  1. I’m going to college in Florida, which should give me ample opportunities to look beyond freshwater and start catching some of the fish that live in the Gulf. However, I don’t have a dedicated saltwater setup and don’t really know where to start. I imagine that I’d spend most of my time targeting snook, baby tarpon, speckled trout, and redfish. When I come back to Maryland for Christmas and Easter, I’d probably use the same setup to target rockfish, too. Not sure if that’s realistic for a single setup, but I just need to get a foot into the saltwater door. What setup (rod/reel) would you recommend for <$200? I’m more interested in slinging lures than soaking bait, if that helps. Also, what line (type and test) should I use?
  2. im looking for a good casting reel that a can use for inshore salt water. i was looking at the tranx 200and the curado k. if anyone has any suggestions they would be very much appreciated. also does anyone know if the tatula 200 or tatula elite are saltwater capable
  3. I was wondering what pound main line and what type of leader mono or flouro and pound for inshore striped bass fishing in New England
  4. I am new to salt water fishing, and recently bought a Battle II 3000 and Daiwa BG 4500 to do some fishing in inlets and salt water rivers, as well as try out some surf casting. I do realize some bigger reels would've been better for big fish surf casting. I am fishing Cape Cod in the Bass River area. I am wondering two things. I have seen and read a lot about backing your reels with Mono and mainlining braid and then using a leader. I am wondering what lb test for each of the 3000 and 4500. For each reel, What is the ideal lb test to back mono, mainline braid (lb test), and then leader lb test. What lengths of backing, mainline, leader should I be using for each. Should I use the guide lines on the reel for each? I have seen very varied responses on other posts, which I am assuming is mostly preference. Second thing I am wondering, is what are some of the better lures to use for this type of fishing, and live bait setups. What weights should be used, rigs, etc. Any advice would be great. Thanks! Ric
  5. Hey BR, I'm trying to get into stripper fishing (from shore) and I was wondering if I have the right gear. I'm thinking of using a Med/Hvy 7'6 Rod rated for lures up to 3oz, paired with a 5000 size spinning reel with 40lb braid to a 50lb mono leader for bigger jerkbaits, poppers and probably spoons. I'm also going to use a 7'6 Med/Hvy Rod rated for lures up to 1oz, paired with a 4000 size reel with 20lb braid to 30lb mono for jerkbaits. Would these combos work for what I am going to be using them for? Is a braid to leader know or swivel better? Any tips for fishing from a jetty? Any lure recommendations? Any help is greatly appreciated, Martin Sierra
  6. What is the best rod out there to get started with surf casting in the Boston and Cape Cod Area? I would like to spend under $200 on the rod, want something that is light weight and can cast far. My guess is I'll be using 3/4oz to 2oz lures. Two piece rod would be ideal Thanks!
  7. Here is my problem, I do local/club bass tournaments. I started doing this about three years ago. I do not want to quit. I love the competition, it pushes me to do better; However, I have always had a fondness for intracoastal fishing, and want to get back into it. I want a boat that can do it all. Rather than have multiple boats, or spending too much on one boat. The intracoastal bass boats from Skeeter, Ranger, and Triton are more than I can afford new, however I refuse to buy another used boat again! I am looking for something around 30k base price, and at least 18ft (I know that is asking a lot, lol). Anyone have any suggestions on what would be the best way to go? Keep in mind it has to meet tournament regulations for bass fishing. Is there anything out there that fits my needs, or do I just need to pick one and go with it?
  8. Heading to Panama City beach. Can’t fish from pier. Only shore, will bass lures work, and how do I find fish there. Thanks in advance.
  9. Has anyone used their Chronarch MGL in salt or know anyone that has? Any info would be great for determining my purchase. Thanks!
  10. Anybody have any idea what brand this lure is? I had good luck in the surf down in Florida with it last year, and I’m hoping to pick up a few more before I go to the beach this year. Any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks!
