  1. Hey everyone, I’ve been fishing for several years now and and just bought my first boat this spring. I’m really starting to get the hang of finding bass in ponds, lakes, and bays (Lake Ontario). With that said, I am relatively clueless about bass fishing in rivers & streams. I’ve done some trolling for walleye and caught plenty of catfish and such casting worms on a dropshot off of dams on the canal… but never a largemouth or smallmouth out of a river or stream. I live in western central NY up between the Finger Lakes and the Great Lakes. The lake fishing is great, but we also have the Erie Canal, Seneca River, and a bunch of small streams and such. I really want to learn how to catch bass on the rivers and streams around here. How similar to lake fishing is river fishing? Are you still looking for lay-downs and weed edges? Do they prefer main channel or offshoots? Deep current or shallow breaks? I feel like it’s a totally different animal, and any education would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  2. Heading to Western MD this weekend with the family and should have a couple hours to get some lines wet in the Yough for the first time this year. Weather doesn't look like it's going to be ideal but that's life. I'd likely be fishing near Friendsville, just wading through the river. Any tips for what the fish are doing/biting right now? A few techniques I was considering are a tube, wacky rig, swimbait, and jerkbait. Maybe t-rig a lizard or brush hog or throw the whopper plopper around. Anything you'd remove or prepare for instead? Thanks in advance!
  3. So I went out to the Huron River today, had a rod with a jig w creature bait trailer, and one with a bone whopperplopper 90. I ended the day with only one large mouth, and a Bowfin! I’m very happy about the bowfin but I had probably 12 other bass swipe and miss, or get it and spit it out on the whopperplopper. Or they’d get it and I’d try to set the hook and it pops right out. I had a tank of a LM on the whopperplopper under a bridge and got it all the way to the kayak then out of nowhere just as i was about to land it, it pops off. It’s really just frustrating that I had that many bites and only landed one of them. What am I doing wrong?
  4. So in the next couple weeks, I'm looking to purchase a Fishing Kayak to take to the Huron River to catch some summer Smallies. I'm looking for tips on Kayaks and on baits/ lures to use, and things to look for in a fishing kayak before i buy one. I waded part of the river today using a 1/4 oz rooster tail, i got like 20 large Rock Bass, and only one 1.5 lb smallmouth. not satisfied with those results and want tips to catch more smallmouth regarding what to use. Im starting to resent rock bass, no mater where I go, I catch a million of em
  5. Hey BR, I have been seeing some MASSIVE carp schooling on the river while I have been fishing for smallmouth. I decided to bring a saltwater spinning setup that has 40lb braid on it, I added a 1/2 oz weight and a swivel, then I tied a 2 foot 30lb braid "leader". I used a small size 8 hook with some fake floating corn attached to the tag line which was wrapped around the hook. I saw a carp and tried to cast near it... it instantly spooked... So how can I "sight fish" for carp??
  6. So I was fishing today in a river with a small rooster tail and this little maybe 10 inch pike took it, but unfortunately it took it really really deep. It was hooked under the deep lower tendon and part of the gill. I struggled for 15 minutes trying to get the hook out to save the pike. Of course dipping him in for a breather as much as possible, but despite my best efforts, he was hooked to bad, his gills were to snagged up, he ended up dying unfortunately. Now to make things even sadder, the river I was in was a no eat area due to high PFAS levels. So I couldn’t use the little guy. Is there something I should’ve done better? He was very small for a pike which made things quite difficult, I did have Pliers, ones I’ve used to get hooks safely out of likes mouths on many occasions, but despite all my efforts, there was nothing I could do.
  7. I am planning on using my 6'6" Medium spinning rod and 6' ML spinning rod for more river fishing in NC in the Charlotte area. I want to spool the reels with 6 lb test but should I spool it with fluro or mono? I would consider 10 or 15 lb braid to fluro or mono but I don't know how to tie the knots and sometimes using a barrel swivel can be a pain. My goal would be to catch smallies but no idea if that's even realistic in my area so would be happy to use mostly the ML rod and catch any species I can in the rivers. Thanks for the help!
  8. walked along the Androscoggin River in Lewiston yesterday. about time to get out there and catch some smallies. if you have never fished this river and would like some info hit me up. this river has amazing numbers and size and there are times i will be the only person out there.
  9. How is the Taunton River for striper fishing? Both for early season schoolies/ holdovers and mid-season full grown stripers? I have family just south of Dighton Rock so that is where I would put my kayak in. Thanks!
  10. I wanted to start a discussion for topwater baits everyone has had success with hunting the bronzebacks. Last weekend I hooked up on a few in East TN using a 3in topwater popper, and a few with a size 90 whopper plopper, but I'm curious as to what else might be a good topwater presentations? I've had some people recommend a jerkbait and one buddy even recommended wacky rigging a senko and dragging it on the top/a few inches down, but I haven't had time to try it out. I've also seen this "double plopper" A-rig looking buzz bait deal, and am very intrigued to hear if anyone has had success with it (at $18 a piece I didn't want to dive in if it's just a bunk bait). Lend me your knowledge, fellow smallie smackers!
  11. Is there a rod size/ action/ power that would work well for both trout and crappie? I mostly fish for bass and would like to add just one rod that could be used for crappie and trout- is that possible? Price would be under $100 for rod and reel. I would be fishing mostly in ponds but would want to try streams for trout. Thanks guys!
  12. I'm planning on floating from bent creek to JRSP and I was wondering if anybody had fished that stretch? If so, what lures did you throw? I was thinking of going with some inline spinners, 4 or 5 inch grubs, texas rigged worms, and maybe topwater....
