackle; obviously not! In my search for answers, very specific answers at that, I’ve come across what seems to have been the most thorough and yet efficient article on ‘bassfishin’ website titled fishing-line-guide [I couldn’t add link for some reason]. I mean, yes!!! Finally, a very detailed article, but... wow! I couldn’t help but feeling like my three rod, three reel arsenal will get me no where. I realize that there ideal setups per technique or presentation but where’s the middle of the road? How can I make the most out of a reel without having to switch out the line with each lure change? For example, if one of my rod and reel combos can work many techniques and handle (obviously) the weight of many lures but technically based on the article requires a different line for each, how do I get around having to switch out the line? Does anyone have better recommendations? I fish (freshwater) with monofilament because I’m fairly new to fishing and that’s what’s always recommended to me. My current reels and rods are as follows: G.Loomis Mag Bass 782c 6’6” Med Fast Mag Bass 844c 7’ Heavy Fast Crankbait 864C DF 7’2” Med-Heavy Mod Shimano Chronarch 200E7 7.0:1 Curado K 6.2:1 & 8.5:1
  10. So, I've got a few rods that I'm looking to pair with the best possible baitcaster possible (obviously subjective when discussing brands). That said, wanted to get an idea as to how I should choose the right reel to match a specific rod. Example, I have G.Loomis MBR844c Heavy Fast... how do I choose the proper reel? I assume that it can withstand a greater fight than my MBR782c Medium Fast that I paired with a Chronarch 200e7. So once again I'm trying to figure out what real peers with each specific flex from Med to Extra Heavy. Thanks!
  11. Hey guys im going to get a new rod, the Powell Max 3d mag bass 7'3 Heavy Xtra Fast action.. Do yall think this would be too much for pitching with braid(not flipping...). If so please tell me why.. Thanks
  12. Im just curious as to what type of fishing a hvy power xf casting rod at 7'6" would be good for? I went to bass pro and saw the johnny morris platinum rods in mh and hvy and the only action the hvy rods come in is xf. ...new to this forum
  13. Hey guys I have a Powell max3d in 6'8 mh extra fast and I've had it for about 4 months now and for some reason it has gone from a mh x fast to like a medium medium.. I baby my rod and take good care of it and I don't know how this happened, if you know what's wrong please tell me thanks:)
  14. Just a little something I came up with while at work, feel free to share. Looking back several years ago this would have been very helpful for a young starting out me. Not sure if anyone has ever made one of these on here but I have never seen one. Enjoy!
  15. How much of a difference is there between the two a ( Mod/Fast tip and Extra Heavy Power) over a standard fast action tip with (Extra Heavy power.) as I. Needed for only flipping and forging but no punching in the 5 pound weeds.
  16. so i see some people say that they use a medium light or whatever rod for their "treble hook" lures... do you use the same rod for topwater trebles also? would my 7ft veritas winch series be useful for topwater poppers? is a crankin rod okay for this application?
  17. Hey bassresource users. So, my St. Croix premier snapped in half while trying to free a snag. /: I've Been looking on St. Croix website and seen their gold star upgrade plan. I'm looking for a spinning rod to fish soft plastics and small football jigs nothing bigger than 1/2oz.. I'll mainly be using T-Rig and drop-Shot techniques.. Maybe some weightless flukes/super flukes The Avid series caught my attention. Now I need help choosing the best model for it.. I prefer a rod at least 6'6 and nothing over 7'. Which do you guys recommend? Also, how do the original Avids compare to the Avid X in terms of feel and sensitivity. Thanks For your help. Hopefully I can choose soon because I just sent out my premier to the repair center today.
  18. What is the best type of Rod to use in order to fully utilize Zara Spooks? (Power and Action)
  19. I'm looking for a spinning rod to pair with a pflueger president 6930 or 6935. I plan on only having one spinning combo in my yak so i need something pretty versatile. Something that will cover wacky worms, small texas rigs, spinnerbits 1/4 oz. and smaller, anything too small for a baitcaster. I know extra-fast action is best for wacky worming but will that be sufficient for small spinnerbaits? I'm thinking a meium power, would you suggest 6'6, 6'8, or 7'? I know I will either purchase an abu garcia veritas, st. croix mojo bass, or st. croix premier. Say I decided on the mojo bass, would the wacky worm or tubes and grubs model be best? I know this was a lot of questions so thank you to anyone who offers some help.
  20. I have suddenly noticed a shift in the descriptive language of lures. More and more, I am seeing phrases like: "a seductive shimmy," "sexy action," "an enticing wiggle," "an attractive color," "tempting vibrations," "irresistible movement," and "provocative presentation." I understand there are some similarities between women and bass, such as often releasing many before finding a few worth keeping, inevitable backlashes in the pursuit of them, the testing of one's patience, often being impossible to work with, and being able to so easily entice a man into obsession, but although I love a skilled conversationalist, I don't find massive mouths, extreme aggression and the ability to eat something 1/3 their body size to be attractive traits in women. Are we undergoing a shift in fishing style? Are we done offering false food items, and instead seeking to seduce bass? If so, we should stop using green pumpkin and bluegill jigs and throw pink voltage lipstick jig heads with a sexy-curvy shad skirt instead. No more baby bass crankbaits, you'd be better off with baby momma bass cranks featuring a sensual shimmy and promiscous wiggle. During the spawn, no more senkos, try instead an Xtra large driftwood on a 5/0 hook with ADT salamander shield security system and bodyguard swim baits to fool bass into believing that your offering might protect their fry from those bluegill ruffians. After all, raising 10,000 fry is so hard for a single male in this economy; what they want isn't food, but security. What about you, what is your experience with this bold new world of bass allurement? I would go on, but it is imperative I start smearing lip gloss om my swimbaits. Ciao
  21. Alright, I'm not getting some very good responses/none at all on my other post. This one is a little more general sounding. Alright so I'm looking at a worm and jig rod. It may not be the best rod, but I'm getting a great deal on it. My question is what would be better an xfast action or fast action to use this for jigs and plastics (mostly texas rigs.) I will use it all year round and in the summer in pretty deep water 15ft+. The rod is a Shimano Clarus 6'8" med heavy xfast or fast action. Which one should i get, which will give me the best sensitivity, best visible tip detection, be the best for these applications, and not be overkill that i set the hook way too hard lol. Thanks, Zach
  22. WHich do you prefer tight or wide action crankbaits and when...and in what cover. How would you tell in store the action a crankbait would have. I have never seen why somebody would want a tight action and as such i gravitate more towards stickbaits than shad crank unless they are sharebills. What aboud you?
  23. I am quite cleless as to which is better for bass. I have never understood why a tight wiggle action crankbait could be more effection than the alternative and so I throw quite a few stickbaits. Which is better for what situation and why
  24. Could I use an old 7' jig/worm rrod?
