  1. What’s your guys favorite squarebills I’ve recently been fishing them a ton as my dock is covered in shallow chunk rock at the mouth of a channel and I love throwing them in the afternoon as the shad move up shallow. I’ve recently found the bx brat to be phenomenal the Kvd 1.5s are ok but I like throwing the dt fat dt 4-6s and the bx brat the best I guess Rapala s are just productive for me. those brats are no joke. What squarebills to do you guys like I’ve heard good things about the little Jhon and crush cranks. Anyone used them ?
  2. So my Dad and i headed out on a lake in my area that is mainly grass and some rock cover as the main structure. We caught one fish flipping the deepest egde of an emergent grassline in about 5 ft of water (Surface temp 50.7) I fished that way for several hours before switching up to throwing a squarebill over the submerged grass, when i would feel the bill get mucked up in the grass I would stop it until i felt it had floated up enough then i would reel back down to the grass, basically rinse and repeat. This provided the biggest fish of the day. (she was just under 5lbs) I didn't quite know if anyone else had ever fished this way. i have always ran spinner baits or lipless over grass like that so this was kind of unorthodox but it worked so i wont complain.
  3. Hey everyone, so my go-to is the Yum Dinger/Yum Finesse Worm (Wacky, Neko, Carolina in Green Pumpkin, Watermelon Red Flake, June Bug). This spring I want to start expanding more and using Arkie Jigs. Does anyone have any recommendation on their favorite brand and color, trailer (craws/grubs/paddletails) combinations for the different seasons? Which works best for you? Also, how do you normally retrieve such jigs with the specific combinations? Again, I am just looking to expand and perfect my arsenal one at a time. Any help would be amazing I also use Crankbaits (Berkely Pitbull 5.5 Squarebill), Buzz Baits (Booyah 3/8 top water) and Swimbaits (Powerbait 4" Rib Shads ) but for some reason or another unsuccessful using them. I will save that for another thread lol.
  4. I'm interested in getting a dedicated rod for SquareBill CrankBaits 3-5 foot divers. I've been using either a 6'6 Abu Veritas MH/Mod-Fast for SpinnerBaits and SquareBills and I've also used the 6'6 Berkeley Shock M/Mod-Fast. The Veritas Mod-Fast is very capable , maybe too much power; and the budget Shock Rod felt about right but broke yesterday about 7 inches from the top on a 1lb bass I tried to flip over the side. I'm wondering what some of you think about the 7ft Veritas Winch MH for Squarebills ? Anyone fished Squarebills with this exact stick ? Will it have enough steering power ? Or should I stick with the Veritas MH-ModFast for this presentation ?
  5. I have had success using squarebills for largemouth. I've never really used them for smallies. Most the smallmouth waters I fish are fairly deep, clear water. Crankbaits need to mostly be bounced off the bottom, usually rock. I'm wondering who has had success with them for smallmouth and how exactly you use them. And of course, what are your preferred brands and colors. For largemouth, I like Strike King KVD 1.5's a lot. Mostly natural Shad and bluegill colors.
  6. Hey there, need some advice on size and color of some squarebills. I have a coupon for Basspro and am going to be buying some KVD squarebills that are on sale. I have no idea what size or color to get. I'm fishing from the bank and will be fishing lakes and small ponds. Also do I get silent types as well as rattles or stay with one or the other? Thanks
  7. So I'm a little confused. When would you use a squarebill over a lipless crankbait? I've never fished either but ordered both kinds today.

LiveTarget Baitball Series Threadfin Squarebill. Top 3 favorite hard lures for chasing Largemouths.
  9. I just bought this lure and was wondering the brand name/model. Any ideas? It is a Wakebait or very shallow diving crankbait. Very good paint job/ possibly hand painted. Yellow belly dark burnt orange body with white splotches on the sides. The bill has a weird lip on the bottom. It has a dorsal fin. Never seen anything like this lure.
  10. I'm looking into getting a new setup for chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, and other open hook moving baits. So far I've narrowed it down to two rods and thee reels. The rods are the Daiwa Tatula XT cranking rods in a 7' MH reg. glass rod, and a Denali Jadewood J2 7' MH mod. I don't know much about glass rods, any tips or advice? The reels are the Lews Speed Spool LFS, the Lews Mach I Speed Spool, and the Shimano Casitas 150. I notice the Mach I weighs half an ounce more, yet has a deeper spool, whereas the Casitas has less line capacity than both reels. Any thoughts on what to get or anything about the equipment? Thank you.