  11. Wellllll it's been a long time coming... I finally got a yak. She's not a beauty contest winner but floats and is large enough and has enough features to make me happy. Since I sold my boat and moved to Fort Myers, Florida, I've been dying to get off the shore. So the day is finally here where I can get ON the water... Some tips on where to go is what I'm looking for. I'm so new to this area and also new to Yak fishing so I'm in need of all the help I can get. I don't want your HOT SPOT but I would greatly appreciate tips on where to go for Largies or saltwater as well. I do not like bottom fishing. I prefer to fish on-the-move and not sit still. If I'm in salt water I like to use live shrimp and actively target (structure) cast them. I prefer, however, to go for largies. Thanks for any useful information!
  12. well guys i have been pouring my own jigs for a good bit now but i was only interested in ball jigs with a screw lock for specks with no weed guard, but as ive completely fell in love with bass fishing, i have thought more and more about making my own bass jigs to sell and kinda create something i can have a part of. i have ordered a few new jig molds, but i had a few questions about the modifying molds, as well as the whole skirt thing in general ills tart with the skirts, is there a general idea with who to go to to buy skirts from? im going to be making saltwater based bass jigs for specks and reds as well, and im gonna need some pretty different colors, and im just kinda shooting around google when looking, maybe you guys can point me to the best source for them so i dont search a hundred sites for something i might not even be happywith. and as for jig modifying, i really like the way the sixth sense heads get through cover with the swimjig, and i was thinking maybe i could modify the poison tale jig mold to sort of come close to the same performance as the design on those, im pretty good with tools and things like that, so is it worth it to modify a jig, or should i just get a custom one or be happy with the do it molds? sorry about the quality of the post, my computer lags all of my text so it makes it hard to actually get a good post done haha. thanks in advance guys edit:if you have somewhere you can point me for good advice other than good youtube videos and things i would love to know, even personal advice and other forums are cool, ive been researching this for a good while now and im always interested in knowing more.

  14. I'm gonna be moving here shortly to Florida, and i've gained quite the arsonal of freshwater lures, which i'd like not to go to waste. Can i use my freshwater lures in saltwater? Will they work? If so which ones?
  15. I've been experimenting with some different techniques that I've learned since I got into bass fishing while targeting speckled trout down here in South Louisiana. I've found that the drop shot is very successful when fishing over oyster beds. I'm planning on picking up some terminal tackle tomorrow before I go out this weekend, and I was hoping to get some opinions from you guys about the setup. First off, what weight shape would work best on these oyster beds? I was using a cheap 1/4oz round style which seemed to work well, but I thought maybe a year drop style with a flat bottom might be better. Another question... I had a limited selection of hooks to choose from, and wound up using a 1/0 Mustad Demon offset circle hook. I'm drop shotting a 3" paddle tail swimbait. What size/type of hook would you guys recommend? Thanks in advance for the help
  16. I could have SWORE there was a saltwater section on BassResource.com but I guess not! If you don't care to read my rambling, I have a TL:DR at the bottom of the post! Let me put it straight. I'm moving to Florida permanently. Every reel I own is a Daiwa Tatula, Tatula CT, and Tatula CT Type R, and Zillion. I have multiples of all these reels. Love the Tatulas. I really don't want to dunk any of my Tats in salt. So I'm in the market for a new reel (anything for new gear, right?). Was checking out loads of sub 100 dollar cylindrical reels just to use in the salt and not care about... Not very happy with the choices. So I figure ehhh. Might as well go big or go home, right? So right now I have the Lexa HD 300 picked out. I originally thought why not go with the 400 for the whopping extra 100 yards of line capacity... But here's the point of this thread... Do I need that capacity? According to the internet, this reel holds about 250 yards of 30 pound braid, and considering the reel has under 30 pounds of drag, I don't see why I would need to go any higher than 30 pounds for open water. Maybe if I want to try to hit some pier or bridge snook, then I'd have to step it up to 50 or 65 pound I guess? TL:DR In any case, how many yards can a fish under 100 pounds drag off the spool? Is 250 or even just 200 yards enough line for the ocean? I have never fished for any saltwater species and if I happen to land onto a big tarpon or jack, how much would they be able to peel off of the reel? It's got a whopping 25 pounds of drag, keep in mind.
  17. I've been looking for a reel to use in both freshwater and saltwater. I've been looking at the daiwa zillion tws and zillion sv tw. they seem the same but one has the sv concept and one does not. what are the differences and which one would be able to cast a variety of heavy and light baits. I'll be pairing it with the legend xtreme I'm getting.
