  1. In past threads, so many folks have said that a purple worm is they're favourite color. It's been my best color for as long as I remember. Most of the soft plastic makers offer they're version of purple. They vary slightly by manufacture. My two favourites are the Roboworm in Folkstead Special, and the original Creme Scoundrel. What company do you think makes the best purple?
  2. With soft plastic worms, craws, etc, what's your best producing retrieve? Mine has always been a slow lift/drop retrieve, with occasional pauses. I don't seem to do nearly as well while dragging a soft plastic bait. What's everyone say? What retrieve has worked best for you?
  3. bass are getting ready to bed and in some places already on beds! What are you throwing at them? Or what do you plan to throw at them? !!!!!
  4. First time posting. I have read several old posts regarding how you all store your soft plastics. I do prefer the binders. But I can’t seem to find the “Browning Jumbo Worm Binders” anywhere. I really want a couple of them. Does anyone know where I could get one or another great high quality, and jumbo size binder? Please don’t make this post about how you store your plastics in totes or boxes. I want and prefer mine in a binder. I just can’t seem to locate the Browning Jumbo or Browning Goliath. Thanks so much!!!
  5. Say I have a bait like a reaction innovations sweet beaver and a bait like the strike king structure bug. Now these baits look fairly similar but one has appendages that basically do nothing (just kind of move up and down) and the other has appendages that kick and twist and do all sorts of wacky movements. Besides water clarity, what would make me choose the sweet beaver instead of the structure bug? I have noticed that there are days when I throw one and it doesn't get a bite and then throw the other and I start getting bit. Haven't been able to understand why this is and how to recognize which one I should initially throw.
  6. Whats your #1 soft plastic for flipping pitching or punching? (name/brand specific please)
  7. Hi, I'm just starting to get into flipping and Pitching... What is the best color for it and what brand/Type of bait? Thanks.
  8. Hey Folks, I am considering restringing my spinning outfits. I run a charter in South Florida, targetting mostly Largemouth in the Everglades, however I do run a lot of Peacock Bass trips. I have traditionally been using Mono around the 10-15lb weight class. I have also experimented with co-polymers (flourocarbon coated mono). The bass get big down here, and i often deal with pretty heavy cover and structure. Also my peacock trips are primarily utelizing live shiners. These monster peacocks and clownknive fish are snapping through the mon and copolymer lines way to quickly for my liking. I am thinking of switching my reels to braid, maybe flouro leaders too. I will break down my primary uses of spinning gear in hopes you all and your vast knowledge can offer some advice on which line or combo of line, would best suit my methods. Topwater plugs, like torpedoes, poppers etc - mono 10-12 lbs because it floats and I like the strretch for those bass that chase, inhale and keep running.... weightless soft plastics, like flukes and stick baits (senko style) -also mono 10-12lb for the stretch again, i think it allows me to give the lures more action with a softer feel (if that makes sense).... Live shiners for peacock and clown knive fish (strong fighters that can reach 15 pounds) -pline copolymer (flourocoated mono) 15lbs - well because i thought it may be stronger and still not visible.... I have 4 outfits tgo restring, any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks folks!
  9. Hi all, I'm new to the site so I'm sorry if this has been brought up before. I did a search and didn't see anything already posted. Anyway, just curious if anybody colors their senkos with sharpie to customize them? Personally I like a black or silver tip on my senkos. The only problem is the sharpie never seems to dry on them. Any ideas I should try? Thanks.
  10. I recently bought a bulk package of fishing lures, and I received a couple of lures that I have not seen before. One of them almost looks like two worms fused together at the middle, forming an "x" shape. I was thinking it's meant to be wacky rigged? The other is a tiny little pink thing that looks like just a little sliver of plastic. Maybe it's for panfish? In trying to upload photos but it won't let me. Any help regarding what they are called, what to use them for, and how to fish them is appreciated.
  11. Hey all, I was wondering if anybody knows of any cool soft baits. I have recently found the Mann's hardnose snake, which looks AWESOME. It would work great in a little swamp near my house. Any other suggestions? Preferably realistic lures, like lizards, frogs, snakes, baitfish, etc.
  12. Hi, I've been fishing lakes and ponds in southwest idaho for 8 years or so. I am very interested in starting a group dedicated to bass fishing in Idaho. I would love to get to know the Bass Resource staff. I have been watching videos on youtube by Glenn May for over a year. It's a pleasure to be on here officially!