  11. Let me start this off by letting everyone know that I fish from the bank 90% of the time so I like to pack light for fishing trips. I also just started using baitcasting gear recently so I'm building my arsenal up. Anyways, I'm picking out a new rod and reel for myself for Christmas from my wife and I need some advice. I'm looking for a rod that will be good for reaction baits. I'd say 50% of my reaction bait fishing is lipless cranks, 25% squarebills, 20% spinnerbaits, and 5% chatterbait. What power and action would you guys recommend to cover all of these bases?
  12. I posted about cranking with braid a while back, and have taken the advice of a couple members and deleted my flouro leader and am now using straight braid. The water I fish certainly isn't clear, and it obviously hasn't had an affect bc I'm still catching fish. But now I've started throwing squarebill cranks a lot more, and I love them. Easier to throw along the bank in the shallower water, and I don't get snagged and lose lures as much (big plus bc crankbaits ain't cheap). I know that line diameter dictates diving depth, but I also know that the manufacturers given depths aren't based on using braided line. This question goes out to you other fellas cranking on braid... What is your go-to braid diameter when it comes to cranking squarebills?
  13. I am planning to invest in a combo for small sqaurebill crankbaits and would like to hear suggestions on what people have used, what they liked, what they didn't like, etc. I would like to get a quality combo, so I am aware that I will likely spend some money on this, so I will say cap the budget at $350. I am interested in keeping the combo as light as possible, and would prefer a 5.3:1 reel. Thanks in advance!
  14. Hey everyone, I wanted to ask how many people use these squarebills? I used one today for the first time and thought it was pretty interesting. Meaning, it is a % bigger than the KVD 1.5, (as to be expected) but the action was not what I thought, in a good way. A lot more wobble in the head and tail of the lure on retrieve. I did not catch anything on it, but no trouble casting it a ways out there as to be expected. Any other thoughts, or success stories with these? Wdy
  15. I don't have any experience with squarebill crankbaits in particular so I'm looking to stock up on them. 5-7$ is my target price range but it consider slightly more expensive options. I'd also appreciate responses to these questions: When should I throw this type of lure instead of other options? (ex. swim jig, non squarebill crank) Plastic or Balsa? What makes this lure effective compared to non-squarebill cranks? I fish from the bank in mostly stained to clear waters no deeper than 15ft.
  16. i have a medium action moderate tip st croix premier cranking rod . is 10 lb test around the correct line i should be using ?keep in mind i am fishing clear water in northeast US what is you cranking set up? let me know please!!
  17. I got two Xcalibur square billed craw crankbaits at dick's yesterday, 3$ each. I got the XCS100 in a firetigerish pattern and an XCS200 in a moss black craw pattern. my question on another note is does anyone have these or any other Xcalibur brand baits and do you know if it's a good company? from the looks of these lures and the original price i'd say they seem promising.
  18. Picked up two H20 brand squarebills and two lipless cranks today. H20 seems to be a proprietary Academy brand of lure. I have never really fished squarebills or lipless cranks much before but am going to give them a shot. Many people say they do well in the cold too.
  19. Yet again, it'll give new users as well as some of the old vets a way to learn and 'teach' through their opinions The second installment will be on CRANKBAITS and your thoughts. Questions to Consider: What is your favorite crankbait? (who makes it, price, where you bought, color?) Under what circumstances will you throw any type of crankbait? How do you determine what color crankbait to use? What factors tie in for you? How do you set the hook when you know you've got a fish on? Are there any crankbaits that you've tried that you do NOT suggest? What techniques do you use for your selected crank? Name a good squarebill and in what situations to throw it! NOTE: QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER ARE QUESTIONS YOU CAN USE IN YOUR ANSWER TO SHED LIGHT AND MORE DETAIL TO YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS FOR THOSE WHO AREN'T VERY "KNOWLEDGEABLE" ON THE SPECIFIC TOPIC. NOTE: After all the topics are covered, I'll take a vote and see if any of the same lures were mentioned more than once and we'll get a community consensus. Could be interesting to see!