  13. I’m looking to meet my brother at a midpoint between North Texas and Central PA for some river kayak fishing and camping in the Spring of 2019. He’s great at fishing and I don’t want to disappoint him. What are your recommendation for a river and location? I’m thinking Tennessee? I’m the novice and in my 70’s, he’s the younger brother at 62... Thanks for your help... PW
  14. Hello everyone, I am new member here from an Island called Mauritius. I love fishing a lot. I haven't catch anything big yet but I keep on trying. I need to upgrade my fishing gears but currently cannot afford if anyone has any tips on how to catch bigger bass please let me know. If anyone has old gears that they are not using, I would really appreciate it. This fishing is so addicting...I keep thinking of it 24/7 I even have dreams about it.
  15. I'm using a 3 way swivel for an average size moving river with a casting sinker...what is the minimum size sinker I'd need? I'd be catching freshwater drum, bluegill, etc...and would a bank sinker be better so it doesn't move around?
  16. Hi All, I'm heading out to the Shenandoah next week to do some smallmouth fishing for a few hours -- floating the river in canoe from Front Royal. I've done a lot of lake fishing in my time -- both smallmouth and largemouth -- but never dabbled in river fishing. I was thinking of running some bright colored shall cranks and tossing some senkos. But, I'm curious to hear any tips or tricks that you may have for me? Since it's my first time, I'm thinking it's best just to stick to a 2-3 bait day, rather than rotate between too many setups. (Going with two 6'6 rods -- both medium weight. Thinking of tying on 6lb test for both). 1.) I'd love to hear 1-2 setups that you'd go with for a 4 hour float for smallies near Front Royal? 2.) what type of water should I be targeting? In and around breakwater? Slower/ deeper holes? To shore or mid-river structure? Sorry for such a broad question, but any and all tips that you may have would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance, Jared
  17. New to the Washington DC area, college student from Fairmont WV interning in DC for the summer. Looking to do some bass fishing and was wondering if anyone was familiar with the area and would want to do some fishing. I don't have a car so would have to uber.. Should be interesting with all of my fishing gear lol. Cant go this summer without wetting a line. Let me know if you're interested in doing some largemouth or smallmouth fishing in the DC area. 18. Hello Bass Resource Fishing Community! This is my first post and I would love to hear some of your favorite smallmouth bass fishing lures to use in Rivers? Thanks for reading and feedback. Have a great day.
  19. Hello Everyone, Ive been looking for this forum and searching for some decent fishing spots on Hillsborough River i can hit from shore. I dont have a boat and completely new to the area. I've been to Riverhills Park and tried fishing past the boardwalk but it was fairly crowded and not much area to cast in, and the area on the other side of the ramp has a ton of vegetation ( maybe a recomendation on lures for dealing with them?) I saw Lettuce Lake has some boat rentals for 25$ but mostly i hear from you guys to stay near 40th/56th st d**n and thats just not doable from there but maybe the fishing is ok that far north? If not Hillsborough river maybe you guys can share some other local fishing spots that would not require a boat? Thanks in advance for your help.
  20. I do pretty well on the Alabama River catching spots. However, the Coosa River kicks my butt every time! How are these guys bringing in 18lb bags of spots? On the Alabama you simply find a good laydown with current. That technique on the Coosa has not worked for me thus far.
  21. Need advice on if I should install a boat launch and if it will be worth it. I recently inherited a 5 acres property with a beautiful house sitting on over 250 feet of river front off of the Coosa River in Alabama. Here's the problem, the city boat launch is about 20 minutes away from the house by road, and the banks to the river are extremely steep rising 10 to 15 feet above the river. Is it worth the money to install a ramp or some sort of winch system for a boat (Bass Boat or Pontoon Boat) for the convenience of not having to always drive down to the city launch? Would it help the resell of the property to a fishing enthusiast if it is installed? What kind of system should I be looking at if I did install it? It's hard to tell how steep the bank is from the picture, but hoping you all would have some insights and recommendations. Thanks in advance and happy fishing.
  22. Need help Fishing the calcasieu river anyone know any spots or good lures to use around February? Thanks!
  23. Yesterday was a beautiful fall day here as the temp was in the 70's. With the days getting shorter there isn't as much time to fish after work anymore, so traveling half an hour or more to fish a different lake almost isn't worth while. The lake I live on has been on a downward spiral the last few years. The bass fishing there has never been all that great, but it used to be great for northerns and although they're rebounding, it's nowhere near where it was. I've hardly fished out there the past few years, but if you can time it right both in the spring and fall, you can get into a decent population of smallmouth that migrate into and out of the rivers that feed the flowage. Anyway, it was too nice of a day not to fish yesterday, so I headed out for about 2 1/2 hours. I managed to boat 7 smallies. They were stacked up on what wood is in the accessible part of the river. One small tree with hardly any branches on it had 4 fish on it and possibly a 5th as well. Everything I caught was one of two baits. One was a Bomber Long A model B14 and the other was a Rapala Shadow Rap Deep. I kept them moving pretty fast and every one just crushed it. It was a fun night to be on the water. ^ Just a little 15", but he looked so pretty in the sun I couldn't help but take a pic
  24. It's not too long before the salmon start running in Michigan. Im going to travel to petoskey to fish in the bear river. I will be using spawn sacs and a 6 6" med action ugly stik with an Abu Cardinal s60 with 20 lb mono. Anybody have and suggestions for me (lb test line, how to rig the spawn bag, hook size, how to fish, etc:
  25. Hi there! This is my first post, so bare with me. I've been fishing ever since I was young, however my dad only taught me the basic basics hahah. So couldn't seem to find any posts on this anywhere. But when using a bobber, do you ever also use weights (small ones obviously). If so why. And if not why not? Thanks so much for the help!!
