  1. What are everyone's thoughts about the new St Croix Victory series? Did you buy one? I'm purposely holding off until I read more reviews on them. I've heard mixed reviews. I'm in the market for a crankbait rod and I don't know whether I like the 7'2" MH Power Target Crank rod or if I should go with a MH Legend Glass rod instead... what have you heard about the new rod series (any model)? Do you own any Legend Glass rods? Or mojo glass? Should I go with the tried and true or try something new?
  2. Recently picked up one of the new model St Croix legend tournament spinning rods. The 8’6” MLXF Dropshot/Hair Jig rod. I paired it with a Shimano Sustain 4000XG spooled up with 10lb braid to 6lb tatsu leader. I’m excited to try it out dropshotting some fall smallies this weekend. My current dropshot rod is a 7’6 MLXF Avid, and I’ve really grown to like the extra length... I decided to push it even further with this new offering from St. Croix... will be interested to see if there’s a point of diminishing returns on rod length for this application. My first impressions are that it balances quite nicely with the 4000 size reel, but I think it would be too tip heavy with a smaller reel. Anyone had a chance to fish this rod yet? If so, what were your impressions? I’ll report back with more thoughts and a more thorough review if people are interested.
  3. I currently have a spinning setup that I only use for 4" or 5" texas rigged or wacky rigged weightless Senkos. It's a St. Croix Avid X 68MXF paired with a Stradic Ci4+ 2500. It's been great and I've landed some nice fish on the setup, but the reel seat hurts my hand after a long period of time. I'd like to upgrade to a Shimano Expride or Poison Adrena but would like some advice from those in the know. I'm looking at shorter rods which I prefer for this technique so I think the Expride 68mxf would be best. Now, on the Adrena, I'm confused, what is the best length and power rod for weightless Senkos? 611mh?
  4. Well I've been on a journey the last couple years trying different brands. Here is my thoughts and what I ended up falling in love with!! I start with an Abu Ultra Max and loved it but wanted to upgrade, so I tried a lews MCR laser and absolutely hated the thing so after it blew up I switched to Diawa Tatula CT, it was okay but had issues with the drag as I like to throw baits into heavy cover and would catch fish fine , but never had enough power to get the big girls out and after a while started to slip, so I moved to the Shimano curado K and liked it till the hearing and grindy feeling or noise just started to annoy me so I gave that to a buddy not long ago. I bought 2 BPS Johnny Morris reels and rods April/may 2020 (for time frame.) There WERE amazing out the box but that's where it ended. The rods and reels where the carbon lite 2.0 and signature series. Well after 8 to 10 hours of use everyday for 3 weeks the first to go was the carbon lite 2.0 combo the rod was good but I hated hook keeper location and the reel was smooth on retrieve but sounded like a bad diesel truck on the cast and it only ever saw soft plastics weighted at 1/4oz at the most. Ended up being the duralumin gears or whatever they call it has cracked and crumbled. Next a few days after the Johnny Morris signature combo its looks amazing but.... it completely locked up mid cast and never worked again... the gears shattered and froze the reel, also the rod was beautiful but the actions fished way heavier than its ratings. Basically a broom stick for MHXF. Now my all time favorite reel is my Abu STX gen 4 but its 25ft down in water and muck next to snapping turtles den ( disabled vet, I had muscle spasms only yak) I cried that day lol watching her sink like the titanic. So any ways this morning I took my BPS Johnny Morris combos back to BPS with receipt, they have me full refunds and I ended up getting 2 Abu Garcia Gen4 revo SXs in 7:3.1 and paired them up with 2 st croix mojo bass in Medium power fast action handset me tell you what... the power is unreal as well as the sensitivity in the rods and my God are they accurate and the sx can cast a country mile!! I love this combo so much I'm go na but 2 more but in medium heavy. Now I can feel and see that this combo will serve me well for many years to come. Hell I still throw my old faithfuls an Abu pro max3 and black max that go to hell and back on pond hoping days. My rods have always been veritas or curado or dobyns fury rods. Of all the rods I have, I'd say the mojo bass is my favorite followed by dobyns then veritas and curado. I know this isn't a good blog as to why but... my general thoughts where Diawa and shimano are good but lack drag and power to get em out the cover and timber in the lakes and ponds I fish.... and diawa thimb bara break, shimano gets gritty even slx Lews both the MCS and mach series just didnt impress me and didnt like them at all. I tried quantum, nothing to write home about BPS Johnny Morris series lool beautiful but are IMO b.s. junk and no way has any reel I ever had blow