  1. Trying to to stretch line and get the most use out of it these days. Can I get away with keeping my older 6lb test flouro as a base for my spinning reel and tying on a slightly heavier 7lb test flouro on as my working line? I cut down the older 6lb line to make up about 15% of my total as my base. Then filled the top 85% with the new 7lb test flouro line. I’ve got it tied on to a solid leader knot which is buried deep in the spool. I know that it’s not usually, or maybe ever practical to tie on a leader that’s heavier than the line behind it, but in this case the base line will never get close to touching air, or even seeing sunlight. With that being said, I still want to present the issue to everyone here because I don’t want to end up wasting more line by doing this… if it ends up causing me issues with casting distance? or my line to just break? Would it be safer for me to go ahead and take this base/leader line off and string only the 7lb on it? Of course I should of asked this question before I even spooled it…better now than never I guess 🙂. Thanks everyone!
  2. Having issues with my Fuego 2500 line lay. The line is stacks up high. Now, I have the extra spacers that come with it but am having trouble getting the spool bearing off. It doesn’t seem to just slide up like the older models. Anyone have any experience with these newer LT’s? Someone enlighten me..
  3. Novice spare parts question here. Couldn't find an exact answer to this by searching, appreciate any guidance. I am looking to buy a spare spool for my Bantam MGL151XG, exact model link below with parts list: https://fishshop.shimano.com/collections/bantmgl151xg If I buy the "Spool Assembly" part # BNT5805, can anyone confirm this will include all sub-components so I can just swap out with the current spool as needed to change lines? The term assembly is suggestive that this would be the case but would like some reassurance before dropping the $. I am looking for the simplest solution to swap braid and copoly on the water, but I don't want to get into moving bearings between spools or anything beyond removing side plate for a quick swap. Obviously not the most technical reel guy. Appreciate any responses!
  4. I clean and fix reels on the side as a second income and I’ve ran into an issue that I just can’t figure out. It’s a Johnny Morris Carbon Black reel. Whenever I tighten the drag down the reel gets stuck at the bottom when reeling. The spool is straight, no problems, I even tried other spools. If I take the spool out it reels nice and smooth. If I put the spool back in and loosen the drag it reels totally fine. It’s only when the drag is down that I have the issue. I put new spool bearings and brand new drag washers. Still, same issue. Can someone please help? I’ve googled it and I’m not finding any answers at all. Thanks guys!!
  5. I am looking to add another rod to my line up. I would like to get a set up for lighter baits, like weightless light. I could also use it for fishing finesse jigs and what have you since I live in Minnesota. Although I'm looking for more input on the reel side, I should probably say that I am planning to get something like a 6'10" to 7'0" medium fast action rod. Possibly the newer Ducket Triad since I really like my Micro Magic. So as I mentioned before I need a lightweight reel that can cast light weight baits well. I have recently fallen in love with Daiwa, I bought a Tatula CT and a CT Type-R. So far I have narrowed my search to the new Tatula SV TWS because of the SV spool, and the solid platform. I also have really caught the itch for the Daiwa T3. I know it's not a new reel, but it can be found new on Ebay fairly easily. I would like to hear any and all of you guy's thoughts on all of the models like the T3 Ballistic, MX, 1016 and so on. Unfortunately the T3 SV looks to be much more expensive. Like I said, I would love to hear your thoughts on my narrowed choices, as well as some other recommendations if you have any. Thanks!
  6. Today I caught my first striper ever. It wasn't a huge fish, only about 2-3 lbs. But while unhooking him hooked my index finger with a treble hook (for the first time as well) from the lure past the barb. Pulled it out, and caught two more stripers. It was a good day.
  7. Hello! So I have an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5500 c3 2 speed that I have had since I was younger. When I was younger I did take it apart a few times, so I may have lost a piece or two, but in general the reel works. Except! There are 3 problems with the reel that I would like fixed but I can't figure out what is wrong. I have taken it apart a few times and assembled to spec but it still doesn't perform ideally. First, the over-spin problem. If I spin the handle quickly while the reel is engaged, the spool will spin like normal. But if I suddenly stop cranking the handle, then the reel will continue to spin for half a second and make a clicking noise, as if the spool is spinning over the "clutch" that engages/disengages when you turn the handle/push the button. Second, the dog-tooth gear works fine, but the play in the handle is still a little more significant than I would like. Is there anything I can do about that? And lastly, the 2 speed shifting doesn't appear to be working anymore. Is there a more detailed explanation on how it works somewhere online? I would love to learn how the mechanics of it work coming from someone who knows more than me about it! Any response will help, and I'll do what I can to answer any questions that would help lead to the answer! Thank you!
  8. I'm not going to lie, I'm an Abu Garcia guy. It's the parts availabilty, for the most part, and interchangeability between models that make me stick to Abu. I know that every brand has their minor differences one model up or down, but this time Shimano's finally caught my eye with the new Aldebaran. Now every brand has their own defining terms for mechanisms within a reel, but if someone here can elighten me on this 'Silent Tune'. I read that it's suppose to greatly reduce or completely eliminate tolerances of the spool bearings when casting via small springs installed behind each spool bearing (seen on google image search). The Ambassadeur 1/2500c has a similar mechanism in which the long end of the spool shaft has a spring installed and the other end is independant from the pinion gear shaft (like the new revo3s except the S) which rides on a spring loaded nylon bushing; essentially it's like the silent tune, but the Ambassadeur seems to involve the spool itself rather than minimizing the tolerances/vibrations of the spool bearings of the silent tune. Similarly, the centrifugal brake arms, as also seen in other models like the curado and chronarch, is the equivalent of Abu's IVCB-IV system; only real difference is the locking arms and brake racing adjustments. Are there any members out there as enthusiastic about reel mechanisms like me (I'd rather be catching bass, but when it's cold, this is where my mind wanders off to)? Please let me know any comparison in castability between the IVCB-IV or VI system, the 1/2500c (stock), and the 2015 Aldebaran. I'd especially like to know the difference between the mgxtreme, mgx, and Aldebaran. Tight Lines, Fishangdood ... I'd go off onto mag braking systems, but that's just another can to open.
  9. Hi Guys! I just recently saved up the money to buy a decent combo (200ish) and I was wondering a few things. Revo SX vs. Lew's Speed Spool - Both 6:4:1 After picking the reel would you rather have a Mojo Bass 7ft MH or a Veritas 7ft MH, or your choice around 100 Is Lew's Discountiuing the Speed Spool because of new product in its place? If you have any of these combos for sale send me a PM! Thanks Guys! Brennan New to the site and sorry if I went against any of the community culture on anything
  10. Hello All this is my first post. Thank you all this forum has been a great help in my bass fishing. Im new to baitcasting and last night I decided to clean my Abu orra sx. Spool side only nothing on the handle or gears. I wiped the entire spool side down with rubbing alcohol including the level wind and gear beneath it. Along with the gear on the handle side and the brakes. Now the spool will barely spin even with all the breaks off and the spool tension knob super lose I cleaned that as well. Any suggestions on how to remedy the situation would be greatly appreciated.
