  1. I made a post last year for rod recommendations, and ended up getting a 6’6” ML/F St. Croix Premier. After fishing it for a year, I’ve got to say it’s a hair too long for most of the places I fish (narrow, small creeks where the average fish is 10-to-15 inches). The biggest cons is the rod is slightly clumsy to be waist deep in water surrounded in tree limbs and handling a fish, handle length is a bit too long, and up to this point I’ve never wished I could cast any further so I’m set on a shorter rod fitting the bill better. The action and power are great, though. So I’m pretty set on ML. I’m on the hunt for the perfect setup for this type of fishing, particularly been looking into the Avid line with their 6’ ML/F and 6’3 ML/XF spinning rods. I don’t have the ability to handle either in person but if anyone has, just how different is a St. Croix XF compared to the F? Is there a noticeable difference between a 6’ and 6’3 rod? I’ve not fished a 6’3 at all, and it’s been a while since I’ve used a 6’. The handle length is the same on both which seems like it’d be perfect. I would say 80% of my uses for it are going to be these small creeks so I don’t think I’ll miss my 6’6” too much. Line is going to be 10lb braid but debating on going back to 6-8lb mono. I’m liking the braid/mono leader so far though. 70% of the time I’ll be using 11/15oz Ned Rigs, 4” senkos, 1/16-1/8oz T rigs. The other 30% Rebel Wee-Craws, Rapalas, whopper plopper 60s.
  2. I'm going to be stopping in Hood River Oregon on my way to Astoria for 2 days of bass fishing the Columbia River. I will be pulling into Hood River on May 26th, 2014 to May 28th 2014. I was wondering if anyone would like to share some info on the bassin of this strech of river. All my fishing is catch and release. Also if there are any clubs or groups having any tournaments between the 26th of May to 8th of June I would like to fish in one of them. Thank you for your time....
  3. What do y'all think the best bed fishing bait for smallmouth is. This is my first time bed fishing for smallies. I plan on using a 6'10" medium light spinning rod with a Daiwa BG 2500 spinning reel. ( I fish Northern Wisconsin).
  4. Hey all! I’m brand new to this forum and relatively new to smallmouth bass fishing (recovering trout bum here). Looking forward to learning more about what is quickly becoming my new favorite fish though! We live in Missoula and my in-laws live outside Ronan (south of Flathead Lake). I’ve done OK on smallies fishing the lower Flathead in the summer a few times in the past, but have never fished for them in Flathead Lake (I know they’re there!). Just wondering if anyone has been getting into any smallmouth around here yet this spring? What techniques would you be using in early spring/pre-spawn? And any other tips or thoughts on where I should be focusing my efforts once it warms back up a bit (it’s snowing here today ?) would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks so much. Looking forward to learning from this group and I hope you all are staying healthy and sane during these crazy times. Cheers!
  5. This is my 1st post and also1st bass over a couple of ounces. I'm sure it's a smallmouth??, caught from a small creek in Northern Delaware on a small rapala lure, air temp was low 50's. How big do you guys guess it was. Didn't measure or weigh it. Thanks in advance.
  6. What's up guys! I am planning a trip up north with 3 buddies to do some smallmouth and largemouth bass fishing. We wanted to rent a lake house and dock our boat on the lake so we can easily fish each day. We are not familiar with the area and was wondering if anyone knew of any great lakes to rent a house and fish on for bass in the spring? Any and all help is appreciated! There are so many d**n lakes to choose from! We currently have Big St. Germain lake booked but research suggests that it will be difficult to fish without a guide and its mostly a muskie and northern lake.
  7. I'm going to be in Astoria Oregon from May 28th, 2014 to June 4th 2014 and I plan on looking for some smallmouth bass on the Columbia River. I have been looking at a map of the Columbia River from Tongue Point (Cathlamet Bay up river to the Wallace Slough) also including a strech of river on the Washington side near Cathlamet. If anyone has any experance catching some bronze backs on this section of River would be great. All my fishing is catch and release. If you know of any close by areas outside of were I have stated I'm going to be fishing I would love to hear about them. Thank You for your Time......
  8. Has anyone fished in Oregon off the river of John Day? What has been your experiences fishing in this river? What types of baits have worked really well and baits not so much, maybe depending on season, weather, temp of water or just fish being finicky? From YouTube I'm hearing that using tube jigs work REALLY well, what have you you noticed using this bait? Want to hear from you anything that can help inexperienced bass Fishing.
  9. Hello everyone, I am new member here from an Island called Mauritius. I love fishing a lot. I haven't catch anything big yet but I keep on trying. I need to upgrade my fishing gears but currently cannot afford if anyone has any tips on how to catch bigger bass please let me know. If anyone has old gears that they are not using, I would really appreciate it. This fishing is so addicting...I keep thinking of it 24/7 I even have dreams about it.