  13. Ok im looking into getting one of the mag lews speed sticks. Im looking at the 7'11" heavy rod. I will be using this as my primary flipping and pitching setup for heavier cover. The rod is rated for 1/2 oz to 3oz. I like to flip and pitch soft plastics wtih 1/4 oz weights sometimes and 3/8 oz jigs as well. My question is with the 1/4 oz weight, bulkier soft plastic, and hook do you think I will be over the 1/2 oz mark? what about 3/8 oz jigs with trailer? I know the obvious answer is to weight it but im not going to weigh all the combos that I would ever throw on this. Like is said this will be used for all weights 1/4 oz to punching weights I just wanted to know what you guys thought about this? Also I know there are other larger rods around this length that are rated for 1/4oz to whatever weight but im really liking this rod and am probably going to get it depending on yalls answers. Thanks for the info guys.
  14. What is your method for choosing a color of any given soft plastic?
  15. i know that down south bass have probably already started moving up to spawn or they already started so my question is what is your favorite bait for fishing for spawning bass? for me i don't really have a favorite but i love a 6in lizard usually white, and a big bite baits warmouth, so whats your favorite spawning baits?
  16. I did a custom order and got a big box of the best worms I've ever seen. Hand poured in any color you want or one of the colors on his site. I got the 8" straight tails in fat size and the 8" Lizards. I could not be happier. They float like crazy are loaded with salt and smell like candy, Not rotten garlic etc. I would highly recommend anyone looking for worms think about getting them custom made by Upton's Customs. It works best if you can get some friends together and place an order. I paid a lot of money to have what I wanted made. 50 min per color @ $25. I'll easily go through all of them. I got 6 colors of worms and 5 of the lizards which are $1 a piece.
  17. I mainly fish in the northern states of Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan. I know that the forage is somewhat different than the southern states of Texas, Alabama, etc. A lot of pros on youtube and tv advertise soft plastics that work down in those states, but I'm looking for some soft plastics that will match the forage and work on the waters around me. What do you guys think?
  18. These are some of the best straight-tailed finesse worms I've ever used. Anyone else ever try them? I'm not sure if they're still being made/sold but they're at the top of my soft plastics favorite list. I recommend them highly.
  19. My go-to bait is usually a spinnerbait but tonight I fished with soft plastics only and got "hooked" so to speak on them again. If for no other reason than they are tanks -- you can throw them anywhere without (much) worry. That and the sensitivity they afford are really great. I think I get more bites from them too...or at least can feel the bites I do get more. And, of course, they are way cheaper than the hard baits.
  20. I've decided that, that for three days I will disclose three new rigs I've discovered (two of which I've developed myself.) Day Two's new rig is the shaky wacky combo. It is a great twist whether fished as a finesse shaky head presentation, like a wacky rig, or with a walk the dog retrieve. One note, though, if fished like a wacky rig, it can be fished faster. Todays tips: Never throw away a torn up plastic. If ripped up from hooks, take a chunk of plastic, like those strips of material that bind appendages on a bait, stuff them into the crevice and expose to a flame. Most external damage can be fixed by stretching/bending the "wounded" area and exposing to a flame in short bursts. A good goal to aim for is to, for baits such as worms with ridges on the body, you repair the lure without liquefying said ridges. As for ones beyond repair, cut them up how you like, and via a lighter/stove top, combine them with other baits. Some good examples: I will take torn up senkos, slice them lengthwise (after repairing it) and take the tails from torn up rage tail anacondas, and melt the tail along the senko. This creates a leech type bait that is great for drop shoting in current. Finesse worms are the easiest to repair. The tail is where the action is, so if the head is ripped, melt on another head. BE CREATIVE, after all you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Tune in tomorrow for day 3.
  21. Hello All, I will be fishing smaller lake this weekend in WI where we had succuess this summer with soft plastics on sunny hot days sometimes right in the middle of the day... My question now is, will the soft plastic techniques continue to work as it will be 61 degrees, slight over cast, september and somewhat cold? We will be fishing alot of texas rigged berkley power worms pit bosses, senkos(possibly wacky rigged) and thanks to you guys I will be giving Shakey Head Finesse fishing a first go around. I am beginnder on soft plastics so not sure when they work the best or continute to work. Or should we go to shallow running squarebill cranks...lipless cranks, rat-l-traps and Red Eye Shads, Rapalas? Thanks for the advice!
