  1. I'm just curious on what everyone's favorite casting seat for bass fishing jig/worm is and what you like about it. I'm in the market for one or several and hoping to gain some subjective insight on any products out there and then do some experimenting.
  2. So a friend shot me a message today, he knew someone with "a bunch of rod building stuff" for sale and sent me some pictures. Low and behold there is an untouched PB731mhxf and a what appears to be partial built pb691mf in the mix Along with a what looks to be a very nice set of I think batson dream reamers, a dryer, wrapping station, and a bunch of other stuff that I'll definitely use. So I ask " how much?" He says "200", I say "sold" So here I sit pondering some things. The 6'9" point blank looks like it's got a Fuji sk2 casting seat on it. Not sure if it's just dry fit or if it's tight. So I wonder ? if it's glued up, can that stuff be removed without damaging the blank? How do I go about that? I suppose if it's more work than it's worth it it may make a decent jerkbait stick? Thoughts on this blank? Second, the 7'3mhxf. I've been doing some checking around and I think I could purpose it as my big jigs, frogs in slop, and very occasionally small swimbait rod. Thoughts on this blank?
  3. I have an XXH Shimano Sojourn Musky 8'6 that doesn't fit in my tiny sedan. I want to cut it in the middle and epoxy in a piece of graphite or carbon stock to make it a 2pc. Is this feasible? Is there a better way? I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.
  4. I picked up a Quantum 7' KVD Medium heavy crankbait rod for around $80 on a good sale from Tackle Warehouse around the holidays. I have used it a couple of times and like the rod so far. However, I did notice that the epoxy around most of the guides seems to have air under it, and while fishing in light rain the other day I noticed that water will get underneath the epoxy and touch the thread wraps in some of these spots. I am on the fence on whether or not I should send this back as a warranty claim and try my luck with a new one. May not be a big deal but the water getting in seems concerning. Looking for some thoughts on how much of a problem this really is to the rod's longevity, performance, etc, and if it would be worth the $20 or so in freight to send it back. Photos of a few of the guides are attached. Thank you in advance for helping ease my mind. Jake
  5. Just FYI - Bought blank, guides, twine, glue and cork handle from Mud Hole.com. Spent $200.00 and 2 days building my rod. First day out I caught a 3lb bass and the rod broke in half. Complete junk! I called the company and they said it broke because I tied the guides on to tight, what? This doesn’t make any sense. Buyer beware this is garbage rod building stuff! Stay away!
  6. Just signed up. I learned how to build rods as a young kid living in Lantana Beach Florida. I hung out at a Bait store, "Capt. Johns Bait and Tackle", which changed owners and names long ago, and it was there that Capt. John taught me how to wrap big saltwater trolling rods and diamond wraps. I'm 47 now and have been an avid fisherman since, my career carries me all over the US and for the past several years I've been heavy into the amateur bass tournament scene. I recently had an urge to build myself a few custom rods so I purchased all of the equipment and got started. Grant it, it's been about 30 years since I've attempted building a rod and I can say that building on a small diameter bass rod is much different than a large diameter saltwater rod. My first attempt was a MHX High mod which I was very pleased with. My second a Rainshadow Eternity with Titanium / Torzite guides which I just finished. I can say I'm now hooked again and seeking to gain more knowledge here on this forum. A few pics of the rods I built attached. I'm kicking myself in the butt for not trimming down the reel seat barrel thread length on the rainshadow.
  7. Hey guys, It's been a while since I built a rod, but I have a question on color preserve. Would you need it for metallic thread? I want to give the metallic thread a whirl and can't remember if I needed to apply a preserve or not. PacBay has a Stay True Thread that indicates that no color preserve is not required, what are your experiences? Back when NCP thread first came out, it really didn't live up to the expectation. I'm sure since then there have been more advances to NCP thread technology, I just ahven't tried it yet. I'm not sure which thread I'll be using yet, but I was looking for your opinions. Thanks. JF10
