  1. Hey guys, I'm looking for a solid and versatile reel for my punching set up, any suggestions? Specifically, I'm ONLY interested in a baitcasting reel that has a "flipping switch". These seem to be impossible to find, but an example of a reel with a flipping switch is the Lew's Super Duty G. Also, I heard that Abu Garcia's black max and silver max have them in specific models. Please help me and list some suggestions, I've scoured the internet and can't find many options. Finding a reel with a flipping switch is my main concern. What do you guys know (P.S. This is unimportant but im throwing it on a 7'3 Okuma Scott Martin Signature TCS Casting Rod Heavy, Fast action because I like the way Scott martin fishes and I'm using it in a kayak so i can't really work a legit 7'11 Ex Heavy flippin stick.) What are the best baitcasters with a flipping switch option? Idc if it's $20 or $400 Thanks!!!!!!
  2. Hey all, I've recently switched over from a 4/0 offset worm hook for all my TX rig baits to using a 4/0-5/0 straight shank heavy wire flippin hooks such as the Trokar TK130, Owner Jungle, VMC, etc...I bought a ton. I'm hyped about it, I've caught a lot of good fish flippin brush and tree stumps for spawning bass. But I also own several rods (all of which I built myself using PB,NFC HMX,RS Eternity) I notice I cannot get a good hook set and lose fish way more often if I'm using anything other than a Heavy action rod (blanks rated for 1oz or more) most of my rods are mediums or medium heavy (rated up to 3/4oz) The heaviest tungsten weight I go is usually 1/2oz, but 90% of the time it's 3/8oz. on 50lb braid, snell knot. Am I doing something wrong? Not setting the hook hard enough?
  3. Recently ordered some gear from and they included a free spool of 25lb fluoro with my order. I use 10 lb and 15 lb fluoro for most applications, with the exception of 50 lb braid for my frogging, and pitching into heavy cover. My question is what should I use the 25 lb for? Maybe a leader on my flipping/pitching set up? Seems like it’d be a bit too big for anything else. Do any of you have experience using fluoro that heavy?
  4. Looking for a good pitching and flipping baitcasting rod and reel for jigs for bass. Around $150.00 do yall have any suggestions anything would be much appreciated, thanks.
  5. What’s an all around heavy rod for flipping, pitching, heavy cover punching, heavy cover in general, frog etc im considering a Daiwa SVF AGS XHeavy frog rod 7’4” thoughts? Reviews? Other consideration on a great rod even save good money or am I in the right ball park for that rod? I’m not a extreme fanatic fisherman where I need different rod for different setup. As long as I can cut and retie, I am fine.
  6. Been looking all around for a 150$ pitching and sometimes flipping rod. I think the ikos might be the one. Any feedback will help. My reasons are good reviews, smaller business, American made, and a good warranty. Which model should I get for pitching 1/2 Oz jigs in laydowns, moderate grass (varied types), some light lilypads (and sometimes moderate to heavy), and sometimes rock as well. Thanks and have a nice day!
  7. In need of some advice! Ive been fishing at a pond that has heavy moss just about everywhere I look. Instead of fishing around it, I thought I’d try to fish in it! Overall the pond is pretty shallow. Where I’m noticing the most cover, the water depth range is 3ft to 10ft. I picked out a rod (G Loomis GLX 954c FPR). The only jigs in my aresanal are siebert jigs but own no flipping jigs. I know I need something heavy enough to get through the thick mats of moss but considering how shallow the water is, I don’t want to go too heavy so I maximize the presentation on the fall. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
  8. So last Christmas I was bought myself a brand new Flippin’ n Pitchin’ setup. It was my first rod that I bought for a specific technique and above all it was my very first Baitcasting Rod/Reel setup ever! Well I haven’t had the opportunity to use this rod how I imagined I’d be using it until yesterday. I started out yesterday morning casting spinners and lipless cranks around some local ponds, caught a few dinks, nothing even remotely big but still nice. But once it hit around Noon - 1 o’clock ish all the fish had left the shallows and I couldn’t find anything. That’s when I pulled out my flipping and pitching setup I had been hauling around with me all day. And yah know, I have to admit, there’s something a little intimidating about purposefully chucking a lure into the branches of a big tree thatsfallen in the water. But I quickly remembered all the YouTube videos I’d seen and posts I’d read about guys pulling absolute pigs out of laydowns and I was able to convince myself that losing a soft plastic isn’t the same as losing a $5 lure and went ahead and started flippin and pitchin all the lay downs I could find. And boy and I glad I did! My first few lay downs weren’t super productive but I’m still rusty at getting my bait in the water quiet enough not to spook any fish and I basically had to stand on the tree that I was pitching to because I couldn’t get a good casting angle off the bank. So I’ll attribute my lack of fish from those spots to that. But after a few not so good pitches and flips I found myself at the laydown that has taken at least 5 or 6 of my lures over the years from casting at it from the other side of the pond. I could see two big bass hovering around the branches of the tree and my heart immediately started racing. I tried my headrest to very quietly get into a good casting