  18. I'm doing some kayak fishing lately and having a ball in a Field and Stream Eagle Talon. It won't be long before it'll be time for vacation, so I'm curious - I may take an inflatable kayak to Myrtle Beach in September to do some kicked-back saltwater fishing. I have a new Okuma Ceymar C-40 reel that I haven't even used yet. Is it possible to rig it with 40 or 50 pound line to do some saltwater fishing with it?
  19. Hey guys, my name is Gray Crigger and I am a 21 year old angling addict that is pretty new to the bass fishing world. I have been kayak fishing the Chesapeake Bay for saltwater species since I was 14, but I never really took freshwater fishing seriously until about a year ago. Sure, I used to go "pond hopping" in high school and often piddled around in my friend's neighborhood lake about twice a week, but I never really got past the level of throwing a texas rigged worm/lizard or popper around tiny little manmade lakes. I can't really identify the exact reason that I started to really take bass fishing (from a kayak) more seriously, but I have now become obsessed with the art form that is largemouth bass fishing. Now, don't get me wrong, I am still a mongo saltwater fan that will never get bored of hooking up to a nice big redfish or a 20+ inch flounder, but bass fishing provides me with a new challenge and I cannot stop reading researching and practicing the freshwater craft. The amount of research that can be done for bass fishing and the ability to implement the techniques leaned through that research has really got me hooked. Another passion of mine is documenting my saltwater and freshwater adventures and thoughts through social media and youtube. I have even started a little fishing "militia" of kayak fishing friends that we call the "Chesafreak" fishing squad. We are really active on the social media front (mostly twitter and instagram) and we love to interact with fellow anglers through those mediums. We also post youtube videos that are really just fun ways of documenting our fishing adventures and random fishing thoughts/impressions (product reviews, tackle talk, ect.). We also write blog articles from time to time that go a little more in-depth on what we KNOW about saltwater techniques, products, ect... and have begun to write articles about what we don't KNOW, but are trying to learn, about freshwater strategies. I just want to use this site as a platform to ask questions or express some things that I am gradually learning about bass fishing. ILL SEE YALL ON THE BOARDS!
  20. I have recently bought a kastking royale legend. It got overwhelming good feedback and is very cheap. I have been researching whether or not to put backing on my reel and have come up with mixed responses. So here is my question. I am going to put on around 40 pound braid on a Spool with holes, do I need backing? Thanks for the help. P.s. Do you think 200 yards of line is enough for a big red drum?
  21. I caught these fish a few months ago on an offshore charter. I'm pretty sure i'm right about what they are but i want to make sure so here they are: White Grunt? Red Snapper?
  22. Heading to Sugarloaf key for a week in early April and wanting to do 2 or 3 fishing trips. Preferably flats trips for tarpon, bonefish, snook etc. I've never fished a back country flats charter and was wondering seeing if my family here had any experience or suggestions on a specific guide/charter??? Any and all suggestions and advice wanted here! Thanks brothers!
  23. I am planning to go kayaking here in the Indian River. Of course, as an avid fisherman, my rod is coming with me! Unfortunately i have never done kayak fishing or kayaking in general so i could use some advice from you guys! First things first, i have some Gulp shrimp (penny) in stock and have my eye on a super spook jr. Any other lures or tips for this noob?
  24. Ok i am TIRED of catching Pinfish! I need some lures that can catch me the gamefish! Whether it be Redfish, Snook, Seatrout, Flounder etc. Just ANYTHING that isn't a Pinfish! Please reccomend effective lures for saltwater. (I don't have a boat but this shouldn't stop me from catching good fish)
  25. Yesterday i went on my first deep sea fishing trip on a charter boat. We went out and i caught some sea bass and snapper, but at one point i hooked into the biggest fish ive ever fought. I battled it for a few minutes until it started going under the boat. I tried to pull it out but it was too strong. Of course the line broke. Later in the same spot another person hooked into a big one and landed a 3 foot long Dusky Shark. I think i may have had one twice the size but it got away like i said. I'm not sure if it bit through the line or cut it on the boat etc. But i think this is something good to learn since i plan on going on another charter soon. Also do you think this was a shark or what? (There were also remoras in the area so it was definetly a sharky place.)