  22. Hey i recently started flipping and pitching with both spinning and casting gear. I usually use my casting equipment for heavier cover. I'm only 16 and my parents aren't millionaires so im not using the best of gear, but for my casting gear i use a Abu Garcia Silver Max on a 7'0" MH fast action Abu Garcia Vendetta rod. Like i said... not the best but for a very small budget, i do like the setup. My spinning gear consists of a Okuma reel, not sure what model, and a 7'0" MH fast action rod i bought a long time ago at a run down bait shop. Its actually a GREAT rod for flipping though. I'm looking to buy a Quantum PT accurist, and im not sure what rod. I also want to talk about what im throwing too. When im pitching heavy cover, I like to use heavier tungsten weights, up to 1 oz. when punching extreme cover. I usually pitch larger soft plastics, and creature baits texas rigged, although i occasionally use jigs. With spinning gear i like to texas rig with anything from 1/32 oz. to 3/8 oz. i mostly use curl tail worms and some creature baits, not a big fan of beavers though. My three favorite creature baits are 1. Gene Larue Biffle Bug 2. Zoom Brush Hog 3. Strike King Rage Tail Craw , some worms l often use are 1. 4" or 6" Original Culprit Worm 2. Trigger X Swimming Worm 3. Zoom G-Tail Worm. I fish PA and sometimes OH, the lakes here are really pressured, so i like to use small(er) plastics, lighter line, or new stuff, like creature baits. I've recently started spooling both my flipping and pitching reels with Berkley Trilene 8lb. XT clear/blue, which only comes in pony spools unfortunately, because i like it alot, its a smaller diameter, and its AMAZINGLY strong, i like clear/blue to help with line visibility. Well after sharing my gear i hope this forum can grow in popularity, and more people will share what they use and make recommendations for a 16 year old trying to maybe go pro someday, i haven't fished any tourneys yet but may fish one this year, and i hope to get into a club next year. Thank you for your time if you've read this long intro, and i ask that you spread the word and hopefully I can get some tips, and suggestions. Thanks agian! Derek Garner Please feel free to post ANY tips, suggestions, new products, etc. about flipping and pitching
  23. Okay so first off I would like to say that I am still relatively inexperienced in the great sport of angling. Last year I began learning to drag tube baits when I found a bunch of them in my uncles tacklebox. I was intrigued and decided to rig them the way they are normally rigged on a tube jig head by sticking them through and popping the eye out. I had quite a bit of luck this way and even landed a solid 4pnd 12oz smallmouth! my pb smallmouth. When I did research online I realized I however seem to be the only one who has fished these baits on a BALL HEAD JIG like this:http://www.junebugtackle.com/jig-head-cannon-ball.php as opposed to a TUBE bait jig head like this:http://www.sportsmanswarehouse.com/sportsmans/Troutsmen-Jig-Head-Tube-Head/productDetail/Jig-Heads/prod9999008466/cat101088 , my question is, is the ball head jig hindering the action of the bait and would I have better luck with a tube jig head? THANK YOU!
  24. I admit, I woefully underuse soft plastics, most likely due to my having taught myself to fish at a young age. I needed a fast, more interesting way to fish. (I was ten and got bored easily.) Now however, I would like to better utilize them. When do you use soft jerkbaits vs paddletails vs soft craws vs worms vs tubes. Which ones are used for used for what situation as opposed to others. I fish most w/ a t-rig. Which do you rig in what ways for what circumstances? Mostly I use jerkbaits in more open spaces, above and around the edges of weedbeds/stumps. I use soft craws to drag/yo yo along the bottom. I use tubes in heavier cover, and worms for smaller spaces where short casts are necessary (I fish from the bank) i.e. through lily pads, heavy cover, and bluffs/steep areas where vertical presentations are used. I tend to use paddletails as an alternative to jerkbaits, especially in muddier water. I have no experience w/ grubs, or really any soft plastics outside of these listed. Also, which are better search baits and which are fished slow (oviously the got worm there) and how? Rereading this I feel like I total novice. So, I guess this is soft plastic 101.Thanks in advance.
  25. Been having trouble lately trying to find that "right craw" for me and was just wondering what are some of your favorite craw baits and what you would reccomend. Thanks.