position and once I did I pitched out my T-Rigged soft plastic as quiet as I could. It landed on the trunk of the tree and immediately all of the nearby bass were super interested. I could see a few 2 pounders just hovering over my bait. I ever so slowly twitched my lure up the body of the tree, watching one of the bigger bass get closer and closer as it inspected my bait. My heart was pounding at this point. I had gotten my lure as far up the tree as I could before I had to twitch it off the side of the trunk. As my bait fell down into the deeper water, immediately the big bass rocketed down to the bottom! I held on for dear life for what I thought was about the be the most jarring bite I’ve ever gotten in my entire life!... but nothing. I was so fired up that I immediately pulled my bait right back out of the water to do the exact same sequence of events over again, but as soon as I pulled it up I had wished I left it down there for an extra second with a few good twitches. When I pulled it up I saw the bass follow it up and then swim back into the deep part of the tree once my bait broke the surface. I didn’t let that discourage me though. I pitched my bait right back out there. This was the pitch that will stick with me for a very long while, and to be honest I’m not sure when I felt the bite but all of the sudden I knew I had a head shaking largemouth bass on the end of my line and II wasn’t about to let it get away. I set the hook hard and with a grunt ripped that fish right out of the water as soon as I possibly could. The fight was short but the reward will be with me forever. I pulled up what was easily one of the biggest bass I’ve ever seen pulled out of this pond. I let out a celabratory ““Yeah!” While holding my fish and the guy across the pond from me did the same! Even he knew it was a big fish or this pond too!! Luckily I managed to snap a few pictures while trying to awkwardly hold the fish and position myself in view of my phone camera. I know this fish is only about 2 pounds (maybe) but it was still a catch I’ll always remember!
  9. Hi All, New to the group, looking forward to getting some help. Im looking to get a new flipping/pitching rod and am looking at either the Okuma TCS 7’6” H or the similarly-spec’d Phenix Recon Elite 766 (7’6”H). THE Phenix is about 2x the cost of the TCS, so I’m wondering if it’s worth the additional investment or if anyone has any experience with either rod. I also like the Dobyns Champion series, but they are 3x of the Okuma. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.
  10. Anyone got a villain 2.0 and use it for flippin n pitching? Thinking of getting one in a 7'6" heavy fast. Reviews ?
  11. First off thanks to Dave (The Fishin' Pastor) and bassresource for today's video on the pitching technique. I really enjoy these brief instructional videos that show up on the home page so frequently. https://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-videos/pitching-for-bass.html On my list of things to do this season are learning and becoming pro-fish-ient at new techniques including pitching, flipping and drop shot. After watching the video, in particular the part about recommended gear, I still have unanswered questions. The suggested gear included a 7'3 rod, braided line, and a high gear ratio baitcasting reel, for reasons such as being able to pull a fish out of heavy cover (braid) and being able to reel it in quickly (gear ratio). But those reasons seem to be applicable to any technique, not specific to pitching. My most comfortable and common go-to setup is a 6'6" M/F with a baitcasting reel around 6.3:1 with 12# mono. I'm 5'10" tall. Will this setup be okay for learning how to properly pitch? Thanks for your help and again to Dave & BR for the video.
  12. Does anyone have the 7'4" Heavy, Fast Action, St. Croix Mojo Bass? If so, does anyone pitch with it? Wondering if it's good with braid and sensitive enough for pitching?
  13. Whats your #1 soft plastic for flipping pitching or punching? (name/brand specific please)
  14. Hey guys im going to get a new rod, the Powell Max 3d mag bass 7'3 Heavy Xtra Fast action.. Do yall think this would be too much for pitching with braid(not flipping...). If so please tell me why.. Thanks
  15. So I have a question for everyone.. how do you go about choosing weight size for jig like lures? I don't or haven't done much jig fishing so I feel like I'm completely clueless when it comes to trying to determine wherther I should choose 1/2oz 3/8oz or maybe 3/4oz jig size jigs.. the same concept for trying to figure out chatterbaits and tungsten punch weights... I'm guessing people are going to say it depends what kind of structure I'm fishing and how deep.. I have no idea how deep I am fishing usually because I have a small inflatable pontoon boat with no electronics.. but I do have some maps that I printed out on the lakes I fish and most of the time it's usually no more than 10-15ft max just because it is usually pretty shallow with lay down trees, stumps, lots of submerged vegetation Lilly pads. Also lots of various docks too. The majority of the lakes are not very big lakes but have excellent cover for hiding bass.. I'm up in western Washington just south of Seattle.. anyways any help or suggestions any can offer is so very greatly appreciated! I have learned so much from you guys already but never really did much if any jig fishing... Growing up it was always spinner bait and crankbaits when bass fishing... I feel like I'm not a complete bass angler because jig fishing isn't such a hug staple in a bass angler arsenal..