up in 2 to 3 weeks. Now my abus ja e never ever failed me, maybe I'm lucky IDK.... but the SX feels just as good as my STXs and my pro max and black max just keep kicking. I clean and oil my reels once a month as I'm a disabled vet (Iraq) so I fish everyday 8 to 10 hours. So I'm def an Abu believe now. And will be all I throw. As far as rods go my favorite has always been dobyns till I got the mojo bass today wow I thought for the price it'd be hard to beat dobyns but I swear you can feel a fish fart with that rod. So that's my hear story for today. Been fishing for quite a few years now and each reel minus Johnny Morris had a good 6 month to 1 year run before i made a decision. Hope this helps some of yall. Also my criteria for reels are IPT OR LINE PICK UP DRAG/POWER ABILITY TO CAST weightless plastics. So as of now Abu is my go to and say croix is my new favorite rod. If this made no sense I apologize
  5. From time to time, I get requests to replace grips and reel seats. Most of the time, it's really not worth it because the repair costs more than the original rod. That wasn't the case this time. The customer absolutely hated the OEM seat on his Legend Elite spinning rod. After seeing it, I understood why. Such excessive threads. They really could have trimmed at least an inch off before assembly, but they didn't. Even if they would have taken some threads off, the seat is uncomfortable for someone with large hands. He liked the IPS seat and hidden threads locking foregrip on the Dobyns Champion rods, so that's the direction we went. I missed taking some pics as I went, like boring, splitting and gluing the arbor on the blank. Original seat and grip. Stripped and cleaned up. Had to extend the IPS grip to maintain the original reel seat location. Locking foregrip. New seat glued in position. New grip and butt cap installed and curing. All finished up.
  6. Im looking to buy a new jig rod for bass fishing. I have a deal on a used LTB rod but I'm not a fan of the grips. I like the looks and lightness of the Avid x but I'm not sure about the sensitivity. Has anyone used both and could tell major difference in the sensitivity of the rod? Rod would be 7' or 7'1'' mhf or mhxf
  7. Hello I would like to purchase a new shakyhead rod for this coming season. I am currently thinking either the G Loomis shakyhead spinning rod GLX series or the St. Croix Legend X rod. I will not spend $400 on a rod without first putting it in my hands to evaluate the feel. Problem is that I cannot find anyone who stocks these rods near Virginia. Does anyone know of a way for me to look at these rods?
  8. I currently do 90% of my fishing from my yak and this summer have been mainly fishing creeks, rivers and on occasion small lakes. I'm constantly close to shore and sometimes have to deal with trees to get in spots to fish. My setup now for jigs/texas rigs is a St. Croix Avid 6'8" MH paired with a Curado K. I'm still fairly new to pitching, especially from a sitting position in a kayak. I've been practicing as much as possible, even sitting on a stool in the yard with a practice plug to get better. Well the rod/reel Gorilla has been tapping me on the shoulder and with TW BF sale on the horizon I have the itch for a new setup. I'm considering a longer rod, and looking at either a Legend Tournament or a Loomis IMX pro or maybe even splurging for a Legend X or GLX. So, those who have experience with a longer rod for pitching what do you think? Should I upgrade to a 7' - 7'-5" length rod? Or should I spend the money elsewhere and be happy with my current setup? Also, for pitching what is your preference, full cork or split grip? For a reel, would you stick with the Curado K or would my technique be improved by going with a different reel? I'm open to Shimano or Daiwa when it comes to my reel choice but prefer Shimano.
  9. So I started fishing again this summer, was starting for scratch and I decided to get a spinning rod and reel. I wound up doing some reading and fell upon a St. Croix Mojo Bass 7' MM and a Shimano Stradic Ci4+. One day about a month back me and my daughter were out fishing, and the tip of the rod snapped 3 eyelets down. I was real upset, but I saw what happened and my daughter was just taking maybe a half pound worth of weeds out of the water on her lure to clean them off and it snapped. So I contacted St. Croix, sent them the rod. They called me up after receiving it, I explained what happened. I said to them I was a little weary on getting another Mojo Bass as I was afraid of something similar happening again and thought I should get something stronger if possible, and asked them if I could upgrade. Well being the upstanding company they are, they let me upgrade to a Legend Tournament and even waived the upgrade fee and shipping return. I was super exited, the rod came in today. Just got home from class around 8pm and decided to go outback and fish. Within 5 minutes i stuck this 4.5lb pig, the rod felt so good, responsive. I felt him clamp onto the lure. It's super light as well.