  10. Where should I find smallies early when water is under 50 degrees on a deep natural lake?
  11. The wife was busy and let me have a day to myself. After sleeping in I headed out to the Mississippi River just to try it. The water is raging right now about 4 ft higher than normal and going about 7 mph. All the cold nights lately have dropped water temps to 52 degrees. I tried a jig first thinking they'd want something slow and subtle. Didn't work. Then decided to throw the new Strike King Magnum 4.0 Squarebill. Its big for the bass we have up here, but ever since I started using it I've had more bites than the 1.5 or the 2.5. Its weird that they wanted such a big bait. Even in Fall when temps keep dropping. I only got 2 landed but lost 2. Nothing over 2.5 pounds. But at least I caught something. With the temps warming around here might need to get out again before the water gets into the 40's.
  12. ...and it's a Bass Resource article: https://www.bassresource.com/fishing/streamers-bass.html?utm_source=SEPnews&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=9417 Works on Largemouth too... That's an 8" fly...hard to see in the pic, but it is...
  13. Has anyone stopped to fish the tye river? Made a trip out to where it crosses the 29 and found some of the greatest smallmouth holes in Va. caught 60 in 2 hours with 6 fish larger than 16 inches. Just wanted to see if this river is worth investigating a little more or simply a lucky hole or day.
  14. What are the go to lures for smallmouth bass in small rivers and streams
  15. I am going to be going to cabelas what lures should I get for both smallmouth and largemouth bass.
  16. Has anyone taken advantage of the early ice here in Maine to catch some bass through the hardwater? Where at?
  17. I'm looking to start tournament fishing, and haven't found any leads on tournaments in this region. I'm willing to travel to bordering states for tournaments as well. If anyone has any information or leads on tournaments in the Western PA region please let me know, it would be much appreciated!
  18. I am having difficulties fishing an area where i know there are big smallmouth i have caught a couple but it is tough. I am fishing shallow water i can wade in but i have found a drop off that drops around 10-12 feet like in this picture but at the bottom is either a brush pile, a tree or something that i keep getting hung up in i have tried things like senkos and other weedless options but the water is moving to fast for it to sink and texas rigs the weight in getting hung up. Any help would be nice! Thanks
  19. So recently I have been looking for a nice baitcaster reel. It so happens that while cleaning g out my garage I found a Abu Garcia, Black Max 1. It says on the side that it has 2 ball bearings and an intstant anti-reverse mechanism. To me it just looks like a basic baitcaster reel, no special round bail or anything. After looking in the internet, I have not been able to find the product at all. All that comes up is the Black Max 2. Has anybody heard of this reel before and does it sound like a good product?
  20. Ok so I fish in a little pond in my neighborhood and all I can catch there are Bluegill and Largemouth Bass. However I keep hearing that there are Smallmouth Bass in there but I have caught lots of bass there and they're all Largemouth. So I was wondering where they could be hiding and what lure they take. I commonly use bucktail jigs and poppers there and I'd imagine I'd catch some smallmouth by now. The most common theory to me is that since there is a smaller lake in my community as well as the one I fish in that they are stocked down there and largemouth are in the one I fish in. So my question is where are the Smallmouth and how do I catch them?
  21. I live in Eau Claire, WI and im trying to find some fishing spots I don't have a boat or canoe. I have waders but I don't know any creeks or shallow bass spots to use them at. I use a lot of top water frogs so any place with lily pads or a lot of grass or weeds in the water. I have already tried half moon lake, elk creek lake, eau Claire dam, and Altoona dam. remember I don't have a boat or canoe but I don't mind walking threw the woods or in the water to get to a fishing spot I just don't noe to many spots around Eau Claire, WI if anyone could give me a lake, pond, river, or a creek with small or largemouth bass near Eau Claire, Wi I don't mind driving 30 to 40 mins to get to any fishing spot. 22. I am about two years into my epiphany that fishing is just an awesome pastime. My mentor/ friend has invited me to a week on Drummond Island, Michigan and I am super excited to get a chance to fish Lake Huron and do some northern smallmouth bass fishing. Any tips/ advice fro a newbie? I need input on setups, presentations and July fishing in general on Lake Huron. Thanks in advance!
  23. Hey fellow fisherman, Some friends and I fished Belle Isle on the Historic James River in Richmond, Va this last Tuesday. We caught a ton of sunfish throwing grubs, and a few channel cats on some fresh cut bait. We got a few smallies on some crawfish shaped crankbaits, nothing too big. We were limited to the shore, no wading, because we were on a school trip. The area we fished was a beach type area that you reach by turning left off the footbridge if you are walking in from the city. Even without wading, the trip was fairly enjoyable, and we are planning to head back Thursday afternoon. So now, my question is, do any of you guys know of any particularly good spots in the Belle Isle area, for catfish, bass, or anything else? And, have you found any specific lures or baits to work well there other than the standard stuff you would throw at Pony Pasture or Huguenot Flat-water? Thanks in advance! (:
  24. I caught my biggest smallmouth bass to date weighing in at 4.6 pounds and 22 inches long. It was like a football. It was caught on a 4 inch bright red senko in a Chicago harbor. Tons of huge smamouth this year. Get them while they are big and still in prespawn!!!