  16. Obviously I need to retie more often, but typically when I break braid flipping with a snell knot, it is caused by where the line rubs against the top of the hook eye before it enters the eye and ties to the shaft. Does anyone have any ideas such as putting a small 1/2" long piece tube (rubber, flexible plastic, coffee straw) or some other means of reducing the abrasion? That part of the line would be covered by the bait anyway. Just looking online for ideas and not seeing anything so thought someone on here may have come up with a solution for this problem.
  17. Hi, I'm just starting to get into flipping and Pitching... What is the best color for it and what brand/Type of bait? Thanks.
  18. I've been having great success catching bass from the bank on jigs at a local park with a huge pond/lagoon system down here in NOLA. Bass lures can be hard to come by in southeast LA, and the jigs I've been using from Dick's just don't hold up. As I'm looking online, I see so many styles of jigs and no 2 styles from different manufacturers are the same. So I'm trying to get some answers from you guys. The waters I fish are full of grass, and I also like to fish lay downs and any rocks I can find. What is the best all around jig style for me to use? I've been looking into arky style jigs and flipping jigs, and they're so similar yet so different I keep second guessing myself. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!!
  19. Trying to get suggestions on flipping sticks. I'm a shorter guy so I'm thinking around 7'3 or 7'4 max. It's the only thing I need to complete my arsenal. I have been looking at the Lew's TP1s and the custom speed sticks. Just wanting to hear some other suggestions. Thanks
  20. I use Berkley Professional Grade Braid when flipping and pitching jigs. After a handful of uses, the coating on the braid wears off and the braid looks thicker and not as smooth. The line doesn't come off the reel smooth and it gets caught in the reel sometimes or pinches on itself, preventing a smooth pitch or flip. My reel is set properly because I can pitch and flip just fine when the coating on the braid is there. Do you have any thoughts on what the issue could be? Is it the line? Is there something I'm not aware of? Anyone else have this problem? Thanks
  21. What's your opinions on the perfect Texas rig rod for spot pitching into shallow cover? Length, power action, guides etc. When I say shallow cover not talking about mats or anything you need a punching rod for.. I'm talking 6 foot or less on shore line trees, cypress knees, lay downs etc. where you pitch to a specific target with Texas rigs??!!?? up to you to name the brand rod you use or not
  22. Alright guys, I fancy myself a decent jig fisherman and at my local spot its a necessity that I use one due to the cover presented. I fish a slow moving, muddy river that is chalk full of trees, logs, rocks and god knows what else from the bank to bottom. I have semi consistently lost a jig or two every time out. I know it's a great lure for the bass in there and have had good success dragging it over and through all the cover in the river. I guess I have two questions. 1. Is it just an accepted part of jig fishing in very heavy cover that you lose some? 2. Is there a specific head design that comes through cover better than others? Specifically wood? Any tips on head design, fishing technique or anything related to heavy cover jig fishing would be appreciated guys.
  23. anybody else practice flipping and pitching jigs as well as skipping lures while waiting for the cold weather to break? ive barely survived this off season by watching youtube videos and practicing pitching and skippings jigs. what do you do to pass the off-season?
  24. Ok im looking into getting one of the mag lews speed sticks. Im looking at the 7'11" heavy rod. I will be using this as my primary flipping and pitching setup for heavier cover. The rod is rated for 1/2 oz to 3oz. I like to flip and pitch soft plastics wtih 1/4 oz weights sometimes and 3/8 oz jigs as well. My question is with the 1/4 oz weight, bulkier soft plastic, and hook do you think I will be over the 1/2 oz mark? what about 3/8 oz jigs with trailer? I know the obvious answer is to weight it but im not going to weigh all the combos that I would ever throw on this. Like is said this will be used for all weights 1/4 oz to punching weights I just wanted to know what you guys thought about this? Also I know there are other larger rods around this length that are rated for 1/4oz to whatever weight but im really liking this rod and am probably going to get it depending on yalls answers. Thanks for the info guys.