  10. Here's my dilemma, I found a used but excellent condition rod FS locally and trying to justify the purchase. I do 90% of fishing out of my kayak and was really trying to keep it minimal on how many rods I take an outing. I was hoping to keep it at 4, maybe 5. Anyways, I can get a Mojo Bass 68MXF topwater for a steal, but don't really know if I can justify it as I have a very similar rod in the Avid. Could I use the Mojo for strictly topwater and relegate the Avid to Spinnerbaits/Buzzbaits? What would you all throw on the Avid and Mojo? I know I'll kick myself later for not buying it and I'll more than likely go get it today. Just looking for some advice on what to use it for, haha Here is my current kayak arsenal. 11. Ok I’m tired of crap gear and so I’ve decided to spend the money to finally get something decent and dependable. After much research I’ve decided to get the Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 3000 FB and I’m trying to decide on a rod to pair it with. I’m looking at the St. Croix Avid X Spinning Rod (AXS70MF). My only decision is which model of the Avid X to get? Their site lists several, but I’m partial to the 7ft models. They have medium/fast, medium light/fast and medium heavy/fast. I also want a single piece rod. Anyone have any experience with these Avid X rods? Just looking for some advice on which one to pair with the Stradic.
  12. Hello all, I am looking at the St. Croix Legend Elite And Legend X. I recently posted a thread about “High End Rods” And had a lot of good comments on the Megabass Daemos as well as a couple other rod brands. Now I am looking at the legend Elite And Legend X.
  13. Hey all - I am looking to start throwing bigger baits this year and after doing a great deal of research, I decided on the 2018 St. Croix Legend Tournament Bass 7'10" H/F which is rated for 1-4oz baits. I plan to throw an assortment of jig-hook baits as well as small to mid-size treble-hook baits (mainly glides, including my own handcrafts from 4ish to 1oz like this one). I'm wondering if the Shimano Tranx 300A (5.8:1, 30" IPT) is a good choice to pair with this rod and the 'smaller' baits I may throw on it. The SuperDuty Wide Spool, Tatula HD, and Lexa 300 HD have all caught my attention as well, but I can get my hands on a new Tranx for about $80 under retail. My biggest concern is that the Tranx may be overpowered for what I plan to throw. Thanks for any help.
  14. I plan on adding drop shotting to my arsenal this year. I don’t want to spend too much money on a rod out the gate since I don’t know if I will even like the technique. The two rods I have narrowed down to is the Enigma Aaron’s Edge 6’10” ML/XF ($119) and the St Croix Mojo Bass 6’10” ML/XF ($130). The Enigma rod is a little cheaper but has a microwave guide which I have no experience with and I wonder if they get tricky with leader knots since I will be using braid and a flouro leader. Which one would you recommend and I would gladly take any other rod suggestions around the same price range.
  15. Hey guys So I have an opportunity to buy 2 rods at a nicely discounted price through my job, Abu Garcia Veritas & St Croix Avid. The 1st rod I'm looking for to handle Squarebills, mid depth cranks, and heavy Suspending jerkbait (Crush 75x, 250MD, Pointer 100XD). The second rod I want exclusively for deep diving cranks (6th Sense 500DD, maybe 10XD). Here's what my thinking is, Id appreciate your thoughts. Rod #1: St. Croix Avid X (7' MH/M) -Squarebills (6th Sense Crush Flat 75X) -Mid-depth (6th Sense Crush 250MD) -Suspending jerkbaits (LC Pointer 100XD) Rod #2: Abu Garcia Veritas (7'11 XH/M) -6th Sense 500DD -Strike King 10XD Are these decent rods for those applications? I'd really like to know what you all think! Thanks : )
  16. Does anyone have the 7'4" Heavy, Fast Action, St. Croix Mojo Bass? If so, does anyone pitch with it? Wondering if it's good with braid and sensitive enough for pitching?
  17. So I've always been a St. Croix fan... my whole lineup is pretty much a mix of different St. Croix lines.. until I recently bought a Dobyns Champion HP 784ML Jig rod... I bought it for football jigs and I really wanted the extra length and XF taper, which wasn't available in St. Croixs lineup. I'm sure I could've found something fairly close in St. Croixs lineup, but their rods that are designed for similar "finesse jig" techniques are more like 7'1 not 7'8. Anyways, I LOVE that new dobyns rod... great blank for a whole variety of baits... Now I'm looking for another Medium Heavy Fast or Extra Fast jig rod in more like a 7'-7'5 length... pretty much want the most sensitive rod I can reasonably afford... like to keep it under 400 so I'm taking the NRX out of the equation.. As much as I like the Dobyns 784 I've read that both St. Croix and Loomis offer blanks that are noticeably more sensitive.. So that's got me comparing a Legend Elite and a GLX JWR ... anyone have both or fished with both and care to weigh in on which they like more and why? I also want it to have a full cork grip.. I don't mind split grips but really prefer full cork on my jig rods. Final question is whether or not the upgrade to SCV or GLX from an SCIII (7' St. Croix Avid) is worth doubling the price for? I realize that's a personal question.. but I'm asking for your opinions I suppose. I fish a lot of Avid series rods and certainly don't have too many complaints.. my biggest complaint would be the lack of lengths/technique specific tapers in the rod lineup.. I'd be stuck with a 7' MHF avid whereas if I upgraded to a Legend Elite or GLX JWR I'd have more options for lengths and different rod tapers. Any insight is appreciated... Thanks guys!
