  1. Hey Yall! Been diving in deep into Ultralight fishing lately and have been having a blast with stud gills and the occasional 2lb - 3lb largemouth. Something about that light tackle is suuuuper fun especially with the bigger fish. Its got me super curious in targetting smallmouth since they are such hard fighters! They remind me of a cross between bluegill and largies. Where are some of the best places to target smallies around Sacramento and the greater area? I have a pedal drive kayak as well. Thanks in advance!
  2. what's up guys, basically I am conflicted between a 1000 and 2500 size reel... maybe even 2000 size but feel like might as well get the 2500 at that point. Anyway I don't fish spinning setups a ton but I'm wanting to get into it so I can take it to the creeks so for sure some smaller sun fish some rock bass and the occasional 2-3lb max smallmouth will be targeted as well. I just don't want having the 1000 to screw me out of a decent bass when it comes. going to put it on a 6'6 rod medium fast. wanting to use braid. thanks for anyone that has any advice.
  3. I made a post last year for rod recommendations, and ended up getting a 6’6” ML/F St. Croix Premier. After fishing it for a year, I’ve got to say it’s a hair too long for most of the places I fish (narrow, small creeks where the average fish is 10-to-15 inches). The biggest cons is the rod is slightly clumsy to be waist deep in water surrounded in tree limbs and handling a fish, handle length is a bit too long, and up to this point I’ve never wished I could cast any further so I’m set on a shorter rod fitting the bill better. The action and power are great, though. So I’m pretty set on ML. I’m on the hunt for the perfect setup for this type of fishing, particularly been looking into the Avid line with their 6’ ML/F and 6’3 ML/XF spinning rods. I don’t have the ability to handle either in person but if anyone has, just how different is a St. Croix XF compared to the F? Is there a noticeable difference between a 6’ and 6’3 rod? I’ve not fished a 6’3 at all, and it’s been a while since I’ve used a 6’. The handle length is the same on both which seems like it’d be perfect. I would say 80% of my uses for it are going to be these small creeks so I don’t think I’ll miss my 6’6” too much. Line is going to be 10lb braid but debating on going back to 6-8lb mono. I’m liking the braid/mono leader so far though. 70% of the time I’ll be using 11/15oz Ned Rigs, 4” senkos, 1/16-1/8oz T rigs. The other 30% Rebel Wee-Craws, Rapalas, whopper plopper 60s.
  4. Hello, I am going to Lake Powell for spring break and was interested in catching largemouth, smallmouth, striper, and northern pike as well as catfish. I was wondering if any angler who has had success at Powell have any lure and technique tips on how to catch any of these species? Thanks.
  5. First time quarry fishing and got my butt kicked today. Windy, cloudy, deep, clear (5-10’ vis), mostly rocky shoreline some moderate submerged grass/other vegetation near shore dropping off quickly into unknown depths. Spent some time fishing a deps slide swimmer and got some very nice smallies to show themselves (shore fishing only), got some follows, several at a time more than once, almost right to my feet, no takers though. Frustration ensued then I tossed around some jerks, a mojo rigged centipede , ned, spinner baits etc. nothing, nada, not a sniff or follow, only interest was in the glide bait. Can drop shot be effective fishing steep banks from shore? Finesse and smallie fishing in general is not my strong suit, going back tomorrow what would you do?
  6. Heading to Western MD this weekend with the family and should have a couple hours to get some lines wet in the Yough for the first time this year. Weather doesn't look like it's going to be ideal but that's life. I'd likely be fishing near Friendsville, just wading through the river. Any tips for what the fish are doing/biting right now? A few techniques I was considering are a tube, wacky rig, swimbait, and jerkbait. Maybe t-rig a lizard or brush hog or throw the whopper plopper around. Anything you'd remove or prepare for instead? Thanks in advance!
  7. What do y'all think the best bed fishing bait for smallmouth is. This is my first time bed fishing for smallies. I plan on using a 6'10" medium light spinning rod with a Daiwa BG 2500 spinning reel. ( I fish Northern Wisconsin).