  18. Hey All! new to the site. looking to make an addition to my stable of baitcasters (currently only one lol). Price range is flexible but shooting for 300-400ish. Was hoping I could list my rods/ reel combos then get some tips to compliment my current gear. 6'6" St. Croix premiere MF spinning rod with shimano reel, and 7' MF *** baitcaster with a lews reel. I'm thinking of a 7'2" or 7'3" MH-F for jigs and maybe t-rigs? I really have had success fish with Senkos but I think my 7 footer might be plenty good for that. I'm looking for rod/ reel suggestions so the more the merrier!
  19. Hey BR, What is a good UL spinning rod and a good UL spinning reel for panfish(smaller bass included)? Thanks, Big Fish Small Pond
  20. Hey BR, What rods are you guys pairing your Pflueger President 6930 Spinning Reels with? Also, what rods are you guys pairing your Shimano Stradic 2500 Spinning Reels with? Thanks, Big Fish Small Pond
  21. Any recommendations for a M/F or ML/XF Spinning Rod under $100 would be much appreciated. I am doing some of my own research, buy would like to get input from you guys at BR. Thanks, Big Fish Small Pond
  22. Hello, new to the forum. I've found a lot of good info on here through Google so figured I should sign up for some advice. Recently I got a new spinning setup. St. Croix Triumph 6'6" 2 piece rod and a Mitchell 308 Pro. I have to say I am really liking the setup except for one major problem...getting some absolutely nasty tangles when casting. They're usually so bad I lose at least 20 yards of line each time. It's almost like a bird nest outside the reel. The only reason I can come up with is that the line is somehow getting hung up on a guide. It's almost like a bird nest outside the reel. When casting, I'll hear a clunk, the line will bunch up...yet somehow still make it through the guides. I'll reel in and have a giant clump somewhere in my line. I've inspected the rod, can't find any problems with it. On my previous reel, a Pflueger president, I'd sometime get similar tangles after over-spooling the reel. However after losing so much line on my Mitchell, it is still happening with 1/2" or more of space between the rim and line on the spool. At first I thought it had to do with line memory, so I switched from fluoro to mono, 8lb test or 10lb if it has the same diameter of 8lb. Tangles still happening. Tried Berkley Nanofil yesterday, some very low memory line. However 3rd cast with a brand new Rapala, line clumped up and lure snapped right off and flew into the middle of the lake. Later realized that top piece of rod wasn't completely lined up with guide on bottom piece of rod, so made a small twist to get it lined up better. Few casts later, whipped a Zoom fluke...felt a tiny bump when casting, no tangle. However reeled in the bait and the line just came right apart, leaving about 20 yards of line and my bait in the water. Needless so say, I'll never be touching Nanofil again. Anyone have any ideas as to why this may be happening? As I said, I've looked over the rod and can't find any issues. Can't be an issue with my casting, or at least I don't think? This is a medium power rod, and my previous rod was a Shimano MH rod, same length and never had an issue. Stumped and really bummed as I spent $90 on this rod, so really looking for any suggestions I can get as to what might be going on here.
  23. I'm finally going to buy a St. Croix spinning rod, and was just curious to see if it's worth spending an extra $80 to go up from the Mojo to an Avid? I plan on getting a 7' medium for wacky rigging, and pairing it with the new Shimano Nasci reel. Any input would be great.
  24. This is my first bass using the flipping an pitching technique! Thanks to Glenn on YouTube I've improved my fishing.
  25. So im hoping there may be some guys who like fly fishing. I was given two fly rods and dont know anything about them. From the lil research i did it looks like i may have gotten some good gear. So here it is. Orvis battenkill disc reels 1 3/4 and 1 7/8 both made in england 1 g loomis gl3 fr1087 rod 9' 7# line 1 st. Croix legend series im-s graphite Any info would be appreciated. if there worth what i think im going to try to trade maybe later on for baitcaster/spinning rod & reels. But not too positive yet
